excerpt

“My fingers are sticky,” she said, holding them up near my face.

“Well, if you weren’t such a messy eater you wouldn’t have that problem.”

She laughed as I grabbed her hand and put her fingers in my mouth. I tasted blackberry.

“That just really turned me on,” she said.

She jumped to her feet and started backing away from me.

“Where are you going?” I asked, still sitting on the sand.

“Away from you!” she laughed. “My mom always warned me about men who randomly sucked on your body parts.”

“What did she say about them?” I asked.

“That they’d get you pregnant and ruin your life.”

“Let’s test that theory.”

I jumped up quickly, and she let out a startled scream. If someone had been watching from a distance, they probably would have thought something awful was going down.

She took off running down the beach, her long legs propelling her smoothly through the sand. My initial impression of her having probably been an avid lifelong runner were being proven true.

Thankfully, I was taller and had spent years running for baseball training. I began to make ground on her.

She glanced behind herself as she ran and let out another startled scream when she realized I was much closer than she expected me to be.  She tried turning on the jets, but I was still gaining on her. I reached my arms out and grabbed hold of her shoulders.

“Help” she yelled to no one in particular.

We were both breathing heavily, and when she turned around to face me I pushed her down onto the sand.

I knelt down between her legs and put a hand on each one.

“These things sure do move quickly.”

“That’s not all they do.”

She leaned up and grabbed the neck of my shirt, pulling me down toward her.

I hadn’t kissed a girl on the beach like this since I was in high school. There was something sexy about it: laying in the sand, waves crashing at the shore, not a soul in sight.

We rolled around in the sand for a while, kissing, touching, breathing heavily. A couple of people even walked by, but we took no notice.

Finally, we stopped after I rolled her onto her back and sand fell off of my arms and onto her face.

She playfully made spitting noises trying to get the sand out of her mouth, acting like she was drowning under a pile of it.

I stood up, and then reached out my arm to help her up.

“Let’s get out of here,” I said.

Ryan Kendall is broken. He understands pain. He knows the hand of violence and the ache of loss. He knows what it means to fail those who need you. Being broken doesn’t stop him wanting the one thing he can’t have; Finlay Tanner. Her smile is sweet and her future bright. She’s the girl he grew up with, the girl he loves, the girl he protects from the world, and from himself.

At nineteen, Ryan leaves to join the Australian Army. After years of training he becomes an elite SAS soldier and deploys to the Afghanistan war. His patrol undertakes the most dangerous missions a soldier can face. But no matter how far he runs, or how hard he fights, his need for Finlay won’t let go.

Returning home after six years, one look is all it takes to know he can’t live without her. But sometimes love isn’t enough to heal what hurts. Sometimes people like him can’t be fixed, and sometimes people like Finlay deserve more than what’s left.

This is a story about war and the cost of sacrifice. Where bonds are formed, and friendships found. Where those who are strong, fall hard. Where love is let go, heartache is born, and heroes are made. Where one man learns that the hardest fight of all, is the fight to save himself.

“How do I tell the woman I love that I fathered a son with a prostitute?”

After four long years of separation, Gavin has finally reunited with his childhood love Corabelle. She’s forgiven him for leaving her during the funeral of their seven-day-old baby, and also for where he ended up — in Mexico to get a vasectomy.

A message from Rosa, a prostitute he met the day of his surgery, brings his life to a crashing halt. She claims Gavin has fathered a son, now three years old and living with her cousin in Ensenada. He doesn’t know if he can trust Rosa, who never mentioned the boy before, or if his delicate reconciliation with Corabelle can withstand the shock if it is true.

Corabelle believes their future together is the right thing despite their past. But when she learns of this other child, the one thing she lost long ago and might never have again with Gavin, Corabelle’s faith that her life will ever follow her old dream is shattered. To make things right for Gavin and his son, she just might have to let go of the only person she always believed would be her forever love.

Forever Loved is the heart-wrenching conclusion to the passionate story that began with Forever Innocent.

Excerpt from Forever Loved, Book 2 of the Forever Series

The bestselling story Forever Innocent (just 99 cents through Jan. 24) comes to its dramatic conclusion in Forever Loved, out Jan. 10 from author Deanna Roy.

In this scene, Gavin realizes that his ditching Corabelle has had grave consequences as she attempts to recover from pneumonia in the hospital.

________________

I stepped out of the curtain space quickly and walked along the semicircle, praying Corabelle was in one of them. A teenage boy. A middle-aged woman. A man in traction.

Then I saw her. She slept, her dark hair tied up in a knot high on her head.

I almost dropped to my knees.

She had a tube going into her mouth, a blue one just like Finn’s. Her heartbeat registered on a monitor, as well as her oxygen levels. I tried to shake the vision of the NICU, but the noises were too similar, the wheeze of a ventilator and periodic beeps.

I stumbled toward her like a dying man. What had happened? My stomach felt lined with rocks. I sat on the bed and brushed back a wisp of hair from her forehead. She slept really hard, not shifting at all with my touch. They must have given her something to knock her out. Even the first two nights when she was sick, she would still shift around, sometimes making little sounds. Now she was so flat to the bed.

Like Finn had been after I’d signed the papers to disconnect him.

Remorse crashed over me like a wave. I had screwed everything up. Walked out on her. Gone to Mexico. And here she was, barely holding on.

“I’m so sorry, baby,” I whispered.

I shouldn’t be in her life at all. She’d been doing fine until I came along. Going to school, planning her future.

Now she was here.

The monitors continued their steady sounds.

I heard the nurse talking and panicked. I would not leave her now. The machines were to the left of the bed, so the nurse would probably approach there. I ducked to the opposite side and folded tight into a ball, tugging the curtain in front of me so that I sat between it and the concrete wall.

I couldn’t see anything, but the footsteps grew closer, paused, then faded away again. The maintenance cart began rolling, wheels clattering on the concrete floor.

When the room was quiet again, I peeked out. Corabelle had not moved. Her elbow was bent near the edge of the bed, and I shifted forward to lay my forehead against her cool skin.

I wished we could go back to that first night at the astronomy star party, when Corabelle stretched out beside me on the roof, and we realized the world had pushed us back together after four years. But I’d gotten angry, and taken off. If I could just do that night again, I wouldn’t have left then either. If we’d been better from the beginning, she wouldn’t have walked into that damn ocean.

I just kept leaving. I just kept walking away.

Until I figured all this out, I could not be the man who always stayed the course. I would continue to be the one who wasn’t there when things got tough.

I didn’t want to be that person.

excerpt

We spent the evening in the bedroom, only leaving to make sandwiches from the supplies that the property manager had dropped off before we’d arrived. We made love late into the night and woke with a morning round as well.

Though we were in the middle of nowhere, I discovered we still had wi-fi. It was almost a disappointment—part of the beauty of the cabin was the remoteness of it. Yet it was nice for listening to music. After a breakfast of yogurt and fresh berries, I set up Spotify on Hudson’s laptop, logging in as me, and turned on one of my favorite playlists. We lounged naked on the sofa, my head at one end, his at the other while he massaged my feet.

Phillip Phillip’s So Easy came on. I hummed along for a bit, occasionally singing some of the words.

Hudson watched me with admiration. “You have a nice voice.”

I blushed. It was funny to realize that I hadn’t ever sung in front of him. Oh, the firsts we still had between us. Since I was already embarrassed, I admitted, “This song makes me think of you.”

His nose wrinkled in surprise. “You have a song that makes you think of me?”

“Several. A whole soundtrack.” We were listening to the playlist I had titled H, after all.

“Hmm. I didn’t know that.” He tilted his head and I could tell he was trying to catch the words.

I sang along, helping him hear the important parts, getting louder at the chorus where Phillip sang about making it so easy to fall so hard.

It was Hudson’s turn to be embarrassed. He looked down at his hands working the sole of my foot, a small smile playing at his lips. The song ended, and he moved to my other foot. “How about a shower?”

I stretched my arms over my head and pointed my toes, noting the soreness of muscles that I didn’t even know I had. “Yes. Definitely.” A hot shower sounded good. But I didn’t make a move to get up. Not moving sounded good too.

“Do you have any specific plans for the day? Besides the shower.”

I groaned as his thumb worked at the knot in the ball of my foot. “You have me kidnapped in the mountains—I think I’m kind of at your mercy.”

“That you are. In which case, I was thinking I’d like to spend the day inside you as much as possible.”

I grinned. “I’m totally okay with that. Anything else you have planned?”

“I’d like to take you for a walk around the property. And perhaps some online jewelry shopping. I believe a new necklace or earrings for Mira’s event might be nice.”

Instead of automatically arguing about the idea of a gift like I usually did, I weighed the idea in my head. “That might not be bad. I don’t have anything nice, and I have been through the wringer lately. Maybe I deserve a present of some sort.” I smiled coyly.

“Alayna!” Hudson exclaimed. “I’ve never heard you care about any of that before.”

I stared at my hands and shrugged, wishing I hadn’t said anything.

Hudson abandoned my feet, crawled up to my face, and covered my body with his. “I’m very pleased. And a whole lot aroused.”

Well, he was somewhat aroused. The new position made it evident.

“Why does my acting like a greedy bitch turn you on?”

“Because I love giving you things. It’s something that I’m good at. I wish I could give you more but you never seem interested.” He ran his fingers through my hair. “So anything you want, I’ll give it to you. A shopping spree? A week in Nevis? A car?”

I rolled my eyes and tried to push him off of me. “You’re making fun of me now.”

He held his ground, both physically and conversationally. “I’m dead serious. Do you want me to buy you a company? Or an island?”

“Stop it.”

“No. I won’t.” He tilted my chin up to meet his eyes. “Anything you want, Alayna. It’s yours. And since you don’t seem to know that, I’ll have to work even harder to make sure you take advantage of my wealth.”

Again, I tried to push him away. “I don’t want or need to take advantage—”

“Now stop.” He moved his hand to caress my cheek. “I know you don’t. You never have. But I’ve told you before that you own me. Whether you take advantage of it or not, I’m yours.”

I started to protest again, but he continued. “And thereby, all I own is yours.” He met my eyes with stone-cold sincerity. “There are contracts that can guarantee that, you know.”

I swallowed. Gulped, actually. The kind of contracts he was talking about…joint ownership…those were hints at wedding bells if I’d ever heard them. Petrified and a little bit thrilled, I tested the waters. “That’s some pretty serious stuff you’re implying.”

“I’ll do more than imply if you let me.” His voice was quiet but genuine.

My heart pounded in my chest. He couldn’t say I love you, but he could promise me the moon? He got intimidated when I expressed my feelings through a song, but he could offer a lifetime?

We weren’t ready for that. I wasn’t. He wasn’t, even if he thought he was. “I think I’ll just take a nice piece of jewelry for now,” I whispered.

I waited with bated breath for his response, hoping I hadn’t hurt his feelings.

It took a second, but he smiled. “Then it’s yours.”

Wanting to lighten the mood more, I added, “Also, some more books. And did you really say a car?”

He shook his head in disbelief. “You don’t want a car. You don’t like to drive.”

It was true that I wasn’t fond of being behind the wheel of a car. But there were other places that driving occurred. “No, I like to drive. You just never let me.”

He narrowed his eyes. “You’re not talking about cars anymore, are you?”

“Nope.” I reached my hand down to circle his cock that was still semi-aroused. I stroked him, once, twice.

He groaned and flipped me so that I was on top of him. “How about you drive right now?”

I straddled him, positioned myself over his cock and slid down. “It kind of seems like I already am.”

Livie has always been the stable one of the two Cleary sisters, handling her parents’ tragic death and Kacey’s self-destructive phase with strength and maturity. But underneath that exterior is a little girl hanging onto the last words her father ever spoke to her. “Make me proud,” he had said. She promised she would…and she’s done her best over the past seven years with every choice, with every word, with every action.

Livie walks into Princeton with a solid plan, and she’s dead set on delivering on it: Rock her classes, set herself up for medical school, and meet a good, respectable guy that she’s going to someday marry. What isn’t part of her plan are Jell-O shots, a lovable, party animal roommate she can’t say ‘no’ to, and Ashton, the gorgeous captain of the men’s rowing team. Definitely him. He’s an arrogant ass who makes Livie’s usually non-existent temper flare and everything she doesn’t want in a guy. Worse, he’s best friends and roommates with Connor, who happens to fits Livie’s criteria perfectly. So why does she keep thinking about Ashton?

As Livie finds herself facing mediocre grades, career aspirations she no longer thinks she can handle, and feelings for Ashton that she shouldn’t have, she’s forced to let go of her last promise to her father and, with it, the only identity that she knows.
