One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Hell. YES! I had high expectations for this, and JLA never disappoints– she wowed me again with White Hot Kiss, the first book in her new sexy series about… gargoyles! How freaking cool is that, right? And, if you haven’t read the prequel novella to WHK, you should get to it! Bitter Sweet Love is a great way to introduce yourself to this new world JLA has created, and plus, you get to see Layla, Roth, and Zayne for the first time in it!

Let me first start off with how much I ADORE this new world JLA has created! I think it’s freaking awesome that she decided to write about gargoyles and demons. And plus… she created ROTH, who makes me swoon SO madly. JLA doesn’t bombard you with the world building (although reading Bitter Sweet Love helps), and the writing is just as incredible as ever. I connected with the main character, hell, all the characters, so well because JLA writes them in such a way that makes them come to life. And yes, I really really wish Roth were real, because that boy… er… demon… is like hot damn.

It’s complicated being the only half demon, half gargoyle for Layla. And the worst thing of all? She can’t kiss anyone–or else she’ll take their soul. For basically all of her life, the Wardens, aka the gargoyles, have been taking care of her, even though most of them would rather see her die. Such a good life, right? Layla was taken in by Zayne’s family and she and Zayne have been inseparable since. She knows nothing about her origin, and every day it kills her to be excluded, to not be a part of a group that she so badly wants to be a part of. The Wardens constantly see her as a danger, and it hurts her that they feel this way after all the help she’s given them in finding and getting rid of demons. But everything changes for Layla once she meets Roth. Because all her inherent beliefs about Wardens being the “good” guys and demons being the “bad” guys go straight down the gutter.

“People with the purest souls are capable of the greatest evils. No one is perfect, no matter what they are or what side they fight for.”

Meeting Roth awakens a whole new side of Layla. She learns more about her world and herself, and she also starts to see that what she felt for Zayne was nothing compared to what she starts to feel for Roth. Because Roth is annoying, hot, and riles her up in so many ways she can’t decide between wanting to punch him or kiss him.

At some point, Roth had gotten hold of my cell and replaced Zayne’s name with Stony and listed his own number under Sexy Beast. What a tool.
I grinned.

I honestly LOVED the relationship between Layla and Roth. There’s definitely some strong chemistry between them, but they eventually just become friends… for the most part. There are some kisses here and there, which Layla can have now because Roth has no soul. Roth. is. freaking. hilarious! He and Layla have the best conversations that would have me giggling and grinning so much. God, I love these two. But then there are the more serious, more intimate moments between them that made me swoon so much. Because truly, underneath that rude, crass exterior, Roth is a huge sweetheart.

“You undo me. You have no idea how you undo me.”

And my favorite quote…. (I seriously went “OH GOD ROTH YOU BREAK MY HEART YOU SWEET, SWEET DEMON” when I read this.)

“I lost myself the moment I found you.”

And hello, action scenes! There’s tons of fun, kickass fight scenes with evil dudes (WHK is very much a good vs. evil book), which I love! There’s never a dull moment in this book–between Layla being her awesome, snarky self, Roth being delicious and sexy and hot and amazing and lovable and… okay, I’ll stop here, and the badass fight scenes, I couldn’t put this book down! Loved reading this book, and I can’t WAIT for Cold Stone Touch! I want more Roth!!!

Excerpt

“I don’t think of Zayne that way!”

She laughed. “What man-parts-loving female in this world doesn’t think of Zayne that way? I can barely keep myself breathing when I see him. All the guys in school have squishy waists. I can tell Zayne doesn’t. He’s the awesome sauce with extra sauce.”

That he was and he so didn’t have a squishy waist, but I tuned Stacey out at that point. I really did need to cram for this test and I also didn’t want my fantasies involving Zayne to occupy my mind right now. Especially after I’d woken up this morning, carefully tucked under the covers. The bed had smelled like him: sandalwood and crisp linen.

“Oh, sweet baby Jesus in a manger,” Stacey murmured.

I clenched my jaw, cupping my hands over my ears.

She jabbed me in the side with her elbow. At this rate I’d be covered in bruises before lunchtime. “Our bio class just got a billion times more interesting. And hotter, lots and lots hotter. Holy mother, I want to have his babies. Not now of course, but definitely later. But I’d like to start practicing soon.”

The cell wall is a thick and rigid layer covering the plasma something, something plant cells…

Stacey stiffened all of a sudden. “Oh my God, he’s coming—”

Composed of fat and sugar—

Something slender and shiny fell from who knew where, landing in the middle of Sam’s notes. Blinking tightly, it took me a couple of seconds to recognize the faded and half peeled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sticker covering the back of the silver cell phone.

My heart slammed against my ribs. Gripping the edges of the notebook, I slowly lifted my gaze. Unnaturally beautiful golden eyes met mine.

“You forgot this last night.”

Excerpt

“You got a visitor, Tess.” He rested his chin atop my head, which caused my pulse to try to outrun my heart. “Two of them to be exact.”

“Okay.”

There was a pause. “Are your eyes closed?”

“No.”

His chin slid off my head and then his chest rumbled as he laughed. “Your eyes are closed.” He laughed again. “Open them up.”

Cursing under my breath, I pried one eye open and then jerked against him. His arm tightened. “Oh wow …”

The black-and-white horse was the closest, standing mere feet away from me. The brown one wasn’t too far, shaking its head and making soft snorts. My eyes were wide as they bounced between the two creatures. “They’re not carnivorous, right? Because at their size, they could eat me.”

Jase laughed deeply as his hand shifted up, resting in the center of my stomach, just below my breasts. “Horses do not eat people, you little idiot.”

I started, eyes narrowing. “There’s always a first.”

The lips pulled back on the black-and-white horse as if it was smirking at me.

“This one right here? Mr. Friendly? Jack calls him Bubba One,” he said in a quiet, calming voice. But air hitched in my throat when his thumb moved in a slow circle over the thin material of my tank top, hitting against the wire in my bra. “And the brown one is Bubba Two.”

Mouth dry, I wetted my lips. “That’s good for remembering names.”

He chuckled as his pinkie and forefinger started to move up and down, reaching my belly button and then sliding back up. It was almost as if he was unaware of what he was doing, or the electrifying response the tiny motions were dragging out of me. “I think so too, but his real name is Lightning.”

Said horse shook his head, tossing the shaggy mane.

“Lightning seems to be a more suitable name,” I admitted, relaxing as the seconds passed. Maybe that was his intention. Distract me with the soft, almost innocent touches. It was working. “What about Bubba Two?

“Ah, the one who is staring at the pail like it’s the holy mecca of grain?” His cheek grazed mine as I laughed. “That’s Thunder. And we’re going to feed them. Together.”

The friction his fingers created with my shirt sent tiny shivers up and down my back.

“With our hands?”

His answering laugh tipped the corners of my lips up. “Yes. With our hands.”

“After checking out the choppers on them, I’m not so sure about that.”

“You’ll be okay.” He slid his hand off my stomach and wrapped it around my wrist.

Slowly, he lifted my hand out in front of me. “Hold still.”

My heart lurched. “Jase—”

Lightning trotted forward and pressed his wet nose against my hand. I cringed, waiting for him to eat my poor fingers. The horse didn’t. Nope. It nudged my hand as it whinnied softly.

He guided my hand up over Lightning’s jaw, all the way to the pointy, twitchy ears. “See?” he murmured. “That’s not too bad, is it?”

I shook my head as my fingers curled along the soft coat. Lightning seemed to anticipate the direction of the petting, pressing his long head against my hand as my fingers tangled in his mane. It wasn’t bad at all.

Jase shifted behind me, and in an instant all thoughts of the horses evaporated. His hips lined up against my backside, and I bit down on my lower lip as I focused on the white splotch covering Lightning’s muzzle.

I could feel him—feel Jase. And there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that he was affected by how close we were standing. That knowledge and the hard length of him left me dizzy, just like it had done that Saturday night. An all too warm flush spread down my neck. In the back of my head, I was rationalizing his physical reaction. He was a guy. Our bodies were pressed together. If a wind blew on a guy’s private area, they got hard. So I should just ignore it, but my body was so not on board with my head. My body was operating on a different playing field. An ache centered low in my stomach. A sharp and sweet yearning raced through my veins.

“Not so scary, right?” His voice was deeper, richer. “They’re like dogs. Well, like a dog  that can carry around two hundred pounds, if not more.” Hand sliding off mine, he stepped back, and the sudden emptiness of his body was like a cold shock. “Trust me.”

Then he smacked my ass.

Teresa Hamilton is having a rough year—she’s in love with her big brother’s best friend, but he hasn’t spoken to her since they shared a truly amazing, mind-blowing, change-your-life kiss. She got out of a terrible relationship. And now an injury is threatening to end her dance career for good. It’s time for Plan B – college. And maybe a chance to convince Jase that what they have together is real.

Jase Winstead has a huge secret that he’s not telling anyone. Especially not his best friend’s incredibly beautiful sister. Even though he and Teresa shared the hottest kiss of his life, he knows that his responsibilities must take priority. He certainly doesn’t have time for a relationship. But it doesn’t help that all he can think about kissing the one girl who could ruin everything for him.

As they’re thrown together more and more, Jase and Tess can’t keep denying their feelings for each other. But a familiar danger looms and tragedy strikes. As the campus recovers, the star-crossed couple must decide what they’re willing to risk to be together, and what they’re willing to lose if they’re not…

OH MY–JASE!!! I totally fell for this sweet, sexy boy. Sigh, my list of book boyfriends just seems to get longer and longer… But who cares, right? 😉

JLA delivers another captivating book in her Wait for You series that engrossed me and made me fall head over heels in love with the characters and story. If you’re a fan of JLA, you won’t be disappointed! It’s got her usual fantastic writing, a snarky, lovable heroine, a and swoony hero with gorgeous gray eyes and is just all around a good guy. Because sometimes you just want to read about the good guy rather than the bad boy.

Jase Winstead is the best friend of Cam (from Wait for You). To be honest, I wasn’t really too into Jase while reading Wait for You. It was Ollie (Cam’s other friend) who I REALLY wanted to read about, but did I even care about Ollie anymore while reading Be with Me? NO. NOPE. NOPE. It was JASE that had my whole attention from start to finish in Be with Me.

“You have no idea what you make me want,” he said, his lips brushing my cheek, sending shivers down my spine. “You have no fucking clue, Tess.”

Teresa Hamilton is Cam’s little sister, and in Wait for You, we know about her abusive ex-boyfriend, and how Cam beat the ever-loving crap out of him. Now, Teresa is in college with an injured, healing knee that prevents her from dancing, which is her life. Teresa has been dealt a crappy hand in life, but she’s still standing strong, and I loved that about her. She doesn’t take crap from anyone, least of all Jase, who wants to pretend that they don’t have something going on between them. Teresa is a fierce, stubborn, snarky, hilarious girl, and I was totally rooting for her throughout the whole book.

Okay, let me just say that Be with Me is the PERFECT book for me. It’s JLA for crying out loud (if you haven’t read any of her books, you should!), and it’s got one of my favorite romance tropes ever! It’s the best friend’s little sister/older brother’s best friend trope, and I was given exactly what I wanted. There was a tad of the forbidden, because Cam will totally flip his shit if he ever finds out about Teresa and Jase, and there was the angst and frustration that comes with this trope. Jase tries to push Teresa, or Tess, as only he calls her, away. Cam is one of the reasons why, but there’s a HUGE plot twist (that I did see coming, but still) that is the main reason for Jase not wanting to get into a relationship with Teresa.

But… Jase can’t seem to stay away from Tess. He can’t get their kiss out his his mind, and here begins the back and forth thing for Jase. It got exciting at some points (like holy hotness, I was totally fanning myself!), but later on it did get slightly tedious. I just really wanted Jase to make up his mind! And poor Teresa–she gets hurt over and over, but she finally finds the strength to say when enough is enough.

There’s the typical I want you but I can’t have you from Jase, but I still loved him. He has his sweet moments and his sucky moments, but overall, he and Teresa make a great couple. And there was a perfect amount of angst! Some scenes between them made my heart flutter or my stomach drop. I couldn’t put this book down–I finished at 2 in the morning! I loved seeing Cam and Avery and their friends again! There are some new characters introduced, like Teresa’s roommate Debbie, her friend Calla (who is getting her story next in Stay with Me!), and Jase’s parents and little brother Jack. There is some intense drama that has to do with Debbie and her abusive boyfriend, and JLA does a good job of mixing that with Teresa and Jase’s love story.

“I want this,” he said, sliding his hands down my sides. He gripped my hips. “I want you always.”
I looped my arms around his neck. “I want you.”
Jase made a deep sound in the back of his throat. “I could almost live on hearing those words.”

I had a wonderful time reading Be with Me. It was gripping and emotional and intense, and I can’t wait for more from this series! I highly recommend it!
