Alexandra Monzelle is a hard-fighting, heat-packing Seattle vice cop, and she’s not much interested in being protected. Her short skirt and sex-kitten heels are tools to lure her suspects into talking about the deadly new drug hitting the streets. She can take care of herself and then some. Unfortunately, she can’t seem to get that through to Kellach Dunne.

Kellach is a fresh import from Dublin, and he’s landed at the heart of a vicious motorcycle club that deals in guns, narcotics, and mayhem. He’s all male, all rough power—and all interference in her damn investigation. Maybe he’s one of the good guys. Maybe not. Lex knows an affair with an immortal like him would risk everything. No matter how delicious he looks…

This is the first audiobook I’ve read that was entirely narrated by a male narrator! It was a much different experience than listening to an audiobook with only a female narrator – I wasn’t expecting that. Brock Thompson did a great job narrating Wicked Ride, especially when it came to the hero’s Irish dialogue. I have some mixed feelings about Wicked Ride, but overall it was a different story than what I was used to with a unique PNR world I’ve become interested in.

Alexandra Monzelle has dedicated her life to being a cop. Her father’s shady past has only made her more determined to live on the right side of the law. A new case pops up involving a deadly drugg called Apollo and Lex wants the drug off the streets. She’ll do whatever it takes to protect her city, and not even the Irish biker with the dangerously good looks and swoon-worthy accent she comes across during the case is going to get in her way.

Kellach Dunne is part of a dangerous MC club, and he’s found himself smack dab in the middle of Lex’s investigation. But there’s more to Kel than meets the eye. It turns out that he’s a witch Realm Enforcer, in the city to stop the Apollo drug himself, and Lex is his mate. She’s skeptical at first, but now that she’s been thrust into his paranormal world, everything she once knew has changed.

Even though the chemistry between them flares up anytime they’re together, Kel and Lex’s relationship does not start smoothly. The two of them go head to head with one another, both of them stubborn and not believing in their mate bond. But soon enough, Kel realizes that he does want Lex, and will do anything he can to protect Lex and make her want to be his mate.

I didn’t particularly understand the relationship that developed between Lex and Kel, since I didn’t really connect with either of them, but I really enjoyed the action in the audiobook, which there was plenty of. There’s a good amount of suspense and action to balance out the weak romance. And again, Brock’s narration was fantastic, and his voice made listening to the story all the better. It’s pretty deep and smooth, and I loved the Irish accent he had for Kel!

It was a little hard for me to choose a rating for the Wicked Ride audiobook, but I’ve decided to do 3 hearts for the story and 4 hearts for the narration, so 3.5 hearts!

Xavier has watched Gwen for years, sneaking outside her window just to watch her sleep. She calls to him in a way he doesn’t understand.

After he loses his mom and his sister in a tragic accident, he disappears into the woods and lets his wolf take over.

Gwen has been waiting around for her knight in shining armor to show up, but years have passed since she reached her mating age, and he still hasn’t come.

When Xavier makes his way back to Gray Ridge, one scent captivates him like no other…

He’s on a mission. Claiming Gwen as his mate is all that matters, even if she doesn’t remember him.

What he isn’t prepared for is Alpha Stone keeping them apart.

Warning: This fairy tale contains a hero in desperate need of his sleeping beauty, a heroine who wants to mate with her beast, and an alpha trying to keep it from happening. This is meant to be over-the-top, extra sweet, and lots of fun. Come roll around in it.

Alexa Riley’s books are seriously like crack, and I can never resist gobbling one up anytime there’s a new one out (and I love that she releases SO many, SO fast). Her stories are always so freaking HOT and fun to read – whether it’s contemporary or paranormal, Alexa Riley definitely knows how to write some smut.

Beauty Sleeps is book 2 in the Fairytale Shifter series, but can definitely be read as a standalone. This is Gwen and Xavier’s story, which I’d been looking forward to ever since reading Riding Red (my review). Xavier has been living in the woods, away from his pack, ever since the death of his mother and sister. He’s more wolf than man now, but one whiff of his mate has him ready to do whatever it takes to claim her and give her the perfect life she deserves with him.

I would never harm a single hair on my mate’s head. My life is now dedicated to hers until my last breath.

Gwen is the sister of her pack’s alpha, so to say she’s been protected and sheltered is an understatement. But now that she’s had a chance at a little freedom away from Stone, working at Ruby’s bakery, she’s happy to spread her wings. And when she finally finds her mate in Xavier, she’s not going to let anyone stop them from mating, especially not her alpha brother.

“It was always you. …It was always you, my love.”

I adored this read, as expected. It’s sweet, sexy, predictable, with an adorably sexy alpha hero, and a tough heroine that doesn’t submit easily. If you love quick, sexy PNR reads, you definitely need to give this series a try!

Prologue *Xavier*

5 years earlier

“Why do you watch me?” Her soft voice fills my ears, warming my chest. It reaches places inside me I didn’t even know existed. The sound makes my wolf lie down lazily inside me, like we could drift off just to the sound of her voice. Does she mean when I watch her now, or when she sleeps? It doesn’t matter because either way I don’t know the answer.

“I don’t know.” I tell her the truth because making up some lie to tell her just seems wrong. I can’t deny that I do it, and telling her that I don’t would be deceiving her.

She smiles at my response and goes back to doodling in the notebook in her lap. Her blonde hair falls over her face, hiding her crystal-blue eyes. I never knew eyes could be that blue. I like to watch over her when she sleeps, but during the day I like seeing her eyes more. A wolf could get lost in eyes like hers.

“If my brother catches you, he’ll have your hide.” This time when she looks back up at me, her dimples dip in her full cheeks, and it makes her youth show. I know she’s only sixteen, five years younger than me, but I’ve been watching her since the first time I saw her over ten years ago, and I can’t figure out why. I just do it, and I can’t seem to stop myself.

She’s right, though. If the alpha catches me, he’ll try to have my hide. ‘Try’ being the operative word.

“Does it bother you? I could—” I pause. I was going to say I could stop, but that would be a lie. I’m not sure I could stop myself. Something pulls me to her, and being near her is calming. It’s as if everything is right in the world. I spend my days building houses and making sure I’m keeping food on the table for my mother and sister. Since my dad passed over seven years ago, that’s all I do. I make sure they’re cared for and I work. I’m utterly content with that as long as I get a glimpse of Gwen each day. What more could I ask for?

“No. You’re kinda hot. I like looking at you, too.” Her words are bold, and I find myself blushing. She’s too young to be thinking people are hot. The idea that she thinks about boys or men that way irritates me for some reason. When I’m around her I don’t understand my feelings. I’m calmed and happy, and then I’m confused.

“I watch you when you sleep, too.” I’m not sure why I confess my secret. The words just tumble out of my mouth like she should know.

“I know.” She puts her pad down next to her and stands from the porch before making her way towards me. Her fragrance fills my lungs, and I close my eyes just to savor it. When I open them again, she’s right in front of me.

Even with her wolf shifter genes, she’s still short compared to me. She’ll still probably grow a few inches, not that that would help her when it comes to me. I’m six feet nine, and I’m sure she’ll always be at least a foot shorter than me.

She reaches up, placing her hand on my bare chest, making my wolf stir as he tries to feel her touch.

“Would you kiss me?” She takes another half-step towards me, but I take a step back, surprised by her question. Immediately, I miss her smell, and my wolf whines.

“I can’t.”

Her hand falls away and I miss the warmth of her touch. My wolf growls in my head when her smile drops away, too. He’s upset she isn’t happy anymore.

“Why?” Her voice is softer now, not as bold as before.

“You’re too young to kiss, and I will only ever kiss my mate.”

She narrows her eyes at me, the blue darkening with irritation “Wouldn’t it bother your mate that you watch me?” She raises her chin like she’s challenging me.

“I’m here to protect you.” If my protecting her would upset my mate I’d—

My brain pauses at the idea. I’d still watch her. Maybe I should steal her away, then my mate could never find me. We could live in the wild, and I could watch her all the time. I’d never have to stop.

“That’s not what I asked.” She places one hand on her hip and cocks her head to the side, waiting.

“I’ll always watch you.” This makes her smile again, and it warms me on the inside. If only I’d known this would turn out to be a lie.

Release Day Review: Feel the Burn by G.A. Aiken

Series: Dragon Kin #8 (full reading order below)

War makes strange bedfellows.

I, Gaius Domitus, one-eyed rebel dragon king of the Provinces, know that better than most, since I have to fight off half my ungrateful family on a regular basis to keep law and order here in my lands. But I never expected to have to consort with a barbarian human woman.

Kachka is beautiful, if you like them fierce—and of course I do. But she keeps complaining about how spoiled and decadent I am, and how a feared Daughter of the Steppes has no time for foolish dragons. I think she likes my eye patch, though. It is quite dashing. With death always at our tails, we take our passion like we take our allies. As they say, love the barbarian you’re with…

I absolutely LOVED the first book in the Dragon Kin series, which is the only book in the series I’d read prior to Feel the Burn. When I went into Dragon Actually, I had no idea that it would be one of the funniest books I’d ever read. Who knew dragons could be so funny!? So when I started Feel the Burn, I was expecting an awesome mix of quirky humor, sexy dragons, badass heroines, and some fun action. G.A. Aiken certainly delivers, and I had the best time reading this latest Dragon Kin book.

Gaius Domitus is the one-eyed Rebel King, and he’s out for vengeance against the cousin who tortured his twin sister. He needs to team up with Anwyl the Bloody, but somehow manages to find himself teamed up with the Daughters of the Steppes. They’re fierce barbarian women who, amusingly, look down upon men, so when Gaius finds himself saved and intrigued by one, she doesn’t give him the time of day.

“Kachka Shestakova . . . I owe you much.”
“Yes,” she replied. “You do.”
“How can I ever repay you?”
She faced him, her blade and arms covered in blood. “Give me your kingdom!”
Gaius smiled. “You’re adorable.”
“See? The royals. They say all this and they say all that . . . but they do nothing but lie.”
“We don’t lie all the time.”

I wish there had been more romance in this book! I absolutely loved Kachka and Gaius together, but they weren’t together enough. The book focused a lot more on the action and adventure part than the budding romance between the main characters, and even though it was entertaining to read, I wanted more of Kachka and Gaius together. Kachka’s a no-nonsense woman who’s blunt and has no filter, and Gaius humors and adores her.

“Why have you never chosen a husband, Kachka Shestakova?”
She smirked at him. “In love with me already, Rebel King?”
“We both know you’d be lucky if I were. I am a king and,” he teased, “pretty damn benevolent.”

The secondary characters were my favorite part of this book, besides Gaius and Kachka. The other Daughters of the Steppes and so. freaking. hilarious! Zoya totally stole the spotlight a couple of times – she’s a character you NEED to read, because she cracked me up so many times. I also loved seeing the Southland characters that I’d read in Dragon Actually, especially Anwyl. All of the characters in this series are just so fantastic to read about.

I don’t read a lot of PNR these days, though I wish I did more, but the Dragon Kin series is a unique one full of hilarity and adventure. I’ve never read anything like this series, and I’m certainly going to need to catch up on the rest of the books. If you love humor in your PNRs, you definitely need to pick up Feel the Burn.

Riding Red by Alexa Riley
Series: Fairytale Shifter #1 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: October 12th 2015

Gray Ridge, Colorado is a quiet town, but this Halloween there’s a mating moon, and the shifters’ need to breed their fated mates runs strong.

Ruby is the proud owner of Red’s Goodie Basket, and as the new girl in town, she’s looking for business. But when the local sexy sheriff, Dominic Wolfe, keeps the customers away, she finds it’s hard to stay mad when burning with desire.

Dominic is a shifter, and his wolf wants Ruby. Since the second he laid eyes on her, he’s been fighting the need to mark her as his. But when the mating moon is full, he won’t be able to control his wolf any longer.

Tricks and treats are the last things on his mind when the mating heat takes over, and his obsession is put to the test.

Warning: This story is a sexy twist on a classic fairy tale, complete with a red cape, a basket of goodies, and a hungry wolf. It’s written to make you smile, turn you on, and help you celebrate Halloween!

I’m a sucker for Alexa Riley’s smutty reads, and Riding Red is now one of my new favorites from her! It’s a sexy, paranormal retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy-tale. If you’re a fan of Alexa Riley, then you know you’re in for a treat with her entertaining, smutty reads full of alpha-males who are obsessed with their heroines, and tons of steam – and Riding Red definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Ruby has just moved into a new town and started her own little bakery, but it seems the townspeople aren’t very welcoming, and don’t go near her and her shop. What she doesn’t know is that she lives in a town of shifters, and the town sheriff has ordered everyone away from Ruby. Why? Because the second Dominic lays his eyes on Ruby, she is his. His mate.

I really enjoyed Alexa Riley’s take on shifters – it was seriously so much fun to read. And I loved how unexpectedly funny Ruby was! Her character is fantastic, and definitely perfect for Dominic, who is uber-alpha. He’s the beta of the pack, but when he finds his mate, his alpha instincts roar like crazy, and there’s nothing that can stop him from claiming her. There’s actually not as much sex as I expected in Riding Red, but that wasn’t disappointing, because the sex that occur will melt your panties off.

Alexa Riley is definitely a go-to author for quick, steamy reads. I’m hoping she’ll be writing more – more about the secondary characters in Riding Red (Gwen and Xavier!?), more smutty paranormal retellings – I’ll read anything by her!

Chapter 1 *Ruby*

“We can’t serve those!” I look down at the cookies, which are shaped like tiny dicks, and I try to convince myself I’m seeing things. It’s 5:30 in the morning, and I haven’t had any coffee yet, so maybe my brain is still putting things together. I scan the tray again, hoping I’m wrong. Nope. Definitely little cocks.

“Why not?” Gwen picks up one of the cock-shaped cookies and bites off the head, making me cringe. I don’t have a penis, but I can imagine that would hurt. “They taste delicious. I added a hint of pumpkin spice. Bitches love pumpkin spice.” She nods her head like it’s a fact that bitches love pumpkin spice. She finishes the cookie, moaning appreciatively. It gives a whole new meaning to ‘swallowing’ here at Red’s Goodie Basket.

“Do bitches like biting the heads off dicks too?”

Gwen scrunches her nose and looks down at the batch of cookies on the prep table. “They don’t look like dicks. They’re broomsticks.” But even as she defends herself, she tilts her head to study them.

“Pubic hair.” I point to what was supposed to be the bristles of a broom, then slide my finger across what I’m guessing should have been the actual broomstick. “The cock.”

She bites her lip, and I can tell she’s trying to find a way to prove me wrong.

“Gwen. If it’s a freaking broomstick, why is it cumming?” The end of the cookie has white icing shooting out of it and clearly looks like cum.

“That’s the magic coming out! It’s a witch’s broomstick!” She says it so earnestly that I’m not sure who she’s trying to convince here, me or herself.

“Yeah, something’s coming out of it all right.”

Suddenly, we both bust out laughing. I should be frustrated, but laughing feels good. It’s something I haven’t done in a while, and I let it out, enjoying the silliness of the situation.

When we finally stop laughing, a worried look crosses her face. “It’s fine.” I try to reassure her. I only opened the bakery a little over a week ago, and I’m sure she thinks I might fire her. What she doesn’t know is, she’s the only person who applied for the job. For some reason I had a hard time transitioning to this quiet little town in Gray Ridge, Colorado.

If it wasn’t for the tourists who pass through, I wouldn’t have any business at all. Lucky for me there’s a national park nearby that keeps my little shop busy. I’m just not sure how long it will last once the snow starts hitting the mountains and the line of tourists slows down. I was told some of the roads get shut down around here after the first snow. Maybe by then the people who live here will start to warm to me. Otherwise it’s going to be a tight few months, and I’ll have to pull more from my savings. As the holidays are fast approaching, I’m hopeful everyone will need desserts.

It’s coming close to the end of October, and I thought some festive Halloween treats would be a good idea. When I mentioned it to Gwen, she jumped all over it, wanting to make them herself. She always seems to want to stay here as much as she can. I had a pile of paperwork to cover last night, so I gave her a shot at the cookies on her own. I went upstairs to my little apartment/office over the bakery and left her to it. This morning I’m seeing the error of my ways.

When I hired her, I knew she didn’t have any experience, but she seemed eager to learn. Whenever I made stuff, she watched my every move, absorbing all the information she could. I had gone to culinary school and was more than happy to teach her all my tricks. It’s been nice having someone to talk to who shares my interests, but she still has a long way to go when it comes to culinary crafts.

“Okay, we don’t have to serve these. What else did you make?”

Gwen makes her way over to the cooler, pulling out more cookies. She walks back over to me, putting down a huge tray of orange pumpkin cookies that read ‘EAT ME’ in giant black lettering.

“Why ‘eat me’?” I ask, looking at the perfectly made pumpkins. Perfect other than the message, of course.

“It’s subliminal messaging to the customers.” She nods her head like she’s been working in advertising and knows this is a selling secret. “People will just have to buy the cookies and eat them because the cookie told them to.”

“Anything else?” I cross my fingers behind my back, praying we might have something we’ll be able to sell today. Now I’m not so sure if I want us to be busy today. I need to whip up some usable cookies and Halloween treats on top of the normal stuff I sell. That would keep me in the back all day with Gwen running the counter by herself.

“I did some cupcakes too.” She bounces back over to the cooler, her excitement clear. Two seconds later she comes strolling out carrying a tray of cupcakes all iced in green, black, white, and orange. The only problem is there seem to be more cocks sticking out of the top of them.

“What is this?” I point to what clearly looks like a dick on top of a cupcake. Not that I’ve ever had experience with a real one, but I do have a Tumblr account.

“Those are fingers. Don’t they look creepy-cool?” I can tell she’s excited about this. I even fear she stayed extra late last night making them. Her face has a giant smile pasted across it, and I can’t seem to bring myself to pop her bubble.

“They’re great, Gwen.” I grab one of the trays, going to load it into one of the cases up front. I plot where I can put them, thinking maybe I can hide them behind a giant stack of Rice Krispie treats and some cakes or something. I could put them on the bottom row, but kids would be at eye level with them then. I guess I’ll have to put them on the top, and I cringe inwardly.

This is not going to win me any favors with the locals who already avoid me. They don’t seem too happy that I’ve taken over the town bakery. It’s the only reason I have as to why so many turn and walk the other way when they see me. I haven’t been in this town long enough to make anyone mad. You’d think I came and stole the bakery or something the way everyone acts. I saw it for sale online and made an offer, and if they didn’t like new people, maybe they shouldn’t have put an online listing for the world to see!

The site even showed you the paperwork of how successful the previous owner had been and explained that the only reason it was for sale was because the owner passed away, and the remaining family couldn’t run it. But business wasn’t quite so booming now that I was running the place.

When I saw this place I knew it would be perfect for me; a fresh start somewhere new, and I could leave the sad memories behind. After my grandma passed, I was all alone. She raised me after my parents died in a car accident when I was five years old. After high school I’d gone to college, got a degree in business, but couldn’t seem to settle into anything. The only time I ever felt happy was when I went home to my grandma’s and when I was in her kitchen baking. That’s when I knew I had to make baking my life if I wanted to be happy.

My grandma pushed me into culinary school, and sadly it wasn’t long after I graduated that I lost her. After I closed her estate, I knew I wanted to open my own bakery, and I searched for the prime place. When I stumbled across this little town with this perfect little bakery, something about it drew me in. When I stepped inside the first time, I knew this was the place; I felt like I fit. It was almost as if the bakery was waiting for me, like my fate was here.

Pushing through the door from the kitchen to the front, I set the tray on the counter and start making coffee while I set up the display cases. Maybe I’m being too hard on myself; I haven’t been here that long.

Gwen follows behind me, and I see her go to the trays in the window of the store and start placing treats on display there too. Shit.

Maybe when we open I can send her on an errand and throw all of them out while she’s gone. I could tell her they sold like crazy, but then she just might want to make more. Double shit.

Finishing our morning set up, I walk over to the window display and move things around a little. Once everything is set, I flip the sign over from ‘Closed’ to ‘Open’ and unlock the door. I head back behind the counter and watch as people pass by the bakery, making their way to their own shops to open. A few people I don’t recognize come in for a coffee, eyeing the Halloween cookies. I went ahead and put the ‘broomsticks’ out too. Might as well if I’m doing the other ones. If they don’t sell, I can always take them to the nursing home down the road like I always do with my extras. Maybe they wouldn’t notice they looked like little cocks.

“I think I’ll run down to the hardware store later and get some Halloween decorations. Add some festivity to the place. I know some of the kids will be trick or treating up and down the street Saturday for Halloween. Maybe some of them will drag their parents in or something if it looks festive.” I try to sound excited, but Gwen just snorts, making her blonde hair bounce. You’d think I’d be making a killing with her working the front counter considering how hot she is. She eats more of the merchandise than I do, but I’m not sure where her lean body puts it. Mine all goes to my hips and ass.

“Gwen, you were born and raised here, right?” I ask, already knowing the answer. I’ve heard her talk about her brother. She lives with him, and she constantly complains that he doesn’t let her do anything. I actually think her applying for this job was an act of rebellion. After seeing all the Halloween dirty treats she made, I’m starting to think she’s sexually repressed. Not that I can point fingers. I’m a twenty-four-year old virgin, and Gwen’s only three years younger than me. But I wasn’t the one making cock treats.

“Yep, born and raised,” she says, turning and leaning her hip against the counter next to the register.

“Was most everyone around here born and raised here?” The town seems so tightly knit, like there’s this club I can’t seem to break into. It’s like I haven’t performed some secret rite of passage yet or something. Every day I keep hoping something will give; that it’s just a fluke people aren’t coming in yet. Maybe they don’t know the bakery is back open, but I’m starting to think in a town like this everyone knows everything about everyone.

She shrugs her shoulders, and I can see her choosing her words carefully. “Most are from here, but Alp— I mean, my brother, likes to welcome in strays from time to time.”

“They don’t seem too welcoming to me,” I mutter, not wanting to insult her brother. Why would it be his job to do the welcoming? I hadn’t even met the man, and if he’s some kind of welcoming committee for the town, then he sucks at it. I’ve been here for three weeks, and I have no idea who he is.

“Well, it will just take some time.” She leans in a little closer to me, and I hear her sniff.

“Did you just smell me?” Grabbing my shirt, I sniff myself thinking maybe I stink or something, but all I smell is sugar. No matter how many showers I take I think it’s ingrained from cooking sweets all the time.

“No,” she says, stepping back from me like I asked her a crazy question when she’s the one sniffing me.

“You like working here, Gwen?”

“I love it! You’re not going to fire me because I smelled you, are you? I can decorate the shop if you like. Halloween is in a few days, and I’ll get it done today. Or it is the treats? You hate them? I can do them over again. Just show me how you like them. Please, you can’t fire me. No one else will hire me. My brother won’t let them and…and—”

“Gwen. Calm down,” I say, cutting her off from her rapid-fire rambling. “I’m not going to fire you. I…it’s just…like a second ago when I made the suggestion about the decorations, you snorted like, “no one is coming in here,” and, well, if no one comes in here, neither of us will be working here.”

“Oh!” She sighs like it’s no big deal, and I just stare at her, not understanding her at all. “They’ll come after.”

“After?” I wave my hand trying to encourage her to finish her sentence.

She hesitates and then looks around the room. “After Sheriff Wolfe stops scaring people away.” She says the words like I pried them from her using torture.

At hearing his name, my eyes shoot to the front window to see if he’s loitering outside my shop again. I thought cops drove around in their cop cars, eating donuts, but the one here walks up and down Main Street all day, eating my cookies and drinking my coffee. He stops in front of my bakery more than anywhere else and glares in here like I’ve done something to offend him.

It was his family who owned the bakery before I did, but I was told that he wanted to sell it. The lawyers explained that he didn’t have the time to run it, which I could understand if he was the sheriff. And no way could I see him running a bakery. He’d eat himself out of house and home.

The man was a jerk-face. A sexy, giant jerk-face who was my biggest customer, but still a jerk-face, and he could barely form a sentence on the best of days. At first I thought maybe he could only grunt and growl. But then I saw he didn’t have a problem speaking to other people. I’d heard him talk to Gwen a few times and everyone else, but with me it was like I was too much of a bother or something. If he couldn’t stand me, why was he always hanging around all the time? Why did he sell me the shop? It’s not like I twisted his big, hairy, muscled arm or something. In fact, it was the opposite. I remember that day like it was yesterday.

When I came to see the place, I was so excited. I knew before I’d even got here I was making an offer. The pictures online showed me it was everything I wanted. The place was even decorated in my favorite color, red. All I’d have to do was get a new sign.

I was so excited to finally see it in person, but the first time I walked inside all I saw was him. I thought he was sitting at a mini table in the bakery, but it didn’t take me long to realize the table wasn’t mini. No, he just made it look that way because he was so big.

I stood mesmerized by him, my whole body coming alive. It was a feeling I’d never felt before, like warmth washing over me. His big silver eyes grew bigger at the sight of me. But then he stood from the table and stormed out of the bakery. Just before he hit the door, he threw over his shoulder, “It’s hers.” He made it clear he was done with me and the bakery. Or so I thought.

For some reason it knocked the air out of my lungs when he dismissed me so easily. I shouldn’t have been so taken aback by him. I wasn’t one to get noticed by men. I’m short, chubby, and have curly red hair that I can barely control. It’s why my parents named me Ruby. So having him all but ignore me shouldn’t have hurt so much, but it did.

Then I found out he’s the sheriff. I felt like he came in here to poke me, and now I find out he’s keeping people away from the shop too. What’s this? Some scheme he does or something? Sells the bakery, drives the bakery person out of business and buys it back for dirt cheap, then does it all over again to someone new? I can’t even report him because he’s the freaking sheriff.

Maybe that’s it. That day he saw me, he knew I was an easy mark. Well, the next time I see him I’m going to give him my two cents. Really give him something to growl about.

The Dark Ones is a paranormal read from Rachel Van Dyken, and I found myself enjoying it so much! I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from this book after reading the blurb, but this ended up being a pretty great read. The Dark Ones is the first book in The Dark Ones Saga, but it can be read as a complete standalone, which I was super thankful for. RVD includes a ton of different paranormal elements, but not too many that it became overwhelming. So if you’re in the mood to read a PNR, you should definitely give this book a try!

Genesis is a human who’s just been chosen by a Dark One, the leader of immortals, half-human and half-angel. She’s called to serve the immortals, believing that her job will be to teach them about modern technology, but when she arrives, she finds out that what she’s been taught all her life about immortals has been wrong.

“To us, you’re not ugly. You are absolute perfection.”
“To a Dark One,” Mason continued, “you’re life itself.”

After being thrust into the paranormal world, and on the run from the Dark One, Cassius, Genesis befriends a group of immortals with whom she finally find a place to belong. There’s Alex, a male siren, his sister Stephanie, also a siren. There’s the werewolf Mason, who’s actually a vegetarian and loves to cook. And then there’s Ethan, the vampire, who bonds with her in order to save her from Cassius.

Ethan is very reluctant to mate with Genesis, after the tragedy that happened with his previous mate. But since this is the only way to save Genesis, and Genesis is the one human who has the potential to save their world, he begins the painful process of bonding with her. What he doesn’t expect is to actually fall for the human.

She gave me her body.
In return, I gave her my soul.

The romance between Ethan and Genesis had a bit of insta-lust, but not until they became mates, so I was actually okay with that. I liked how protective Ethan was over Genesis, even when he was protecting her from himself. The two of them are so sweet together, and I loved that we get both of their POVs. This book is definitely not a long triangle, so for those who are against them, this is the book for you!

Overall, The Dark Ones was a fun read with a lot of potential as a series-starter. I loved the supporting characters – they made this book a lot more light-hearted than I expected. I’m very much looking forward to the sequel, because of who the hero will be. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, sexy, refreshing PNR, I highly recommend The Dark Ones!

I still tasted her blood on my lips, was embarrassed for the first time in a century when Alex glanced up from his spot at the kitchen table to see me licking my lips like I’d just devoured the poor girl.

He shook his head. “Been that long, huh?”

“Alex…” I closed my eyes and prayed for patience. “…remind me why I let you live here?”

“I’m good-looking,” he answered simply. “Besides, I’m a hell of a fighter — scrappy, I think is how you define my kind. You need me.”

“Stop.” I pressed my fingertips to my temples and rubbed. The ache to have her had consumed me so much that I’d run down the stairs moving so fast I’d nearly collided with a wall, and grabbed blood from the fridge.

I didn’t need it.

But I craved it.

And if I didn’t drink the donated blood, I sure as hell was going to drain her and enjoyed very last drop.

“I wonder” Alex’s voice pierced my thoughts. “What’s it like?” He leaned forward. “Having to learn self-control all over again… being as ancient as you are?”

I ignored him.

He kept talking.

“Blood-free for a century and now…” He grinned and licked his lips. “Kind of like falling off the wagon, yeah?”

“You’re giving me a headache.” I threw the empty bag of blood at his face. He moved to the side and snickered. “And I’m fine. Everything is just—”

Her smell was intoxicating. She was walking down the stairs, so her heart picked up speed, her body giving off a scent of burnt vanilla and oranges with a hint of sugar. My mouth literally watered.

“Fine?” Alex said in a mocking voice. “Was that what you were going to say? Damn, man show a little decorum, you look… starved.”

“I am,” I whispered and fought the urge to rock back and forth. That was the problem with mating — with bonding. Nothing tasted like her, nothing ever would, and typically, having her as my mate gave me full access.

But the more I took…

The stronger the bond.

And the more I wanted…

It was a vicious overwhelming cycle. It would lead me to become emotionally invested while she, as a human, could simply pretend.

It wasn’t fair.

Immortals, in essence, were cursed with a deep desire to be like a human — to possess them, to bond with them forever — while humans only felt the same draw to us if they actually loved us.

Ridiculous.

“Oh, there you are.” Stephanie pushed Genesis forward and pulled out a chair.

Slowly, Genesis took a seat and glared at each one of us. “Where’s Mason?”

It shouldn’t have pissed me off.

But it had.

“He’s none of your concern,” I spat.

“Easy!” Alex chuckled. “Rule number one, don’t ask your mate where the other dude is. Just… don’t.”

Genesis blinked at Alex then back at me. “Because you guys have the capacity for jealousy.”

Alex whistled while Stephanie laughed.

Immortals were the most jealous beings on the planet. Had her school taught her nothing?

Was I to be her tutor as well?

“So…” Alex trained his eyes on her, putting her at as much ease as he could without stopping her poor heart. “Now that the mating is complete, you get to learn all about us and service your man here.” He slapped my back.

Really. Really. Poor choice of words.

Genesis paled.

I rolled my eyes. “He’s kidding.”

Alex laughed. “I think it needs to be said that having a human at the house has already helped my mood immensely.”

“That makes one of you,” Genesis said under her breath.

Alex leaned forward and whispered, “Ethan, try not to be so grouchy. Keep the fangs in and all.”

I extended them just to prove a point.

Genesis recoiled.

I instantly felt guilty.

Damn it.

“You won’t…” I licked my lips. “You won’t have to service me, as Alex so delicately put it.”

“Is that what mates do?” Genesis asked, her eyes searching mine. “They…” She lifted her hands into the air and dropped them.

“If that’s what you think they do, we have a very big problem.” Alex mimicked her movements and winked.

She blushed.

I hissed at him and returned my attention to her. “It’s like a human relationship, only stronger. You’ll attend functions with me, be by my side, at my beck and call for as long as you live.”

I didn’t want to say until one day she just didn’t wake up. It sounded too cruel.

“And when I’m bored out of my mind… I do what?” She crossed her arms. “I mean, what could you possibly need from me?”

“Adorable.” Alex sighed happily. “I’m so glad we kept her.”

“Alex…” I was two seconds away from slamming him into the nearest wall. “Make yourself useful and find our human a snack.”

“I’m not a pet!” Genesis yelled. “And I’m not your human!”

“You are,” I yelled right back, “mine!”

“Kids.” Stephanie stepped between us.

I didn’t even realize I’d gotten out of the chair and was towering over her, fangs out, hands raised. She’d turned me into a monster. And still, my eyes found her erratic pulse. One more taste…

“Ethan—” Stephanie pushed against my chest. I didn’t move. “Ethan!”

“Friend…” Mason walked into the room. “Sit your ass down before she hands it to you.”

“Like she could!” I roared.

“Like I have!” Stephanie pushed me again. “Don’t tempt me… again.”

I sat, while Mason made his way over to Genesis and offered an easy smile. The man had nothing to smile about, yet he was smiling — at my mate.

I growled.

Mason gave me the finger and kept his attention trained on Genesis. “How do you feel?”

“Better.” She returned his smile and squeezed his outstretched hand. “Thanks for not… killing me when I asked.”

“Damn…” Alex said from the kitchen.

“You were in pain.” Mason shrugged. “And I’m glad you’re alright.”

“She’s fine. We’re fine. Everything’s fine,” I said through clenched teeth. “Now it’s probably time to give her answers before she thinks she can run off and actually survive in the real world without being hunted by a Dark One, or worse, found by Cassius.”

“He isn’t all bad,” Stephanie said defensively.

We all glared at her.

“What?” She lifted her hands into the air. “I’m just saying he’s been trying as hard as we have. So what if he’s gotten a bit possessive over the last few numbers that have been called.”

Alex slammed his fist onto the table. “He stole Ethan’s—”

“Enough.” I held up my hand. The pain in my chest grew until it was hard to breathe. I knew what would take that pain away.

Genesis.

But I was too angry to ask for it. Too ashamed to fall to my knees in front of a mere mortal and beg for her to end the pain by allowing me one solitary drop of her blood.

As if on cue, another bag of blood hit me in the head.

Alex must have sensed my mood.

I bit into it and looked away from Genesis’s horrified expression.
