Bully and Victim

Friend and Lover

Past and Future

Ellie McCallum and Flynn Hendrick’s story was as painful as it was devastating. But they were able to find within each other an unlikely yet beautiful love. Despite the obstacles that tried to keep them apart.

And together they rose out of the ashes of their tragic history.

Now years after their life changing reunion Ellie is back in Wellston, having just graduated from college and ready to start her future with the man who taught her how to love. However, returning to a town that held so much bitterness and anger was the last place she wanted to start over.

But for Flynn, who is now an art professor at the community college and firmly rooted in the place that gave them their beginning, she’d do just about anything.

Yet it’s difficult building a life when you’ve only just learned how to live.

And love, no matter how strong, doesn’t always conquer all.

Ellie and Flynn must learn how far they are willing to go to stay together. Or whether the ghosts of the past will consume them both.

Because finding a happily ever after is harder than it seems. Particularly when you’re fighting against the one thing that could destroy you.

Yourself.

Lead Me Not teaser

excerpt

I stared harder at the picture, uncomfortable with the odd sense of familiarity I felt. Looking at the woman’s graceful yet agonized form, I felt as though I should recognize her.

Bothered by my increasing disquiet, I stood up and walked closer. This was not your typical campus painting of daffodils and laughing students. I had seen this particular kind of art several times before. I leaned in to try to see the details in the poor lighting. And there it was- the tiny patterns on the woman’s dress composed of dozens of Xs.

I didn’t notice any numbers or words in this picture, though, so I didn’t understand what its intent was. It was my understanding that X’s paintings held the clues to the location of the club, Compulsion. But this picture seemed to have nothing to do with that.

This was a painting created for some other purpose.

“So what do you think?”

I looked over my shoulder to find Maxx standing behind me. I turned back to the picture, not bothering to answer him. The truth was, my outburst in the group had left me feeling raw and vulnerable, and seeing him so soon after making a gigantic ass of myself was embarrassing.

As he came up beside me, the sleeves of our jackets brushed against each other. Maxx inclined his head toward the painting and asked me again, “Well, what do you think of it?”

I shrugged, not really in the mood for small talk. My pounding head couldn’t handle a go-around with the group Romeo. I started to walk away from him when he grabbed hold of my arm.

“Wait, Aubrey. Please.” It was that word that did it. Please. It was uttered softly and sincerely. And it held me as fast and surely as if he had put his arms around me.

Excerpt

His eyes were piercing in their directness and I knew he wasn’t fooled by my attempts at sarcasm and nonchalance.  My uncomfortable attraction to him, that had begun only a few days before, practically oozed from my pours.  It was mortifying

And I knew I needed to shut this down.  For both of our sakes. It wasn’t appropriate.  And he was making me feel…disconcerted.

“Well, I think the group is going to be really helpful.  I’m sure you’ll get a lot out of it,” I said lamely, hoping he got the point.  It seemed extremely important to remind us both of who I was and what my role was in his life.  I needed to reinforce where I belonged.  I was a counselor in training.  Someone to guide him on a difficult journey.

Nothing more.

Maxx gave me a look that was hard to decipher.  “I hope you’re right,” he said, running a dirty hand across his face, leaving a smudge along the bridge of his nose.

I had to clench my hand into a fist in order to resist the urge to wipe it away.  And I knew there was more than my OCD at work here.

His words unsettled me.  Was I reading a subtext that wasn’t there?  Or was he purposefully communicating something that I had yet to figure out?

My guess was the latter.

He suddenly dropped his eyes and I was surprised by the vulnerability that danced across his face.

“I really hope you’re right,” he said softly and I didn’t know whether the comment was for him or for me.

I tilted my head at him, looking at him closely.  He seemed lost in thought and I wondered what had him so consumed.

I couldn’t help but be curious about him. He made it impossible not to be.  He was obviously a complicated man with a complicated past.  I was simultaneously intrigued and annoyed that I was intrigued.

Because there was a definite line I shouldn’t cross.  So why after meeting this man once was that boundary so hard for me to remember?

Maxx frowned and opened his mouth, then closed it again.  Then he looked at me and I watched as his face smoothed over and any sign of openness was lost.

Cole Brandt was the self-centered and philandering lead singer for Generation Rejects

Vivian Baily was a flaky, attention seeking drama queen.

Apart they were challenging…together they were complete and total chaos.

Cole and Vivian were two people who should never have been together.

Yet they crashed into each other at every turn.

Their relationship was anything but stable. But it was passionate. It was messy. It was hopelessly seductive. And it might possibly drive them both insane.

They fought. They made up. They screamed. They made love.

They hated and they loved in equal measure.

And now that Generation Rejects are starting to hit it big and the band is on the road, temptation and massive egos could very well spell the end of their roller coaster.

If only they could stay away from each other.

But Vivian has finally reached her breaking point. Tired of their endless cycle, she is ready to say goodbye to Cole for good.

Yet Cole isn’t one to go away quietly. Particularly when he is starting to realize exactly what he stands to lose if Vivian walks away.

As his world begins to turn upside down, Cole realizes that the one person who can hold him together is the girl who may no longer want him.

Love can be a comedy of errors, particularly for two people who never seem to get the timing right.

And in the crazy world of rock and roll, the hardest lessons to learn just might be the ones with the sweetest rewards.

excerpt

I pressed myself up against Cole, my face an inch from his.  My heart was thumping wildly, my blood was buzzing with fury.

“I am sick of your bullshit, Cole.  You better walk the line tonight or you’ll be sorry.  Do I make myself clear?  I didn’t come all this way to be humiliated by you.  If you want me here, then fucking act like it,” I hissed.

Cole’s eyes snapped and sizzled, his chest heaving up and down.  He was flushed and just as furious as I was.

Then he grabbed the back of my head, his fingers curling into my hair and smashed his mouth down on mine.

The kiss was bruising and forceful.  This wasn’t about romance.  This was about domination.  I bit down on his bottom lip and could taste his blood.

He pulled away, his lips swollen and bleeding.  “I’m happy you’re here.  Is that what you want me to say?  Is that what you want to hear?”  He grabbed my upper arms and pushed me back against the wall, his pelvis thrusting against mine.

“Does that make you happy?” he demanded.

I couldn’t take my eyes away from him.  He was gorgeous.  And he made me feel completely and totally alive.  I craved this manic insanity that I only seemed to experience when I was with him.

Why couldn’t I be content with nice and normal?  Why did I crawl over broken glass for this madness?

Why did I allow Cole to degrade me and humiliate me over and over again?  Why did I scream at him and make a scene just so I could get this reaction from him?

What the hell was wrong with me?

What the hell was wrong with us?

I was so turned on I could barely stand.  I wanted him to take me then and there.  I didn’t give a crap about the people openly gawking at us. I thrived on it.

I wanted the hard press of his body against mine. I wanted the chaos.

“Yes! It makes me happy,” I bit out, giving him that tiny victory.

“Good,” he said, leaning in and kissing me tenderly on the nose.  His thumbs caressed the side of my face.  A remarkably gentle act from such a volatile man.

“Stand in front.  I want to see you when I sing,” Cole murmured, leaning in to kiss me on the mouth.  And this one wasn’t hateful or angry.  It was soft and almost loving.  And it shook me to my core.

Then he was gone and I stood there, my back against the wall, trying to catch my breath, not sure what the hell had just happened.
