Holy hell!! This book was one crazy hell of a ride! I’m not even completely sure how I feel about The Paper Swan, but what I do know is that I couldn’t. put. it. down. This is the first book I’ve read by Leylah Attar, and now that I’m a bit in love with the way she writes, this book won’t be my last of hers. I won’t say too much about the plot of this book, since the twists and turns are the best part of it, but I just really enjoyed this book. I wouldn’t say it’s THE BEST book I’ve read, but it’s a dark, gritty, entertaining book I devoured in one sitting.

“You can either choose love or you can choose hate, because where one lives, the other will die.”

I was completely taken aback with the beginning of the book. Leylah Attar definitely doesn’t hold back – instead, she thrusts the reader right into the midst of the story, making your heart pound as you read more and more. Skye Sedgewick finds herself held at gunpoint by a strange man. Curiously, he doesn’t kill her, but instead kidnaps her and holds her hostage on a boat. Damian, the abductor, is cruel, cold, and violent, but he also has… kinder moments. I didn’t like him… but I didn’t quite hate him either. I was waiting to see what his reasons were and how the story would unfold before I made my judgements on him, and WOW was I surprised at what was revealed.

The two men that I loved the most, with all my heart, were out to destroy each other. I had a feeling that by the time it was all said and done, only one would be left standing.

Interspersed between the moments that Skye is desperately trying to find a way to escape are flashbacks that tell of Skye’s early childhood, when she lived in Mexico with her father, nanny, and beloved childhood friend Esteban. I LOVED the way the the author integrated the past with the present. The story flowed so well and unfolded in such a smooth, lyrical way. The writing was good, though I wasn’t that big of a fan of it. I can see how people would love the writing, but to me, it sometimes felt like too much – too poetic and flowery. I much rather enjoyed the actual organization of the book.

So what does Damian want with Skye? Who exactly is he? Thankfully, Leylah Attar doesn’t hold us in suspense for too long, because by 25%, we get some answers and I could see which way the author was taking the story. The blurb says that this book is NOT a love triangle, and I would have to agree. Damian is the only love interest, though it took a long time for me to even warm up to him being a love interest at all. In the end, I couldn’t forgive the things he did to Skye, though he does change and emotions surface once secrets are out in the open. Damian really said the sweetest things, but it was hard for me to reconcile his sweeter side with the cruel side he showed in the beginning. So while I can’t say I loved him, I did enjoy the way he and Skye were together.

“Whether you say yes or no, you will always be my forever.”

The Paper Swan is a fantastic kidnapper romance, because it’s so much more than that. Yes, Skye falls for her kidnapper, but her captivity is also a journey of self-discovery with revealed secrets. This book is also very much Damian’s story, with his quest in revenge, vengeance, and redemption. There’s no doubt this book is intense, and I loved the amount of depth the author put into the characters and story. I highly recommend this book for those who like their books gritty and suspenseful.

You don’t always get the treasure by holding on. Sometimes the magic happens when you let go.

ARC Review + Paperback Giveaway: Toxic by Kim Karr

Toxic by Kim Karr

Toxic by Kim Karr
Series: Standalone
Publication Date: July 7th 2015
Links: EbookPaperback • Goodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

New York Times bestselling author Kim Karr turns up the heat in a smoking hot, emotionally compelling romance that takes you into the world of Manhattan’s elite. Meet Jeremy McQueen, a sexy, intense, brooding entrepreneur who goes after what he wants, and Phoebe St. Claire, a socialite-turned-CEO who’s been drifting through life searching for something she thought she’d never find again–the right man to share her future.

Phoebe St. Claire has devoted herself to saving her family’s hotel empire–but her best efforts have not been good enough. With her whole world in turmoil, the tenacious go-getter turns to the once love of her life. Far from innocent, Jeremy McQueen was the guy from the wrong side of the tracks who her parents would never have approved of. Their years apart have only made the sexy bad boy more irresistible than ever–and their reunion is explosive.

When she asks Jeremy to help her salvage her family business, he agrees immediately, with only one condition–he wants her in his bed.

But soon surprising circumstances leave Phoebe reeling. Was this fairy tale romance just too good to be true? Will Jeremy’s secrets pull them apart all over again?

I adore second chance romances, so Toxic was right up my alley. I was expecting Toxic to be an angsty but sweet romance about two people reconnecting, but it was surprisingly so much more than that. Kim Karr tells an excellent story about both the highs and lows of a relationship, and yes, the toxic parts of it, too. Kim Karr really nails the second chance romance aspect of the story as well – I was rooting for Phoebe and Jeremy to get their much deserved HEA.

Through everything, all the heartache, the loneliness, the sadness and sorrow, the one thing I never regretted was meeting him.
Him.
Jeremy McQueen.
He wasn’t just any boy–he was “the boy.” The one I never should have met, and the one I’d never trade meeting for the world.

Five years ago, Phoebe and Jeremy were very much in love, despite being complete opposites. Phoebe was the rich, high society girl while Jeremy was the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Phoebe, however, keeps the fact that she comes from a wealthy family a secret from Jeremy so that he won’t turn away from her. In the flashback scenes, I could easily feel the connection Phoebe and Jeremy had all those years ago. They formed a sweet romance that unfortunately didn’t last after the lies and misunderstandings.

I’d loved him once, even though I never told him I did. And as I looked at him, everything I’d ever felt for him came rushing back.

Now, just as Phoebe is in the midst of saving her family’s hotel empire, Jeremy comes back into her life, but now this bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks is a successful, wealthy businessman. Phoebe never truly got over her lost love, and it seems like neither did Jeremy. The connection they had five years ago is still going strong, if not stronger once they reunite. I loved how passionate Phoebe and Jeremy are together – they want each other like no other and the chemistry between them is explosive. They bring out the best each other, but they also bring out the worst. They both have to deal with their jealousy, self-doubts, and past mistrusts before they can ever truly move on and be in a relationship again.

Normally, I wouldn’t have enjoyed a book like Toxic – there’s a whole mess of misunderstandings and miscommunications, which made for a toxic relationship. But somehow, it worked for Phoebe and Jeremy. The misunderstandings and miscommunications weren’t gratuitous – they were very real issues that both Jeremy and Phoebe have to overcome. These characters have a history of distrust and uncertainty in their relationship, and throughout the course of their reconnected love, they find a way to get past these issues to form a stronger relationship.

“You know things won’t be the same as they were. They can’t be. Too much has happened.”
He sighed what sounded like relief. “I know. They’ll be better this time.”
“What if they’re not?”
“It’s not possible.”
“How do you know that?”
“I just do. I can feel it.”

There are lots of twists and turns in Toxic, which had me on the edge of my seat. I really couldn’t put this book down. The best part about this is the intense chemistry between Phoebe and Jeremy – their past relationship really heightens their connection and made me want them to get their HEA. The love between them comes so clearly off the pages, which did sometimes make me feel frustrated when the misunderstandings and miscommunications started up. These were two people who are clearly meant to be together, but the journey to their HEA is not an easy one. I definitely recommend this book to those who like sexy, angsty romances with a little twist to it.

HO-LEE. SHIT. WOW!!!!! What. A. Read!

“Gene mutations I can tell you about, Belén. But love, that is the universe’s greatest mystery.”

First off, I’d never read a book by Mara White before – but now I’m thinking I should. The way she writes is just so captivating and addicting… I was hooked onto Maldeamores from the beginning. The taboo subject of the book isn’t for everyone: it’s about cousins who fall in love. I took a chance on this book because I LOVE forbidden/taboo love stories, and this one was calling to me. I wasn’t uncomfortable with the topic (first cousins can marry in many places, after all), but Maldeamores still held enough taboo to make my heart race. If you’re unsure about this book, I say GO FOR IT!!! The writing is spectacular, and it’s the kind of story that sweeps you away and emotionally exhausts you – I freaking loved it!

“I think that nobody can help who they love. That shit just happens and you’ve got to figure out how to deal with it. I don’t believe it’s a choice. Ever.”

Belén and “Lucky” Luciano have been inseparable since they were born – they’re cousins who grew up together, but somewhere along the way, their familial love turned into something more. I loved that we get to see Belén and Lucky in their younger years, how they grew up together and how they started falling for each other. Both knew it was something wrong – forbidden – but… you can’t help who you love. I never felt like what they did – falling in love – was wrong. It was just so right between them. The author wrote their characters in such a way that I was able to see how clearly they belonged together, no matter what their families or society think. The connection between them was as pure and passionate as it was gut-wrenching and emotional. Nothing is easy for their relationship, not that they have much of one in the beginning. As much as Lucky loves Belén, he doesn’t see himself as worthy of her, so he stays away from her, not letting himself fall into temptation. But when temptation strikes… the passionate scenes between them are so erotic and sensual, but of love and heartbreak. This book has SO MANY FEELS it was almost hard for me to keep track what I was feeling. Bottom line, though, I was seriously invested in Belén and Lucky’s love story.

“Loving you, Bey, should not be something that’s hidden from the world. Your love should be a privilege, not a dirty secret. I want you to have a happy life, one that you’re proud of.”

Now I have to talk about the writing!!! Oh my god, Mara White’s writing is seriously gorgeous. The writing SUCKED me into the story and never let me go. It’s beautiful, sensual, emotional – it’s the kind of writing that makes you keep on reading. Even when the characters had me feeling distraught, I couldn’t put this book down. I became addicted to the writing and story, to the ups and downs of Belén and Lucky’s epic love. The LOVE between them just shines so clearly off the pages and in each and every word of this book.

But why am I only giving this four hearts? Well… I loved everything – except for the ending. I almost want to pretend the epilogue never happened. I’m not saying it’s a BAD ending – it just wasn’t the ending I wanted. I won’t say whether there’s a HEA or not, but I just have to say that while I can understand why the author chose to end it that way, I really REALLY wish it ended differently. It didn’t ruin the book for me, but it DID affect the way I perceived the book after I finished, and I just couldn’t give this book five hearts.

Maldeamores seriously fucked me up – in the best possible way. I don’t regret reading it (excerpt maybe for the epilogue), despite the emotional roller coaster this book put me on. The writing is flawless and the characters are the kind of messed up that I love to read about. One word to describe this book? Unputdownable. I’m so impressed with how this book was able to wring so many emotions out of me, but what I loved the most was the beautiful love story Mara White wove between Belén and Lucky. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

Review: Off Base by Tessa Bailey & Sophie Jordan

Off Base by Tessa Bailey & Sophie Jordan

Off Base by Tessa Bailey & Sophie Jordan

OFF BASE: Kenna and Beck
By Tessa Bailey

A welcome home he never expected…and will never forget…

When Kenna Sutton is tasked with driving home newly returned Beck “True Blue” Collier, she expects the strategic Army mastermind to be a pasty number cruncher. Never at a loss for words, Kenna is nonetheless rendered speechless by the gorgeous, inexperienced and tightly-wound Army major that lands in her passenger seat. Outraged by Beck’s lack of a welcome home after seven long years overseas, Kenna takes matters into her own hands, giving Beck something he’s only ever fantasized about in his bunk.

Beck has never shied away from a test of will and Kenna gives new meaning to the word challenge. One problem? Kenna’s father is the lieutenant general presenting Beck with the Silver Star and Beck is determined to treat Kenna with the respect she deserves, even if her eyes beg Beck to act out his most secret desires with her. Desires he’s always been told were the work of the devil. But how long can one lonely, starving man hope to resist the woman he craves?

OFF BASE: Huntley and Cullen
By Sophie Jordan

Being a good girl has its drawbacks…

Huntley Collier, an emergency room nurse and all-around do-gooder, is tired of living in the friend zone. Cullen Brooks was given the job of babysitting Huntley when her brother – his best friend – deployed. But their friendly coffeehouse hangouts and TV marathons leave her wanting more. When one crazy night leads to too many drinks and an explosion of long-denied lust, Huntley’s dreams become a reality. And reality is one hot, wild place she never wants to leave.

But only a good girl can bring down a bad boy…

Known as Sullen Cullen around Black Rock, Cullen Brooks doesn’t have many friends, but Huntley is one of them … and despite his decidedly unfriendly fantasies of the curvy blonde, she is far too sweet for his darker tastes. Keeping his hands off is easier said than done, however, when demure, little Huntley responds to his touch like the wildcat he never expected…and can’t stop pursuing, despite his better judgment. But when Cullen suddenly faces losing her, will this bad boy risk it all to keep his good girl?

I’ve been SO excited for this release ever since I heard about it!! I’m such a HUGE fan of Tessa Bailey’s and I’ll read anything and everything she writes, so of course I had to get my hands on this one! I’d never read a book by Sophie Jordan before, but I was looking forward to read her story in Off Base as well. This new collab release features two novellas from both authors about two hot, sexy military men and the awesome women they fall for and love. And what makes this even better is that a) Tessa Bailey writes about a virgin. hero. and b) Sophie Jordan writes about the older brother’s best friend trope (one of my favorites)!

So that whole virgin hero thing? I’m still fanning myself after reading Tessa’s novella hours ago. Hot damn, can this woman write a virgin hero! I need her to write more virgin heroes! ESPECIALLY ones like Beck, who says things like this…

“I already know you’re going to be the best of my life, Kenna. How do I make sure I’m the best of yours? Tell me.

Arriving back six years after he was deployed, Major Beck Collier never expected to have a gorgeous woman as Kenna Sutton driving him home. And while Kenna was expecting to be driving some awkward, geeky nerd, she’s utterly shocked that Beck is a sexy, delicious hunk of a man. The two are incredibly attracted to each other from the start – I freaking loved the chemistry between Kenna and Beck! Tessa Bailey writes chemistry between her characters so well that it’s nearly palpable. Kenna learns that Beck is a virgin, one thing leads to another, and this virgin hero is utterly deflowered. And it. is. HOT!!!!! Seriously, get your fans ready, because Beck will knock your socks (and panties) off!

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you’d done this before. A lot.”
“Nah, darlin’. Just you.” He took the single key she offered, turning it in the lock. “You make everything I do feel right. That has nothing to do with experience.”

I adored Beck and Kenna’s story. Kenna was a little frustrating, as she’s very anti-relationship, but I loved the way Beck fought for her and for them. The two of them share a spark they’ve never felt with another, and it was so much fun reading about Beck making Kenna see that the two of them were meant to be together.

Sophie Jordan’s heroine is Huntley Collier, Beck’s little sister. Beck’s best friend Cullen has been looking out for her ever since Beck was deployed, but the time together in Black Rock has made them close friends. What they hide from each other is how desperately they want each other… but when they give in to desire one night, have they wrecked their friendship forever?

Cullen is not a relationship kind of guy, but Huntley is different. She’s one of his closest friends and he knows he doesn’t deserve her, but he can’t stop wanting or needing her. Cullen goes back and forth between taking Huntley and pushing her away, which may have annoyed me more if there wasn’t some hot, dirty sexytimes to make up for it. The older brother’s best friend/best friend’s younger sister is one of my favorite tropes, and Sophie Jordan did a great job in finding the right balance between angst and romance for Cullen and Huntley’s story.

“I love you. I always have. I just didn’t know. You’re in my blood, Huntley. If you go, I’m lost.”

Off Base is one sexy, dirty read that fans of military romances don’t want to miss! Be aware that both these are novellas and not full-length novels. Though I totally wouldn’t say no to more about these characters! I had such a fun (HOT) time reading Off Base. If you like your alpha heroes with a little side of dirty, this is for you!

I’d never read any of J.J. McAvoy’s books before, but when I read the blurb for Black Rainbow, I had to get my hands on it! I’m a sucker for a good forbidden love story, and this one seemed amazing – a one-week fling with a man who turns out to be her law professor!? Yes, please! Black Rainbow was a fun, sexy read, and while I really enjoyed it, I had a few problems with it as well. Still, if you’re looking for a fast-paced, exciting, HOT read with a little suspense mixed in, this is for you!

“You are not a black rainbow. I see every one of your colors. You may have been one once, but you sure as hell aren’t one now.”

I really liked Thea and Levi together – they have an insanely hot chemistry together, which worked out well when they wanted to have a one-week, no-strings-attached fling. It’s during this week that we see the potential Thea and Levi have toward becoming an actual couple. They’re so sweet and funny, and their teasing and banter had me grinning a lot. We see them grow to care for each other over the week, these two people who usually have their hearts guarded. But when the week is over, they have to go back to their lives – without each other. What they never expected was to see each other again, but in a classroom setting.

Levi Black turns out to be Professor Black – as in, Thea’s professor. He’s also one of the top criminal lawyers in the state, his ruthlessness and expertise nicknaming him ‘El Diablo’. Thea, though, won’t be dropping his class just because they slept together for a week. She needs to learn how to be the best lawyer she can be in order to get her father out of prison, and the only way she can do that is the stay in Levi’s class.

I was really looking forward to the ‘forbidden romance’ aspect of the story. Black Rainbow is a teacher/student romance – I was able to really feel the romance part, but the forbidden aspect was a little lacking. Like I said before, Thea and Levi are absolutely great together, but I never really felt like there would be any consequences for them if they ever got caught. I was never anxious for them, which I’m a little sad about, because that’s the best part of a forbidden love story, for me anyway. Still, the romance was sweet and heartwarming. I loved how Levi was so caring and tender with Thea, and I loved how hard he worked to claim Thea’s heart.

“When will you get it? I don’t just want you at my side, I need you.”
I love you.

One thing that really grated on me, though, was that Levi never seemed to act his age, which was thirteen years older than Thea. Some things were just a liiitle bit unbelievable at times, especially with things regarding Thea’s father’s case, but it wasn’t that big of a deal so I was able to let it go. I was really able to enjoy the story more when the main thing I focused on was the romance. Black Rainbow was a quick, fun, sexy read, and though I didn’t love everything about it, I still had a great time reading it. I’m looking forward to reading the author’s other books!

“Oh please, don’t say sorry, this is embarrassing enough as it is. So much for me trying to be sexy,” I sighed.

He paused for a moment looking up at me like I was crazy— “I came into the bathroom to find you standing under my shower, wet, naked, and beautiful. Then, I got to carry you out of the shower like a man, and now, you’re sitting on my bed, dripping wet, with nothing around you but a towel. The only thing that could make this sexier is this,” he said as he reached up and pulled off my shower cap.

Goddamn it! I forgot I had it on. Why, God? Why?!

“You’re sexy without even trying,” he said, as he planted a light kiss on my kneecap, “now stop ruining this for me.”

I remained silent, allowing him to finish bandaging me up. At least I had finished ninety percent of shaving my legs before I got hurt.

“I’ll finish breakfast, while you get ready,” he said, as he stood back from me.

“Reaching up, I grabbed the edge of his shirt, and as I sat up on to the bed, I allowed the towel to fall. He swallowed, his eyes fixated on every inch of me.
