She was in the wrong place…

Fiercely independent and adventurous, Poppy Bridgerton will only wed a suitor whose keen intellect and interests match her own. Sadly, none of the fools from her London season qualify. While visiting a friend on the Dorset coast, Poppy is pleasantly surprised to discover a smugglers’ hideaway tucked inside a cave. But her delight turns to dismay when two pirates kidnap her and take her aboard a ship, leaving her bound and gagged on the captain’s bed…

He found her at the wrong time…

Known to society as a rascal and reckless privateer, Captain Andrew James Rokesby actually transports essential goods and documents for the British government. Setting sail on a time-sensitive voyage to Portugal, he’s stunned to find a woman waiting for him in his cabin. Surely, his imagination is getting the better of him. But no, she is very real—and his duty to the Crown means he’s stuck with her.

Can two wrongs make the most perfect right?

When Andrew learns that she is a Bridgerton, he knows he will likely have to wed her to avert a scandal—though Poppy has no idea that he is the son of an earl and neighbor to her aristocratic cousins in Kent. On the high seas, their war of words soon gives way to an intoxicating passion. But when Andrew’s secret is revealed, will his declaration of love be enough to capture her heart…?

I recently went on a Julia Quinn binge when I was craving a new-to-me historical romance series to get lost in, and the Bridgertons series was exactly what I was looking for. It’s full of humor and heart, so of course I was excited to read about the Bridgertons prequel series, the Rokesbys! The Other Miss Bridgerton is the first in this new series that I’ve read, but I will be remedying that soon because I adored Andrew and Poppy’s story. It’s a tale of kidnapping, high seas, pirates (who prefer the name privateers), and secret identities – how could I not enjoy it?

Poppy Bridgerton is ahead of her time. She’s daring, independent, and adventurous… but that all leads her to trouble when she’s found in a supposedly abandoned cave and kidnapped so she won’t tell anyone the secrets that lie in that unfortunate cave. Captain Andrew James Rokesby is in charge of hiding and delivering those secrets, but imagine his surprise when his crew leaves an aristocratic woman, a Bridgerton of all people, in his bed on the ship. He knows he’s in trouble, but he’s keeping her on board anyway as they set sail for Portugal. Neither expect to enjoy their talks, their banter… or even to start falling for one another. But can a relationship really be possible when they reach land?

Poppy is as sassy a heroine as you can get. There’s absolutely nothing she can do on the ship, since the crew doesn’t want a woman on board because of superstition, so all she can use to fight with is her words. She’s intelligent and witty (my favorite kind of heroine), and much to her surprise, Andrew can give as good as he gets from her. They have a wonderful chemistry on board, thanks to the close proximity, and I loved that they made the kidnapping a bit light-hearted. This is more along the lines of a slow burn romance, which I appreciated. I couldn’t get enough of these two characters, their lovely banter, and the way they unwittingly start to fall in love. My only complaint is that I wish there had been more at the end. It seemed to move a bit too fast and conveniently. Other than that, The Other Miss Bridgerton was a delight and pure fun to read. I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of the Rokesbys soon!

Étienne Lacroix and I had a fire I thought would never die.
Our love was timeless.
An irreversible decision sent me back to the present day with a family I barely recognize, but I am determined to find a way back to Étienne.
I can survive time. But I can’t survive life without him.
Time bends to no one’s demands, so I must fight with everything I have to return to the past. However, I am terrified that the past I once knew might not look the same, and the man who once called me his surviving trace will no longer be waiting for me.

Time bends to no one’s demands but sometimes love does…

One of my FAVORITE new-to-me authors I discovered in 2018 is Calia Read. I saw the synopsis for The Surviving Trace – a time travel romance – and knew I had to read it. A heroine who somehow travels back to the early 1900s in the Southern U.S. and takes over the life of a woman who looked exactly like her and had the same name? I had to so many high expectations, and I was absolutely blown away by this phenomenal book. The writing, the characters, and the story all sucked me in and I couldn’t get enough of Serene and Etienne. By the time I got to the end, I was DYING for their next book. Thankfully, Calia Read didn’t let me down!

The Reigning and the Rule is the direct sequel, so you need to read The Surviving Trace beforehand. I honestly won’t say much about the plot, since it continues on from book one. All you need to know is that it’s just as good as book one, maybe with even more twists and turns. As soon as I picked this book up, I couldn’t put it down. I was easily sucked back into Serene’s baffling journey, the love she found with Etienne, and how she’ll do anything to keep it. She is such a strong, determined heroine, and I loved her for it. Etienne is as swoony as EVER. God, I love that man.

SO many emotions ran through me while reading this sequel. There’s a constant question of “What’s going to happen next?” and a heaping dose of angst to go with. The Surviving Time series is a must-read, whether you like time travel romances or not. It’ll transport you to another world that you never want to leave! Just a fair warning though, the ending will make you scream!!! I couldn’t believe Calia Read left us there, and I’d give my soul up to read the third, and maybe final?, book.
