Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.

His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.

Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?

I’ve kind of adored Penny Reid ever since reading her Elements of Chemistry series (one of my favorites of the year!). Her stories are just so compelling yet so down-to-earth – I love them! Truth or Beard was a highly anticipated read for me (because, hello, BEARDS!!!!) and Penny Reid didn’t let me down. Truth or Beard is a fun, sexy, hilarious read with an amazing cast of characters (those Winston brothers will be the death of me) and I can’t wait for more!

Jessica James has always had a crush on the friendlier, more charming of the Winston twins. When she was a girl, she had hearts in her eyes for Beau, all while saving her glares for the broodier, more annoying twin, Duane. But of course, Duane, in that classic way of pulling on the pigtails of your crush, has always loved Jessica James. But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica questions her true feelings for Duane and whether or not she’s had a crush on the wrong Winston twin all along.

I was always running after her, but this time I wasn’t going to let her get away.

I adored Jessica and Duane. They were characters that felt so real to me. I felt for Jessica and her dreams of traveling the world. She has wanderlust, and she’s saving up for a few years until she can leave her small town and explore the world. Duane, even knowing the limited time he has with Jessica before she leaves, still decides to pursue the girl he’s loved his whole life. He keeps his heart guarded though, so that when the time comes for Jessica to leave, he won’t be left with a broken heart. But the two fall fast and hard for one another as they date and spend time together (kissing and doing other stuff…), so how can the two of them possibly continue their relationship when one is meant to travel the world and the other has an auto shop he has obligations to take care of?

Jessica wasn’t going to break my heart.
I was going to break hers.

Duane and Jessica have a time limit to their relationship, but that doesn’t stop them from steaming it up in the time they have together. They have some seriously sexy times that had me grinning and fanning myself. Duane is a hottie with a beard! BUT, he also says some awesomely sweet, amazing things to Jessica that had my heart swooning – Duane is honestly the perfect package!

“You’re a siren who doesn’t need to sing.”

Oh! Did I mention that this book is also so freaking hilarious? I was laughing so much while reading, most especially because of the Winston brothers. CLETUS! Oh my, Cletus is one special Winston brother. He’s the quirky, dorky nerd and so lovable – I’m keeping an eye out for his book. In addition to Duane, Beau, and Cletus, there’s also Jethro, Billy, and Roscoe. Six hot bearded brothers = book boyfriend heaven!

I’d once overheard my daddy tell my momma that the six Winston boys had inherited their father’s ability to charm snakes, the IRS, and women.

What brought this book down, though, and why I can’t give Truth or Beard five awesome hearts was because the whole other subplot about the local motorcycle club. The brothers have drama with some bikers that puts them and their loved ones in danger. This part of the book felt weak though, and I just wasn’t that into it. I felt kind of just ‘eh’ about it – it wasn’t badly written or anything, but it just didn’t get my heart my heart racing as much as I wanted it to.

In spite of weak biker subplot, Truth or Beard is still a fantastic read. You get to swoon over six sexy, bearded brothers, so what’s not to love? Of course, I can’t gloss over Penny’s fantastic writing, with her intelligent prose and witty dialogue. Her books are always described as ‘smart’ and I can’t argue with that. Overall, Truth or Beard was a book that was SO much fun to read. It made me laugh, swoon, ache – it’s the type of book that wrings emotions out of you, and I highly recommend it.

Manhattan apartment.
Super-hot ex-boyfriend.
…What’s the worst that could happen?

It’s been nine months since Kaitlyn Parker has seen or heard from Martin Sandeke—nine months and five stages of matter. She’s lived through the worst of first-love heartbreak, and is most certainly stronger (and less likely to hide in science cabinets) than ever before.

But now Martin is back. And he wants to be friends. But he’s sending mixed signals to the Bunsen burner in Kaitlyn’s pants.

Will Martin re-capture Kaitlyn’s heart? Can Kaitlyn and Martin ever be just friends? Or, despite an abundance of chemistry, are some bonds just too unstable to endure?

Oh my god. I’m so freaking in love with this series, and I’m incredibly sad that this is Martin and Katy’s last book. But what a fantastic ending to a series I absolutely adore! I’m going to miss Kaitlyn and Martin – these are two characters who have completely stolen my heart, and I never want it back. Penny Reid is a goddess for creating these two wonderful, amazing characters. I never wanted their story to end, but the way it did… I couldn’t have imagine it better!

For those who haven’t read the series yet, I want to include as little spoilers as possible. So Capture… it starts off nine months after that god-awful cliffhanger from Heat. Things are completely different for Katy and Martin and their relationship. They both have been moving forward in their professional lives, but regarding their relationship? There’s still work to be done.

I love Katy. And Martin. And Katy and Martin together. They are honestly perfect in their flawed, intelligent, humorous ways. They’re the kind of characters who I want to hug and smoosh to my chest and never let go, because they are just so real in that honest, intelligent way.

“Thank you, Martin. Thank you for finding me in that chemistry closet and seeing me in the first place. Thank you for helping me see myself.”

Katy is a heroine I adored – she may have been frustrating at times, but it was with good reason. I loved being in her head and I loved her quirkiness and awkwardness. And Martin. Holy mackeral, this boy, this man. He’s certainly grown up in Capture – he’s now so much more mature and less quick to reach his temper. But of course, he’s still sexy as hell. The things he says and does make my heart swoon and pound. I’m so in love with him! He’s been a book boyfriend of mine since he first appeared in Attraction

“I don’t want a beautiful week with you. I want a beautiful lifetime.”

Basically, I loved this book. A few frustrations, some miscommunications aside, this book was perfect. Buuut I can’t give this a full 5 heart rating because I just wasn’t as completely OBSESSED with this final book as much as I was with the first book. Still, don’t let that deter you from reading this book, or this series. Penny Reid has written a phenomenal series. I absolutely adore her writing and can’t wait to read her other books. If you haven’t read the Elements of Chemistry series, I recommend you start it ASAP! It seriously is one of the best written series I’ve ever read. It’s certainly become one of my favorite series of all time!

Maybe love, at its essence, is being a mirror for another person–for the good parts and the bad. Perhaps love is simply finding that one person who sees you clearly, cares for you deeply, challenges you and supports you, and subsequently helps you see and be your true self.
Love, I decided, is being a sidekick.

Four days left.
Private beach (…and boat).
Not so invisible girl.
And maybe less of a jerk-faced bully than originally thought.
What’s the worst (or the best) that could happen?

Kaitlyn is finding life outside of the science cabinet of obscurity to be quite illuminating …and so are her pants.
When things heat up between Kaitlyn Parker and Martin—previously known as the jerk-faced bully—Sandeke, she places her trust in the one person she never thought capable of earning it, let alone keeping it safe. Fortunately or unfortunately for Kaitlyn, where she gives her trust she can’t help but also give her heart.

But how will the world beyond the sanctuary of their newfound connection react to their relationship? Soon senators, chinless billionaires, and elements beyond Martin and Kaitlyn’s control want to weigh in on the young couple’s future.

Navigating the chaotic inferno of new love might be more than Kaitlyn bargained for, and much, much more than her trust—or her heart—can handle.

WOW. Wowowow!!!! I freaking loooove Kaitlyn and Martin! Penny Reid blew me away AGAIN with this second installment of the Elements of Chemistry series. Heat was so deliciously hot and sexy… It’s title is very apt for the stuff that goes on between Kaitlyn and Martin in this book. I was a little disappointed how there wasn’t as much heat as I wanted in the first book… but I should’ve known I spoke too soon, because ALL that sexiness goes down in Heat. And while I loved the hot and heavy stuff, what shines in this novel is the incredible character development and relationship growth for Kaitlyn and Martin. Penny Reid is a fantastic writer who’s able to capture the wonder and passion of true love, as well as its hardships and downfalls.

“Maybe you’re right, maybe I don’t know how to treat people. But I meant it when I said that I… fucking hell, I want you. I like you. I’m all in. I’m not a liar and I’m doing my best here. You need to meet me part way.”

I loved getting to know more about Kaitlyn and Martin and getting to see how their relationship expanded and developed. These two are meant to be together, and they’re trying to find a way to make their relationship work and survive once they’re back in the real world. The chemistry amps up in Heat, but so do the frustrations. Kaitlyn and Martin are both highly intelligent people, but they’re not perfect. Despite their flaws, I still loved these two characters. I’m a bit addicted to them and their story. They have so many beautiful, tender, sweet moments that it’s hard not to fall in love with them.

“I don’t think you understand how badly I want you.”

I was utterly swept away by this book. Falling in love is a completely new concept for Kaitlyn and Martin and being in love changes how they view themselves and each other. Kaitlyn has always been a cautious person, guarding her heart, but with Martin, she’s able to open up and trust another person with her heart. Martin is completely head-over-heels in love with Kaitlyn and willing to do almost anything for her, when in the past he was very much a selfish person. Their romance is one that is unique, heartfelt, honest, and real.

“Why do people care about each other? What is attraction? I can’t give you a list of reasons why I react to you like I do. This isn’t an equation to balance. You’re the one I’m always thinking about. It’s you. It just is.”

Both Kaitlyn and Martin were a little frustrating in this book, so that’s why I can’t give a full 5-heart rating. Still, if you loved Attraction, you are going to LOVE Heat. Penny Reid just continues to amaze me with the incredible amount care she puts in the depth and growth in her characters. This book – this series – is well-written, witty, and so much fun to read.

Jerk-faced bully.
What’s the worst that could happen?

Kaitlyn Parker has no problem being the invisible girl, which is why she finds herself hiding in various cabinets and closets all over her college campus. Despite her best efforts, she can’t escape the notice of Martin Sandeke—bad boy, jerkface bully, and the universe’s hottest, wealthiest, and most unobtainable bachelor—who also happens to be Kaitlyn’s chemistry lab partner.

Kaitlyn might be the only girl who isn’t interested in exploiting his stunning rower’s build, chiseled features, and family’s billionaire fortune. Kaitlyn wants Martin for his brain, specifically to tabulate findings of trace elements in surface water.

When Kaitlyn saves Martin from a nefarious plot, Martin uses the opportunity to push Kaitlyn out of her comfort zone: spring break, one week, house parties, bathing suits, and suntan lotion. Can she overcome her aversion to being noticed? Will he be able grow beyond his self-centered nature? Or, despite their obvious chemistry, will Martin be the one to drive Kaitlyn into the science cabinet of obscurity for good?

Oh my gosh… I freaking. LOVED. This. Book. I’ve never read anything by Penny Reid before, but now… I think I’m going to go gorge myself on all of her books! I loved the writing in this one… and don’t even get me started on the humor – God, I just loved everything about Attraction! It’s a witty, hilarious book with endearing characters I grew to love so much. As soon as I started reading this, I couldn’t put it down – and I couldn’t stop laughing either! I simply adored Attraction. It’s now one of my TOP reads of the year so far!

Kaitlyn Parker and Martin Sandeke are chemistry lab partners. Kaitlyn’s an adorable nerd while Martin is their university’s rowing captain – as well as the school’s hottest, richest, most eligible bachelor. They couldn’t be more different… but it turns out they’re absolutely PERFECT together. That is, when they actually get together. Kaitlyn doesn’t think Martin has even noticed her at all over the course of the school year, but when circumstances put them together outside of the chem lab, it turns out they have a wicked chemistry (hehe) together. And Martin’s been wanting Kaitlyn for a while.

“Haven’t you ever wondered why I come on Fridays?” His fingers curled around my neck and his thumb traced circles along the line of my collarbone. He encouraged my head to tip backward.
“So that we can get a jump start on the weekly assignment?”
He shook his head. “You.”

Kaitlyn is rightfully worried about this playboy and his intentions. But she can’t ignore how her body reacts to him, and she agrees to spend a week with him (along with her best friend and Martin’s rowing teammates) on a private beach to see if what they have together is worth pursuing.

“There is nothing temporary about how I want you.”

My favorite thing about Attraction is how incredible a heroine Kaitlyn is. Penny Reid wrote her in such a dorky, quirky, hilarious, relatable way that I couldn’t help but love her! She felt real and genuine, and I adored her. She’s a very intellectual person, but being with Martin brings out a sensual side of her she never knew existed. I loved the way she talked and thought, even when she was being over-the-top. Kaitlyn was just so much FUN to read! Penny Reid did a fantastic job in creating such a wonderful character like her!

Oh, Martin. How I love thee. At first, not much is known about Martin other than his altheticism, his wealth, and his playboy ways, buuuut I fell in love with him the second he appeared in this book. He’s sexy, domineering, and gives off such a powerful presence, but he’s also so tender and sweet with Kaitlyn. The way he cares for and wants Kaitlyn is unlike anything he’s ever felt, and this comes across so clearly in his actions and words. I mean, he’s still got to prove to Kaitlyn that he’s in this for the long run, but the ways he goes about proving it will make your heart melt and swoon. And did I mention how SEXY Martin is!? The chemistry and tension in this book is off the charts. They way Martin shows Kaitlyn how much he wants her is just too hot for words. Just… hot. damn.

I loved this book. I loved getting to know Kaitlyn and Martin, and I loved reading how they get to know each other. They are so perfect for each other, and it’s so easy to see that they belong together. I’ve already reread this book countless times, that’s how much I loved Attraction. I wish I had all of the Elements of Chemistry books to read ASAP – I honestly can’t get enough of these two fantastic characters! And I wish I read Penny Reid sooner! I’ll definitely be reading more of her other books, because her writing is just fantastic.

LADIES AND GENTS! I have an announcement!

You know that guy I featured on my blog a few months ago? The really, really hot Irish rugby player who plays the position of ‘hooker’ in the RLI (Rugby League International)? The one with the questionable fashion choices leading me to ask whether he was the lovechild of a leprechaun and a hobbit? The one with the anger management issues and the body of a gladiator and the face of a movie star? Ronan Fitzpatrick? Yeah, that guy.

Well, I have a confession to make…

THE HERMIT

Annie Catrel, social media expert extraordinaire at Davidson & Croft Media and clandestine celebrity blogger, can make anyone shine in the court of public opinion. She is the Socialmedialite, anonymous creator of New York’s Finest and the internet’s darling. Virtual reality is Annie’s forte, but actual reality? Not so much.

THE HOOKER

Ronan Fitzpatrick, aka the best hooker the world of rugby has seen in decades, despises the media—social or otherwise. The press has spun a web of lies depicting him as rugby’s wild and reckless bad boy.

Suspended from his team, Ronan has come to Manhattan to escape the drama, lay low, fly under the radar. Only, Ronan isn’t easy to overlook, and he can’t escape the notice of the Socialmedialite…

THE PLAN

When Ronan is sent to Davidson & Croft Media to reshape his public image, he never expects to cross paths with shy but beautiful Annie, nor does he expect his fierce attraction to her. He couldn’t be happier when her boss suggests pairing them together.

What lengths will Annie take to keep her virtual identity concealed? And what happens when the hooker discovers who the hermit really is?

The Hooker and the Hermit is a collaboration between authors L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid, is a full length 100k word novel, and is a standalone.
