There’s no such thing as a little in love…

Elle Wheaten’s priorities: friends, career, and kick-ass shoes. Then there’s the muscular wall of stubbornness that’s security expert Archer Hunt—who comes before everything else. No point in telling Mr. “Feels-Free Zone” that, though. Elle will just see other men until she gets over Archer . . . which should only take a lifetime . . .

There’s no such thing as a little in lust…

Archer’s wanted the best for Elle ever since he sacrificed his law-enforcement career to save her. But now that she’s earned happiness and success, Archer just wants Elle 24/7. Their chemistry could start the next San Francisco Earthquake, and Archer doesn’t want to be responsible for the damage. The alternative? Watch her go out with guys who aren’t him . . .

There is such a thing as…

As far as Archer’s concerned, nobody is good enough for Elle. But when he sets out to prove it by sabotaging her dates, she gets mad—and things get hot as hell. Now Archer has a new mission: prove to Elle that her perfect man has been here all along…

I freaking ADORED this book!! I was in the mood for a feel-good contemporary romance, which Jill Shalvis definitely delivered. This is only my second book by her, and my first in the Heartbreaker Bay series, but I’m thinking I need to read the rest of this series and more from her backlist… asap! Gah, this book was seriously so sweet and funny. I swooned over Elle and Archer’s story. If you’re ever in the mood for a romance that will totally put a smile on your face, you need to get your hands on Accidentally on Purpose!

Elle used to have a crush on Archer, which started back when he saved her when she was a teenager, but she’s been trying to find other men to get over him. It doesn’t help that now, years later, they’re working in such close environments that a day can’t go by without seeing each other. They have a brilliant chemistry between them – they get on each others’ nerves, they’re the only ones that can rile the other up, and they definitely want each other. Archer has tried to stay away from Elle for her sake, but watching her date men that aren’t good enough for her and will never be good enough for her is starting to break him. So he decides to take matters into his own hands and give her the man she needs… himself.

God. He already couldn’t remember what it’d been like before her. He’d thought everything was great in his life but then he’d been thrown a curveball in the form of this gorgeous, passionate woman who he suddenly couldn’t get enough of.
Which made it official. He was hers, completely. “You’re beautiful, Elle,” he said, pressing tight against her. “The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”

Elle is such a fantastic heroine! Her stubbornness and strength had my admiration, and her banter with Archer had me giggling and dying for more. Anytime these two characters were together on the pages, I honestly couldn’t stop smiling. They are ADORABLE together – they just don’t realize it. 😉 Their friends had me cracking up as well – I definitely need to get on reading the other couples’ books soon!

The easiest way to make me happy with a book is to give me a hero who works hard to win the heroine’s love, and Archer did just that. He’s a little gruff and just as stubborn as Elle… but the way he worshipped Elle had me having hearts in my eyes. If you’re a fan of well-written, funny, feel-good romances, I highly recommend you pick up this book. Accidentally on Purpose was such a fantastic read – I’m really hoping Jill Shalvis’ other books are like this one, because if so, I’m going to love them all!

“You’re gorgeous,” he said reverently. “The best thing that’s ever happened to me.” He met her gaze. “I’ve never wanted anything or anyone the way I want you.”

Audiobook Review: Penmort Castle by Kristen Ashley

Penmort Castle by Kristen Ashley
Series: Ghosts and Reincarnation #1 (full reading order below)
Audiobook Publication Date: January 24th 2017
Length: 16 hours and 52 minutes
Narrated by: Abby Craden
Links: Audible • EbookPaperback • Goodreads
Source: I received an audiobook in exchange for an honest review

Cash Fraser is planning revenge and to get it he needs the perfect woman. So he hires her. Abigail Butler has lost nearly everything in her life and she’s about to lose the home she loves.

Cash meets Abby, who is posing as a paid escort, and the minute he does he knows he’s willing to pay for more than Abby being his pretend girlfriend. A lot more. Abby needs the money or the last thing that links her to her dead family and husband will be gone. The deal is struck but both Cash and Abby get more than they bargained for.

Cash realizes very quickly that Abby isn’t what she seems and while he changes strategies, Abby discovers that Cash’s legacy, Penmort Castle, is like all the tales say – very, very haunted. Making matters worse, the ghost in residence wants her dead.

Abby’s found herself in the battle of her life so she enlists Mrs. Truman, her nosy neighbor, Jenny, her no-nonsense friend, Cassandra McNabb, white witch and clairvoyant with a penchant for wearing scarves (and lots of them), and Angus McPherson, dyed-in-the-wool Scot (which means he hunts ghosts in a kilt) to fight the vicious ghost who has vowed that she will rest at nothing to kill the true, abiding love of the master of Penmort.

The only PNR books I’ve read/listened from Kristen Ashley are her The Three series, which I love, so when I heard her PNR Ghosts and Reincarnation series was coming out in audio, I got so excited! I usually don’t have time to read her looong books, so I’m a big fan of her audiobooks. Penmort Castle is the first standalone in the G&R series, and while I can’t say it was up to the level of The Three books, I can say that I did enjoy it. It’s very light on the PNR, so if you’re not a big fan of that genre but you love KA, this might be the book for you!

Cash Fraser is hell-bent on revenge – he wants to take back ownership of Penmort Castle, which is his by birthright, from his scheming uncle. But as part of his plan of revenge, he needs a woman to pose as his girlfriend. Luckily, or unluckily, Abigail Butler happens to be where Cash is – except he thinks she’s a professional paid escort, which is why he offers her a deal to play pretend-girlfriend. Abby is offended, but she needs the money – the house she inherited from her grandmother is in dire shape, and since the death of her husband, she’s in financial need. So she accepts Cash’s offer, which starts off a whirlwind affair full of passion, secrecy, and an evil ghost.

Though the relationship is fake, the chemistry between Abby and Cash is very real. Soon enough, neither can tell the difference between their feigned and real feelings, because once they’ve gotten to know each other, they want more. But Abby is still hung up over her late husband and feels guilty for wanting another man. Cash’s alpha-male tendencies won’t allow her to feel ashamed over their relationship, because when he wants something, which is Abby, mind, body, and soul, he’ll have it.

I loved Abby Craden’s narration in Until the Sun Falls from the Sky (my review here), but I can’t say that I loved her narration in Penmort Castle. It sounded a little off and awkward, probably because of the British accents in the audiobook. It didn’t flow very well and took me out of my enjoyment at times. This was one of the main reasons why I can’t rate this higher – that and the ghost plot of the story. I almost wished the ghost wasn’t included as part of the book because it was honestly a little boring to listen to.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the romance aspect of this audiobook – it’s classic KA with its feisty, endearing heroine and sexy, alpha-male hero. I’m looking forward to the rest of the Ghosts and Reincarnation series – hopefully they’ll all be out in audio soon!

Lucas Thatcher has always been my enemy.

It’s been a decade since I’ve seen him, but our years on opposite coasts were less of a lasting peace and more of a temporary cease-fire. Now that we’re both back in our small town, I know Lucas expects the same old war, but I’ve changed since high school—and from the looks of it, so has he.

The arrogant boy who was my teenage rival is now a chiseled doctor armed with intimidating good looks. He is Lucas Thatcher 2.0, the new and improved version I’ll be competing with in the workplace instead of the schoolyard.

I’m not worried; I’m a doctor now too, board-certified and sexy in a white coat. It almost feels like winning will be too easy—until Lucas unveils a tactic neither of us has ever used before: sexual warfare.

The day he pushes me up against the wall and presses his lips to mine, I can’t help but wonder if he’s filling me with passion or poison. Every fleeting touch is perfect torture. With every stolen kiss, my walls crumble a little more. After all this time, Lucas knows exactly how to strip me of my defenses, but I’m in no hurry to surrender.

Knowing thy enemy has never felt so good.

For those of you who love romantic comedies that are over-the-top and dramatic, Anything You Can Do is perfect for you. It’s ridiculous and hilarious, and if you’re in the mood for a feel-good romance that will have you laughing, this will hit all the right buttons for you. It’s not quite my favorite R.S. Grey novel, but it’s very reminiscent of her previous rom-coms, so fans of her books will definitely enjoy this enemies-to-lovers romance!

In light of the sheer longevity of our rivalry, people always want to know what terrible even had transpired to precipitate it all. The truth is, we’ve always been this way. I am the Annie Oakley to his Frank Butler and I firmly believe that anything he can do, I can do better.

Daisy Bell and Lucas Thatcher have been competitors since the moment they were born (which coincidentally was on the same day). They are rivals, arch-nemeses, enemies, and every synonym in between. Their houses were next to each other, they competed against one another in high school, moved across the country away from each other for college, and now, post-medical school and at twenty-eight, Daisy and Lucas have returned home… to work at the same small-town family practice.

Both Lucas and Daisy hilariously try to sabotage the other and make the other look bad so that their boss, Dr. McCormick, will choose only one of them to take over the practice. They do some crazy, exasperating shenanigans as if they were high schoolers all over again. It’s entertaining to say the least, though it doesn’t exactly move the story forward. A majority of the book is spent fighting between Lucas and Daisy, and what I really wanted was for the romance to develop. It’s a fine line between love and hate, but love finally takes over once they get over their denial of it.

“I love you, which seems crazy because up until about four days ago, I really thought I hated you. But when you think about it, love and hate aren’t so very different, right? To love someone is to strive to be a better person for them, and isn’t that what our hateful little competition has been about the whole time?”

There’s nothing crazy deep or emotional in this book – which was exactly what I expected and wanted. It’s pure enjoyable rom-com, the kind of read that will easy take your mind off reality for a short while and give you plenty of laughs and giggles. If you’re a fan of humor and enemies-to-lovers romances, you definitely need to give this book a try.

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things… everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors are Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I’m a comedy geek and love all things “funny”. Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.

Audiobook Review: Silver-Tongued Devil by Rosalind James

Silver-Tongued Devil by Rosalind James
Series: Portland Devils #1
Audiobook Publication Date: January 6th 2017
Length: 12 hours and 24 minutes
Narrated by: Tanya Eby
Links: Audible • EbookPaperback • Goodreads
Source: I received an audiobook in exchange for an honest review

No more wild rides. No more wild side.

Blake Orbison’s pro football career with the Portland Devils may have come crashing to an end, but not calling the signals anymore just gives him more time to devote to his business enterprises, including the latest and greatest: the opening of the Wild Horse Resort in scenic north Idaho. And that other one, too. Blake’s on the marriage track now, and he’s got a game plan. But when he runs into a trespasser leaping from his shoreline boulders into his lake, what’s a good ol’ boy to do but strip down and join her?

Dakota Savage is nobody’s temporary diversion, least of all the man responsible for her family’s semi-desperate circumstances. Some people may think she has a piercing too many, but she’s had more than enough of being called trash in this town. She’s come home to Wild Horse to run her stepfather’s painting business, and any extra time she has goes into creating her stained glass. An overpaid, entitled, infuriating NFL quarterback is no part of her life plan, no matter how sweet he talks. No matter how slow he smiles. No matter what.

This is my first time experiencing any book by Rosalind James and I have to admit, I liked it! The narrator was fantastic, and the romance was sweet and enjoyable. It’s a good start to a new series, one that I’ll probably continue with in audio, especially if Tanya Eby is narrating. If you’re a fan of well-narrated contemporary romances, I’d definitely recommend this audiobook!

Former NFL quarterback-turned millionaire businessman, Blake Orbison is in search of the perfect wife. The injury that caused him to quit football had him reevaluating life and what was most important: family. So he’s set off to create a family of his own, starting with a wife that has certain qualities he has in mind. But when he meets Dakota Savage, skinny dipping in his lake of all things, he finds that what he thought he wanted in a wife wasn’t really what he needed at all.

A stained glass artist, Dakota is the very opposite of what Blake wants in a wife – she’s wild, artistic, outspoken, just wonderfully more and complex with a difficult past. She wants to travel and never settle down. I loved the passion Dakota has inside her. She and Blake complemented each other really well, despite not expecting to find anything meaningful between each other. Their romance developed slowly and genuinely, and I really loved the way they were able to support, encourage, and lean on each other.

I wasn’t a big fan of the suspense regarding Blake’s resort – I more wanted this audiobook to focus more on the romance aspect. I did enjoy the dynamics of Dakota’s family and her relationship with her stepfather, which tugged a bit at my heartstrings. The beginning half of the this had me gripped to the story, but the second half kind of mellowed out a bit for me. I feel like it’s more of an “it’s me, not you” sort of thing, so I’d still recommend Silver Tongued Devil. It’s sweet, slow, if a little predictable, but if you’re in a mood for a feel-good contemporary romance, you should give this a try!

Release Day Review: Eleventh Grave in Moonlight by Darynda Jones

The Curse of Tenth Grave by Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson #11 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: January 24th 2017
Links: Ebook • Hardcover • Paperback • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

My entire life can be summed up in one sentence:
“Well, that didn’t go as planned.”
—T-Shirt

A typical day in the life of Charley Davidson involves cheating husbands, errant wives, missing people, philandering business owners, and, oh yeah…demons, hell hounds, evil gods, and dead people. Lots and lots of dead people. As a part time Private Investigator and full-time Grim Reaper, Charley has to balance the good, the bad, the undead, and those who want her dead.

Now, Charley is learning to make peace with the fact that she is a goddess with all kinds of power and that her own daughter has been born to save the world from total destruction. But the forces of hell are determined to see Charley banished forever to the darkest corners of another dimension. With the son of Satan himself as her husband and world-rocking lover, will Charley be able to defeat the ultimate evil and find a way to have her happily ever after after all?

I’ve been a long-time fan of the Charley Davidson series – it is seriously the bomb dot com!! It’s one of my all-time favorite urban fantasy series out there, and it’s THE funniest series I’ve ever read. I’m never disappointed with each new installment – every single one is hilarious, action-packed, suspenseful, and full of the goodness and sexiness that is Reyes Farrow. And in Eleventh Grave in Moonlight, Charley Davidson, PI extraordinaire and ghost reaper, is up to her usual mystery-solving shenanigans. If you love this series, you don’t want to miss this latest installment! But I have to warn you… the ending will kill you!

Charley has just gotten used to the fact that she’s not just the grim reaper, but also a goddess with immense power. But even though she’s a goddess, she probably shouldn’t have threatened the Big Guy upstairs with world domination… because now she’s got angels following her every move. That doesn’t stop her from her day-time job, and it’s definitely not going to stop her from finding out who’s stalking her best friend’s daughter. It’s never a dull day in Charley’s world, especially when you also have the son of Satan as a husband. 😉

Charley is one of the most endearing heroines I’ve ever read, mainly because of how utterly ridiculous and funny her narrative is. I don’t know how Darynda Jones manages to keep up the incredible humor that’s classic to Charley, but I hope she never stops. I love it! And I love how protective and stubborn she is – there is nothing she won’t do to protect her family. And speaking of family, Charley’s gang is one of my favorite cast of characters to ever read. All of her family and friends, from her bff Cookie to her Uncle Bob, from her husband Reyes to the mysterious Osh, all bring such life to the story. I have to admit though… Reyes is still my ultimate fav – there’s no book boyfriend like him!

In this book, we find out a little more of Reyes’ past and Charley’s abilities as a goddess. I didn’t love this book quite as much as the previous ones, mainly because I felt it moved a little too slow… except for the freaking ending. Mother of all cliffhangers, the ending killed me! I nearly screamed when I got to it. I can’t believe Darynda did this to us – I’m seriously dying for the next book! But other than the ending, it’s another classic Charley Davidson book, full of laughs, quirks, trouble, and craziness. If you’ve been keeping up with the series, you need to get your hands on this book ASAP. And if you haven’t experienced the craziness that is Charley Davidson, you need to start!
