In a family of cold-hearted black sheep,
I, Axel Rutherford, am the blackest.
My father has hated me since the day I was born. The feeling was mutual. In the shady underworld that was my legacy, Cleo McCarthy became my light. She was beautiful, passionate, and my whole world. So naturally my father had to destroy us. First he sent me away. Next he claimed Cleo as his own. But now I’ve returned, and nothing will stop me from taking back everything that is rightfully mine.

He was the love of my life – when my life was still my own.
We were young enough to believe we would last forever, Axel and I. But neither of us realized how cruel life – and our families – could be. Now I’m trapped in a gilded cage: desired by Axel, who must never know the full truth, and controlled by his father, who would sooner see me dead than free. And I wouldn’t even care, except that it’s no longer only my life at stake.

I will admit that I was NOT a fan of the first Dark Desires book, but I had to take a chance on this second book because of the insanely intriguing blurb. Read that blurb for Black Sheep and tell me it doesn’t hook you in! Plus, I am the biggest sucker for second chance romances. Black Sheep had all the makings for a fantastic read, despite my hesitancy because of the first book… and it freaking blew my mind. I LOVED this book. I picked it up one day and literally couldn’t. put. it. down. It was a crazy, intense, angsty read, a second chance romance between lovers turned enemies, with an obsessed alpha hero – how could I not enjoy it?

In a family of cold-hearted black sheep, I, Axel Rutherford, am the blackest. Abundantly despised by my three brothers, actively hated by my father. She was the golden princess. Put on earth to test every single one of my hardened edges. And I happily burned away every last one for her.

Cleo McCarthy and Axel Rutherford were childhood sweethearts and the love of each other’s lives… until they weren’t. Axel worshipped the ground that his princess walked on and vowed to do everything he could to protect her and create a new life for themselves outside of the mafia world. But then heartbreak came, each thinking that the other betrayed them in the worst way possible, which tore them apart and turned that love to hate.

Now, Axel is on a vengeance, working his way toward his goal of making his father, the leader of the mafia empire, pay. Which means he can’t avoid the love of his life, but he won’t let anything stand in the way of getting revenge, especially the woman who betrayed him. Cleo can’t even recognize the boy who owned her heart in the man he is today. He’s become hardened and more powerful, but even he can’t break the hold Axel’s father has on Cleo. Or can he?

She never needed a gentle knight in shining armor. So I become her marauder.

No matter how much they want to hate each other, there is no denying the fierce lust Axel and Cleo still have as soon as they’re in a room together. I LOVED this love-hate chemistry Zara Cox created, how twisted yet sexy as hell it was. Axel is pure alpha-male, hell bent on having everything: his revenge and the girl. And it’s so obvious that no matter how much hate they feel, it can’t be masked by the all-consuming love that never truly went away.

The writing in Black Sheep is cleaned up so much better than in Beautiful Liar (or back when I read it, I, Porn Star). I’m not sure if its due to the author or a new editor, but it was a stunning read. The story had me hooked, the writing kept me reading, and the characters made me fall in love. If you love addicting second chance romances that turn a little dark, I highly recommend Black Sheep. Now I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

I trust no one. But like I do with Quinn Blackwood, the Black Widow and I share a special bond. Not one I would swear life or death on by a long shot. But there’s an…understanding. She’s the only one who’s been allowed into my special room, the only one who knows the ingredients of my sweet poison. The only one who’s seen what this room does to me. The longest I’ve been able to withstand is five hours.

Her concern is warranted.

I see her swallow before she reaches into her pocket. The small remote is directly linked to the chains. She sets the time but hesitates before pressing the requisite button.

Boldly she steps up to me, and she slides her hands through the hair at my nape. I jerk away but cannot escape her touch because of the cuffs. She stops, staring down at me with narrowed eyes.

I’m on the edge. Hell, who the fuck am I kidding? I was born on the edge. But tonight I’m a whisper away from annihilation and we both know it.

“Are you sure about this?”

“Fuck no. Hell yes.”

She opens her mouth.

“No,” I preempt her.

“I don’t have to stay here with you, but I can be outside.”

“No. Press the button. Don’t make me repeat myself.”

“Axel…”

I close my eyes and shudder as my fists ball. I want to hear my name, but I don’t want the voice to be The Black Widow’s. There’s only one voice I want to hear right now. One face I want to see. Cleo’s.

“Do it and leave. Now.”

“I will, but at least let me come back and check on you—”

“Say another word and I’ll fire you.”

Her eyes harden to ice chips. “Fuck you. Have your six hours if you want. But I’m coming back in three hours to check on you. Fire me then if you want.”

With a defiant flick of her wrist, she sets the timer down between my feet, within touching distance.

The moment her back is turned, I kick the remote. It bounces against the last step and skids sideways halfway across the room. She hesitates, her back stiff, but she doesn’t turn back around. In silence, she leaves.

The moment the door shuts, twenty projectors on the dark gray walls flicker to life. Large, small, and in-between, they take up every inch of the circular wall. If space allowed I would have had more screens put in, but I work with what I have.

Each one is set on a half-hour loop at full volume with a different video. With barely an inch between them, they could be one jumbled-up picture but I know each screen like I know the length of my cock.

I take a deep breath as the first reel plays on the middle screen. The chair moves, the wheels beneath the floor spinning it slowly around.

Fading sunlight dapples over a lake before the camera swings to the figure in the tiny white bikini fleeing a large wave.

The wave catches her, splashes up to mid-thigh. She shrieks. “Omigod, you’re such a liar. The water is collllldd—What are you doing?”

“What does it look like?”

She approaches. Her hands come up to block the lens. “Stop filming me. I look fat.”

A different set of hands reaches out to grasp hers, gently nudging hers aside. “You don’t look fat, Cleo. You’re perfect.”

Feminine hands curl around a masculine one. Together they slowly lower until long-lashed, deep blue knowing eyes stare into the camera. “You’re only saying that because you’re in love with me.” Sultry words whispered from between kiss-swollen lips.

“Yes, I’m saying that because I’m in love with you.” Gruff, hopelessly young, newly broken voice, thick with seething emotion. “I’m also saying it because I have fucking eyes in my fucking head.”

A naughty, goes-straight-to-an-eager-cock giggle. “You’re so bad swearing all the time. Daddy says he’ll paddle my behind if he catches me swearing.”

A wobble of the camera before it steadies. “If he lays a fucking hand on you, I’ll tear his fucking head off.” A voice no longer gruff, hard with rigid purpose. Harsh breathing. “I mean it, Cleo. I see so much as a scratch on you, someone will fucking die.”

A gasp. “You can’t say things like that!”

“I can. I fucking am. Because you belong to me. I don’t care who created you. You are mine. No one else is fucking allowed to touch you. No one is allowed to take you away from me, do you hear me?”

A bite of her lip as her nostrils flutter in a shaky inhale. “You’re scaring me.”

Deep, harsh breath. “Am I? Really? Tell the truth. Are you scared, Cleo?” Camera poised with intent, recording every flutter of her lashes.

A pause. A firming of plump lips. Then a shake of the head. Thick, vibrant locks frame her stunning face.

“Say it. I want to hear you say how it makes you feel when I say this to you.”

“It…it excites me.”

“That I claim you as mine?”

A shy nod.

“What else excites you?”

A flick of her gaze between the lens and the face behind it. “Come on. I can’t say it on camera.” She reaches out.

The camera angles away from her but remains on her. Focused. Rabid. “Tell me.” The voice that will one day command hell itself.

“It excites me when you say that you’ll do…all of that for me.”

“All of what?”

“That you’ll…tear his head off.”

“I fucking will.” A solemn promise. A brief pause. “You think I’m a sick psycho?”

“I think you’re…you’re…”

“What?”

“I think you’re effing amazing.”

Effing?”

Pink color stains her cheeks. “Don’t tease me.”

“I won’t if you say the word. The actual word, Cleo.”

“I won’t.”

“Right. Then I’m not as amazing as you want me to think, am I?”

Blue eyes, opened wide. “You are.”

“Then say it. You’re not going to burn for it. It’s just a word.”

“I hate you when you’re like this.”

“You don’t hate me, but fine. Don’t say it.”

The camera swings out to the lake, to the setting sun that’s almost swallowed up by the orange water.

Release Day Review: Devil’s Cut by J.R. Ward

Devil’s Cut by J.R. Ward
Series: The Bourbon Kings #3 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: August 1st 2017
Links: Ebook • Hardcover • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

In #1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward’s thrilling finale to her Bourbon Kings series, the Bradford family dynasty teeters on the edge of collapse after the murder of their patriarch—and a shocking arrest.

At first, the death of William Baldwine, the head of the Bradford family, was ruled a suicide. But then his eldest son and sworn enemy, Edward, came forward and confessed to what was, in fact, a murder. Now in police custody, Edward mourns not the disintegration of his family or his loss of freedom . . . but the woman he left behind. His love, Sutton Smythe, is the only person he has ever truly cared about, but as she is the CEO of the Bradford Bourbon Company’s biggest competitor, any relationship between them is impossible. And then there’s the reality of the jail time that Edward is facing.

Lane Baldwine was supposed to remain in his role of playboy, forever in his big brother Edward’s shadow. Instead he has become the new head of the family and the company. Convinced that Edward is covering for someone else, Lane and his true love, Lizzie King, go on the trail of a killer—only to discover a secret that is as devastating as it is game-changing.

As Lane rushes to discover the truth, and Sutton finds herself irresistibly drawn to Edward in spite of his circumstances, the lives of everyone at Easterly will never be the same again. For some, this is good; for others, it could be a tragedy beyond imagining. Only one thing is for certain: Love survives all things. Even murder.

Devil’s Cut is without doubt my favorite of the Bourbon Kings series. I’ve struggled with the previous two books, mainly because of how long and drawn out the story is, but everything finally comes together in this masterpiece of an ending. I loved every part of this conclusion – there was never a dull moment, and I actually liked the characters by the end. For those of you who have been eagerly waiting to see just how the Baldwine children and their glorious fortune, estate, and company end up, along with who gets together with who (like I did), then you absolutely must read this epic finale!

Picking up right where The Angels’ Share left off, the death of William Baldwine, former CEO of Bradford Bourbon Company and father of Edward (the eldest), Max (the black sheep), Lane (the reformed playboy), and Gin (the only daughter), has been changed from being one of suicide to one of murder. Edward Baldwine confesses to killing his father, the man who hated his existence from the moment he was born and had his son kidnapped, tortured, and almost killed. Edward certainly had motive to kill William, right? But with secrets slowly being revealed and revelations being uncovered, it remains uncertain if Edward was the killer. And if he’s not, who is he protecting?

I don’t want to mention much about Edward and his love, Sutton, because spoilers, but I do want to say how much I adore their Romeo-and-Juliet-esque love story. As the heads of rival bourbon-making companies, theirs was a star-crossed love that could have been… but Edward returned from his almost-death broken. Now, with him in jail, is it possible for these two star-crossed lovers to have their HEA?

Lane has stepped up in his role of being the head of the Bradford household, trying to keep his family together and regain back their assets that his father embezzled away. With his momma, Miss Aurora, in the hospital dying of cancer, one brother in jail, an almost ex-wife pregnant with his dead father’s child, and virtually no money to support the estate, Lane is at the end of his rope. The one constant in his life is Lizzie, Easterly’s horticulturalist, the love of his life, who is sick of all the drama but there to support him no matter what. I was so thankful for Lane and Lizzie – they’ve been a constant for each other and for the series. I could always count on them to NOT create any drama between themselves, unlike all the other couples in the series. I love Lane and Lizzie so much!

Gin has married the abusive Richard Pford – but she’s no longer the dramatic, conniving, manipulate woman she was in the beginning of the series. With the loss of the Bradford fortune, she’s at a loss – is she anything without her money? She too, steps up to the plate by cutting out the drama with Samuel T., the love of her life. She will always love him, but her daughter, their daughter, comes first for her now. She endures Richard’s abuse so that she can provide Amelia with a better childhood than she had up until that point. I ended up completely loving Gin and the transformation she experiences throughout the series. I was rooting for her with not only Samuel T., but also her daughter. Their relationship is definitely the most addictive for me and was one of the main reasons why I kept reading these books.

With Edward in jail and the black sheep of the family back in town, there seems like no end to the mess that is the Baldwine childrens’ lives. I kept thinking, will any of them ever get a happy ending? But if there’s one thing I learned, it’s that I should always trust J.R. Ward because she’ll always do right by the end. The conclusion to the series was exactly what I was hoping for – we get a solid finish for every one of the characters and couples (well, most couples). I do admit I had to skim some parts that seemed to drag, but otherwise, I enjoyed this book immensely. I almost wish we could see more into the Balwine’s lives, but I wouldn’t want to ruin the perfect ending!

Blog Tour + Review & Giveaway: Kiss My Boots by Harper Sloan

Kiss My Boots by Harper Sloan
Series: Coming Home #2 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: July 18th 2017

In this second of the sultry, Western-set Coming Home series from New York Times bestselling author Harper Sloan, Quinn Davis might finally have a shot at her own happily-ever-after—but will she let love in, or will she tell it to go ahead and kiss her boots?

Quinn Davis prefers to live her life quietly. She’s the stereotypical tomboy with two overprotective big brothers who have always been there to protect her, especially from devilishly handsome cowboys with silver tongues. That is, until Tate Montgomery comes riding into town. Their first meeting, however, is far from something out of a fairy tale and only further convinces Quinn that men aren’t worth her time.

The only place Tate Montgomery ever truly felt at home growing up was during the long, sweltering summer months he spent at his Gram and Paw’s farm in Pine Oak, Texas. Now, Tate has returned to his childhood sanctuary seeking a fresh start—but if he’s being entirely honest, he’s not just back for the wranglers and Stetsons. During those summers, Quinn was a friend-turned-young-love who Tate lost when life threw him a curveball and he cut all ties to his past; but all it takes is one glance at the raven-haired beauty he did his best to forget for him to realize just how much he’s been missing….

Kiss My Boots is my very first Harper Sloan read, and I have to say that even though it wasn’t what I was expecting, I enjoyed it overall! It’s been a while since I’ve read a cowboy/Western-set romance, but add in the fact that this is also a second chance romance, well, I couldn’t NOT read it. I wasn’t sure how this second chance romance would play out but Harper Sloan surprised me in the best way. The characters are fun if a little over-the-top Southern and the romance is seriously swoon-worthy. I’d say if you love second chance romances with little drama, Kiss My Boots would be for you!

Nine years ago, best friends Quinn Davis and Tate Montgomery moved their friendship to the next level and gave each other their love, hearts, and bodies. With Tate about to leave for another state to go to university and eventually medical school and Quinn staying to take over her family’s auto shop, they swore to each other they wouldn’t let anything tear them apart, especially not distance. But when Tate seemingly abandons Quinn after he leaves, leaving her calls and emails unanswered, what can she do but move on from the only boy she ever loved who broke her heart?

Though Tate was forced to disappear from Quinn’s life, there was never a moment he forgot about the one girl who owned his heart and soul. Now, almost a decade later, he’s finally free to pursue the one girl, now woman, meant for him. He is determined and willing to do anything to prove to Quinn that he will never leave her or break her heart again – but can he fix the heart he shattered all those years ago?

I’d grovel until my knees have no skin left on them. If I get back and find another man in my place, I’ll fight for her regardless. If she forgot how to love me, I’ll remind her. Whatever it takes.
No more regrets.

Y’all, I was PREPARED for all the groveling I was expecting to read in this second chance romance. Unfortunately… though determined to grovel, Tate doesn’t actually have that much groveling to do. His reason for leaving Quinn is legitimate, and despite wanting to see more groveling, I was fine with the little there was. Quinn herself puts up a tough front but melts like chocolate when she’s around Tate. She takes a leap of faith this second time around hoping that this time Tate will catch her before she falls.

“You finally know the man I am now?” I ask…
“I’d know him anywhere,” she breathes.
“You givin’ him your forever?”
“God, yes.”
“Never, Quinn. I’ll never spend another day without you in it. You hear me? …I’ll spend every day makin’ up for the time we lost. That pain will never touch you again.”

The romance is so, so sweet between these two characters. There’s not much groveling, but I could still FEEL how much Tate still loves Quinn and worships the ground she walks on. He’s sexy and oh so determined to prove his love for her once again. Quinn is a bit dramatic yet a total sweetheart. She’s nervous about giving her heart over to Tate again but brave enough to do so. She still makes Tate work for it this second time around, but there’s no doubting that he’s the only man to ever own her heart.

I’d always thought home was a place, but he’s right: our home is right here, in each other’s arms.

I loved the fact that neither Tate nor Quinn were celibate during their separation. I HATE when in this trope only the heroine remains celibate while the hero sleeps with whoever he wants. It gets on my nerves so much, so I appreciated what Harper Sloan did, having them on fairly even ground when they see each other again. What did aggravate me sometimes was the overwhelming amount of dropped g’s in the dialogue. I get it, it’s set in the South, but I really didn’t need it shoved in my face, LOL.

Other than that, Kiss My Boots was an entertaining second chance romance I had a lot of fun reading. It was a book brimming with love, passion, and romance. I couldn’t get enough of Tate and Quinn’s devotion for each other! Now, I will definitely be going back to read the first Coming Home book, and possibly other Harper Sloan novels!

When you can’t trust yourself, how can you ask anyone else to?

It’s been months since Aden Colt left the Army, and still the memories haunt him. When he moved into a tiny boat off the California coast, he thought he’d found the perfect place to escape life. Then Sawyer shows up and turns his simple life upside down. Beautiful and sophisticated, she seems out of place in this laid-back beach town. Something is pushing her to experience everything she can-including Aden. But as much as he wants her, starting a relationship with Sawyer puts them both at risk. For Aden, the past doesn’t stay there; it shows up unexpectedly, uncontrollably, and doesn’t care whose life it wrecks.

Tortured hero, anyone? If you’re looking for a book that will instantly hook you and has fantastically complex characters you can’t help but root for, you should definitely check out Wrecked. It’s intense, sexy, yet still has enough light-hearted moments to balance out the dark. I really enjoyed this read!

“I’m fucking wrecked without you.”

After being honorably discharged, Aden Colt arrived back on American soil wrecked from his time overseas. The loss of his men because of his mistake haunts him, and he can’t escape his nightmares. He secludes himself in a boat off the coast of San Diego, where he’s either drinking or fishing. It’s a quiet, simple, if lonely life – but everything changes when Sawyer Forrester enters his life.

Sawyer travels to San Diego to fulfill her dying twin sister’s wish – to pretend to be her while packing up all of Celia’s belongings so that the people who knew Celia would remember her as the adventurous, lively woman she was, rather than the sick, bed-ridden woman she is now. As the sister who was always overshadowed, Sawyer thinks she’ll have a tough time channeling her inner Celia. Sawyer has slight OCD, is terrified of germs, and never goes on adventures, so how can she possibly fool anyone? What Sawyer doesn’t expect is to come to love her time as Celia because of Aden. Aden, who she feels a draw, a connection with. He opens up a new world for her and makes her see that she is capable of so much more than she realized.

It’s the way he makes me feel like I’m the only woman in the world. He responds to every word I say, every sound that slips unabashed from my lips, as if I’m giving him a secret he’s been desperate to discover. When we’re together it’s as if I’m the air and he’s begging for his next breath.

But even as the two are undeniably drawn towards one another and can’t help but fall for each other, Aden’s demon’s are never far away… and oh yeah, Aden thinks Sawyer is Celia. Aden and Sawyer have a lot going against them, but the chemistry and connection they have is unlike anything they’ve ever felt, so how can they not pursue it?

“I don’t want to forget you.”
“I’ll make sure you never will… I’ll mark your fucking soul.” His lips touch the shell of my ear and he whispers, “The way you’ve marked mine.”

I’ll admit, as much as I enjoyed the story, I had a hard time connecting with the characters, mainly because I just couldn’t relate to them. Despite that, I loved how clearly the author was able to convey all the emotions coursing through the pages. Sawyer and Aden go through a roller coaster of emotions, the highs and lows all perfectly balanced so that I was entertained the whole way through. If tortured souls and self-discovery is your jam, make sure to pick up Wrecked!

ARC Review: Checkmate: This is Dangerous by Kennedy Fox

Checkmate: This is Dangerous by Kennedy Fox
Series: Checkmate Duet #5 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: July 6th 2017

Source: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review

Introducing book 1 in the Logan & Kayla saga of the Checkmate series from a secret duo of romance authors who teamed up under the USA Today Bestselling pseudonym, Kennedy Fox!

This second-chance romance will have you gasping and cheering this two on from the first to the last page! Are you ready to play the final game?

***

Logan Knight is a real life knight in shining armor.
A detective godsend in a sleek black suit has me thinking less than secretive thoughts. Brooding and mysterious, he’s the kind of guy every girl instantly notices. Between his seductive smirk and charming good looks, it’s no wonder I can’t help the way he makes me feel whenever I’m near him.
Too bad he’s unavailable–or so he says.

He thinks I’m a do-gooder who shouldn’t get involved with a guy like him. His past is messy and relationships just add to that. He insists the timing is all wrong and he’s devoted to his career, but I don’t buy that excuse for a second. I see the way his body tenses and his jaw ticks every time another guy is around me. He just won’t admit it, but I’m more determined than ever to show him what he’s missing.

I’m a devoted animal rescuer and I’ll risk everything to save them, but when a dramatic turn of events puts both our lives at risk, I’m positive Logan will write me off for good. But when he asks for my help with a personal crisis, I know it’s my last chance to finally show him I can handle anything he throws my way–messy past and all.

He might think he has me all figured out, but I’ll prove him wrong no matter what he thinks. This game of push and pull has me running in circles. One wrong move and we could both lose.

Checkmate, Knight.

The first book in Logan and Kayla’s series wasn’t quite my favorite of the Checkmate Duet series, but I enjoyed their story nonetheless. It’s a fast, easy read with some over-the-top drama, and an AWFUL cliffhanger. I have to say that this cliffhanger was the WORST out of all three series – KF killed me with it, and I applaud them for it. So to say I’m excited for the next (and final!) book in the series would be an understatement.

Checkmate: This is Dangerous is a blend of friends-to-lovers and second-chance-romance, two of my favorite tropes. Kayla has had a crush on Logan since she first met him, but the mysterious man with a messy past has kept her firmly in the friend-zone… never mind the one or two kisses they shared. Logan’s life has no room for a woman, and despite how much he wants and cares for Kayla, he won’t make her settle for a guy who doesn’t deserve the wonder that she is.

I love love love dogs, so Kayla being an animal rescuer was perfect for me. Her character is adorable and sweet, if a little too sweet at times. She’s just so GOOD that it was sometimes unbelievable. Logan’s character grew frustrating after a while too, because of how slowly he revealed things to Kayla and him not making the effort to be with her sooner, damn the consequences. I do love a good man in uniform though, and Logan and Kayla together were on fire.

If you love the Checkmate Duet series, you will no doubt love Kayla and Logan. It’s just as crazy dramatic and intense as the previous reads. Just be prepared for that doozy of a cliffhanger, because it will have you DYING for the next book!
