Guest Post, Excerpt & Giveaway: Sharing You by Molly McAdams

Sooo, SHARING YOU by the lovely Molly McAdams has just released! And to celebrate, this week Molly will be sharing guest posts, excerpts, and giveaways! Today, Molly talks about Love at First Sight!

Love at first sight: Urban legend?

Ahh … that wonderful, mysterious thing every woman has dreamt of/wished for since she was a little girl. I believe we can thank Disney for that. But does it actually exist? Sure, we know without a doubt that there is lust/attraction at first sight, but it’s impossible for it not to. You see someone, they’re attractive to you, and instantly your body and mind go into overdrive thinking about a way to introduce yourself … every so slyly, of course! But I’m talking about love. That moment where everything seems to fade away except for the person in your line of sight. That moment when your heart starts pounding in a way you’ve never felt. That moment when you see your future with this person flash before your eyes. Does it happen?

I like to think so.

That happened with my husband, and it also happened for my mom with my dad. I was eighteen when I met my husband at the beach on a Marine Corps base, and I just knew. I told my roommate when we left that afternoon: “I’m going to marry that boy someday.” And I married him a little over a year later. My mom was in high school when she met my dad at a house party, and that night went home to tell her mom: “I met the guy I’m going to marry.” Granted, she was secretly in love with him for years before he realized he was in love with her too, and now they’ve been married for over thirty years.

It just so happened for my mom and me that there was a party or BBQ going on when these encounters happened. (My hubby’s friends were all barbecuing on the beach, but we walked away and spent hours just talking.) So it seems that I’m partial for my characters meeting in these type of settings too. (Hell, apparently Shakespeare was too! Can we say Romeo & Juliet?) There’s something about a party that makes things like this possible. You meet new people, there’s a relaxed atmosphere, and there’s almost an excitement in who you may or may not see—especially the new possibilities! And that opportunity seemed too perfect to pass up for Brody and Kamryn at Kinlee’s BBQ. Even if their situations were different from mine or my mom’s. Even if their love was forbidden. Even if it was the last thing either of them were expecting or even wanted.

Love hits you when you least expect it, and it’s never exactly how we planned it out in our minds—but that’s the beauty of it. The unexpected, the possibilities … all of it is so perfect in it’s own way, just as Brody and Kamryn’s was.

Molly’s Daily Question: Have you ever experienced this not-so-myth called: Love at first sight?

P.S. The day Kamryn and Brody meet, Kamryn has a bunch of her cupcakes with her! (Well, duh, Molly … when doesn’t she?) But if you want a FABULOUS triple chocolate recipe, here you go:

1 pkg. chocolate fudge cake mix
1 pkg. chocolate fudge pudding mix
4 eggs
1-16 oz. container of sour cream
½ cube of melted butter
½ cup of water
½ cup vegetable oil
12 oz. chocolate chips (rub flour over chips so they won’t sink)

Mix everything together except the chocolate chips
Once smooth, add chocolate chips covered in flour, stir in
Pour into greased cupcake pan
Put in pre-heated oven of 350 degrees
Check with toothpick at 20 minutes, if not ready, continue checking every 3 minutes.
(if you want to make as cake, put in bundt pan and bake for 45-50 min)

excerpt

My body jerked awake, and I stilled as I listened for whatever had woken me. Brody was now behind me with his body curled around mine, and the sound of his soft snores was all that met my ears for a few moments. Closing my eyes, I relaxed into the pillow again when I heard the ringing. Moving from Brody’s arms, I glanced around for my phone, but didn’t see it and remembered I’d left it in the bathroom, and this was coming from outside my room. Grabbing for the pants that were on the floor of my hallway, I searched the pockets until I found Brody’s phone, and my body turned to ice when I saw the screen.

“Brody,” I said as I climbed back on the bed and shook his shoulder. “Brody wake up.”

His eyes shot open and moved quickly to the phone I was holding out to him. “What—”

“Olivia is calling you.”

“Fuck,” he whispered, and pinched the bridge of his nose as he turned to his back. Taking the phone from my hand, he cleared his throat a couple times and answered. “Hello?”

“Where the hell are you? Do you know what time it is?”

I didn’t need to be sitting directly next to him to hear her. I’m positive I would’ve been able to hear her shrill voice if I’d been back in the hall.

Glancing at his phone for a second, his aggravated expression never changed as he brought the phone back to his ear. “Yeah, Liv, I got caught up at work.”

“And you couldn’t call to tell me?”

“You said you’d be staying with your parents if you got back from Washington tonight, I didn’t know it would matter to you if I was late or—shit, Liv. Why … fuck, why are you crying?”

“Well, obviously I’m not at my parents’, Brody! I thought something had happened to you, you know, I’m trying to be a good wife here. And you are hours late and don’t even think to—” she cut off on a sob.

Brody’s hand fell over his face, and his head gently shook back and forth. “All right, I’m sorry. You’re right, I should have called you.”

“Come home, please. Please, come home.”

My body locked up when I heard her desperate plea, and I watched as Brody’s hand moved, and he turned his head to look at me. Even in the dark I could see the war he was fighting as he listened to his wife cry on the phone, and watched my every move.

Olivia said something that was now too low and mumbled for me to hear, but Brody’s expression suddenly looked like he was in pain.

“I’m finishing up a report, I’ll be back soon.” Without waiting for her to respond, he ended the call, and reached out for me, but I stopped his hand.

“Stay. Please.”

His jaw clenched shut, and he shook his head once. From the way his eyes studied my face, as if trying to memorize it, I knew he wouldn’t. Twisting away, I got off the bed. I needed to get away from him before I lost it.

“Kamryn, don’t do this, I’m sorry. But you know I—”

“I know. You have to leave, Brody, it’s fine.” I quickly grabbed at my clothes on the floor and dashed into the bathroom.

“Kamryn!”

Once my clothes were on, I pressed my hands to the marble counter as I bit down on the inside of my cheeks to keep from crying. I’d gone into our relationship knowing we wouldn’t be able to have this—have nights together with nothing standing in the way—but after the night we’d just shared, I’d let myself hope.

Having Olivia call had been like a slap to the face. I couldn’t do this, I couldn’t be this person. But as Brody came up behind me and eased his arms around me to press our bodies together, I knew that for this man … I would. I would go through anything if it meant he was mine in the end.

“I’m so sorry,” he said softly before pressing his lips to the sensitive spot behind my ear. “Please don’t be mad, I couldn’t handle it if you were.”

I kept my eyes trained on my hands gripping the countertop and nodded, not trusting my voice anymore.

“One day … one day we won’t have to do this anymore. I’ll come home to you, and get in our bed and never leave. I swear.”

My vision went blurry and I closed my eyes tightly against the tears.

How was it possible that I was already falling so hard for this man, that the thought of him anywhere but beside me had me feeling like I was drowning and unable to pull in the air my body needed to live? I was quickly becoming addicted to him, and the way he made me feel with the smallest of touches. We were dangerous together, but I knew I couldn’t live without him.

“Forgive me,” he pleaded, and suddenly his body and warmth were gone. And as much as my mind and body screamed at me to follow him, to beg him not to leave, I was rooted in place for long minutes until I heard my door shut, and his car start up in the garage.

Taking shaky steps back until I hit a wall, I slid down until I was seated on the cool floor, and the tears I’d been holding back fell mercilessly as desperate sobs worked their way from my chest.

excerpt

When West’s ringtone starts playing in my darkened bedroom, it slips into my subconscious, and I have one of those last-second-before-you-wake-up dreams that’s pure sensation—his skin warm against me everywhere, his weight and smell, the muscles in his thighs against the backs of mine, his hand sliding down my stomach. All of that, slow and melting and West, until the song finally manages to pierce through the haze of my sleep and pinch me awake.

I fight my way from under the sheet, turned on and pissed off because I know how this goes. The rock in my stomach, the day ahead during which I’ll try and fail to shake that flood of sense-memory.

I’m going to have to live through it, and then I’m going to lose it, every good memory I have of West, again, when what I want is to drop back into that dream and live there instead.

It sucks. It sucks, and I’m so distracted by the suckage that I’m picking up the phone and swiping at the screen with my thumb before I completely register what’s going on.

West’s ringtone. West is calling me.

West is calling me at one a.m. when I haven’t heard from him in two and a half months.

If he’s drunk-dialing me, I’m going to fly to Oregon and kick him in the nuts.

That’s what I’m thinking when I put the phone to my ear—but it’s not how I feel. I wish it were. I wish I could say Hello? and hear West say Hey, and not feel . . . I don’t even know. Plugged in. Lit up. Juiced.

I stand in my dark bedroom, aware in every centimeter of my skin that he’s breathing on the other end of the phone, somewhere on the far side of the country.

I have too many memories that start this way. Too many conversations where I told myself I wouldn’t and then I did.

I have this enormous burden of longing and pain, so heavy I can hear it in my voice when I snap, “What do you want?”

“My dad’s dead.”

My head clears in an instant, my attention sharpening to a point.

“He got shot,” West says, “and it’s . . . it’s a fucking mess, Caro. I know this is—I shouldn’t ask you. I can’t ask you, but I just need to tell you because I can’t fucking—” A crackling whooshing noise interrupts him, the kind of interference that fills your whole head with white sound. I just stand there, waiting for his voice to come back.

I’m pushing the phone so hard against my ear, my breath coming shallow and fast, aware with the kind of clarity I’ve only found in moments of crisis that it doesn’t even matter. Whatever he says next. It doesn’t matter.

The thing I never understood before West was that there are some people who, when it comes to them, reason and logic are never going to be in charge.

He left me. He hurt me.

But I stand there in the dark, holding the phone, and I know that in a few hours I’ll be on a plane.

Breathing through my nose, I tried to inhale deeply and let the air out slowly.  It just made my chest hurt.  I gripped Raine tighter and tucked my head into her shoulder.

Soft fingers caressed the back of my neck.

“Bastian?”

I couldn’t answer.

“What’s wrong, baby?”

“Nothing,” I croaked.  The word was utterly ridiculous.

Raine moved her fingers down to my chin and pushed my face to look at her.  I did so reluctantly, and as soon as I met her eyes with mine, some of the tension faded, and I could breathe right again.

“Nightmare?”

I nodded.

“Can you tell me about it?”

I shook my head, and Raine nodded in response.  She moved one of her arms around my shoulder and the other around my head.  She held me against her chest as I tried to regain some semblance of sanity.

Raine knew me so well, it frightened me.  Whereas she used to press for more answers, she was now quick with yes-or-no questions I could answer without speaking, and she knew when to give me a little mental space.  Eventually I’d tell her what the dream was about, and she knew that.

Still, even when I heard her reasons, sometimes it didn’t make the feeling of inadequacy go away.  Maybe it was all from the lack of affection during my fucked up childhood, like Raine thought, or maybe it was because the one man who did offer me any kind of parental connection was also the man who taught me how to be a killer—a damn good one.

Maybe it was because I missed being a killer.

“I can’t do this,” I whispered to Raine as my throat and mouth went dry.  “I want a drink so fucking bad.”

“I know, baby,” she replied, “but you’re stronger than that.”

I closed my eyes a moment and shook my head vigorously.

“Only on the outside.”  I met her eyes again.  “You have more strength inside than I do.”

She moved her fingers into my hair and brushed it away from my sweaty forehead.

“You have more than you know,” she said.  “You work at it every day, and every day you get stronger on the inside too.”

Everything in my head wanted to deny it.  I didn’t feel strong.  I just felt like drinking or fucking.

“I wanna fuck you,” I said.  I saw the little twinge in her eye at the phrase but couldn’t bring myself to regret it.

“Always so crass,” she muttered.

I fought with my head for a way to explain.

“When I’m inside you, everything changes,” I told her.  “It’s not about getting my dick wet; it’s about being so close to you that I can feel your strength in me.  When I feel your arms on my back, and you hold me against you, that’s when I feel strong.”

ARE YOU READY FOR A TWIST?

Who is Iris? Where did she come from? Where has she gone?

Alasdair Masters has more questions than answers about his new, too young obsession, and when he finds out she’s been lying to him, from their first meeting to their last one, he’s more confused than ever about her feelings, her intentions.

And what’s just as confusing are his own feelings. Has he turned something purely physical into something emotional in his own head? Is any of it mutual?

The only thing he doesn’t question is whether he’ll keep going back for more.

DAIR

Me, I was simple. I was order. A very neat, efficient machine that ran on nothing but air.

Me plus anyone else, well, that was another matter. And me plus Iris, that was a monster of a machine, with all gears going at different speeds, some spinning off their hinges, just going mad, but it was a wonderful madness, at full throttle, misfiring in all directions.

It felt wonderful and dreadful.

I was breaking down, and it felt amazing.

And terrifying.

Iris teaser

excerpt

DAIR

TWO MONTHS AFTER THE FALLING OUT

I had a bit of a nervous breakdown after Iris left without a trace.

It was the strangest thing, but I suddenly didn’t like my own company so much.

In fact, I began to hate it, even at home.

I still went to the gym at the exact same time, every single day, in the small hope that she’d show again.  She didn’t, but I kept going, because I wanted to see her again.

She hadn’t been in my life for long, but I missed her.

Being that I couldn’t stand my own company, I began to reconnect with old friends, people I hadn’t talked to since the divorce, the friends I’d chalked up to losses in the breakup; Tammy’s assets when we’d been chopping our combined life in half.

For some reason, they all seemed very happy to hear from me.  I felt like a jerk for going into full hermit mode and attempted to have something of a social life again.

I’d often meet up with another writer friend for coffee or lunch after my workout, telling myself that if I just kept working at it—being a normal person, with normal social habits—it wouldn’t feel so forced.

And it was true.  Two months post Iris, and I was looking forward to having coffee with my friend, Benji.

He was already sitting at a table as I entered the café a few shops down from my gym.

I waved at him, saw he had an extra coffee for me, and bypassed the line to go directly to him.

He slid me the cup as I sat down.

“You make your deadline?” I asked him.  Like me, he was a neurotic, work obsessed writer, and so we always had something to talk about.  It was good.  Distractions were good.  The more the better.  The more plates spinning the better, these days.

He nodded with a grin, pushing his thick glasses up high on his nose, and sweeping his light brown hair away from his face.  He was a good seven years my junior, with a lean, nerdy look that I thought suited him.  He wore it well.  “How about you?  I know you were early on your publisher’s deadline, but how is your indie project coming along?”

“Good.  Good.  My word count is flowing faster than ever.  I should be done in about four weeks.”

He whistled.  “Will you sell it to the publisher, if they decide they like it and make you a good offer?”

I shrugged.  “I doubt it.  This whole project is an experiment for me.  It won’t be much fun if I don’t get to at least see how making seventy percent compares to making, yanno, eight.”

He shook his head, smiling wryly.  “You’re forgetting your advance.  You can’t tell me they don’t give you plenty up front.”

I shrugged again.  “Like I said, this one is an experiment.  I doubt even my publisher can sway me, and it’s not exactly written in the genre I’m known for, so they wouldn’t write me a big check for it, anyway.”

“You’re probably right.”  He sighed.  “I envy you the flexibility to do what you want.  Some of us are still writing just to pay the bills.”

We sipped coffee and talked shop for a bit.  We were just getting ready to leave when he suddenly trailed off mid-sentence, looking at something behind me.

I turned to see what it was, and an electric fire went off in my brain at the sight that met my eyes.

Setting my jaw hard, I turned carefully away.

So the back of that blonde woman in line resembled Iris, so what?

This wasn’t the first time my brain had tricked me into thinking she was somewhere close.

But it was never her.  I’d see some young blonde thing out of the corner of my eye and turn to stare until I met a stranger’s blank stare.

Not today.  Today I was going to ignore the urge to obsess.  It wasn’t her, just some young woman with a great body.  She wasn’t even dressed correctly, wearing a pleated skirt and a belted, collared blouse.

Iris wouldn’t be caught dead in business attire.

“Holy fucking shit, man.  Did you see that chick?” Benji asked, his tone reverent.

My mouth quirked up in a rueful smile.  Even the most civilized men turned into mouth-breathers if a hot enough woman walked into the room.

“I did.”  I took a long sip of coffee, watching Benji, who just kept watching the woman in line, forcing myself, with great effort, to stifle the urge to turn around again.  “Nice ass,” I noted.

“Yes.  But you need to turn around and check out the rest of her.  Huge titties, man.”

I rolled my eyes.  There was a bit of a generation gap between us.  My generation thought shit like that, but then we kept it to ourselves, like grown-ups.

“Big soft tits,” he continued, “in a semi-sheer white blouse.  Fuuuck.  She’s got a tan.  How many articles you think I need to write to bang a chick that out of my league?”

“A lot,” I mused, still staying firmly with my back to the woman in question.

“Like how many is a lot?”

“What do you make?  Like five hundred an article?  I’d say about two thousand of those, minimum.  If she’s as hot as she looked from the back, though, you’d need to be well into the millionaire club before she’d give you the time of day, so more like five thousand articles, realistically.”

His eyes were wide as he finally looked away from the hot chick and back to me.  “Really?  That is fucking depressing, dude.”

I shrugged.  “Yeah.  But the really sad part is you’d have to spend a good chunk of that cash on her, if you wanted her to stay around for any length of time.”

He shook his head.  “I think you’ve gone cynical, after Tammy.”

I couldn’t dispute that.  Not a bit.  “You may be right.  What can I say?  Divorce messes with your head.”  I didn’t bring up Iris.  I hadn’t told him about her.  “Why don’t you go ask her out, if you’re so certain I’m wrong?”

He laughed.  “I didn’t say you were wrong, I said you were cynical, and so am I.  That chick is out of my league, period.  I need more money to bag a woman like that.  Or at the very least, better looks and a bigger dick.  And look at that, fuck, she’s already leaving.  I was hoping she’d sit down to drink her coffee, and let me look at her for a few more minutes.”

“Maybe you were creeping her out.  You’ve barely taken your eyes off her since she walked in the door.”

He didn’t even seem to hear me.  “Oh, no, wait, she’s only going to the bathroom.  I thought it was weird she was leaving without her order.  Did you see her shoes, man?  Those are some ‘fuck-me’ stilettos.  And her hair is in this tight bun, and she’s wearing sexy librarian glasses.  Will you please turn and look when she comes back out?  I will drop the subject if you will just get a better view of her and agree with me that she’s a ten.”

“Nope.  Not doing it.  That poor girl does not need us both creeping out on her.  I’ll take your word for it.”

That seemed to settle the matter.  He dropped it.

His phone rang; he checked the screen and started cursing.  “I’ve got to run.  Same time next week?”

I nodded, and he left.  I didn’t move and still didn’t turn around.  I had that feeling, a tingle on my neck, like I was being watched from behind, and I was again talking myself out of obsessing about Iris.

But burned in my brain was the image of the back of that woman, and in spite of myself, I was comparing.

And a small part of me was enjoying the torture of imagining it could be her, that she would find me again.

Finally, I cracked, turning to look, thinking that the woman must have left, so I should just get it over with, like pulling off a Band-Aid.

And there she was.

There was Iris, standing only feet away, holding a cup of coffee and watching me, her expression very blank.  She was wearing sexy librarian glasses, her hair in a tight bun, just like Benji had said.

And it really was her, in the flesh.

She wore white, and her clothes were fitted enough to show off every lush curve.  Her mouthwatering breasts were clearly outlined, the buttons of her blouse open enough to show an extravagant amount of cleavage.

How had I forgotten just how stunning she was?  How captivating?

Her large breasts were even more exceptional than I remembered, as though I’d dreamt her up as a comic book version of herself.

Iris squared.

The moment our eyes met, she began to move, walking with easy grace to sit across from me.

She looked cold, so icy blonde and beautiful, like some mix of Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly.

Terrible and beautiful.

It felt like fatal voltage to my chest just to look at her like that.

It was Iris, but Iris as a stranger.  No, it was worse than that.  It was like she was a curious, wild, imaginary creature, with the pieces of her just now put together, invented for my eyes, not how I remembered at all, because even when she’d been angry, she had never been cold.

Then she smiled, and it was her again, all traces of the cold stranger gone.

Which one was the real Iris?

“Hello, Dair.”

I swallowed hard and saw her eyes dart to my throat.

“Hello, Iris.”

“God, I missed the sound of your voice.”

“The sound of my voice?” My voice caught on the question awkwardly, breaking slightly on the last word.

She had such a talent for catching me off guard.

“Yes.  You have the best voice, like a stern school teacher.”

My brain short-circuited for a bit before I could respond.  “You say the most outrageous things.”

She laughed, and its tinkling sound felt like velvet across the back of my neck.  “Is that all you have to say to me, after all this time?” she asked quietly.

“I’m sorry for all the things—”

“I don’t want you to take those things back, if you still believe them, and besides, that’s not what I meant.  Don’t you have anything else to say to me?”

I took a few deep breaths.  “Where have you been?  And why are you back now?”

“That’s not what I meant, either.  And I don’t want to talk about that.  Didn’t you miss me?”

She reached a hand across the table, and I found one of mine grasping it, lacing our fingers tightly together.

My eyes squeezed shut.  It felt very good to touch her again, even just her hand.  “Yes, Iris, I missed you very much.”

“There you go.  Was that so hard?  I missed you, too.  You look good.”  She tugged her hand away, and my eyes opened to follow its retreat.

“Why are you dressed like that?”

She looked like she was trying not to smile.  “Like what?”

“Like a professional.  Why are you wearing glasses?  What are you doing?  Where did you go?  Where have you been?”

She glanced around, and the way she did it struck me as more than a little paranoid.  “Want to go for a walk?”

My heart started pounding hard.

I didn’t hesitate.

“Of course I do,” I said, absolutely no thought required.

I’d take a walk with her anytime, anywhere.

She smiled, taking off those sexy glasses.  “Well, then, let’s get out of here.”

excerpt

Finally he pulls away and looks at me again. His eyes are a little watery, like he’s been crying. “Run away with me.” There’s desperation in his eyes, a silent plea.

I bite down on my lip. “What?”

He sits up and traps my face between his hands. “Run away with me, Lolita. We can start over and I’ll keep you safe. Please tell me you trust me enough to run away with me, like you said to me when we were fourteen. God I wish I would have just done it… Things would have been so different if I just done it back then.” He pulls me against him again, embracing me tightly.

I remember the day my mom died, right before I found her in my dad’s arms in the driveway, I’d suggested to Layton that we run away. I’d never liked the world I grew up in and leaving seemed like such a great idea—still does. I just wish I could permanently leave it all behind.

“Where would we go?” I ask with my face tucked against his chest where I can hear his heart thudding almost violently. I think about Dannie and Mary Lou and how I’m just going to disappear, leaving them to wonder what happened to me. Then there’s Nyjah. I don’t know whether he was with Reagan on blackmailing me or not, but I still wish I could say good-bye. I feel guilty about it, but know in my heart that I can’t go back to Glensdale. Maybe one day, if this all ever settles down. One day. I hope. I hope. I hope.

Layton swiftly slants back, looking flabbergasted. “You’re seriously considering it? After everything?”

“You know I’m crazy enough.” I try to make a joke but miss the mark badly—it’s been a long time. Not knowing what else to say, I shrug. “I have to run anyway. Might as well be with someone.” I give him the best smile I can summon, but there’s too much darkness in me at the moment to be happy.

He smiles back, but it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “I know, but I want to make sure.”

I think I’m sure. The last thing I want to do is leave Layton when I just got him back. “Layton, can I ask you a question?”

He nods, this time with confidence. “You can ask me anything.”
