Best friends since they could walk. In love since the age of fourteen.

Complete strangers since this morning.

He’ll do anything to remember. She’ll do anything to forget.

I love dual narrator audiobooks and I love Colleen Hoover, so I couldn’t not listen to the Never Never audiobook! This book was quite the experience – I almost have no clue what I just listened to (I was left with so many questions!!!!) but I know that I enjoyed it. Never Never is mysterious, dark, and complex, with a storyline that keeps you reading and wanting for more.

Silas and Charlie wake up one day with no idea who they are. As they navigate through the mystery of why they have no past memories, they slowly learned clues that reveal who they are to each other. I’m not going to say much about the plot, because I highly recommend going into this blind. The blurb doesn’t tell you much, and that’s exactly the way it should be. All I will say is that even though it’s highly suspenseful and heart-pounding and you’re literally going “What is going on” the entire time – at its heart, Never Never is a love story, a love story that’s captivating and heart-wrenching. I fell in love with the Charlie and Silas. Especially Silas. The two of them together are a hot mess and yet they’re perfect for each other.

This audiobook was fantastic to listen to. The narrators perfectly matched the characters and overall, they were just really easy to listen to. Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher’s writing is spectacular, so I have no complaints about that. However, even though I know this is a series of novellas, I do wish Never Never longer – the audiobook is about 4.5 hours long, half as long as what I usually listen to, so I finished this pretty quickly. And when I finished, I was left with so many questions that I’m really hoping will be answered in the next book.

If you’re in the mood for something that will get your mind revving and leave you hanging for more, I highly recommend Never Never. I loved the writing, the narrators were great, and I couldn’t get enough of the characters.

From New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Frank comes the final chapter in the Nightwalkers saga! As the momentous showdown with a powerful demon unfolds, a passionate encounter breaks the ultimate taboo.

Kamen is a Bodywalker, an ancient soul reborn in one human host after another. He’s also a prisoner of his own kind: for it was Kamen who released Apep, the deadly god who threatens the existence of their world. To atone for this grievous error, Kamen accepts an urgent mission: to convince the other nations of the Nightwalkers to set aside their centuries-old conflicts and band together. If he fails, all will be lost. And no tribe presents a greater challenge than the Wraiths, the spectral beings who are feared and despised for their lethal deathtouch.

Kamen makes first contact with a stunning, ghostly pale beauty named Geneviève. Part Wraith and part human, scorned as a half-breed, Viève shares the hunger for redemption—and for connection. Her scintillating touch holds the kiss of death, and yet it makes Kamen feel more alive than ever. Soon his lips are pressed against hers, sending Viève into fits of desire and forging a bond that breaches the divide between them. Now they must unite all the Nightwalkers, from Vampire and Shadowdweller to Djynns, and fast—for Apep is ready for war.

Isabella Russ, known simply as Bella or Bella the Enforcer, had found herself living in New Mexico for the better part of seven months now. It was necessary for her to be there in order to work closely with Kamenwati, the Bodywalkers’ most learned man. So she had moved and, with great reluctance, brought her children to the compound as well. The god Apep knew where the compound was and had already made an attack on it. It was dangerous to have them there.

But living apart from them for days at a time? Unacceptable. She would not be a ghost in her children’s lives during the most important years of their development. True, Leah was ten now and more than capable of being independent of her mother for short stretches of time, but her son was not. He was just exiting his toddler years, having only recently learned all the basics of walking and potty training and other such milestones for a child of three going on four.

But she struggled constantly with the idea of them being potentially in the line of fire. Luckily their father was there and he had always been able to protect them. And several of their friends from the other Nightwalkers in the First Faction were there as well. There were Sagan and Valera, the former Shadowdweller priest and his natural Witch wife; Jasmine and Adam, the Vampire prince’s most trusted aide and her Demon husband; Windsong, one of the Mistral leaders; and Jinaeri, a Lycanthrope scholar.

Together it meant that every member of the First Faction was represented. As for the Second Faction, so far there were numerous Bodywalkers, a Night Angel named Faith and her human husband, Leo, who often acted as a translator and who came with some mercenary skills of his own. There was a Djynn named Kat and her Gargoyle husband—although the Gargoyles were not technically members of the Second Faction because they were the scions of the Bodywalkers. She’d learned that Gargoyles had been created by Templars to be used as slaves. Other than that, there was no representation of the Mysticals, no one from the Phoenixes and no one from the Wraiths . . . although to hear the Second Faction tell it, this was a good thing.

But Bella couldn’t escape the thought that they needed to have the Phoenixes and Mysticals there. As she got dressed for the night she thought about it more and more. If they were going to get out of this mess they needed all hands on deck.

An idea that was supported only an hour later when she met up with Kamen and he revealed his discovery, via Leo who was interpreting between the two.

“But if what you’re saying is true, then we have to get the Phoenixes and Mysticals on board. And the Wraiths.”

“We’ll have to do this without the Wraiths. Trust me, they are too deadly to be dealt with.”

“Well, we’ll have to deal with at least one of them according to this. I think it means we need a party of twelve to defeat Apep,” Bella said.

“Surely you aren’t thinking of sending just twelve people to fight a god?” Kamen was aghast.

“Of course not! But we have to have at least twelve. One from each nation. That means you have to make nice with a Wraith.”

Kamen thought about this a moment. “Then it seems it’s clear what we have to do here. We have to make contact with each of these groups and get representatives from each to come here.”

“And who are you going to get to do that?” Leo asked. “The last time we met up with Wraiths they almost killed Faith and me.”

“I don’t know, but someone has to try,” Kamen said.

“We should start with the Phoenixes and Mysticals first. Begin with the easy ones,” Bella said.

“Easy? We’ve been trying to contact them and get them to cooperate for months now. They aren’t all that interested,” Kamen said.

“Well then, we need to send someone to make it interesting for them,” Bella said.

Kamen grew quiet then said, “It should be me.”

“You? Why you? We need you here, researching how to break this curse.”

“I have to do this,” Kamen said firmly. “I have to do something other than study books. You can take over doing it just as easily as I can for now. Let me go to the courts of the other three Nightwalkers.”

“So you’re going to reach out to the Wraiths?”

“We have to at least try to approach them. They might surprise us.”

“Or they might kill you. No way. No way are you going alone. At the very least you should take Leo. He’s human and immune to their deathtouch.”

“Or so we believe,” Kamen retorted. “There’s no proof of that.”

“You can’t go alone. It would be suicide.”

“It’s homicide to risk more than one life . . . and it will look less threatening if one is sent as opposed to a cadre of Nightwalkers showing up on their doorstep.”

“He has a point,” Leo added. “One trained man can get in a lot better than six. I just don’t know if I’d call Kamen a trained man.”

“I can take care of myself,” Kamen said harshly. “I was second only to Odjit when it came to Templar power. I can keep the Wraiths off me long enough to get them to talk and I can escape more quickly than anyone else. It would be better if I didn’t have anyone else to worry about in the process.”

“I’m convinced,” Leo said. “I just don’t think you’re going to convince Jackson.”

“If you want to convince the leader of the Politic Bodywalkers to let you do this,” Bella said, “you better meet with him alone. There are too many people here who think the worst of you and will shoot you down before you can say boo about it.”

“I am aware of that,” Kamen said grimly. “But getting Jackson alone will not be an easy trick for me.”

“It would be for me,” Leo said. “He’s my best friend after all. If I ask him to meet me alone, he’ll come alone. Bella, you can stay here and work,” Leo said, indicating the mounds of books that had been brought into the library for her and Kamen to go through together.

She nodded and let them go. She crossed her fingers though. There were too many variables that made it a bad idea all around. But she had a feeling Kamen was going to convince Jackson . . . or die trying.

You can follow the rules or you can follow your heart…

THE MOMENT OF LETTING GO

Sienna Murphy never does anything without a plan. And so far her plans have been working. Right after college, she got a prestigious job and gained the stability she’d always craved–until work takes her to the sun-drenched shores of Oahu and places her in the path of sexy surfer Luke Everett. For the first time, she lets her heart take control. Drawn to his carefree charm, she makes a spontaneous and very un-Sienna-like decision to drop everything and stay in Hawaii for two more weeks.

Luke lives fast and wild. When he meets Sienna, he’s convinced that some no-strings-attached fun is just what she needs. As their nights quickly turn from playful to passionate, Luke can’t deny the deep connection he feels. But there’s a reason Luke doesn’t do long-term. He can’t promise Sienna forever, when the enormity of his past has shown him just how fragile the future can be.

I really liked The Moment of Letting Go – I may not have loved it like I wanted to, but it’s still a sweet, meaningful book that I enjoyed. In this book, J.A. Redmerski writes a heartwarming tale about taking chances, facing your fears, and letting go.

“We’re all stronger than our weaknesses,” he says. “Sometimes we just need someone else to help us find that strength.”

Sienna Murphy lives life by the paycheck. She grew up poor, so she chose a job where she wouldn’t have to worry about money ever again. She’s well-off as a wedding planner, but lately it seems like work has become her life. Her latest assignment takes her to the gorgeous beaches of Oahu, Hawaii, where she hopes she’ll have downtime to relax and expand her photography skills. Sadly, the wedding doesn’t go off as planned and Sienna once again gets swept up in work. It isn’t until she meets Luke Everett, a cute local surfing instructor, that she begins to question what she really wants out of life.

…my life has, for the most part, stayed on one straight course, never risking unfamiliar roads, rarely contemplating change–but Luke makes me feel like I can, that it’s somehow safe to take a chance on something unknown. It’s frightening, yes, but it’s also exciting, and that’s just not something I think I can ignore.

Luke challenges Sienna to take more risks and to discover her true passion in life. Sienna is deathly afraid of heights, but with Luke’s help, she learns to step out of her comfort zone and face her fears. Luke himself is a daredevil and hiding some secrets of his own, so these two characters couldn’t be more different. But Luke and Sienna form a connection from the very moment they meet. There’s attraction, yes, but there’s so much more to their relationship that I really appreciated reading about. The Moment of Letting Go is not just a story of girl meets boy in Hawaii – it’s the kind of story that takes you on a discovery of self, passion, and life.

“Most people never let their feet leave the ground,” he goes on. ”Whether they’re afraid of heights, or afraid of hospitals, or they stay in the same place all their life because they’re afraid of change–so many people go through life on the ground and die without ever knowing that they can fly.”

I really enjoyed experiencing Sienna and Luke’s story – I loved being swept away by the gorgeous Hawaii setting and I adored how Luke took Sienna on an adventure, pushing her just enough to truly experience life. I didn’t really connect with their characters, but I appreciated their story nonetheless. I did get a little annoyed at the secrets Luke keeps from Sienna – we know what those secrets are, since the book is told in dual POV, but for the majority of the book, Luke keeps a huge secret from Sienna that I really didn’t understand why he hadn’t revealed sooner.

Still, The Moment of Letting Go is quite honestly a feel-good read. I enjoyed it for the most part, though it didn’t wring any intense emotions out of me. It was missing that spark for me that would normally make me love a book, but it’s not bad. I think fans of J.A. Redmerski would definitely enjoy this newest standalone of hers.

Audiobook Review: Kaleidoscope Hearts by Claire Contreras

Kaleidoscope Hearts by Claire Contreras

Kaleidoscope Hearts by Claire Contreras
Series: Hearts #1 (full reading order below)
Audiobook Publication Date: June 23rd 2015
Length: 8 hours and 52 minutes
Narrated by: Christy Romano & Vikas Adam

He was my older brother’s best friend.
He was never supposed to be mine.
I thought we would get it out of our system and move on.

One of us did.
One of us left.

Now he’s back, looking at me like he wants to devour me. And all those feelings I’d turned into anger are brewing into something else, something that terrifies me.
He broke my heart last time.
This time he’ll obliterate it.

I enjoyed this audiobook so, so much! This is my first read – well, listen – from Claire Contreras, and it certainly won’t be my last. Mainly because I NEED the sequel, and I just love Claire’s writing! Kaleidoscope Hearts is a combination of two of my favorite tropes: second chance romance and the best friend’s little sister. So YAY for that alone! But I’m glad to say that this book won my heart because of more than just those tropes – I adored it because of its gorgeous writing and the heart-wrenching romance.

Every second counts. Live in this moment. This is life. This is what matters.

A year after her fiancé’s death, Estelle is finally moving on. While Wyatt may not have been THE love of her life, Elle still loved Wyatt all the same and was devastated by his death. Now, she’s moving in with her brother, Vic – but Elle’s first love, her brother’s best friend, the boy who shattered her heart so many years ago, is back in her life.

He was the one I loved first. He was the one who broke my heart first, and here he is again. For how long this time, I wonder? Does it matter? My heart bleeds.

Elle and Oliver kept their love and relationship a secret, because they didn’t want Vic, Elle’s brother and Oliver’s best friend, to find out. Plus, while Oliver may have loved Elle back then, he had so many problems and just wasn’t ready to settle down. I really loved the way Claire Contreras slowly revealed to us about Elle and Oliver’s former relationship. Kaleidoscope Hearts is told in dual POV, with Oliver’s set in the past and Elle’s set in the present. My heart broke for Elle after all the pain Oliver caused her. Theirs is a one-of-a-kind love, but it just wasn’t meant to be at that moment of time in their lives. Now, though, everything’s different – yet the same, because it’s obvious that Oliver and Elle never stopped loving each other.

“I always thought you were mine,” he says.

I liked Elle, surprisingly a lot more than I did Oliver. I loved the way Elle shoots Oliver down when he comes back in her life, because Oliver seriously needed to do some ass-kissing before he even deserved another chance with her. She’s been through so much pain, first with Oliver, then with Wyatt’s death, but she comes out stronger than ever. Elle is an artist with a talent for creating kaleidoscope hearts, building shattered pieces of glass into hearts that are now whole. It’s pretty meaningful and symbolic – the whole book is pretty meaningful, actually. Claire Contreras wrote a fantastic book about second chances, about living life to the fullest, because you never know which moment may be your last.

I loved Elle’s narrator, Christy Romano. She did an excellent job of conveying all of Elle’s heartbreak and strength. The voice of Oliver’s narrator, Vikas Adam, didn’t really seem to match up with what I thought would be Oliver’s voice, but it grew on me later on.

Oliver’s character, unfortunately, is the reason I can’t give Kaleidoscope Hearts 5 stars. Sometimes, I really was skeptical of Oliver’s love for Elle, because of how much he kept hurting her. He doesn’t really prove his love when he comes back into her life either. It wasn’t until the very end that I was finally sold on him as a hero, because Oliver finally takes action and becomes the man who deserves to be with Elle.

“My mind is yours. My hands are yours. My heart is yours. Everything I have is yours. Everything I am is yours.”

Overall, Kaleidoscope Hearts is a fantastic second chance romance full of heartache and emotion. There’s quite a bit of back and forth between Elle and Oliver that only grew slightly tedious, but I really did like the way their romance developed this second time around. It was also so lovely as an audiobook – I love dual narrations, so this one made me really happy. If you’re in the mood for a second chance romance with a ton of feels, I highly recommend this one!

“All things truly wicked start from innocence.” – Ernest Hemingway

I hear screams in my head.
I see blood on my hands.
When I look in the mirror I see a stranger.

How is it that I can remember bits and pieces of my life, but nothing of any importance and nothing that makes any sense? Everything is twisted and nothing is right. I’m choking with every breath I take, suffocating on the unknown.

Two days ago, everything changed. Two days ago, the people I should trust the most became strangers in my convoluted head. The dreams I have can’t be real. The fleeting memories that whisper through my mind are scary and wrong…they have to be. If they aren’t, I have something much worse to fear than my fractured mind. I need to find out the truth, even if it destroys me.

I’ve been told my name is Ravenna Duskin. I’m eighteen years old and I live in a prison…

Before I can command my feet to move toward the shape—the safer of the two evils—I hear another sound in the opposite direction and foolishly turn my head. Something heavy and solid crashes against my skull and I feel myself falling. Darkness descends over me one last time, covering my eyes, clogging my ears and stealing the breath from my lungs. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Nothing will ever be good again.

It will all be bad.
