Light meets dark. Secrets meet truth.

It’s been three years, twenty-five weeks, and five days since Isis Blake fell in love, and if she has it her way, it’ll stretch into infinity.

After a run-in with her mom’s ex-boyfriend, she scrabbles to remember what she’s lost to amnesia. Her ex-nemesis Jack falls deeper into a pit of despair, and his girlfriend Sophia does all she can to keep him to herself. But as Isis’ memories return, she finds it harder and harder to resist what she felt for Jack, and Jack finds it impossible to stay away from the only girl who’s ever melted the ice around his heart.

As the dark secrets surrounding Sophia emerge, Isis realizes Jack isn’t who she thought he was. He’s dangerous. But when Isis starts receiving terrifying emails from an anonymous source, that danger might be the only thing protecting her from something far more threatening.

Her past.

 3 Years

25 Weeks

5 Days

“Are you alright, sir?”

I look up at the voice. A bellboy smiles cheerily at me. He has no idea who I am, or what I’ve been through, yet he has the nerve to smile. It’s been nineteen days since Isis Blake forgot about me. And yet he has the nerve to ask if I’m alright.

I light another cigarette.

“Get out of my face.”

His expression falls, and he backs away. “S-Sure. Have a nice night.”

I scoff and lean against a pillar of the grand marble roundabout of the Hilton hotel. I watch ridiculously fancy black cars shuffle in and out, dropping off equally puffed-up old rich people. Bellboys and concierges scurry around, calling taxis and directing valets. Revolving glass doors with gold accents constantly whirr and hiss over the mindless chatter. Women shriek with laughter, men guffaw; all of them oblivious, happy idiots. I can see the truth in their clothes and posture – five of the men are cheating on their wives. Two of them with far younger women, one of them exclusively with prostitutes. He not-so-subtly taps the ass of a passing blonde in a peacoat. She hides her grimace with an actress’ grace. When she sees me, she clips over in her heels with a mildly happier smile.

“Jaden! Oh my god! It’s been forever!”

“Three months, Lily.” I correct.

“Three months, forever, same difference.” She laughs. Perfume wafts off her – the expensive, strong kind. The kind you buy when you have to cover up the pervasive smell of sex.

“Finished with work?” I ask, and jerk my head at the man still watching her lecherously, his wife oblivious and clinging to his arm. Lily sighs.

“Yeah, for the night. I’m about to head back to my place. What about you?”

“Mayor’s daughter.” I motion to my tuxedo. “Winter ball.”

“Bet you were the hottest guy there.”

“It was a Catholic girls’ school.”

“And the hottest guy she’ll ever have.”

Lily is just a few years older than me, but she’s been in the Rose Club far longer. Lily isn’t her real name, just like Jaden isn’t mine. I don’t know her in real life, and she doesn’t know me. But sometimes we work in the same hotels, and she’s one of the few girls in the Rose Club who isn’t annoyingly bland. So we talk.

“Seriously.” Lily elbows me. “I’ve seen her. She looks like an inbred Pomeranian on her best days.”

“Now now,” I blow smoke into the sky. “Let’s not be nasty. She paid good money. And I respect and appreciate money.”

Lily watches my face carefully as she waits for a taxi to cycle past. She furrows her thin brows.

“What about your own prom?” She asks.

“What about it?”

“Are you going to that? Do you have a girlfriend? Or a date?”

I took Sophia to my Junior prom. But it’s not Sophia who pops into my head. An image of Isis grows strong, dressed up in some silk dress. Red? Or blue? Purple, probably, to match her hair. She’d dance and drink and start at least four fights. It would be awful. It would be hilarious. I smirk at the thought, but it quickly fades.

“No. I’m not going to the Senior one. It’s pointless – I’m graduating in five months, anyway. High school barely matters anymore.”

She plucks the cigarette from my lips and grinds it under her heel. “When did you start smoking?”

“When did you start seeing fit to mother me?” I snarl.

“It’s not good for you.”

“Neither is whoring.”

Lily glowers. “We both have our reasons for doing that. You don’t have a reason to smoke. Unless you want to die early and painfully.”

“And if I did, it would be none of your business.”

Lily looks wounded. She hails a passing cab, and pauses in its open door to look back at me.

“You’re one of us, Jaden,” She murmurs. “Society looks down on us. Customers objectify us. All we have is each other. So it is my business.” She pulls out her Rose Club card – white with pale gold stripes – and hands it to me. “If you ever need anything, or if you wanna talk, call me.”

She’s gone before I can throw it back at her – gone before the gaping chasm in my chest has the chance to begin to bleed. I shake it off. I’m Jack Hunter. No one makes me bleed.

Except one girl, at a party, nearly five months ago.

I light another cigarette to cover the stench of weakness emanating off me. The women at the hotel’s entrance are eyeing me. If I so much as flinch in their direction, they’ll accost me, flirting with tired tactics and worn eagerness. They are just as bad as the men. They covet things that look nice. And when they can’t have what they covet, they squabble; quickly turning on each other in sickening displays of predatory possessiveness.

I consider throwing Lily’s card in a nearby puddle. She has no idea what I’m going through. I have no idea what I’m going through. She can’t help me. Besides, her help is offered solely because she has designs on me. Even an idiot can see that much.

‘Not everything with a vagina likes you, dipshit!’

I whirl around at the sound of the voice. It’s so clear, so perfectly loud and obnoxious that it has to be her. But no purple streaks bob out of the crowd to greet me. No warm brown eyes crinkle with a smirk.

I fall against the pillar again and laugh, putting my head in my hands as reality slips through my fingers. Get it together, Jack Hunter. You’re going to Harvard in seven months. Your mother is waiting for you to come home. Sophia is counting on you. Her surgery is imminent. You can’t go crazy. Belina needs your help. People are depending on you. You have a life to live, and no matter how much you wish on stars, no matter how much you bargain with God, or with the doctors, that life does not include Isis Blake any longer. You’re a stranger to her.

The hole she burned in the ice must be mended.

There is no warmth, anymore. You barely tasted it, barely felt it on your skin. It brushed against you for a single second. Something so small should not retain this much weight. It is illogical. You are illogical for letting it affect you so much.

There is no warmth, Jack Hunter. Not for the likes of you.

You have blood on your hands. You have duty, and guilt, and you can’t escape that. No one can help you escape.

Not even her.

“Jaden!” A shrill voice makes me look up. Cynthia, the Mayor’s daughter, waves me over to the limo. Her dark hair is over-curled and looks ridiculous. Her pink dress is too tight and low cut. Her circle of simpering friends have dropped their purses off and re-touched their makeup, and now they’re on their way to an after-party. We’re on our way. I’m being paid to be one of them, after all.

I stub my cigarette out and put on my best smile.

He turned around suddenly, his eyes meeting mine through the lens. I flushed and lowered the camera, embarrassed to have been caught not only staring but taking pictures of him. It was easy to forget that I wasn’t invisible when I was behind the camera.

I turned and began taking pictures in the other direction, trying to brush off the awkward moment, but I could feel him approaching me. I glanced over at him, and I could have sworn I felt my heart skip a beat. I’d been too distracted by his body to notice his face before, but now that I saw it…wow.

He had short brown hair and handsome, chiseled features. His sturdy jaw line was brushed with light stubble, and there was a slight dimple on his chin. His eyes were dark and deep, and I couldn’t look away. I noticed some bruising over his ribs and a small cut above his eyebrow, telltale signs that he’d been in a fight recently. Somehow it made him look rough and sexy, and a little bit dangerous. Bottom line: he was unbelievably gorgeous.

Then… he opened his mouth.

excerpt

I was distracted from my daydreaming by the most intense eyes I’ve ever seen. The were blue, the brightest blue. Although one of them had a patch of brown next to the pupil. Tan skin, blue eyes, dark brown hair. And a stare that made me uncomfortable.

I’d noticed him before. The first day of the tour, in fact. He reminded me of Henry Cavill. Broad shoulders, tight ass, bulging muscular arms and a gorgeous face. When he smiled, he had a boyish look about him, but when his lips were pressed tight, like when he was listening to Anabelle describe the sights, he looked like an alpha male. A hot, dangerous alpha male. I’d purposely avoided him because I didn’t want to give Anabelle any ammunition towards getting me fired. And now that I knew Tom had blabbed, I felt even more determined to keep my attraction in tact. I’d purposely stayed away. I hadn’t even heard his voice yet. Was he American? Canadian? British?

But, now he was staring and I couldn’t avoid him any longer.

“Auden, right?” he asked, offering me a fresh blueberry from a ziploc bag. I narrowed my eyes at him and his choice of snack. Here we were, in Amsterdam. He could buy a brownie laced with pot or a million different kinds of sweets. But, he was munching on blueberries.

“Thanks,” I said, grabbing a couple berries from the bag and popping them into my mouth. They were juicy and sweet. Almost intoxicating.

Stop it, Auden.

“Have you worked here long? I’ve never seen you before.” It was then that I really heard his accent. British. Delicious.

“I’m new. But, why would you have seen me before?” I tilted my head in confusion.

“My mates and I like to take trips every few months. Blow off steam.” He said, popping another berry into his mouth. His lips were a gorgeous shade of peach. “And Jordan’s the best.”

“I see.” I said, pressing my lips together, not knowing what else to say. It wasn’t often that a man could get me tongue tied. But, it was happening. All I could focus on was the dimple on his right cheek when he smiled. And how his left eye had a small patch of brown within the blue.

“Unique name.”

“Huh?” He snapped me out of my daze. “Uh, yeah. I guess.”

“Don’t hear it very often.” He said.

It was then that I realized I didn’t know his. And it was my job to know it. How was I going to get out of this one?

“Campbell,” he said,“Campbell Hutchins.”

“Like the soup?” I said. As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew they were unprofessional. But, he simply laughed.

“Wow, never heard that before.” He said, running his fingers through his silky brown hair, “My friends call me Hutch.”

“Seriously?” I asked, taken aback.

“What do you mean?” He looked confused.

“As in Starsky & Hutch?” I pressed.

“You are way too young to know that reference.” He said, shaking his head from side to side.

“They made a movie reboot when I was in high school. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson…remember?”

“Right.” He said with a lopsided grin. He had such a boyish charm to his smile, it was unnerving.

“Besides, you don’t seem old enough to know the original show either. That was the seventies.” I narrowed my eyes at him. He could be in his early thirties, but there was no way he was old enough to have watched that show when it was on the air.

“Saw it in reruns.” He said with a shrug.

“Nice to meet you, Starsky.” I said with a smirk. He shook his head at me and extended his hand like the English gentleman that he was. I tried my best not to feel the electrical current coursing through every nerve in my body. This was a brand new sensation. Which is saying a lot considering my boy-crazy history. This was unique and terrifying and wonderfully exciting. “Sorry, I mean Hutch of course. So, Campbell…where’d your parents think of that one?”

“Do you always interrogate tour members about their names?” he asked with a chuckle. My cheeks turned pink when I realized I usually didn’t give a crap about people’s names or the origin of said names. But, he was different. It was like I needed to know anything I could learn about this handsome stranger.

“Just answer the question,” I said, flirting with a tilt of my head and arms crossed across my chest.

For a second, everything stopped as Campbell looked down at my feet. He smirked as his eyes climbed up my calf and to my thighs. They lingered there for just a second before continuing up to my torso, my chest and finally my face. When our eyes met, he grinned and I suddenly felt as naked as the day I was born.

“Tradition.” He answered. When I looked confused (because obviously I’d forgotten the question since he’d studied every inch of my body as if he wanted to devour me). “I’m named after my great grandfather. He was kind of a hero in my town.”

“Where are you from?”

“Jersey.”

What?

“Um, no. Try again.”

“What do you mean?” he asked with a chuckle.

“I’m from the states, pal. I know when someone’s from Joi-zee and when they’re not. And you clearly are not. Where are you really from?”

He threw his beautiful head back in laughter, that dimple once again making a grand entrance on his cheek. Something twitched in my belly—desire, I think. Until I realized he was laughing at me.

“And you call yourself a tour guide? The island of Jersey…one of the Channel Islands…” His voice trailed off as he leaned his forehead in my direction. If he could read my mind, this is what it would say:

I.

Am.

A.

Dumbass.

You know those moments when you really just want to crawl in a hole and forget your poor excuse for a life? Yeah, this was one of those moments. I could never get that moment back. I could never convince this gorgeous man that I was not only aware of the Channel Islands, but had probably been to one or two of them as a child. I just wanted to slink back to the tour bus and hide behind the seats. So not like me. I didn’t let men get under my skin. Hell, I got under their skin. Who was this guy?

“Uh–Of course,” I said, stumbling on my words. “I was just kidding.”

Just then, I was saved by another member of the tour. A mousy brain haired American girl named Becca.

“Excuse me, Auden. Anabelle needs you.”

Thank God.

“I’d better, um…go,” I said.

“Until we meet again,” he said with a chuckle.

Not if I can help it. The next three weeks would be agony if I had to dodge that gorgeous man every time our bus made a stop. Lord, beer me strength.

excerpt

That was when it was time to make his move.  He let the confident feeling surge through his veins, and he stepped closer to her, close enough to touch her.  “That’s not the main reason why I came back here, though.”  He waited a few seconds to let his words register with her and then he said, “We have a little unfinished business.”

She seemed so innocent in that moment.  “We do?”

Yes, innocent maybe, but not unwilling.  He leaned over and took her face in his hands, lifting her lips to his.  He kissed her, as gently as he could allow himself to, but, goddamn, it was difficult.  He’d been imagining this moment for months now, and he wanted her badly.  Way too badly.  Fuck.  He should have jerked off in the shower, because controlling himself was going to be harder than usual.  Would losing his load have helped?  He didn’t know, but he had to stop thinking about that right now.

It was hard, though, because she tasted so sweet, and her response was just as he’d imagined.  She parted her lips and took him in.  Yeah, she was willing and eager, and all that did was fuel his fire.  She was feeling it too, that weird attraction between them igniting into something bigger than he’d expected, something he knew he’d be lucky to control.  Still…he kept his breathing (and his cock) under control for the meantime and ended the kiss.  Oh, fuck.  And she placed her hands on his pecs as though to steady herself.  It took her a few seconds to open her eyes, as though she’d been transported.  When he had her full attention, he said, “Unfinished, right?”

She gave him a tiny smile, sweet and naïve, and seemed to give the tiniest of nods.  Well, she wasn’t pushing him away.  In fact, she seemed breathless and expectant.  He wasn’t going to disappoint her, so he kissed her again, and he would have sworn it was magic.  Okay, so he never would have said something like that to one of his friends.  Ethan would have called him a pussy if he’d even known Brad had been thinking something like that.  But it was, though—it was more than just a kiss.  It felt like they deepened their connection in that moment, like he could see inside her soul and, yes, she was pure and light and everything he could ever want.

He knew her response was a sign to move forward, so he wrapped his hands around her waist and pulled her close.  Fuckin’ A.  She smelled so goddamn good and felt so right up next to him.  She moved her hands onto his neck and then slid them up into his hair, driving him insane.  Jesus…he wanted to fuck her right there, but he knew a girl like Val would need finesse.  And he wanted to give that to her.  He wanted her to know she wasn’t just a cheap lay for him.  Still, he wanted to move the proceedings forward, so he slid his hands down to her ass, using it as an excuse to press her harder into his body.

And her fingers in his hair.  Shit.  She was driving him fucking crazy.

Her breathing got deeper, so he knew he was on the right track.  He couldn’t hold it back anymore and just let the blood flow straight to his cock…like he’d be able to stop it anyway.  He moved his lips to her neck and not only did she let out a sigh, he could have sworn he heard a moan.  Fuck, yeah.  He didn’t know that a girl had ever done that before they’d actually engaged in the real deal.  He moved a hand up underneath her shirt, feeling the bare skin above her jeans, and he heard her breathing quicken again.

It was then, though, that she took a hand out of his hair and placed it firmly on his chest.  No.  Fuck, no.  If he was reading her right, she was putting on the brakes.

“Brad…please stop.”

He opened his eyes and looked in hers.  “Stop?”

“Yeah.”

Why was she changing her mind?  Was that really what she wanted?  He had to try one more time.  He kissed her again.  Yeah, there were those sparks.  Could she deny them?  “Stop that?”

She blinked.  “Yes.”

“You don’t seem so sure…”  He pressed his forehead on hers and bore into her eyes with his.  He wanted to understand.  “What’s wrong?”

She moved both hands to his chest.  She wasn’t pressing against him as if to push him away, but they seemed to ground her.  “I…It’s not you, Brad.  Oh, God, it’s not you.  I swear.  I want you bad.”

That’s what he’d thought.  “So why not?  If you’re worried about birth control…”  He wasn’t going to be irresponsible.  She had to know that.

She hesitated.  “No.  I’m…um…  I’m a…”

“Virgin?”  He knew it even before she nodded her head.  “Oh.”  He nodded too as if to process the information.  “Oh.  Yeah.  Uh…your first time should be…special, right?  At least, for girls.  I didn’t give much of a shit.”  He didn’t know how to do that for her, not right now, anyway.  He was nearly out of his mind with desire, and she was pulling the plug.  He needed a bathtub of ice water to jump in.  She giggled and, in spite of his feelings of desperation, he found it endearing.  But then it dawned on him.  Fuck.  He had to know.  As much as it was gonna hurt, he needed to know.  Her eyes all but said it, but he needed to confirm it.  “That’s not it, though.  It’s Ethan, isn’t it?  You still care about him.”  She didn’t say a word.  She didn’t need to.  It was written all over her face…

I’m sitting in front of her as she leans back on my desk, proofing a letter for me. Her hair is pulled up into a messy bun, exposing that spot right at the nape of her neck that drives her crazy when I run my tongue over it. As usual her makeup is light and natural, except today she’s wearing a deep red lipstick, making her lips look extra pouty. She raises the pen she’s holding and slips the tip of it into her mouth. My dick immediately twitches. My eyes roam down her body admiring the way her light gray dress glides over every curve so smoothly. I wonder if she’s even wearing panties. I shift uncomfortably in my chair. Looking down I recognize the sexy black heels with the strap around the ankle. They were draped over my shoulders and digging into my back a couple of nights ago when I had Mabry on the edge of the dining room table, my face buried between her thighs. I look back up, trying to control the urge to shove her dress up and have a repeat performance of that night. My eyes stop at the wide black leather belt around her waist. Fuck me. We’ve used that on occasion too. No matter what part of her body my eyes land on, my dick reacts.  I know she feels my gaze because her nipples are hard and straining against the material of her dress. I take in a deep breath and let it out quickly.

“You sure you wouldn’t be more comfortable sitting on my lap?” I smirk up at her.

The corners of her mouth curl up into a sexy grin. The pen she’s holding is aimed in my direction. “We agreed. No funny business at work.”

I run my hand up her thigh and feel the shiver that moves through her body.

Sweet baby Jesus! I think I feel a garter.

“Sweetness, the business I’m thinking about engaging in would definitely not be funny. I hope it wouldn’t be anyway.” I start easing out of my chair, inching my way up her body as I say, “That’d be quite a blow to my ego if you were to laugh as I bring you to the ultimate height of ecstasy.” I flash her the smile as I cock my eyebrow.

We’re face-to-face now. My hands planted firmly on either side of her hips, caging her in. Her chest rises and falls a little faster than normal as she looks directly at me. My lips skim down the side of her face heading towards her mouth, and I nibble lightly at the corners. She’s so caught up in the moment, I’m able to take the letter from her and toss it on to my desk.

Moving my mouth to her ear, I whisper, “Let’s play hot secretary and bossy naughty boss.”
