Welcome to today’s stop on the blog tour for Searching for Beautiful by Jennifer Probst! We have Jennifer here today with a scene from the book!

Here’s a quick taste of my first scene in Searching for Beautiful!

“Holy shit.”

He stared in shock at the sight before him.

The bride lay in a tangle of limbs, sprawled out on the pavement. The white cloud of lace and dozens of pearly jewels floated around her in a swarm of glory. His heart stopped, stuttered, and kicked back into gear. Jesus, she was gorgeous. Gen had always been an attractive female by all standards, but now she looked as delicate as a doll perched on a wedding cake. She must’ve ripped off her veil because her elaborate twist hairdo lay drunkenly to the side with pins sticking out. The humidity kicked her curls into gear, and already they were springing wild, refusing to be tamed. Snapping blue eyes glared at him, framed in black liner and some sparkly shadow. She never wore makeup. But today, those stunning navy eyes dominated her heart-shaped face with a sultry, sexy air he rarely spotted from her. Four-inch stiletto diamond-encrusted heels stuck out from her balloon hoop gown. Wolfe caught the flash of white lace garters and curved, muscled legs before she flipped the skirt back down and huffed out a breath. “Are you smoking on my damn wedding day? You told me you quit. Julietta’s going to kill you.”

He fought past his lack of speech and wondered if this was a hallucination. “Not if you don’t tell her.”

She sniffed. “You wish. I don’t want you to die of lung cancer. Don’t just stand there gaping. Help me up, I can barely move in this thing.”

And then she was just Gen again. His best friend, a general pain in the ass, and the most precious person in the world to him.

Wolfe moved fast and pulled her up. “Are you okay? Did you fall out the window?”

She rebalanced herself on those ridiculous heels and waved her hand in the air. “Yeah, I’m fine. My hips got stuck but I managed.”

She dusted off her pristine white dress as if jumping out of church windows were a normal occurrence. Damn, she was a hell of a woman. “Umm, babe? Are you pulling a runaway bride thing? Or did you just want to confirm the fire exit worked?”

Her ballsy humor faded from her face. She tilted her chin up, and her lower lip trembled. “I’m in trouble. Will you help me?”

He kept his face calm even though his palms sweat. Something bad had happened, but right now she needed his head in the game. “We ditching the groom?”

“Yeah.”

Wolfe decided to play it like a big adventure. “Cool. I got you covered. Lose the shoes.”

She kicked off the killer stilettos. “Are there reporters out there?”

“No worries, this is a piece of cake. But we gotta move now. Take my hand.”

She placed her small hand in his and squeezed. Wolfe swore that even if he had to fight the whole Taliban, he was getting her out of here and to someplace safe. Discussion was for later. “My car is parked down the street so we’re good. Follow me.”

He led her down the back steps, behind the rectory, and maneuvered through a perfectly formed line of flowering bushes. She paused in flight, wincing at the chips of mulch and gravel. “Ouch.”

“You’re such a girl. Here, you’re going too slow.” Wolfe heaved her up into his arms in a tumble of satin and lace and cut through some weeping willow trees.

“I can’t believe you parked so far away. That means you were late. Some best friend you are.”

“Be glad I was late. I’m saving your ass now.”

She gave a humph. He walked faster, sensing chaos and a complete breakdown not too far behind. If he didn’t get her out in time and anyone caught them leaving, it would be a virtual shitstorm. He ducked under a low-hanging branch, tracked through the backyard of a Cape Cod behind the church, and took a hard right. She stayed silent, and Wolfe bet he had two minutes before her crazy impulsive decision hit her and she said she’d go back.

But if something made her run, it was too important to ignore. The hell he’d take her back.

Finally, he spotted his black Mercedes convertible. He fished the keys out of his pocket, hit the alarm, and opened the door. “In.”

Another lower lip tremble. “Wolfe, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe I should go back.”

“Do you want to marry him, Gen? Deep down, in your gut, where it counts?”

Her teeth sank into her lower lip. Shame and fear and humiliation etched out the lines of her face. Her voice broke on the word “No.”

He nodded and calmly pushed her in the seat.

“Then you’re doing the right thing and we’ll work it out. I promise.”

She swallowed. Returned his nod. And slid into the car.

Wolfe wasted no time. He revved the engine and did a three-point turn, going out the back way and speeding away from the church like it was a devil’s sanctuary and their souls were at risk.

When they hit the open road and no one seemed to be following, he glanced over. She slumped in the seat, her hair hanging halfway down her neck, her graceful profile carved in stone. She stared out the window as if she was watching her life dissipate behind her. And in a way, it was.

Knowing what she needed the most right now, Wolfe hit the speaker system and Guns N’ Roses blasted out, hard and loud and raw. He didn’t speak.

Just drove.

A fallen angel with a mean streak and a mohawk, Hades has spent thousands of years serving as Jailor of the Underworld. The souls he guards are as evil as they come, but few dare to cross him. All of that changes when a sexy fallen angel infiltrates his prison and unintentionally starts a riot. It’s easy enough to quell an uprising, but for the first time, Hades is torn between delivering justice — or bestowing mercy — on the beautiful female who could be his salvation…or his undoing.

Thanks to her unwitting participation in another angel’s plot to start Armageddon, Cataclysm was kicked out of Heaven and is now a fallen angel in service of Hades’s boss, Azagoth. All she wants is to redeem herself and get back where she belongs. But when she gets trapped in Hades’s prison domain with only the cocky but irresistible Hades to help her, Cat finds that where she belongs might be in the place she least expected…

The Demonica series is one of my top favorite PNR series ever! I know that every time I pick up a Larissa Ione book, I’m going to enjoy myself. And Hades absolutely didn’t let me down. I loved being back in the Demonica world, and I had so much fun reading the Jailor of the Underworld’s story. Infused with the perfect amount of humor, action, intensity, and sexiness, Hades is a must read for fans of Larissa Ione!

Cataclysm, a fallen angel booted out of Heaven, is working for Azagoth in the Underworld. She’s trying to get back into Heaven’s good graces, but in the meantime, she’s found a good place for herself in Azagoth’s realm. Cat also has a crush on a certain Jailor of the Underworld, He doesn’t seem to notice her, but when she accidentally starts a riot in his prison, she gets his attention – as well as the attention of some evil creatures. I adored Cat’s character. She’s so heartfelt and genuine, and her awkwardness and clumsiness made her that much more endearing. I thought that she was a perfect match to Hades.

I’d been curious about Hades ever since he first appeared in the series, so I was so happy to know that he would be getting his own story. I really liked Hades’s character – he’s such a flippant person, but he’s got a hidden depth to him that no one sees except Cat. He’s lived thousands of years in loneliness, but the moment he lays eyes on Cat, things start to change for him… excerpt Azagoth has forbidden him to have anything to do with her.

I want you, Cat. I want you more than I’ve wanted anything since I fell.”

But some things are worth the Grim Reaper’s wrath, right? As Hades fights the rioters to gain back control over his domain, he can’t get Cat out of his mind. He tries to resist temptation (I loved seeing Cat try to seduce Hades), but he soon comes to realize that Cat is the best thing to ever happen to him. And holy wow, Hades and Cat together are HOT!

“I don’t know what I did to deserve you, but I hope you know that I’d do it all over again to be with you. Thousands of years of loneliness was worth every second you’ve been in my life.”

I wish there was a bit more romance – I’m such a sap for love, and Hades and Cat were so perfect together. I wish they had a longer book! Still, Hades was a highly entertaining read – once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. It’s a short, sexy, sweet novel that paranormal fans and fans of the author shouldn’t miss!

“And what does good and evil feel like?” he rasped. “On your skin, I mean?”

“I’ll show you.” She moved toward him, every step popping out her hips and making her breasts bounce in a smooth, seductive rhythm. His mouth went dry again, but then it began to water as she reached out and placed her palm in the center of his chest.

Very slowly, she dragged her hand along the contours of his pecs, her touch so featherlike that he barely felt it, and yet, he was hyper-aware of every move her hand made, every centimeter of skin her palm passed over.

“Goodness and light,” she said softly, “is like bathing in Champagne. It’s tingly and effervescent. It wakes you up even as it relaxes you.”

“Like sex,” he murmured. “With someone you like.”

“With someone you like?” She blinked. “Why would you have sex with someone you didn’t like?”

A rumbling purr vibrated his chest. “Baby, it’s like fighting, but with orgasms.”

“And less blood, I suppose.”

“Not if you’re doing it right.” He waggled his brows, and she rolled her eyes. “So what does evil feel like to you? If good feels good, then does evil feel bad?”

“That’s the funny thing.” She inched closer, adding another palm to his chest, and he gripped the cup so hard he heard it crack. More. He needed more. And damn her for making him crave it when he’d been perfectly fine being alone for all these years. “It’s as seductive as good, but in a different way.” She shivered delicately. “It’s hot. If good is like bathing in Champagne, evil is like bathing in whiskey. There’s a burn, but it’s almost always a lovely burn.”

Yeah, he felt that lovely burn where she was touching him. As she talked, it spread across his chest and into his abdomen, then lower, to his pelvis and groin. Everything tightened and grew feverish with lust.

“Seems to me,” he said in a humiliatingly rough voice, “that bumping up against evil would be an incredible temptation for angels like you.”

“It is,” she purred. “Which is why we aren’t allowed to leave Heaven except under certain circumstances, and even then, we must have an escort. It’s one of the reasons I know I can’t ever enter Sheoul. To become a True Fallen would be to have my full powers of detection restored, and I’d be skewed toward evil. The few Seraphim who have become fallen angels are like drug addicts, seeking out the most evil beings they can find, to serve them, to just be near them.”

He wondered how having a Seraphim fallen angel as a warden in the Inner Sanctum would play out. Then Cat dragged her palms down his chest to his abs, and he forgot all about everything except what was happening right now, right here in his home.

The third book in a deliciously sexy series from USA Today bestselling and RITA award winning author Caroline Linden, in which an utterly shocking book–Ffty Shades of Grey for the Regency era– has all of London talking and gives more than one young miss a mind for scandal.

Penelope Weston does not like Benedict Lennox, Lord Atherton. He may be the suave and charming heir to an earl, as well as the most handsome man on earth, but she can’t forget how he abandoned a friend in need-nor how he once courted her sister, Abigail. He’s the last man she would ever marry. If only she didn’t feel so attracted to the arrogant scoundrel…

Once upon a time, Benedict thought he and Penelope got along rather well. But, though he needs a wealthy bride to escape his cruel father’s control, spirited Penelope just doesn’t suit his plans for a model marriage — until a good deed goes awry, and scandalous rumors link his name to Penelope’s. She might not be the quiet, sensible wife he thought he wanted, but she is beautiful…beguiling…and far more passionate than he ever imagined. Can a marriage begun in scandal become a love match, too?

Prologue
1805
Stratford Court, Richmond

Perseus lay in pieces on the floor. His arm, divorced from his body, held out the severed head of Medusa as if to ward his attacker off, and indeed, Benedict Lennox thought it might well have turned him to stone.

Before he fell, Perseus had held the head aloft, poised in mid-stride. The Gorgon’s face was twisted with rage and her eyes seemed to follow a person. It was hideous, even frightening, but Benedict’s father said it was a masterpiece, and Father knew art. As such it was displayed in a prominent position on the landing of the main staircase of Stratford Court, with a large mirror behind it to display the rear. Benedict always tried not to look right at it when he passed, but there was no avoiding it now. The base rested against the remains of the mirror, while Perseus and his trophy were scattered in pieces across the landing, amid the glittering shards of broken glass.

“Do you know anything about this?” The Earl of Stratford’s voice was idle, almost disinterested.

His son swallowed hard. “No, sir.”

“No?” The earl rocked back on his heels. “Nothing at all? Do you not even recognize it?”

Oh no. That had been the wrong answer. He searched frantically for the right one. “No, sir. I didn’t mean that. It’s a statue of Perseus.”

Lord Stratford made a soft, disappointed noise. “Not merely a statue of Perseus. This is one of the finest works of art by a great sculptor. See how exquisitely he renders the god’s form, how he encapsulates the evil of the Gorgon!” He paused. “But you don’t care about that, do you?”

Benedict said nothing. He knew there was no correct answer to that question.

Stratford sighed. “Such a pity. I had hoped my only son would pay more attention to his classical studies, but alas. Perhaps I should be grateful you recognized it at all. Our entire conversation would be for naught otherwise.”

Benedict Lennox gripped his hands together until his knuckles hurt. He stood rigidly at attention, mesmerized by the shattered glass and stone before him.

His father clasped his hands behind him, rather like Benedict’s tutor did when explaining a difficult point of mathematics. “Now, what else can you tell me about this statue?”

“Something terrible happened to it, sir.”

“Was it struck by lightning, do you think?” asked the earl in exaggerated concern.

The sky outside the mullioned windows was crystal clear, as blue as a robin’s egg. “Unlikely, sir.”

“No, perhaps not,” his father murmured, watching him with a piercing stare. Benedict longed to look away from that stare but knew it would be a mistake. “Perhaps it was a stray shot from a poacher?”

Stratford Court was set in a manicured park, surrounded only by gardens, graveled paths, and open rolling lawns. The woods where any poachers might roam were across the river. Benedict wished those woods were much closer. He wished he were exploring them right this moment. “Possible, but also unlikely, sir.”

“Not a poacher,” said Stratford thoughtfully. “I confess, I’ve quite run out of ideas! How on earth could a statue of inestimable value break without any outside influence? Not only that, but the mirror as well. It’s bad luck to break a mirror.”

He stayed silent. He didn’t know, either, though he suspected he was about to be punished for it. Bad luck, indeed.

“What do you say, Benedict? What is the logical conclusion?”

His tongue felt wooden. “It must have been someone inside the house, sir.”

“Surely not! Who would do such a thing?”

A flicker of movement caught his eye before he could think of an answer. He tried to check the impulse, but his father noticed his involuntary start and turned to follow his gaze. Two little girls peeped around the newel post at the bottom of the stairs. “Come here, my lovely daughters, come here,” said the earl.

Benedict’s heart sank into his shoes. Suddenly he guessed what had happened to the mirror. Samantha, who was only four, looked a little uncertain; but Elizabeth, who was seven, was pale-faced with fear. Slowly the sisters came up the stairs, bobbing careful curtsies when they reached the landing.

“Here are my pretty little ones.” The earl surveyed them critically. “Lady Elizabeth, your sash is dropping. And Lady Samantha, you’ve got dirt on your dress.”

“I’m sorry, Father.” Elizabeth tugged at her sash, setting it further askew. Samantha just put her hands behind her back and looked at the floor. She’d only recently been allowed out of the nursery and barely knew the earl.

“Your brother and I are attempting to solve a mystery.” The earl waved one hand at the wreckage. “Do you know what happened to this statue?”

Elizabeth went white as she stared at the Gorgon’s head. “It broke, Father,” piped up Samantha.

“Very good,” the earl told her. “Do you know how?”

Elizabeth’s terrified gaze veered to him. Benedict managed to give her an infinitesimal shake of his head before their father turned on him. “Benedict says he does not know,” Stratford said sharply. “Do not look at him for answers, Elizabeth.”

In the moment the earl’s back was turned to them, Elizabeth nudged her sister and touched one finger to her lips. Samantha’s brown eyes grew round and she moved closer to Elizabeth, reaching for her hand.

Stratford turned back to his daughters. “Do either of you know?” Elizabeth blinked several times, but she shook her head. “Samantha?” prodded their father. “It would be a sin not to answer me.”

Samantha’s expression grew worried. Benedict’s throat clogged and his eyes stung. He took a breath to calm his roiling nerves and spoke before his sister could. “It was my fault, Father.”

“Your fault?” Fury flashed in the earl’s face though his voice remained coldly calm. “How so, Benedict?”

What should he say? If the earl didn’t believe his story, he’d be whipped for lying, and then his sister would be punished for the actual crime, the nursemaid would be sacked for not keeping better watch over her charges, and his mother would be excoriated for hiring the nursemaid at all. And all over an ugly statue that everyone tried to avoid seeing.

But now Martin is back. And he wants to be friends. But he’s sending mixed signals to the Bunsen burner in Kaitlyn’s pants.

Will Martin re-capture Kaitlyn’s heart? Can Kaitlyn and Martin ever be just friends? Or, despite an abundance of chemistry, are some bonds just too unstable to endure?

Oh my god. I’m so freaking in love with this series, and I’m incredibly sad that this is Martin and Katy’s last book. But what a fantastic ending to a series I absolutely adore! I’m going to miss Kaitlyn and Martin – these are two characters who have completely stolen my heart, and I never want it back. Penny Reid is a goddess for creating these two wonderful, amazing characters. I never wanted their story to end, but the way it did… I couldn’t have imagine it better!

For those who haven’t read the series yet, I want to include as little spoilers as possible. So Capture… it starts off nine months after that god-awful cliffhanger from Heat. Things are completely different for Katy and Martin and their relationship. They both have been moving forward in their professional lives, but regarding their relationship? There’s still work to be done.

I love Katy. And Martin. And Katy and Martin together. They are honestly perfect in their flawed, intelligent, humorous ways. They’re the kind of characters who I want to hug and smoosh to my chest and never let go, because they are just so real in that honest, intelligent way.

“Thank you, Martin. Thank you for finding me in that chemistry closet and seeing me in the first place. Thank you for helping me see myself.”

Katy is a heroine I adored – she may have been frustrating at times, but it was with good reason. I loved being in her head and I loved her quirkiness and awkwardness. And Martin. Holy mackeral, this boy, this man. He’s certainly grown up in Capture – he’s now so much more mature and less quick to reach his temper. But of course, he’s still sexy as hell. The things he says and does make my heart swoon and pound. I’m so in love with him! He’s been a book boyfriend of mine since he first appeared in Attraction

“I don’t want a beautiful week with you. I want a beautiful lifetime.”

Basically, I loved this book. A few frustrations, some miscommunications aside, this book was perfect. Buuut I can’t give this a full 5 heart rating because I just wasn’t as completely OBSESSED with this final book as much as I was with the first book. Still, don’t let that deter you from reading this book, or this series. Penny Reid has written a phenomenal series. I absolutely adore her writing and can’t wait to read her other books. If you haven’t read the Elements of Chemistry series, I recommend you start it ASAP! It seriously is one of the best written series I’ve ever read. It’s certainly become one of my favorite series of all time!

Maybe love, at its essence, is being a mirror for another person–for the good parts and the bad. Perhaps love is simply finding that one person who sees you clearly, cares for you deeply, challenges you and supports you, and subsequently helps you see and be your true self.
Love, I decided, is being a sidekick.

Penny ReidSEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

After an erotic one-week fling with a musician she meets in a bar, Thea Cunning never expects to see Levi Black again. Then Monday morning comes around, and she discovers that her former lover is not only her professor, but he’s also one of the top criminal lawyers in the state of Massachusetts.

With everyone in class vying to be one of the twelve disciples—a group of twelve students that Professor Black takes under his wing—tensions run high. Thea considers dropping his class, given their passionate week together and their undeniable chemistry. After all, there are other (less infuriatingly sexy) law professors on campus.

But to accomplish her goal and get her father out of prison, Thea knows she needs to learn under the best of the best—and that’s Levi Black.

But can she learn under the best, without being under the best?

I’d never read any of J.J. McAvoy’s books before, but when I read the blurb for Black Rainbow, I had to get my hands on it! I’m a sucker for a good forbidden love story, and this one seemed amazing – a one-week fling with a man who turns out to be her law professor!? Yes, please! Black Rainbow was a fun, sexy read, and while I really enjoyed it, I had a few problems with it as well. Still, if you’re looking for a fast-paced, exciting, HOT read with a little suspense mixed in, this is for you!

“You are not a black rainbow. I see every one of your colors. You may have been one once, but you sure as hell aren’t one now.”

I really liked Thea and Levi together – they have an insanely hot chemistry together, which worked out well when they wanted to have a one-week, no-strings-attached fling. It’s during this week that we see the potential Thea and Levi have toward becoming an actual couple. They’re so sweet and funny, and their teasing and banter had me grinning a lot. We see them grow to care for each other over the week, these two people who usually have their hearts guarded. But when the week is over, they have to go back to their lives – without each other. What they never expected was to see each other again, but in a classroom setting.

Levi Black turns out to be Professor Black – as in, Thea’s professor. He’s also one of the top criminal lawyers in the state, his ruthlessness and expertise nicknaming him ‘El Diablo’. Thea, though, won’t be dropping his class just because they slept together for a week. She needs to learn how to be the best lawyer she can be in order to get her father out of prison, and the only way she can do that is the stay in Levi’s class.

I was really looking forward to the ‘forbidden romance’ aspect of the story. Black Rainbow is a teacher/student romance – I was able to really feel the romance part, but the forbidden aspect was a little lacking. Like I said before, Thea and Levi are absolutely great together, but I never really felt like there would be any consequences for them if they ever got caught. I was never anxious for them, which I’m a little sad about, because that’s the best part of a forbidden love story, for me anyway. Still, the romance was sweet and heartwarming. I loved how Levi was so caring and tender with Thea, and I loved how hard he worked to claim Thea’s heart.

“When will you get it? I don’t just want you at my side, I need you.”
I love you.

One thing that really grated on me, though, was that Levi never seemed to act his age, which was thirteen years older than Thea. Some things were just a liiitle bit unbelievable at times, especially with things regarding Thea’s father’s case, but it wasn’t that big of a deal so I was able to let it go. I was really able to enjoy the story more when the main thing I focused on was the romance. Black Rainbow was a quick, fun, sexy read, and though I didn’t love everything about it, I still had a great time reading it. I’m looking forward to reading the author’s other books!

“Oh please, don’t say sorry, this is embarrassing enough as it is. So much for me trying to be sexy,” I sighed.

He paused for a moment looking up at me like I was crazy— “I came into the bathroom to find you standing under my shower, wet, naked, and beautiful. Then, I got to carry you out of the shower like a man, and now, you’re sitting on my bed, dripping wet, with nothing around you but a towel. The only thing that could make this sexier is this,” he said as he reached up and pulled off my shower cap.

Goddamn it! I forgot I had it on. Why, God? Why?!

“You’re sexy without even trying,” he said, as he planted a light kiss on my kneecap, “now stop ruining this for me.”

I remained silent, allowing him to finish bandaging me up. At least I had finished ninety percent of shaving my legs before I got hurt.

“I’ll finish breakfast, while you get ready,” he said, as he stood back from me.

“Reaching up, I grabbed the edge of his shirt, and as I sat up on to the bed, I allowed the towel to fall. He swallowed, his eyes fixated on every inch of me.
