Orange Is the New Black meets Jennifer Probst’s New York Times bestselling Marriage to a Billionaire trilogy, featuring a strong-minded prison tutor who discovers that her sexy bad-boy student is far more than he appears to be.

Haunted by nightmares of her father’s street murder fifteen years ago, Kat Lane decides to face her fears and uphold his legacy of helping others by teaching inmates at a New York prison. There she meets arrogant Wesley Carter, who’s as handsome as he is dangerous, as mysterious as he is quick-witted, and with a reputation that ensures people will keep their distance.

As teacher and student, Kat and Carter are forced to leave their animosities at the door and learn that one should never judge a book by its cover. As Carter’s barriers begin to crumble, Kat realizes there’s much more to her angry student than she thought, leaving them to face a new, perilous obstacle: their undeniable attraction to one another.

When Carter is released and Kat continues to tutor him on the outside, the obstacles mount. Can they fight the odds to make their relationship work? Will Kat’s family and friends ever accept her being with someone of his background? And will Kat’s discovery of Carter’s role on the night her father died force them apart forever…or unite them?

WOW!!! What an incredibly stunning book!

I’ll admit, the second I read the blurb for A Pound of Flesh, I wanted to read it ASAP. A teacher falling for her sexy prison student? HELL YES, sign me up!! I ended up absolutely adoring Kat and Carter’s story – I’m so glad I got to experience them and their profound love.

When Kat was young, she tragically witnessed her father’s murder, but vowed to follow through with what he wanted for her to do in life. She helps others by teaching a literature class at Arthur Kill Correctional Facility. She loves her job – it’s what she’s born to do, but a certain sexy, bad boy student tempts her in ways she’s never felt before. He’s her student, in prison, so he’s off-limits, but she can’t get him out of her head.

“You should be scared, Peaches,” he murmured. “I’ve done things that would make your pretty little head spin, and, you being this close”–he gestured with his chin between them–“well, let’s just say”–his eyes met hers–“it just makes me want to be bad all over again.”

Wesley Carter took the fall for a friend for a crime he didn’t commit and is nearing the end of his sentence in prison. He’s forced to take a literature class, where he meets the beautiful, caring Kat. He believes he’s not good enough but wants her anyway – there’s an undeniable chemistry between them that only amps up once he’s released and they have private lessons together. I absolutely LOVED the way the author was able to mesh the forbidden-ness of their relationship with how genuinely attracted Kat and Carter were to each other. The chemistry between them is a slow, sensual burn that soon ends up consuming them.

“Just one taste. Just one. That’s all I want.”
And then his lips pressed against hers.
Oh God.

Carter is so. damn. sweet. I was expecting this sexy bad boy, and while we get that (and he is HOT!), we also see such a beautiful, heartwarming side to him that he only shows Kat. He completely melted my heart every time he was sweet to Kat, his Peaches. He’s so protective of her, all the while exuding this aura of confidence and sexiness. There are just so many wonderful layers to this man, and as we get to see his vulnerable sides, it’s hard not to fall for him.

“You’re everything to me, Peaches. You always have been. Always. You’re the best thing I’ve ever had in my life.” He kissed her. “You’re my everything.”

Kat is a wonderful heroine. I may not have connected with her as much as I would have liked, but her story hooked me in from the start. She’s a gorgeous, independent woman who sees more in Carter than anyone ever has. She has a big heart, and I just really liked her character.

The thing is, while I never really connected with Kat or Carter, I truly enjoyed their story. It’s gorgeously written, and although the pacing was sometimes slow, I was able to get over that. The romance swept me away, and I loved that there was no unnecessary drama for Kat and Carter. A Pound of Flesh is simply a stunning story of them finding each other and falling deeply, passionately in love. It’s a beautifully written, emotional book, and I highly recommend it.

Early Review: Zack by Sawyer Bennett

Zack by Sawyer Bennett

Zack by Sawyer Bennett
Series: Cold Fury Hockey #3 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: June 9th 2015
Links: Ebook • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett goes for a hat trick with the latest romance in a sexy series about cool-as-ice hockey players and the women heating up their lives.

Warning: The following contains spoilers from a cliffhanger in Garrett.

Rising star Zack Grantham has been stuck in a downward spiral of grief that has put his career on hold. Back on the road with the Carolina Cold Fury, still crippled by emotional baggage, and now a single dad, he’s in need of some serious help with his son. But while the nerdy new nanny wins his son’s heart, Zack isn’t sure he’s ready for a woman’s touch—even after getting a glimpse of the killer curves she’s hiding under those baggy clothes.

Kate Francis usually keeps men like Zack at a distance. Though his athlete’s body is honed to perfection, he refuses to move on with his life—and besides, he’s her boss. Still, the sparks between them are undeniable, tempting Kate to turn their professional relationship into a personal one. But before she makes a power play for Zack’s wounded heart, Kate will have to open him up again and show him that love is worth the fight.

OH MY GOD. YES. I. Loved. Zack! I’d been seriously SO excited for Zack’s book after reading what happened to him in Garrett. My heart was devastated for him… But I knew that his tragedy would make for an even better book. And yes, Zack absolutely did not disappoint! It’s currently my favorite of the Cold Fury Hockey series, which I highly recommend! It’s a fantastic series about hot, sexy hockey players who fall hard for their women… what’s not to love!?

Zack is a lot different than the two previous books in the series. It has a more serious tone to it, and at the same time, I laughed the hardest in this book. An odd combination, but Sawyer Bennett rocked it. I was a bit worried about how Zack would play out, but I should’ve trusted the author from the beginning. I absolutely adored Zack and Kate’s story – I loved the angst, the forbidden-ness, the sweet moments… it really was a fantastic book.

My insides feel dead, my capacity to care for much of anything seems lost, but there are two things that still keep me functioning. It’s the prospect of playing hockey again, and, most important, my son, Ben.

Zack Grantham is grief-stricken and devastated over the accident that led to the death of Gina, the mother of his son, Ben. Even though he never married Gina, he still loved her, and his heart is still in mourning over her. But life moves on, and when Zack is finally able to get back into hockey, he needs to hire a nanny to take care of Ben when he’s away.

Enter Kate Francis. A dorky, nerdy, hilarious twenty-three year old woman working her way through college. Kate is seriously the most endearing, adorkable heroine ever. I honestly love Kate more than Zack, because she’s just so funny, heartwarming, and incredible. I love Zack too, but he got frustrating sometimes… But Kate is pure heart and gold. I adored the way she took care of Ben and grew to actually love him. She’s so great with him, and she’s fantastic with dealing with a grieving Zack. She’s the only person to have been able to make him smile and laugh since Gina died.

Zack may not have thought much about Kate when she first starts working, but one glimpse of Kate in her short, revealing pajamas and Zack is hooked. The tension between Kate and Zack is out of this world… this book is hot, hot, hot!!! I was fanning myself like crazy once they start a sex-only relationship. Some scenes, like the one in Zack’s man cave… hot. damn. Of course, Zack doesn’t want feelings involved between them because he thinks he’s no longer capable of love after Gina. Which I get, but Zack is stubbornly oblivious to his own growing feelings for Kate.

There’s a part of me that wants to show her everything.
To show here all about exploration and intimacy and all of the different ways I could make her come. I want to learn her body and have her get to know mine. I want her wild with abandon, and every time I take her I want it to be in a way that completely possesses her.

Zack was frustrating in this book, with his refusal to accept his loving Kate, yes, but it was the kind of frustrating that I could understand. Sawyer Bennett did an excellent job in writing and explaining Zack’s character – we can appreciate how he loved Gina, but we can firmly see that Zack grows to be IN LOVE with Kate. His love for the mother of his son doesn’t at all diminish his love for Kate.

“You were what has been missing all my life.”

What was so unexpected about this book was how funny it was. I was expecting the angst, what with the guilt and forbidden aspect to Kate and Zack’s relationship, but I had no idea I would be cracking up so much throughout this book! Kate is so, SO funny. She says the most hilarious, crazy, adorkable things… she’s a complete dork! And Ben was absolutely adorable too – Ben and Zack together totally melted my heart.

If you’re a fan of the series, Zack is a must read! It wrung so many feelings out of me, but by the end I was smiling like a goofball. It was the perfect combination of sexy, angsty, and emotional. Aside from Zack’s frustrations, this book was nearly perfect!

Will Martin re-capture Kaitlyn’s heart? Can Kaitlyn and Martin ever be just friends? Or, despite an abundance of chemistry, are some bonds just too unstable to endure?

Oh my god. I’m so freaking in love with this series, and I’m incredibly sad that this is Martin and Katy’s last book. But what a fantastic ending to a series I absolutely adore! I’m going to miss Kaitlyn and Martin – these are two characters who have completely stolen my heart, and I never want it back. Penny Reid is a goddess for creating these two wonderful, amazing characters. I never wanted their story to end, but the way it did… I couldn’t have imagine it better!

For those who haven’t read the series yet, I want to include as little spoilers as possible. So Capture… it starts off nine months after that god-awful cliffhanger from Heat. Things are completely different for Katy and Martin and their relationship. They both have been moving forward in their professional lives, but regarding their relationship? There’s still work to be done.

I love Katy. And Martin. And Katy and Martin together. They are honestly perfect in their flawed, intelligent, humorous ways. They’re the kind of characters who I want to hug and smoosh to my chest and never let go, because they are just so real in that honest, intelligent way.

“Thank you, Martin. Thank you for finding me in that chemistry closet and seeing me in the first place. Thank you for helping me see myself.”

Katy is a heroine I adored – she may have been frustrating at times, but it was with good reason. I loved being in her head and I loved her quirkiness and awkwardness. And Martin. Holy mackeral, this boy, this man. He’s certainly grown up in Capture – he’s now so much more mature and less quick to reach his temper. But of course, he’s still sexy as hell. The things he says and does make my heart swoon and pound. I’m so in love with him! He’s been a book boyfriend of mine since he first appeared in Attraction

“I don’t want a beautiful week with you. I want a beautiful lifetime.”

Basically, I loved this book. A few frustrations, some miscommunications aside, this book was perfect. Buuut I can’t give this a full 5 heart rating because I just wasn’t as completely OBSESSED with this final book as much as I was with the first book. Still, don’t let that deter you from reading this book, or this series. Penny Reid has written a phenomenal series. I absolutely adore her writing and can’t wait to read her other books. If you haven’t read the Elements of Chemistry series, I recommend you start it ASAP! It seriously is one of the best written series I’ve ever read. It’s certainly become one of my favorite series of all time!

Maybe love, at its essence, is being a mirror for another person–for the good parts and the bad. Perhaps love is simply finding that one person who sees you clearly, cares for you deeply, challenges you and supports you, and subsequently helps you see and be your true self.
Love, I decided, is being a sidekick.

WOW. Wowowow!!!! I freaking loooove Kaitlyn and Martin! Penny Reid blew me away AGAIN with this second installment of the Elements of Chemistry series. Heat was so deliciously hot and sexy… It’s title is very apt for the stuff that goes on between Kaitlyn and Martin in this book. I was a little disappointed how there wasn’t as much heat as I wanted in the first book… but I should’ve known I spoke too soon, because ALL that sexiness goes down in Heat. And while I loved the hot and heavy stuff, what shines in this novel is the incredible character development and relationship growth for Kaitlyn and Martin. Penny Reid is a fantastic writer who’s able to capture the wonder and passion of true love, as well as its hardships and downfalls.

“Maybe you’re right, maybe I don’t know how to treat people. But I meant it when I said that I… fucking hell, I want you. I like you. I’m all in. I’m not a liar and I’m doing my best here. You need to meet me part way.”

I loved getting to know more about Kaitlyn and Martin and getting to see how their relationship expanded and developed. These two are meant to be together, and they’re trying to find a way to make their relationship work and survive once they’re back in the real world. The chemistry amps up in Heat, but so do the frustrations. Kaitlyn and Martin are both highly intelligent people, but they’re not perfect. Despite their flaws, I still loved these two characters. I’m a bit addicted to them and their story. They have so many beautiful, tender, sweet moments that it’s hard not to fall in love with them.

“I don’t think you understand how badly I want you.”

I was utterly swept away by this book. Falling in love is a completely new concept for Kaitlyn and Martin and being in love changes how they view themselves and each other. Kaitlyn has always been a cautious person, guarding her heart, but with Martin, she’s able to open up and trust another person with her heart. Martin is completely head-over-heels in love with Kaitlyn and willing to do almost anything for her, when in the past he was very much a selfish person. Their romance is one that is unique, heartfelt, honest, and real.

“Why do people care about each other? What is attraction? I can’t give you a list of reasons why I react to you like I do. This isn’t an equation to balance. You’re the one I’m always thinking about. It’s you. It just is.”

Both Kaitlyn and Martin were a little frustrating in this book, so that’s why I can’t give a full 5-heart rating. Still, if you loved Attraction, you are going to LOVE Heat. Penny Reid just continues to amaze me with the incredible amount care she puts in the depth and growth in her characters. This book – this series – is well-written, witty, and so much fun to read.

Review: Confess by Colleen Hoover

Confess by Colleen Hoover

Confess by Colleen Hoover
Series: Standalone
Publication Date: March 10th 2015
Links: Ebook • Paperback • Audible • Goodreads

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a new novel about risking everything for love—and finding your heart somewhere between the truth and lies.

Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.

For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover Owen is keeping major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.

The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin…

Colleen Hoover is, without a doubt, my top favorite author of all time. I’ve loved every book she’s ever published. She just has this way of writing these unique, heartfelt, romantic, utterly captivating novels that rip your heart out and stomp on it and then mend it back together. So yeah, her books aren’t exactly easy on the heart to read, but that’s why I love them. She creates characters that are so achingly flawed but real, who you can’t help but love and adore. Her writing is impeccable as always. And I’m happy to say Confess is another win from Colleen Hoover! I honestly don’t think there’s a book she can write that I won’t love. Confess is a beautiful, heartwarming, magical book I wholeheartedly enjoyed.

“They’re all confessions,” I say in awe. “Are these from actual people? People you know?”
He shakes his head and motions toward the front door. “They’re all anonymous. People leave their confessions in the slot over there, and I use some of them as inspiration for my art.”

Okay, first off, I am just so in awe of how Colleen Hoover is able to think up such unique, mind-blowing, twist-y storylines. Every time I pick up a CoHo book, I finish thinking, “This is why she’s the author and I’m the reader.” With Confess, we have a hero who creates art based on confessions. The confessions themselves take a life of their own in this book. Some are gut-wrenching, others are heartwarming, but each and every one of them is painstakingly real, because they ARE real. Right before the prologue, the author notes that the confessions are “true confessions, submitted anonymously by readers.” Basically, before the book even starts, Colleen Hoover already has me intrigued, and she manages to keep me hooked throughout the rest of the book.

I could tell her how I know her. Make her realize why I have this overwhelming urge to protect her. But some secrets I’ll take to my grave, and this is definitely one of them.

Auburn Reed has just moved to Texas and is in desperate need of a job. Coincidently, she sees a “Help Wanted” sign at a place called Confess. It’s there she meets Confess’s owner Owen Mason Gentry (OMG – is that not the cutest thing ever?) for the first time, though we know from Owen’s POV that it’s not the first time Owen has met Auburn. I loved how multi-faceted Auburn and Owen are. On the surface, Auburn is the kind of girl who is introverted and doesn’t open up to people. Owen is funny, sweet, and a little boyish and charming. But as we read more, we also delve deeper into their characters, and they become all the more interesting. Both are holding secrets, Owen more so than Auburn, and I was absolutely riveted to this book as they open up and their secrets are slowly revealed.

Some secrets should never turn into confessions. I know that better than anyone.

There’s a fierce, undeniable connection Auburn and Owen both feel and can’t deny, but as much as they want a relationship, it’s too complicated as they get caught up in between the truth and lies. Hearts get broken and it gets even more difficult for them to be together, no matter how PERFECT they are for each other. And they really are meant to be together. This book was a roller coaster of emotions – I was giggly and so happy for Owen and Auburn when they’re together, because they make the sweetest and most adorable couple ever; and then I was so heartbroken over the unfavorable circumstances they were in. God, Colleen Hoover really made my heart hurt for the both of them.

“Sometimes we don’t get second chances, Owen. Sometime things just end.”

I confess (hehe) that this isn’t my new favorite of Colleen Hoover’s – the plot does drag on for a bit in the middle of the book, which was frustrating – but nonetheless, it was an absolute delight to read. It is gorgeously written, and the characters are portrayed so honestly and endearingly. And as many heartbreaking moments there are in this book, there are also so many beautiful, tender moments between Owen and Auburn that make you sigh and go Aawwww. I freaking adored this book! Reading Confess has only cemented my love for Colleen Hoover – she really can write anything and I won’t hesitate to read it. Everyone needs to read Confess!

My mother says there are people you meet and get to know, and then there are people you meet and already know. I feel like Owen is the latter.

4.5 (OMG I love this book) hearts!
