“No need to be scared, Mademoiselle,” the woman said. Her thick, French accent made Amara feel panicky.

Amara focused on breathing, swallowed back her fear, and asked the only question she could think of. “Why now?”

The woman shook her head, smiling. It was just as warm as it was vile, and it made Amara’s skin crawl. “My name is Vivienne LaRue, and I am here to offer you a job. You’ll make a lot of money,” she said, as her eyes darted around the restaurant with distaste. “A lot more than you’re making here.”

Amara licked her lips. “And if I don’t want another job?”

Vivienne raised her penciled, thin eyebrows and twisted her lips. “You made a deal once, as I’m sure you remember.”

“I do, but it’s been…”

“Five years.”

“Right. Five years.”

“Your parents still live in the same house, correct? Drive the nice cars…maybe your mother doesn’t frequent shops as much, but still has her things. She got her treatment, her medical bills paid. Who do you think made that possible?”

Amara’s throat tightened as she listened to Vivienne. She knew, of course, that she was telling the truth. She just hoped there was something she could do to avoid this situation. When nothing dawned on her, she sagged into the seat behind her.

“Why now?” she asked again.

“Why not?”

“I’ve been saving money.”

“Not enough.”

“How do you know?” Amara asked defiantly.

Vivienne laughed lightly and took out one sheet of paper from her briefcase. She placed it in the center of the table, facing Amara.

“You look like a bum. You haven’t worn make-up in days. That’s not like you!  You’ve been wearing the most atrocious clothes that God only knows where you got. So spill. What’s wrong?” Courtney asked, narrowing her eyes.

Amara shut hers and breathed deeply before looking at Courtney again. “I saw Colin.”

Courtney’s mouth dropped. Amara lifted an eyebrow and nodded.

“What?” Courtney asked, shocked.

Amara began to walk again and Courtney trotted to catch up.

“In New Orleans. He was there with his fiancée,” Amara said, not looking at Courtney. She heard her gasp loudly.

“You’re kidding.”

“I wish I was.”

“Oh my God. I’m so sorry, Mara. Why didn’t you tell me?” Courtney grabbed Amara’s arm and slipped her hand into Amara’s, squeezing it once their fingers were threaded together.

Amara shrugged nonchalantly, even though every time she closed her eyes, the only thing she saw was Colin hovering over her. She could still smell him, taste his tongue on hers, and feel his hands on her.

“Amara?” Courtney said, snapping her out of it.

“Yeah. Sorry. I mean, it is what it is.” She shrugged.

Courtney stopped and pulled on Amara’s hand to face her. “Hey,” she whispered, tucking strands of hair behind Amara’s ear. “Tell me what happened.”

Amara met Courtney’s warm, sky-colored gaze and shook her head. “I saw them together… then he saw me and kissed me and he went to my hotel and we…” she took a breath. “It doesn’t matter. He walked out on me, I made him, and it’s over. For real this time. Completely over.”

As Amara stepped out of the car, a shiver ran through her. She felt eyes on her, and looked around quickly as she held on to Colin’s hand a little harder.

“You okay?” he asked, looking down. He placed one hand on the small of her back as he held her other one.

“Yeah…” she said slowly, still scanning the street.

The neighborhood his apartment building was in was definitely safe, but in that moment she felt anything but.

“You’re overworking yourself. I don’t understand why you won’t let me—“ Colin went on about that, as he usually did, but Amara was too distracted to argue with him.

Her eyes wandered to the building beside them, where she saw a group of people in dress clothes getting into a limousine, and that’s when she saw him. Philip. Amara’s heart lurched to her throat so quickly, she thought she was going to faint. She saw him around all the time, and he was always watching, always waiting. Amara always wondered when the day would come, but Philip never gave anything away. He just watched.

Philip was dressed in a tuxedo, standing beside a woman in a red dress. They were looking at Amara, scrutinizing her as they exchanged words. Philip had a glass cup in his hand, which he raised as if to salute her.

Amara felt her knees giving out beneath her.

“Sweetheart, you’re scaring me,” Colin said. He stopped walking and faced her, holding both of her arms. Amara was still looking in Philip’s direction, and Colin’s eyes followed. He gave Philip a small wave, he’d met him a couple of times in parties and saw him around the neighborhood often.

“Is everything all right?” Colin asked, his voice full of concern.

Amara nodded, looking into Philip’s icy blue eyes. “Yeah, everything’s fine,” she whispered. “Just fine.”
