What he wants, he takes with no remorse or guilt.

She stood out in his club like a gem, unspoiled and untouched. A lamb among wolves, she clearly didn’t belong. Drawn to her innocence he watched as she was surrounded by men who saw what he did—but no one but him could touch her. He summoned her to his private quarters. He sensed her fear. He also recognized the desire in her eyes. And he knew she wouldn’t leave before he possessed her. She had no need to know his secrets. Not until he had her under his complete and utter control.

What he wants, she isn’t sure she can give him.

The moment he told her want he wanted, she couldn’t resist. Instinct told her to run, but her heart said stay and walk the fine line between pleasure and pain. Though she wasn’t sure she could ever completely surrender, the primal part of her wanted to try, even knowing this man could break her in ways she never imagined. Because once he possessed her, he owned her and it would be too late to turn back. She can only pray that he doesn’t destroy her in the end.

Mastered is the first book in Maya Banks’ The Enforcers series, and it tells the story of innocent and naive Evangeline being thrust into an erotic world that is completely out of her comfort zone. Drake Donovan is the lion to her lamb, and while Mastered should have been a cliché, I actually enjoyed it for the most part. It’s an exciting start to a new series that has a great potential to become even better.

Evangeline lost her virginity to a guy who only viewed her as a challenge, so her friends want her to get back at him by going to an exclusive club and showing him what he’s missing out on. Evangeline is shy and doesn’t have much confidence in herself, and even though she’s not a virgin anymore, she’s innocent in a lot of ways. But when she walks into Impulse, she has no idea that her entire life is going to change and that she’s going to be claimed by a rich, powerful man.

Drake Donovan is alpha to the max – he needs control in all things, and the one thing he can’t control is his need for Evangeline. Her innocence draws him, even when he knows he doesn’t deserve her, but he’s going to claim and dominate her anyway because what he wants, he gets.

What I liked most about Mastered was how Drake opens up Evangeline’s eyes toward herself and helps her develop her self-confidence and sexuality. Evangeline’s insecurity annoyed me in the beginning of the book, because she keeps repeating over and over how she never belongs anywhere, but with Drake’s help, the way she views herself starts to change and she becomes more endearing than anything to me by the end of the book. What was also sweet was the friendships that grew between Evangeline and Drake’s best friends. I adored the way all these hardened, alpha males became so smitten with her!

Mastered is book 1 of 2 in Drake and Evangeline’s story. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book, because I did not expect that cliffhanger ending in Mastered! If you’re a fan of steamy, kinky books with a dominating alpha billionaire and a heroine who is his complete opposite, then I’d recommend this book.

I did it. I married a billionaire.

My reasons are my own, but the last thing I expected was to feel owned.

I may have taken vows, but I’m still determined to be me.

Now his rules are taking over my world, but I’m not the kind of girl to just obey.

There’s only one problem: I might actually be falling for him…

I have no idea how this marriage is going to go, but holding onto a piece of myself while succumbing to his dirty pleasures is shaping up to be the ride of a lifetime.

I enjoyed Dirty Pleasures a lot more than the first installment in the Dirty Billionaire Trilogy! While I liked Dirty Billionaire, it was missing the relationship development between Holly and Creighton that becomes much more apparent in Dirty Pleasures. In this book, it’s clear that Creighton is fighting for their marriage to work, and I was rooting for him every step of the way. If you were a fan of the first book, you’ll want to get your hands on this sequel.

“You’re not an afterthought. Jesus Christ, Holly. When you look at me like that, you’re my only fucking thought.”

Dirty Pleasures picks up right after that cliffhanger in Dirty Billionaire, and Creighton is chasing after his country singer wife who left him. Creighton is quickly realizing that the woman he had a one night stand with and married is becoming the most important thing in his life. As for Holly though… Holly’s number one priority right now is her singing career, and she won’t allow anyone, even her husband, to jeopardize it.

I liked Creighton so much more in Dirty Pleasures, because he’s actually become a likable guy. In the first book, he was too alpha and controlling and almost unreasonable, but in the second book, he grows to see that marriage is a compromise. He wants his marriage with Holly to work, and it’s clear that he’s putting his time and effort into doing so.

Holly grew to frustrate me. I liked that she puts her career ahead of everything and won’t bow down to Creighton, but I wanted to see her realize how much effort Creighton is putting into their marriage. Holly reasonably has doubts about the two of them lasting, and she becomes even more scared when she realizes she’s falling for her husband.

This book is just as hot and dirty as the previous book was, but it ends in a cliffhanger in the exact same way. I have high hopes for the final installment, and I’m hoping we’ll get to know more about Creighton’s past. I’m excited to see how Holly and Creighton’s story will end!

When Emily Wayborn goes home to visit her mom while on hiatus from her hit TV show, she receives a voicemail from her former best friend, Amber. Though the two were once notorious party girls, they haven’t spoken in years. Although the message might sound benign to anyone else, Amber uses a safe word that Emily recognizes, a word they always used to get out of sticky situations during their wild days. And what’s more chilling than the voicemail: it turns out that Amber has gone missing.

Determined to track down her friend, Emily follows a chain of clues that lead her to the enigmatic billionaire Reeve Sallis, a hotelier known for his shady dealings and play boy reputation. Now, in order to find Amber, Emily must seduce Reeve to learn his secrets and discover the whereabouts of her friend. But as she finds herself more entangled with him, she finds she’s drawn to Reeve for more than just his connection to Amber, despite her growing fear that he may be the enemy. When she’s forced to choose where her loyalty lies, how will she decide between saving Amber and saving her heart?

First Touch messed. with. my. mind. You know how sometimes you read a book and you have no idea HOW the author comes up with the things they write? That was the way I felt as I was reading this book. Laurelin Paige has written a thrilling, addicting, suspenseful novel that I couldn’t put down. It’s unpredictable. Disturbing. Unique. Absolutely fascinating. It’s the kind of book that made my heart AND mind race. I still can’t wrap my head around Emily’s story, but I loved it!

“The problem with men who are actually a threat, though, Emily, is that you don’t ever find out how unsafe they are until it’s too late.”

Emily and Amber were best friends who lived quite the unconventional and disturbing life. But they split ways years ago, and Emily hasn’t heard from Amber since – until now. When Emily receives a voicemail and hears Amber saying their safe code, Emily knows her former best friend is in danger. Amber could be alive or dead, but either way, Emily does whatever she can to find out what happened to her. And the main suspect in Emily’s investigation is the enigmatic, playboy billionaire Reeve Sallis.

I’d do whatever it took to find the truth and get it away from this man. This man who was very much the flame to my moth. Already I feared that finding answers wouldn’t be enough to sever his pull on me.

Reeve, quite frankly, scares the shit out of me. This man is a psycho and a sex god – I loved him and hated him equally. He is dark, powerful, dangerous, alpha, and controlling. Emily sets out to seduce the answers out of him, but she has no idea that she’ll be seduced – consumed – instead. The visceral connection between the two of them is erotic and the chemistry powerful, but when their whole relationship is built on lies and secrets, can they actually have a life together? Or will those secrets and lies – Amber – tear them apart?

Distraction. Comfort. Reason. Preoccupation. He was the source of everything I needed now. The path to closure, an asylum for pain, a place to find truth, a place to hide.
For good or bad, all roads led back to him. Perhaps that what it meant to really be his.

What’s fascinating about these two characters is that they are both master manipulators. So even as I was rooting for Emily and Reeve, I was also biting my nails, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Laurelin Paige did a fantastic job with the suspense in First Touch, because I honestly couldn’t predict anything in this book. I was on the edge of my seat, scared and excited to see what was going to happen next. Everything is just so intense in this novel – the story, the characters, the writing. And that ending! God, I’m dying for the sequel now, because that ending has left me hanging and so ready for more.

This is my first Laurelin Paige book, but I know it will not be my last. If you love books with erotic mystery and suspense, I highly recommend First Touch. It’s going to twist your mind and you won’t be able to put it down!

Break Even by Lisa De Jong

Publication Date: December 27th 2015

My story isn’t a love story … not the typical kind anyway.
As a lawyer, I’m used to discovery, but I never saw this one coming.

Every day, River gives me ten reasons to stay away, and then eleven reasons why I can’t. Our relationship was to remain strictly business, or at least I tried.

Four years of marriage, and everything with Cole has changed. I never knew two people who lived together could be so distant. But I’m not ready to give up on him.

One man wants to break me.
The other is just trying to get even.

Both are lying to me.

People claim each of us has a soul mate who we’re meant to be with. I don’t think that’s true at all. There are multiple people in the world each of us could fall in love with. How well you change together is truly what determines how long you’ll be together.

Oh. My. God. OH MY GOD!!! I honestly don’t know what to say about this book except HOLY. SHIT. If you love twists and turns in your books, you NEED to pick up Break Even. This is my first read by Lisa De Jong and she didn’t disappoint. I read this in one sitting because I HAD to know what was going on – my mind kept racing as I read more and more. This book made me want to scream, it messed with my mind so much. I loved how twisty and thrilling it was!

The one who made me believe in love shouldn’t also be the one who makes me doubt it.

I really don’t want to say anything about the plot, because this is the kind of book that’s best to go in blind. I will say that yes, there is a love triangle, and yes, there is infidelity… but everything happens with GOOD REASON. And honestly, when the truth is revealed, you’ll be feeling so hurt for the heroine because her supposedly perfect life is spiraling and she has no idea how to fix it that you won’t care about the love triangle or infidelity.

He’s a magnet.
I’m a nickel.
He wants me.
I need to feel wanted.
Days of loneliness, and he’s filled each one.

I usually avoid books that have cheating in them, but Break Even had me so curious from the blurb. And now I’m really glad I read it, even though the story took me out of my comfort zone. While I didn’t connect with the Marley, Cole, or River, I was seriously sucked into their story. I loved them and I hated them – they made me feel so much. This is definitely a book that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. If you love books with twists and turns that you don’t see coming, you need to pick up Break Even!

Review: Kulti by Mariana Zapata

Kulti by Mariana Zapata

Kulti by Mariana Zapata
Series: Standalone
Publication Date: March 20th 2015
Links: Ebook • PaperbackAudible • Goodreads

“Trust me, I’ve wanted to punch you in the face a time or five.”

When the man you worshipped as a kid becomes your coach, it’s supposed to be the greatest thing in the world. Keywords: supposed to.

It didn’t take a week for twenty-seven-year-old Sal Casillas to wonder what she’d seen in the international soccer icon—why she’d ever had his posters on her wall, or ever envisioned marrying him and having super-playing soccer babies.

Sal had long ago gotten over the worst non-break-up in the history of imaginary relationships with a man that hadn’t known she’d existed. So she isn’t prepared for this version of Reiner Kulti who shows up to her team’s season: a quiet, reclusive, shadow of the explosive, passionate man he’d once been.

Nothing could have prepared her for the man she got to know.

Or the murderous urges he brought out in her.

“Sal, please don’t make me visit you in jail. Orange isn’t your color.”

This was going to be the longest season of her life.

I’ve found it.

My favorite book of 2015.

I. LOVED. KULTI!!!! It was utter perfection – I loved the romance, the characters, freaking soccer, everything. I finished this huge book in a day, even though it didn’t feel like a long book AT ALL. I could. not. put this book down – the pages just zipped by for me. Sal is the kind of heroine I adore – hilarious, sassy, down-to-earth, relatable… And Kulti is the most lovable jackass there is. I seriously have hearts in my eyes right now, that’s how much I loved these characters and the story. If you haven’t read Kulti yet, READ IT NOW. I’m OBSESSED with this book – Sal and Kulti have taken a hold of my heart and I never want them to let go.

Kulti has got a bit of everything – enemies to friends, friends to lovers, a slow burn romance, a little forbidden romance. It’s a sports romance with a soccer-playing heroine and a retired international soccer icon, now her coach. It’s got characters you can’t help but love. It’s a long book – but I literally loved every page of it. None of the story felt unnecessary, and every single scene only endeared the characters more to my heart. Yes, the romance is slow, so don’t expect any steamy scenes too quickly, but I wouldn’t change a thing about it. The slow pace is the PERFECT pace for Sal and Kulti, and I promise, the wait is so worth it. This book is meaningful, sweet, heartfelt, and so freaking GOOD. I simply loved it.

Sal Casillas has been a fan of – and in love with – Reiner Kulti since she saw him on television for the first time when she was seven years old. The famous German soccer player, also known as ‘The King’, has been a huge part of Sal’s life – he’s the reason she went on to be the best soccer player she could be. Kulti will always remain in her heart… even if he doesn’t know she exists.

I’d gotten over my crush-slash-infatuation when I was seventeen, when I finally accepted the fact that I didn’t have a single shot of ever playing against him—obviously—and… there was no chance in hell that he’d ever be interested in me, the Argentinian-Mexican-American tomboy thirteen years younger than him. There wouldn’t be a marriage in my future or soccer-playing super-babies.
It was the worst non-break-up ever in the history of imaginary relationships with a man who didn’t even know I existed.

So imagine her surprise, and excitement, when Sal hears that her new coach will be none other than Reiner Kulti. Except he’s nothing like she expects – he’s arrogant, stubborn, a terrible coach, and pretty much doesn’t care about anything but himself. But when Sal tells Kulti off in a brilliant, hilarious speech, things start to change, and an unlikely friendship between them forms.

Strong, independent, honest, loyal, Sal is everything I admire in a heroine. She’s an incredible soccer player, but an even better person. She’s also stinkin’ hilarious – I laughed so much while reading this book because of Sal and her family. I LOVE Sal’s father – he’s my favorite character after Sal and Kulti. He’s just so in love with Kulti that he’s so shy around the famous soccer player and doesn’t know what to do around him. Sal and her father also have a wonderful relationship that warmed my heart.

Kulti is just… I can’t even describe my love for this man. The lovable jerks get me every time. He’s a moody, arrogant ass, but Kulti treasures what he has with Sal. As the two of them spend time together outside of practice, you can see how their friendship strengthens into something meaningful and precious to them both. You can tell that Sal’s friendship – that Sal – grows to be the most important thing in the world to Kulti, and he would do anything and everything to protect and preserve it and her. And the best part about Kulti is how much he respects Sal – even though she’s younger than him and not a famous soccer player like him, he treats her as his equal. She is his best friend, someone he’d do anything for.

I had a man I respected that respected me, and he didn’t care if the world knew we meant something to each other. Our friendship hadn’t been given to either one of us, we had worked at it. on top of that, I felt something for him even if he was an egotistical, arrogant, stubborn pain in the ass. He was my egotistical, arrogant, stubborn pain in the ass.

I loved every nuance of this book – the way Sal and Kulti had ridiculous nicknames for each other, the way Sal’s father just might love Kulti more than Sal does, the way Kulti is so grumpy and moody yet totally hilarious. This book held my attention for the 500 or so pages it was – it captured my heart, made me FEEL so much for the characters. If the number of pages is intimidating, just trust me, every page counts in this story. And the romance, god, the romance. What I loved most about the slow burn in Kulti was how much time and effort the author put into building up the heartwarming friendship between Sal and Kulti before there was any romance, because that friendship made the eventual romance so much more meaningful. Mariana Zapata has written one of the best, if not THE best, friends to lovers romance I’ve ever read.

“Every single thing that has ever happened in my life has led me here, Sal. Destiny is a ladder, a series of steps that takes you where you’re supposed to go. I am the man that I am, and I have done the things that I’ve done, to get me to you.”

Hands down, Kulti is the best book I’ve read all year (and of course I’d read it just as the year is ending). It is now one of my favorite books of all-time, I loved it that much. I’m STILL thinking about this book, even though I read it days ago (it didn’t help that I reread it multiple times). I seriously can’t get Kulti out of my mind. THIS is how you write romance. Kulti was everything I never knew I wanted in one. Mariana Zapata, I freaking LOVE you for creating Kulti, for creating some of the best characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. I simply adored this book, this story, these characters, everything about it. It’s the kind of book that will shake up your heart because you care SO MUCH for the characters. I L O V E D this book!!!
