“We never danced before,” she said softly. Her breath was sweet, citrusy, and he was tempted to lick that sugar from her lips, but uncertainty held him back.

“We never did a whole lot of anything before except fuck.” Exactly what he wanted to do now. And afterward, maybe they could talk, or do what couples did, although never having really been part of a couple, he didn’t know what that would be. Watch TV? Go for a ride? Fuck some more?

“Maybe that’s ’cause that’s all we’re good for together.”

That gave him pause. Yes, he enjoyed sex with Dawn, but he genuinely liked her. She was smart, sweet, sensitive, and funny. She had more grit and determination than anyone he’d met, working three jobs, putting up with Shelly-Ann, never giving up hope she’d get her girls back. He wanted to spend more time with her, but she was always running away.

“Well, we gotta have something together, because now you’re wearing my cut and there’s no turning back.” He brushed his fingers through her beautiful long, blond hair. They had that in common. But Dawn was soft, where he was hard. Curved where he was straight. Sweet where he was bitter.

“If you’d told me three weeks ago I’d be in a biker bar, dancing with a biker and wearing a cut, I’d never have believed you. This was the last thing I ever thought I wanted. Me. A biker’s old lady again.”

His old lady. He liked the sound of it. He liked watching the words on her lips, tumbling over the silky softness and into his heart. Three weeks ago, sitting in his booth at Peelers with Delilah in his lap, he never would have believed he’d have an old lady. “Say it again.”

She licked her lips, and the sight of her little pink tongue made him hard.

“Old lady.”

“My old lady. Say it.”

Dawn studied him for a minute, considering. “Yours.” She leaned up and kissed him and he lost the last threads of his control.

Welcome to today’s stop on the blog tour for Zack by Sawyer Bennett! We have some special guests here on the blog – please welcome Sawyer Bennett and the Cold Fury players!!!

Sawyer Interviews the Cold Fury Players

I had a chance to sit down with the boys from the Carolina Cold Fury and asked them a handful of fan questions. Cold Fury Captain, Alex Crossman, as well as linemen Garrett Samuelson and Zack Grantham are here with me.

Alright guys, I have a handful of questions from some of your biggest fans. Think you’re up for this?

ALEX: “We’re ready.”

Excellent. Hockey is a physically demanding sport and requires you to stay in top physical condition. What sort of routine do you follow to stay in shape?

ALEX: *snorts* Do you want the answer pre or post-Sutton?
GARRETT: *howls in laughter* Dude, you know she’ll kill you if you talk about sex in an interview.
ZACK: *shakes his head in disbelief*
ALEX: Obviously during the season, we have practices and team drills, plus a pretty rigorous weight room regimen. In the off season, there is a group of Cold Fury members that meet regularly to run and hit the weight room. We attend whenever our schedules allow.

How do you cope when you are injured?

ZACK: I’ll take this one, since I spent a significant amount of time recently injured and in rehab. I’m not going to lie. It sucks. You spend so much of your life working toward a goal, and once you’ve achieved that goal, you spend your time making sure you stay on top of your game. You always strive to be your best. Then something happens that prevents you from being your best and it sends your world into a tailspin.

My situation obviously had a lot of other outside factors that contributed, but the most important thing you can do is follow your doctor’s orders. Rest when you’re told to rest. Go to therapy when you’re told to go to therapy. And most importantly, don’t let yourself return to the game before you’re ready. The damage could be much worse than the reward.

GARRETT: *places a hand on Zack’s shoulder in a show of support*

What drives you to keep playing the game day after day, week after week?

GARRETT: There is nothing better than stepping onto the ice and having 20,000+ fans screaming for your team. The adrenaline is unreal. As grueling as practices and conditioning are, the games are what make it worthwhile.
ALEX: And The Cup, man. The Stanley Cup. The thought of kissing that beast and lifting it up in the air in victory? That’s what it’s all about.

What is your life plan after hockey?

ALEX: I want to help Sutton at the center. The work she’s doing there is so important and I want to help make a difference.
SAWYER: Really? After all the fuss you made?
ALEX: That’s before I knew Sutton. That’s before I really knew myself.
ZACK: I’d love to get more involved in Ben’s school. Maybe coach his little league team or something.

What is your favorite sport to watch or play outside of hockey?

GARRETT: Golf. There is nothing like hitting the links with Alex, or some of the other guys, having a couple beers, and enjoying a beautiful North Carolina day.

Would you want your children to follow in your footsteps?

ALEX: Only if they want to. I’ve lived a life where I was forced to participate in something I didn’t want to do. I wouldn’t wish that on any kid. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves with that whole kid thing though.
ZACK: Same. I would never force Ben to participate in anything he didn’t want to do. But if he did want to play, I’d be sure to give him all the necessary tools to be successful.

Alright, two more questions and then I’ll let you guys get back to practice. Travel away from loved ones is hard. How do you stay connected?

GARRETT: FaceTime is basically the greatest thing ever created. Olivia and I are big fans. BIG fans.
ALEX: *snickers* Looks like I’m not the only one that is going to have a pissed woman waiting for me at home.
GARRETT: Hey, the road gets lonely. What can I say?
ALEX: Hey, I’m not knocking it. I never knew how great phone sex could be until I met Sutton.
ZACK: God, I love phone sex.
GARRETT: And the photos. So. Many. Photos.
ALEX: So many photos, so few clothes.
ZACK: You’re killing me right now.
SAWYER: I feel like it’s time to move on to the next topic.
ALEX: *shifts uncomfortably in his chair* Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.

Last one, and honestly, I’m not sure this one will be any better than the last. *sigh* How big is your stick?

ZACK: *chokes on his drink of water*
GARRETT: Oh, it’s huge.
ALEX: So huge.
ZACK: Geez, warn a guy before you throw shit like that out there.
SAWYER: Sorry. *blushes* That question was probably uncalled for.
ALEX: That question was awesome. I love talking about my stick any chance I get.
GARRETT: You like showing it to people too.
ALEX: Hey, I’m proud of my stick.
ZACK: Hell, my stick is my greatest asset.

It appears I’ve lost all control of this interview. Garrett leans over to Alex and whispers something, and they are howling in laughter. I wait until the laughter dies down just a little.

SAWYER: Alex, Garrett, and Zack…thank you for sitting down with me today. I look forward to seeing you guys on the ice.

Shaking hands, we say our good-byes and the Cold Fury boys are off to practice. I would be lying if I said I didn’t check them out from behind as they left the room.

Early Review: The Marriage Contract by Katee Robert

The Marriage Contract by Katee Robert
Series: The O’Malleys #1 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: June 2nd 2015

Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert begins a smoking hot new series about the O’Malley family-wealthy, powerful, dangerous and seething with scandal.

Teague O’Malley hates pretty much everything associated with his family’s name. And when his father orders him to marry Callista Sheridan to create a “business” alliance, Teague’s ready to tell his dad exactly where he can stuff his millions. But then Teague actually meets his new fiancée, sees the bruises on her neck and the fight still left in her big blue eyes, and vows he will do everything in his power to protect her.

Everyone knows the O’Malleys have a dangerous reputation. But Callie wasn’t aware just what that meant until she saw Teague, the embodiment of lethal grace and coiled power. His slightest touch sizzles through her. But the closer they get, the more trouble they’re in. Because Callie’s keeping a dark secret-and what Teague doesn’t know could get him killed.

I’d previously only read one other book by Katee Robert (Falling for His Best Friend) and utterly adored it, so I was looking forward to reading the author’s other books. I was especially looking forward to this one, since I’m a big fan of mafia books. The Marriage Contract sounded right up my alley, and that blurb had me hooked! I didn’t end up entirely loving this book, but I really enjoyed it – it’s a promising start to The O’Malley’s series, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this series.

Callista “Callie” Sheridan is heir to the Sheridan mafia family, and as the heir her duty is to do anything and everything that benefits the family – including an arranged marriage with one of the O’Malley’s, a rival mafia family. As much as she opposes an arranged marriage, she takes her job as the heir seriously, but once she gets a glimpse of her fiancé, she’s not as reluctant to enter into the marriage.

“If you could see the way you’re looking at me right now.”
She immediately dropped her eyes, but only for a heartbeat. “How am I looking at you?”
… “Like there are a thousand thoughts rushing behind those beautiful blue eyes and every single on of them involves up, naked and sweaty.”

Teague O’Malley wants nothing better than to take his siblings away and escape from the mafia life. Unfortunately, his father has other plans for him. He’s ordered to marry the Sheridan heir to form an alliance between the families. But upon their first meeting, Teague is intrigued by Callie and his protective instincts rise when he sees bruises on her neck. Both are incredibly attracted to one another, and the author did a great job amping up the chemistry between the main characters.

I didn’t connect very well with Callie or Teague, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy their characters or story, because I did. I liked how both Callie and Teague grew so protective of each other. The Hallorans, the other prominent mafia family in their city, want to start a war with the Sheridans and O’Malleys, and Callie and Teague are in danger. They go to great lengths to protect each other and their families, all the while taking time out to spend as much time together. They easily fall for one another, although Callie hides a secret that could tear them apart. Both are loyal, passionate, stubborn people, and I really enjoyed the way they just clicked together.

“I might not have been the one to choose you, but you’re mine, Teague O’Malley, for better or worse.”

Overall, I liked this book, though it wasn’t what I expected. There’s a ton of stuff going on between the three mafia families, and it was nearly difficult to keep up with everything. The plot, intriguing as it is, sometimes overshadowed the romance, which I wasn’t a fan of. Still, it’s a good first book to this series that I expect I’ll come to love. I’m actually really excited for the next book, Carrigan and James’s story! Carrigan is Teague’s sister and James is a Halloran, so I’m VERY intrigued to see how the story will play out with such an antagonistic couple.

“This is who I am. This is what I want. Now I need a man dangerous enough to give it to me.”

Graduate student Vivienne Charles is afraid of her own desires—ashamed to admit that she fantasizes about being taken by force, by a man who will claim her completely and without mercy. When the magnetic, mysterious Jonah Marks learns her secret, he makes an offer that stuns her: they will remain near-strangers to each other, and meet in secret so that he can fulfill her fantasy.

Their arrangement is twisted. The sex is incredible. And—despite their attempts to stay apart—soon their emotions are bound together as tightly as the rope around Vivienne’s wrists. But the secrets in their pasts threaten to turn their affair even darker…

Reader Advisory: Asking for It deals explicitly with fantasies of non-consensual sex. Readers sensitive to portrayals of non-consensual sex should be advised.

Holy WOW!!! WOW. What an incredible read. I’m still not quite sure what to make of it, but I know I wholehearted enjoyed this book.

When I first got an email about Asking for It, I was SO intrigued. It’s a book about two people who fantasize about non-consensual sex. Rape. A sensitive subject, definitely, but I thought the author handled it excellently.

If it’s all in my head, and it makes me come, what’s the harm?
(It makes me come hard.)
The harm is when the lines between reality and fantasy get blurred.
Like they did last night.

This book is just… it’s a lot to handle. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel reading a book with this theme, but the author wrote this book so flawlessly that I couldn’t put it down. Vivienne and Jonah’s exploration of their fantasies is nothing short of mind-blowing, mentally and physically. I was intrigued by the blurb, but the moment I started reading, I was hooked onto the story and the characters.

“You hate it, don’t you? The fantasy. I do too. But it doesn’t change anything.”

Asking for It is provocative. Sexy. Intense. When Vivienne and Jonah start a no-strings relationship in which they get fulfill their fantasies, it was so much hotter than I thought it would be. None of the sex felt gratuitous – it all served a purpose. I got so turned on by the raw, gritty, intense, hot fucking between them, yet the story goes so much deeper than just the enacting of their fantasies. As I got to know Vivienne and Jonah, I became invested in their characters. There are so many layers to them, and so many more to unravel by the end of the book. And just a heads up, Asking for It is not a standalone.

I loved how Vivienne and Jonah find a safe place with each other to enact their fantasies. There’s a huge amount of trust involved, which means it’s easy for their hearts to get involved. The romance isn’t quite a romance – feelings develop but they’re not concrete quite yet. There’s a lot of potential for love between Jonah and Vivienne, and I’m looking forward to reading more of them.

“You destroy me every time. Completely.”

If you’re intrigued by the blurb, then I say go for it. It’s a sensitive subject, but the author handles it with confidence and grace. The writing is absolutely stunning – I’d recommend this book based on that alone. As for the romance, even though there’s not much of it, I’d still recommend giving this a try. I’m a total romance sap, yet I wasn’t dissatisfied by the way the romance played out in this book. It’s slow going, for sure, but I’m eagerly awaiting the sequel to see where the author takes Jonah and Vivienne.

4 hearts for Asking for It – it’s a fascinating, promising start to Vivienne and Jonah’s story.

Blog Tour + Guest Post & Giveaway: Searching for Beautiful by Jennifer Probst

Searching for Beautiful tour banner

Welcome to today’s stop on the blog tour for Searching for Beautiful by Jennifer Probst! We have Jennifer here today with a scene from the book!

Here’s a quick taste of my first scene in Searching for Beautiful!

“Holy shit.”

He stared in shock at the sight before him.

The bride lay in a tangle of limbs, sprawled out on the pavement. The white cloud of lace and dozens of pearly jewels floated around her in a swarm of glory. His heart stopped, stuttered, and kicked back into gear. Jesus, she was gorgeous. Gen had always been an attractive female by all standards, but now she looked as delicate as a doll perched on a wedding cake. She must’ve ripped off her veil because her elaborate twist hairdo lay drunkenly to the side with pins sticking out. The humidity kicked her curls into gear, and already they were springing wild, refusing to be tamed. Snapping blue eyes glared at him, framed in black liner and some sparkly shadow. She never wore makeup. But today, those stunning navy eyes dominated her heart-shaped face with a sultry, sexy air he rarely spotted from her. Four-inch stiletto diamond-encrusted heels stuck out from her balloon hoop gown. Wolfe caught the flash of white lace garters and curved, muscled legs before she flipped the skirt back down and huffed out a breath. “Are you smoking on my damn wedding day? You told me you quit. Julietta’s going to kill you.”

He fought past his lack of speech and wondered if this was a hallucination. “Not if you don’t tell her.”

She sniffed. “You wish. I don’t want you to die of lung cancer. Don’t just stand there gaping. Help me up, I can barely move in this thing.”

And then she was just Gen again. His best friend, a general pain in the ass, and the most precious person in the world to him.

Wolfe moved fast and pulled her up. “Are you okay? Did you fall out the window?”

She rebalanced herself on those ridiculous heels and waved her hand in the air. “Yeah, I’m fine. My hips got stuck but I managed.”

She dusted off her pristine white dress as if jumping out of church windows were a normal occurrence. Damn, she was a hell of a woman. “Umm, babe? Are you pulling a runaway bride thing? Or did you just want to confirm the fire exit worked?”

Her ballsy humor faded from her face. She tilted her chin up, and her lower lip trembled. “I’m in trouble. Will you help me?”

He kept his face calm even though his palms sweat. Something bad had happened, but right now she needed his head in the game. “We ditching the groom?”

“Yeah.”

Wolfe decided to play it like a big adventure. “Cool. I got you covered. Lose the shoes.”

She kicked off the killer stilettos. “Are there reporters out there?”

“No worries, this is a piece of cake. But we gotta move now. Take my hand.”

She placed her small hand in his and squeezed. Wolfe swore that even if he had to fight the whole Taliban, he was getting her out of here and to someplace safe. Discussion was for later. “My car is parked down the street so we’re good. Follow me.”

He led her down the back steps, behind the rectory, and maneuvered through a perfectly formed line of flowering bushes. She paused in flight, wincing at the chips of mulch and gravel. “Ouch.”

“You’re such a girl. Here, you’re going too slow.” Wolfe heaved her up into his arms in a tumble of satin and lace and cut through some weeping willow trees.

“I can’t believe you parked so far away. That means you were late. Some best friend you are.”

“Be glad I was late. I’m saving your ass now.”

She gave a humph. He walked faster, sensing chaos and a complete breakdown not too far behind. If he didn’t get her out in time and anyone caught them leaving, it would be a virtual shitstorm. He ducked under a low-hanging branch, tracked through the backyard of a Cape Cod behind the church, and took a hard right. She stayed silent, and Wolfe bet he had two minutes before her crazy impulsive decision hit her and she said she’d go back.

But if something made her run, it was too important to ignore. The hell he’d take her back.

Finally, he spotted his black Mercedes convertible. He fished the keys out of his pocket, hit the alarm, and opened the door. “In.”

Another lower lip tremble. “Wolfe, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe I should go back.”

“Do you want to marry him, Gen? Deep down, in your gut, where it counts?”

Her teeth sank into her lower lip. Shame and fear and humiliation etched out the lines of her face. Her voice broke on the word “No.”

He nodded and calmly pushed her in the seat.

“Then you’re doing the right thing and we’ll work it out. I promise.”

She swallowed. Returned his nod. And slid into the car.

Wolfe wasted no time. He revved the engine and did a three-point turn, going out the back way and speeding away from the church like it was a devil’s sanctuary and their souls were at risk.

When they hit the open road and no one seemed to be following, he glanced over. She slumped in the seat, her hair hanging halfway down her neck, her graceful profile carved in stone. She stared out the window as if she was watching her life dissipate behind her. And in a way, it was.

Knowing what she needed the most right now, Wolfe hit the speaker system and Guns N’ Roses blasted out, hard and loud and raw. He didn’t speak.

Just drove.
