This unlikely getaway driver never expected to help the mayor escape…

After a six-year absence, Addison Potts is back in Charleston to stir things up. And what better place to make her villainous return than her estranged cousin’s wedding? Only, the nuptials hit a snag when the bride doesn’t show, leaving Addison to play getaway driver for the jilted groom. A groom whose heartbreaking smile and deep, southern drawl she should not be noticing…

Elijah Montgomery Du Pont is the future mayor of Charleston. From his military career to city hall, every detail of his life has been meticulously planned. Until now. His only respite from life’s sudden upheaval is Addison, his new, improbable best friend. She makes him happy. Grounds him. And public disapproval be damned, he’s not willing to give her up. But with an election on the line and public pressure rising, Addison—and the cruel hand of fate—might not give him a choice.

I’ve found a new book to add to my favorites of 2018 list, and Getaway Girl is IT! I absolutely LOVED this friends to lovers romance!! We have a mayor hero who’s self-conscious about his bubble butt and a fierce, dirty-talking heroine who saves him after his bride ditches him at the altar. It’s sweet, incredibly sexy (it’s Tessa Bailey, after all) and all-around the perfect friends to lovers romance – I highly recommend this for those who love trope!

I have a friend. A completely platonic, non-romantic one.
But occasionally I rub one out to her.

When Addison Potts moves back to Charleston and attends her estranged cousin’s wedding, the last thing she expects is be the getaway car for the jilted groom, one Captain Elijah Montgomery Du Pont, candidate for mayor. There’s just something about Elijah that pulls Addison, and she couldn’t resist helping him out. The two strike up the most unlikeliest of friendships – as a candidate for mayor, Elijah is expected to keep up appearances as the perfect Southern gentleman, which he is. Addison, on the other hand, is the black sheep of the family and town. But these two characters GET each other and are able to connect in a way they’ve never been able to connect with anyone else. Somehow, they end up being roommates, then friends… but is there possibly more?

“You own this city now, Mr. Mayor. Right now, that includes what’s under my dress.”

The tension throughout the book was divine. Elijah and Addison connect on the friendship level, yes, but there’s always an underlying sexual chemistry that’s hard to ignore. They struggle not to cross the line into something more, but when their dynamic is fun, witty, and flirty, it’s hard to know where the line even is. Tessa Bailey had me DYING for Addison and the Captain to just do the deed – this is one author who knows how to write sexual tension right. And when the line is crossed… let me tell you, the dirty talking queen doesn’t disappoint. I loved that the heroine was main dirty talker in this case, though Elijah could definitely dish some out too. The passion and intensity between these two was perfection!

“You have my heart. You have my soul. And you’re the first and land person to ever have either one. I love you first. And last. I’ve only got this feeling for you. No one else. Never. Do you hear me?”

If you love the friends to lovers trope, I can’t recommend Getaway Girl enough. I adored the characters, the story had me hooked, and the chemistry was off the charts. I also loved that this was in dual first-person POV. Tessa definitely has a knack for it, and I really hope she gives us more of it! Also… can we please have a story for Addison’s cousin, the runaway bride!?

Release Day Review: Roomies by Christina Lauren

Roomies by Christina Lauren
Series: Standalone
Publication Date: December 5th 2017
Links: Ebook • Paperback • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

From subway to Broadway to happily ever after. Modern love in all its thrill, hilarity, and uncertainty has never been so compulsively readable as in New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren’s (Beautiful Bastard, Dating You / Hating You) new romance.

Marriages of convenience are so…inconvenient.

For months Holland Bakker has invented excuses to descend into the subway station near her apartment, drawn to the captivating music performed by her street musician crush. Lacking the nerve to actually talk to the gorgeous stranger, fate steps in one night in the form of a drunken attacker. Calvin McLoughlin rescues her, but quickly disappears when the police start asking questions.

Using the only resource she has to pay the brilliant musician back, Holland gets Calvin an audition with her uncle, Broadway’s hottest musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway—until his reason for disappearing earlier becomes clear: he’s in the country illegally, his student visa having expired years ago.

Seeing that her uncle needs Calvin as much as Calvin needs him, a wild idea takes hold of her. Impulsively, she marries the Irishman, her infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves and Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway—in the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting—will Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

This is the kind of read that, when you finish, makes you say, “WHY DID THIS BOOK HAVE TO END!?” I couldn’t get enough of Roomies! I knew, as soon as I heard what it was about (marriage! of! convenience!) that I HAD to get my hands on it. I don’t typically read the marriage of convenience trope if it’s not a historical romance, but I had to give Christina Lauren’s modern take of the trope a try – and it was FANTASTIC. It’s an all-consuming, delightful read that I literally couldn’t put down. If you love well-written, unique, adorable contemporary romances, READ ROOMIES!

Every week, Holland Bakker goes out of her way in New York City to go to a certain subway station to admire the street musician who plays captivating music on his guitar. She’s developed a crush over the past few months watching and listening to him, but she’s never actually gone up to him and talked to him. Until one day she’s being attacked by a homeless man and the musician saves her… but leaves before she gets to thank him.

Holland wants to find a way to show Calvin her gratitude (and totally not because he’s gorgeous and has an Irish accent), and coincidentally, her Broadway musical director uncle is in need of a brilliant musician. Calvin blows the theater away with his music, but unfortunately can’t take the job… because he’s been living in the U.S. illegally for four years. Holland, wanting to do everything possible for this opportunity to work, offers to marry Calvin and pretend to be in love to help him gain U.S. citizenship. Ignoring the fact that she’s got feelings for him and oh, they’re lying to the government, everything should work out, right?

I swear that I was smiling for 90% of Roomies, it’s THAT much fun to read. I got swept away in the story, NEEDING Calvin and Holland to make their fake marriage a real one, and hoping alongside these characters that Calvin gets to stay in the U.S. I adored all the characters in the story – Holland in all her awkwardness and slow self-discovery, Calvin and his growing devotion and adoration for Holland, Holland’s supportive uncles who are so in love and compliment each other so well. I love that Roomies is not just about the romance between Holland and Calvin (though that shines pretty freaking well all on its own) but also about music and developing self-worth and being content in who you are. This book is brilliant, though I didn’t expect any less from Christina Lauren. I didn’t want Roomies to end, and am already craving more of Calvin and Holland. I highly recommend this book!

Release Day Review: The Emperor of Evening Stars by Laura Thalassa

The Emperor of Evening Stars by Laura Thalassa
Series: The Bargainer #2.5 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: October 15th 2017
Links: EbookGoodreads

In the beginning, there was darkness.
Before he met Callie, before he became the Bargainer, there was Desmond Flynn, the bastard son of a scribe. A boy born to a weak mother, cursed with little magic, and destined to marry a slave.

But fate had something else in mind.

Till darkness dies.
From the barren caves of Arestys to the palace of Somnia to the streets of earth, this is how Desmond Flynn, a fairy who began with nothing, became the Emperor of Evening Stars.

***This is a roughly 200 page novella told from Desmond Flynn’s perspective.***

“Love costs even more than power, even more than revenge or hate.”

Laura Thalassa has given me exactly what I didn’t know I needed in the Bargainer series. I have loved Callie and Desmond and their story from the very first page, but after reading The Emperor of Evening Stars, I’ve come to love them even more – Des especially. This novella (which is a pretty decent length) is told entirely in Des’s POV, from his very beginnings in the Caverns of Arestys, to his rise in becoming the King of Night, and finally, his love story with his soulmate. If you’re a fan of the series, this companion novella is a must read.

I loved everything about this novella. We learn about Des’s past, which is heartbreaking, and about his quest for revenge against his father. But what I was really dying for was the moment Des would meet Callie, his soulmate and love of his life. When he first learns that his soulmate is human – mortal – he is appalled and not too keen on her. But after experiencing loss after loss, he realizes that he’ll do anything to find the woman who will stand by him and love him. So he does.

I swear to the Undying Gods that once I’m able to, I will scour the earth for me soulmate. I’ll put my past behind me and focus on the future. And when I find her—if I find her—I won’t waste time fearing what others will think. I’ll cherish her, respect her, love her.
For all the days of her mortal life, I’ll claim her as mine.

Getting Des’s POV about his first meeting with Callie, how he fell in love with her, how he withstood being without her, was perfect. If you didn’t love him in the first two books, you will definitely fall head over heels in love with him in his novella. He has been such an enigmatic character throughout the series in Callie’s POV, but we get so much insight in how he thinks and feels. The wait for the third and final Bargainer has gotten just the tiniest bit easier thanks to this novella. And I’m hoping we get a few more chapters in Des’s POV in Dark Harmony!

Can’t she tell that she brings me to my knees? Morning, evening, and night, she’s always right there in every beat of my heart. That sweet voice of hers sings through my veins. It calls to me across worlds. Everything she is, is mine, and everything I am is hers. Always.

Release Day Review: The Learning Hours by Sara Ney

The Learning Hours by Sara Ney
Series: How to Date a Douchebag #3 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: September 26th 2017
Links: EbookAudible • Goodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review

He’s not a douchebag; but that doesn’t stop his friends from turning him into one.

MY FRIENDS WANT ME TO GET LAID.

So much so that they plastered my ugly mug all over campus, in bold printed letters:

Are you the lucky lady who’s going to break our roommate’s cherry?
Him: socially awkward man with average-sized penis looking for willing sexual partner. You: must have a pulse. He will reciprakate with oral. Text him at: 555-254-5551

The morons can’t even spell. And the texts I’ve been receiving are what wet dreams are made of. But I’m not like these douchebags, no matter how hard they try to turn me into one.

THIS ISN’T THE KIND OF ATTENTION I WANT.

One text stands out from hundreds. One number I can’t bring myself to block. She seems different. Hotter, even in black and white.

However, after seeing her in person, I know she’s not the girl for me. But my friends won’t let up–they just don’t get it. Douchebags or not, there’s one thing they’ll never understand: GIRLS DON’T WANT ME.

Especially her.

There’s not much I can say about The Learning Hours without giving anything away regarding characters, plot, etc., but what I can say is how much I freaking LOVED this book with my whole heart. I fell head over heels in love with the hero and heroine, who felt so unique and refreshing to me. I was surprised by this book in the best way, since it is quite different from the previous two books in the How to Date a Douchebag series. It’s unlike any new adult college romance I’ve ever read, and for that, I’m grateful to Sara Ney. If you want a book with a unique take on an NA/college/sports romance, I highly recommend The Learning Hours!

After wholeheartedly loving the second book in the series (Zeke makes me do heart eyes), I had no idea if Sara Ney could top what is still one of my favorite reads of the year. Well, it turns out Sara is on a freaking roll because this book ALSO became one of my favorite reads of 2017. The Learning Hours is entertaining, romantic, sweet, funny, adorable – everything you can imagine a new adult romance to be, with some college wrestling sprinkled in. I had so much fun reading this book – my heart was swooning like crazy over the charming, wonderful, atypical hero. The chemistry between the main characters had me giggling and smiling near the entire book.

I honestly can’t recommend The Learning Hours enough. As soon as I picked this book up, I couldn’t put it down. It’s been a while since I read a good new adult romance, but this one had me addicted from the very first page. Anyone who loves romance or new adult needs this book in their lives!

Release Day Review: Irresistible You by Kate Meader

Irresistible You by Kate Meader
Series: Chicago Rebels #1 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: August 14th 2017
Links: Ebook • Paperback • Goodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Hot in Chicago series author Kate Meader returns with her all new, scorching Chicago Rebels hockey series, featuring her signature “steamy sex scenes, colorful characters, and riveting dialogue” (Romantic Times). Three estranged sisters inherit their late father’s failing hockey franchise and are forced to confront a man’s world, their family’s demons, and the battle-hardened ice warriors skating into their hearts.

Harper Chase has just become the most powerful woman in the NHL after the death of her father Clifford Chase, maverick owner of the Chicago Rebels. But the team is a hot mess—underfunded, overweight, and close to tapping out of the league. Hell-bent on turning the luckless franchise around, Harper won’t let anything stand in her way. Not her gender, not her sisters, and especially not a veteran player with an attitude problem and a smoldering gaze designed to melt her ice-compacted defenses.

Veteran center Remy “Jinx” DuPre is on the downside of a career that’s seen him win big sponsorships, fans’ hearts, and more than a few notches on his stick. Only one goal has eluded him: the Stanley Cup. Sure, he’s been labeled as the unluckiest guy in the league, but with his recent streak of good play, he knows this is his year. So why the hell is he being shunted off to a failing hockey franchise run by a ball-buster in heels? And is she seriously expecting him to lead her band of misfit losers to a coveted spot in the playoffs?

He’d have a better chance of leading Harper on a merry skate to his bed…

I can always count on Kate Meader to deliver fun and sexy contemporary romances, and she has yet to disappoint me. This time, she’s moved from hot firefighters to gorgeous hockey players in the Chicago Rebels series. You have no idea how excited I was when I heard she’d be writing hockey romances – it’s been a while since I’ve read a good sports romance, so Irresistible You came at the perfect time! I ended up loving this book so much. A Cajun hockey player who whispers sweet nothings in French? A female owner of a hockey team? Can you see how I couldn’t help but love this fabulous read?

The Chicago Rebels series centers around three estranged sisters who’ve come together after the death of their father and the inheritance of his hockey team. The series kicks off with the oldest sister who has been preparing to lead the Rebels practically her whole life. But even though Harper Chase is prepared to take charge and show this male-dominated industry who’s boss, she’s not prepared for the newest member of the Chicago Rebels to set her insides on fire and make her want more in life in addition to the team.

Remy DuPre is known as the jinxed hockey player who is always so close to winning the cup, but has yet to succeed. This year is his final year, so to say he’s aggravated that he’s been traded into a sinking ship that is the Chicago Rebels team would be an understatement. To ensure he’s got a chance at the Stanley Cup, he make a deal with his irresistible new team owner – he’ll shape up the Rebels if he’s traded onto a better team that has a real chance at the cup.

Harper and Remy have an undeniable chemistry that is so passionate and sexy. I loved how these two were around each other. A little angry, a lot lusty, and very curious to see how their tension translates in bed. Harper is resistant to starting anything with her hockey player because of the backlash she’d face as a female owner, but Remy is irresistible in his determination to prove to her that what they have is worth fighting for. Will he succeed in charming his way into his team’s beautiful, ambitious owner?

Irresistible You is seriously a fantastic hockey romance. The characters are charming and lovable (Remy is to die for), the romance is as sexy as it is sweet, and did I mention that it’s hockey!? All of this combined made this book an amazing start to a series I have no doubt I’ll come to love even more with each book. Right now I can’t wait to read the next one!
