Everyone Has a Secret

At nineteen, Ellie Martin is finally happy. Deliriously, delightfully, delectably happy. Her junior year in college, while not without some major issues, is turning out better than she ever dreamed. She’s finally found closure to a question that has bothered her for as long as she can remember. She’s even been able to put some serious distance between herself and her twisted mother. Best of all, she’s in love with the hot, handsome, and mysterious Logan Walker.

If only she could share with Logan the one thing she must keep secret. The one relationship that, if he finds out about it, will blow apart everything that brings her happiness.

Even as Ellie and Logan learn to open up to each other, even as they get closer than they’ve ever gotten to anyone else before, the reckless secrets they’re holding on to may just be the thread that unravels everything.

Excerpt

I’d barely finished refreshing my makeup when my phone buzzed with a text from Logan. I’m at the front door.

The dorm was locked at all times. You needed a key to get in. I texted him back. Coming! Ha ha. I grabbed my coat, gloves, and tray, slid the tray beneath my coat for stealth, and dashed to meet Logan. Just before I opened the front door to the dorm it struck me—maybe we should have stolen three trays. What was Logan going to do for a tray? Take turns?

My heart caught when I saw him, just like it always did. He was so incredibly hot, even bundled in a snowboarding jacket and black and gray beanie, the kind that flopped over the back of his head. I shouldn’t have worried about the tray. Logan was carrying one.

He grabbed me and pulled me against him, kissing me with that fierce passion I lived for. His tongue was hot and talented in my mouth, giving me tingles all the way to my toes. When he pulled away, I was breathless.

He tapped my chest. “New bra? I don’t like it. Too hard and plastic-y. Has a nice, hollow tap, though.”

I laughed and pulled the tray out from beneath my coat. “Smart ass. I was being covert. The university will give you three to five hard labor if they catch you lifting one of these.” I pointed at his. “Where did you get that?”

He shook his head and laughed. “The dining hall. Almost four years ago.”

“You’re supposed to return that after you use it.”

He grinned. “I have every intention—when I graduate. This is a four-year loaner model.”

“I see.”

He took my gloved hand in his and led me out from beneath the covered front porch. “Isn’t it gorgeous?” he said, but he was staring at me. “You look good enough to eat.” He nuzzled my neck.

I laughed and pushed him away. “Wolf.”

“Yeah,” he said, pulling me along.

The streets were full of students playing in the white stuff.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“Only to the best damn traying hill on campus.” He led me to the large grass hill between the architecture building and the honors hall. It was covered with students sledding down on trays. The sound of laughter echoed off the buildings.

“If the university ever wises up and actually wants to catch tray thieves, this would be the place to look,” I said.

“Yeah.” He nodded. “If you see campus security coming—run! It’s every man for himself.” He kissed me again and pulled me to the top of the hill and tray run. At the top of the run, he pulled a small piece of snowboard wax and a lighter from his pocket and grinned evilly. “Give me your tray.”

“What are you up to?”

“Take a look at everyone else as they slide down the hill. These things need a little help.” He winked and used the lighter to melt the wax onto the bottom of my tray. Then he pulled a tri-shaped scraper from his pocket and scraped the excess off and buffed it. He sat the tray on the ground in front of me. “You’re good to go. Hop on. But be careful. This thing’s going to rocket.”

I shook my head. “I’ll wait for you.”

“I’m ready to go. I waxed my board at home. Now get on.”

He held my tray while I sat and wedged myself on it. “Hold on to the edge of the tray. These things have a way of scooting out from under you. Keep your feet up and aim straight for the bottom of the hill. On my count, push off. Three, two…” He slapped his tray on the hill next to mine. “One!” He gave me a push, jumped on his tray, and we were off.

His tray slid right and true down the hill, passing me almost immediately. He had the technique down. I wobbled and got sideways, falling off my tray less than halfway down. My tray slid away from me. Logan was already at the bottom. He ran up and retrieved my tray, then gave me a hand up, pulling me into his arms.

“I suck.”

He shook his head and kissed me lightly as the snow fell on us. “First time’s a bitch. You’ll get the hang of it.” He grabbed my hand and pulled me to the top again.

The second time, I got it. And it was like flying—the best thing ever. Better than sledding. Better than boarding. ‘Cause I was with Logan. And about a thousand other students on the hill. But they hardly seemed to exist at all, except to add to the joy with their laughter and squeals. I screamed all the way down.

Logan beat me to the bottom of the hill. I tumbled off my tray into the snow just as I reached him, laughing. He caught my tray and grinned at me. “Well?”

“Again!”

We ran back to the top of the hill, hand in hand, carrying our trays, and went again and again. The seventh or eighth time down, I tumbled off my tray and rolled flat onto my back at the bottom of the hill, looking up into the falling snow as it caught in my eyelashes. Laughing, I opened my mouth to catch snowflakes and waved my arms in the snow, making a snow angel.

Logan rolled on top of me, poised above me, braced on his hands in the snow, studying me. “You’re so beautiful, El. So beautiful.” He kissed the tip of my icy nose.

phantom

Phantom (Dark Musicals #1) by Laura DeLuca

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card.

Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist.

Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.

demon

Demon (Dark Musicals #2) by Laura DeLuca

When Justyn and Rebecca set off to attend the New York School of Performing Arts, they think their dreams are about to come true. To their dismay, they aren’t in high school anymore, and the competition is steep. Rebecca must compete against accomplished singers for a role in the production of Demon Barber, including a stunning Gothic diva with her sights set on Justyn.

It doesn’t help that things keep disappearing from their apartment or that Rebecca’s father refuses to accept that Justyn is an essential part of her life. Yet, all this seems minimal in comparison to the serial rapist terrorizing the campus.

Consumed by fear and obsessed with revenge, Rebecca and Justyn start living the story of Sweeney Todd—both on and off the stage.

Hyde (Dark Musicals #3) by Laura DeLuca

Rebecca Hope has looked death in the face twice and lived to tell her tale.

She and the love of her life, Justyn Patko, land a summer internship at a local dinner theater, performing the musical Hyde. While they are excited about their first paid acting gig, they soon find themselves surrounded by more experienced cast mates, jealous of their success. As if the tension isn’t bad enough, they soon discover that the business might be a front for something much more sinister.

When Justyn is accused of a crime that she knows he would never commit, Rebecca must decide if she wants to follow her head or her heart. While trying to prove his innocence, she makes a shocking discovery of her own.

Everyone has something to conceal in the grand finale of the Dark Musicals Trilogy. Rebecca has to look beyond the façade to discover the true Hyde or face her final curtain call.

Demon Excerpt

Rebecca unwound the silver ribbon. When she lifted the lid, she found two matching pendants, each laced to a long hemp chain. They were shaped sort of like seashells, with an endless spiral pattern that looped out from the center as the chambers grew larger. They were dark brown in color with a few hints of tan along the edges. The stones had been polished and smoothed on both sides, but when she lifted them, she could see that the two pieces fit together perfectly. She swore the halves fought to snap together, like magnets in her hand. There was an energy pulsing and vibrating within the stones that even a novice witch like Rebecca could feel.

“They’re beautiful,” Rebecca whispered as she ran her hand along the intricate grooves.

“It’s an ammonite.” Justyn lifted one of the pendants, brushed her hair to the side, and hooked the clasp around her neck. His breath tickled her skin as his hands moved with graceful dexterity, giving her goose bumps despite the humid August night. “They’re actually fossils that are millions of years old, named after Ammon, an ancient Egyptian deity. When they’re divided in half, they’re perfect mirrors of one another. Some cultures believe that if the two halves are given to lovers, it will bind them together forever. When made into necklaces, they’re often called soul mate pendants.”

“Wo-wow,” Rebecca stuttered. As usual, the sentiment behind Justyn’s gift was even more beautiful than the gift itself. It left her a little flustered. “That’s amazing. How do you know all this stuff?”

“You don’t spend eighteen years living with Darlene without learning a thing or two.”

Rebecca laughed. Justyn’s mother Darlene was definitely something special. EMT, exotic belly dancer, and Wiccan High Priestess were only a few of the titles she claimed. Rebecca knew she was a fountain of earth-based knowledge after years of studying the Craft. As Darlene’s new apprentice, Rebecca greedily dipped into that knowledge herself as often as possible.

“It’s beautiful,” Rebecca repeated, too overcome with emotion to think of anything more eloquent to say. “You certainly know how to make things interesting.”

“Like I told you on our first date, I try not to be boring.” He winked at her. “So … are you going to put mine on for me?”

“Oh yeah … sorry.”

Rebecca giggled as she lifted the hemp chain. She wasn’t nearly as graceful as Justyn. She almost dropped the necklace in the sand three times before she managed to get the clasp locked. When she finally had it secured, he placed his hand over her heart, where the ammonite lay. He did the same with her hands, lifting them to his chest. His dark eyes had lost all glimmer of humor. He met her gaze with a stare filled with genuine emotion. Beneath her fingers, she could feel the gentle, steady rhythm of his heart beating in perfect tune with her own.

“Our love will span both space and time. In this life and the next, you shall be mine. All eternity I will be by your side. For a love so strong cannot be denied. Spirit and flesh merged into one. So mote it be, for all days to come.”

When he was done with the recitation, he kissed her. Not just a gentle brush, but a deep, passionate embrace that left her throat tight and her heart pounding with a familiar  yearning.

“I’ve never heard that poem before,” she said once she’d caught her breath. “Who are you quoting?”

Even in the moonlight, she could see him blush. “I guess I was quoting myself. It was really more of an incantation than a poem though. These necklaces are meant to be a symbol of our love, and it seemed a little spell work could only add to the power of the stones. There is power in words, Becca. Just like there is power in nature.”

“You mean, you wrote that?”

He nodded, but his eyes twinkled, and the playfulness was back in his voice. “Well, actually, I just made it up as I went along.”

“Wow. Actor, singer, and now an improv poet slash chant writer. Is there anything you can’t do, Lord Justyn?”

He smiled and tilted her chin so he could look into her eyes. “I can’t stop loving you.”

It’s Complicated

I’ve always been a fan of the “I’m in love with my brother’s best friend” trope. Judging by this list at Goodreads, I’m not alone!

I’m not quite sure why that setup revs my engines but it does. It’s an inherently complicated situation with plenty of possibilities for high-stakes drama. Plus I’ve always had a thing for slightly older guys. You know, the good-looking, confident sweetheart with a bit of swagger and a protective streak a mile wide. Added bonus? The best friend of a sibling already has the family seal of approval!

Bee Langston shares my outlook. She knows that she’s just asking for trouble but she just can’t help falling head over heels for Kelly Connolly, the unbelievably sexy former Marine who takes it upon himself to watch out for her after Jeb’s death. Of course, she’d rather Kelly took a more, ahem, hands-on role in her life…

But when a stalker threatens her safety, Kelly unleashes those alpha male overprotective instincts he’s kept suppressed. Bee begins to realize they’ve only just scraped the surface of complicated!

Creating this intense, complex relationship between Kelly and Bee made this such an interesting book to write. Both characters have brothers they love and sibling bonds they would do anything to protect—even if it means keeping some pretty huge secrets. Add in Kelly’s gambling addict father and his troubles with not one but two (!) loan sharks and, well, it’s a recipe for some super intense drama that really amps up the sexual tension.

And who doesn’t love more of that?

Excerpt

I take another step toward him, building up the nerve to just do it, just kiss him.  But Hemi surprises me when he takes the step that will bring us near enough to touch.

He’s so close, my chest almost brushes his every time I inhale. I sway toward him the tiniest bit, craving the contact.  With him.  A perfect stranger.

“Sloane,” he whispers, the sound of my name on his lips bringing chills to my arms again.  He reaches out to push my hair back over my shoulder.  His fingertips linger on the skin of my neck before they fall away.

“Hemi,” I sigh, melting into the heat of his eyes.  I knew there was something between us. Well, I’d hoped. Hoped I wasn’t imagining it. But now I know I wasn’t.  It’s there, staring out at me from behind his hooded midnight eyes. Blatant and unabashed, he wants me.  And I want him, too.

“You need to walk out that door and never come back.”

My heart stops.  Of all the things I thought he might say, this came out of nowhere.  “What?” I ask in a small, uncertain voice.

“You need to leave.  And don’t look back.”

I scramble to recover.  “But…but what about the rest of my tattoo?”

“I’m not talking about your tattoo and you know it.”

“Then what are you talking about?” I inquire, playing dumb to save what’s left of my crumbling pride.

“I’m talking about you.  And me.  This. Us.”

“There is no us.”

“There will be in about thirty seconds if you don’t get the hell out of here.”

“What if I don’t want to leave?” I’m confused. Is he saying that he wants me?  Or that he wants me to go?

“I’m not asking.”

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why do you want me to go?”

“Because guys like me change girls like you.”

“Girls like me?”

“Innocent girls.”

“What if I’m not that innocent?”

His lips quirk in a wry grin.  “Oh, you’re exactly that innocent.  I can practically smell it on you. Sweet, pure, untouched.  And, if I’m being honest, I’d like nothing better than to taste that on the tip of my tongue.”

“Then what’s stopping you?”

I watch him wrestle with…something.  “I don’t have the time or the inclination to get involved in ruining someone else’s life.”

“What makes you think you’d ruin my life?”

“Oh, trust me.  I would.”

“But—”

“But nothing.  For tonight, I’ll be the good guy you need me to be.  Whether you know you need it or not. I’m asking you to leave, Sloane.  But I promise you—promise you—that if you so much as darken my doorway again, I won’t let you walk back out again.”

I’m torn between heady elation and harsh rejection.  “Hemi—”

“Go, little girl,” he says softly.  “Go before I change my mind.”
