Author Interview: P.T. Michelle

As a writer, how do you come up with your ideas for stories?

PT: Writers by nature are very observant people. We absorb what we see, hear, smell and touch everyday, so everything inspires us from movies to music to people. One thing that has always inspired when forming a new story idea is I always ask myself the question, “What if….” and then I fill in the blank. 🙂

A story about a girl dreaming her entire next day (and ONLY her next day) the night before is unusual. How did you come up with the concept for BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS?

PT: The idea behind the BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS series started off as one of those “What if” questions. I ask myself, “What if a girl dreamed her entire next day?” Then I think through all the possible scenarios: How would that impact her? Would she act upon what she saw? And if not, why? What if she didn’t have a choice? And from there…the story starts flowing.

DESTINY is the 3rd book in the BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS series. Did you know how many books it would be when you first wrote BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS?

PT: I didn’t know how many books the series would be, but I definitely knew the story was far bigger than just a couple of books. I’m what you call a hybrid-pantser writer. A pantser is someone who sits down and just writes…no planning, no plotting involved. The story just flows out. My stories are intricately weaved, so I have to do a bit of planning before I start writing. I write a very high-level outline and give myself TONS of permission to veer off course as the story unfolds while I write. But at least the outline keeps me reminded of what my goals were for the story.  When you have mystery elements like I do in the BKoD series, knowing where you’re going is pretty important. 🙂 So as the stories have unfolded, they took on a life of their own. And then I’ve had to plan each book as I go and also dovetail back into the previous books I’ve written in the series.

Ravens feature dominantly in the BKoD series, which is definitely different from vampires, werewolves and the like we’ve seen in a lot of popular paranormal books. What made you choose to write about ravens?

PT: I’ve always been fascinated by ravens. The lore about them is so interesting. Ravens have been on many of my previous book covers and are mentioned in passing or are part of the storyline in past books. They just weren’t the main storyline. In BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS, ravens finally take front and center. 🙂

How many books do you plan for the BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS series?

PT: Right now the plan is four books. Depending on how the last book unfolds, there may be a spin off. I’m leaving the possibilities open. 🙂

BKoD is listed as a YA series, but DESTINY could definitely fall into the New Adult category. Tell us more about that; give us the scoop on the smexy stuff. 🙂

PT: My goal in writing the BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS series was to write a series that both upper teens and adults would enjoy equally. I’ve written the stories in the series based on Nara and Ethan’s age and the progression of their relationship as it deepens. That’s the reason things heat up as me move from book 1 to book 2 and then on to book 3.

Any thing else you’d like to add?

PT: I just wanted to shout out a huge THANK YOU the readers and bloggers who’ve supported the BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS series from the beginning!

excerpt

Guilt makes my hands shake, so I press them to the car’s window to hold them steady and bow my head. “This is just so hard. I’m trying to be understanding.”

Ethan’s warm hands cover mine, and he whispers in my ear, “It drives me nuts to see you with another guy, even if it’s just something as simple as riding together to play soccer. I know exactly what he’s thinking. I know, because I can’t help but want you more when I see you all sweaty and running your heart out.” He pauses to press his lips to my throat, murmuring, “Mmmm, salty and sweet.”

Tilting my head, I give him access to my neck. I absorb the feel of his hard frame behind me, holding me up and supporting me, even for a few seconds. This isn’t full on intimacy. At least I tell myself that as my body yields to his.

“I miss touching you so much.” His lips slide up my throat and his fingers fold tight around mine, locking our left hands against the cold glass. I swallow hard, my heart hammering when his other hand falls to my hip to press me closer.

Running hard has intensified Ethan’s appealing smell. Or maybe it’s hearing him say how much it bothers him to see me with someone else that amps my attraction. All I know is…I don’t notice the cold air or the thin layer of snow beneath our feet. His heat and intensity seduce me, making me want him so much my insides quiver and my nerves tingle with excitement.

I press my free hand to his jaw, enjoying the feel of his five o’clock shadow against my fingers. Ethan whispers my name and slides his hand up my shirt. My muscles flex as his fingertips trace slowly along my belly until they come to rest over my thrumming heart, and his thumb slides under my bra clasp. Skin to skin. Warmth melding into warmth. “My heart,” he rasps before kissing my jaw and pressing his fingers closer, locking me against him.

Snippets!!

★ It’s a teaser for Until You (Fall Away #1.5) from Penelope Douglas’ Facebook!

I’m bored. Here’s a teaser.

You remember when Jared went back in the house to get his keys to take Tate to Homecoming? Yeah, here’s the convo between him and his mom.

“Alright, but I do have something to say, and you’re not going to like it.” She kept her eyes fixed on her task of fixing my tie and steadied her voice with a firm tone. “Honey, I couldn’t be happier that you and Tate found your way back to each other—“

Oh, Christ.

I started to turn away, but she twisted me back to face her. This definitely sounded like something I didn’t want to talk about!

“But!” she said loudly, probably to get my attention, “baby mommas don’t usually marry baby daddies.” Every word was bit out like I was too stupid to understand.

I cocked my head to the side and looked down at her, indulging this need of hers to make a point I already understood.

Don’t get Tate pregnant. Yeah, thanks. I got it!

“You’ve been over there almost every night—well, every night, actually—and if you make me a thirty-six year old grandmother, I’m going to kill you.”

She was joking.

I think.

★ City of Heavenly Fire snippet from Cassandra Clare’s tumblr!

Alec pulled his knees up to his chest and looked thoughtfully at Jace. “I know,” he said. “I’m not jealous. I always knew, from the first, that everyone thought you were better than me. My dad thought it. The Clave thought it. Izzy and Max looked up to you as the great warrior they wanted to be like. But the day you asked me to be your parabatai, I knew you meant that you trusted me enough to ask me to help you. You were telling me that you weren’t this lone and self-sufficient warrior able to do everything alone. You needed me. So I realized that there was one person who didn’t assume you were better than me. You.”

A matter of secrets…

Undercover cop Logan “Kash” Ryan can’t afford a distraction like his new neighbor Rachel Masters, even if she’s the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen. To catch a serial killer, he needs to stay focused, yet all he can think about is the feisty, long-legged coed whose guarded nature intrigues him.

A matter of lies…

Deceived and hurt before, Rachel would rather be a single, crazy cat lady than trust another guy, especially a gorgeous, tattooed bad boy with a Harley, like Kash. But when his liquid-steel eyes meet hers, it takes all of Rachel’s will-power to stop herself from exploring his hot body with her own.

A matter of love…

As much as they try to keep it platonic, the friction between them sparks an irresistible heat that soon consumes them. Can Kash keep Rachel’s heart and her life safe even as he risks his own? Will she be able to forgive his lies … or will she run when she discovers the dangerous truth?

I really had no idea there was going to be so much action and suspense in this book! All I saw was that the hero is an undercover cop (men in uniform are divine) and some angsty love goes on between him and his neighbor. It seemed like my type of book, and I enjoyed it! This is the first book from Molly McAdams I’ve read (I’ve been meaning to read her other books as well), and although I didn’t love this book, I was fairly impressed with the suspense, story, and characters.

Forgiving Lies is the first book of Molly McAdams’ new series, and introduces us to Rachel and Kash. The story is told from both of their POVs, which was definitely a plus for me. I always enjoy books that are told in the hero and heroine’s POVs. I loved being inside Rachel’s head, reading what she was thinking of Kash, and then moving on to Kash’s head, and what he thought of Rachel. The beginning stages of their relationship are so adorable, as they learn about one another, get to know each other better. They have an intense attraction to one another, but they only become friends at first. They grow to care for another, and Kash totally melted my heart with how much he wanted to protect Rachel.

Rachel is a college girl who reluctantly started dating her best friend’s cousin, Blake, in college, but it turns out that Blake… is not a nice guy. I don’t want to include spoilers, but basically, Blake is a vile person, and Rachel becomes terrified of him. So she leaves Blake and tries to protect herself from the pain she went through. And in comes Kash, the hot, tattooed, and pierced bad boy neighbor.

Kash is an undercover cop, disguised as Logan “Kash” Hendricks rather than Logan “Kash” Ryan. He’s been assigned to catch a serial killer, and obviously, can’t let Rachel know who he is and what he really does for a living. Kash is drawn to Rachel, because she’s tough and stubborn and has a hard wall around her heart. He slowly gets to know Rachel better, and breaks down those walls bit by bit. Tensions are high, and their romance is sweet and slow and very realistic (even though Kash is an undercover cop ;)).

I had no idea I was in for such a treat with the amount of suspense that builds up throughout the book! While Kash and Rachel are falling in love, behind the scenes, there’s a serial killer on the loose. Blake is also back in Rachel’s life, and not for the better. Molly McAdams builds up the suspense incredibly well, so well that I didn’t know what was going to happen next. And the climax of all the suspense! SO exciting and crazy to read. It’s intense and gripping and heart-pounding, and it was honestly my favorite part of the book! Molly McAdams should definitely venture more into romantic suspense.

Overall, I really did like this book. There were some frustrations with Rachel where she just couldn’t tell people what happened to her. But my frustrations weren’t too bad, and Kash is such a sweetheart that he totally made Rachel less frustrating. If you like your romances with action and suspense, read this book! But I’m sure any romance lover can enjoy Forgiving Lies.

The first day of college gives every girl a chance to reinvent herself.

I go and screw mine up by meeting the most gorgeous guy I’ve seen in five years while talking to my cat.

But Andrew Crowner is far from judgmental. By the end of our interaction, he has me smitten by his easy manner and kind smile. And from the way his eyes linger on me before he leaves, I start to think that maybe I’ve caught his attention, too.

I let myself believe that luck may finally be on my side. That is, until I stumble on my roommate, and her overnight guest: Spencer Ashford.

Lean, tattooed, and sexy as sin, Spencer is exactly the type I need to avoid. I would have no trouble with that… were it not for his swift and inexplicable interest in me.

Suddenly, I go from a girl with next-to-no experience with boys to one caught in the crosshairs of two completely different men.

Andrew’s interest is wholesome and sweet. Spencer’s is edgy and raw. My choice should be easy. But there are always complications, and sometimes, matters of the heart take the least expected turns.

about the author

Scarlett EdwardsI’m Scarlett Edwards.  I wrote my first book as a college sophomore.  After six months of edits, it made its debut as Yours to Savor.

That was at the start of 2013.  I’ve written more books since then.  You can find them all here.

It’s funny how quickly life changes.  I used to think I’d need a degree to get a “Real Job.”  Then I wrote a few books, they got somewhat popular, and now I’m living the life as a full-time romance author.

Thanks to all my readers for making my dream come true.
