Sela Halstead lost her innocence in a way that no sixteen-year-old should ever have to endure. She’s spent years trying to forget that night even while wondering about the identities of the monsters who brutalized her—until a telltale tattoo flashes across Sela’s TV screen. The incriminating ink belongs to Jonathon Townsend, the millionaire founder of The Sugar Bowl, a website that matches rich older men with impressionable young women. Obsessed with revenge, Sela infiltrates Townsend’s world, only to come face-to-face with a tantalizing complication: Beckett North, his charismatic business partner.

The tech mastermind behind The Sugar Bowl, Beck always gets what he wants, in business and in bed. And yet, for a man who’s done every dirty thing imaginable, there’s something about the naïve, fresh-faced Sela that sparks his hottest fantasies. Because with her, it’s not just about sex. Beck opens up to her in ways he never has with other girls. So why does he get the feeling that she’s hiding something? In a world of pleasure and power, the shocking truth could turn them against each other—or bind them forever.

Note: Sugar Daddy ends on a cliffhanger. Sela and Beck’s story continues in Sugar Rush and Sugar Free!

Sawyer Bennett is a go-to contemporary romance author for me – her books are always so well-written and enjoyable! Sugar Daddy has been on my radar ever since I heard the awesome title, and then I read the blurb, which totally sold me. Sugar Daddy is the first book in Sela and Beck’s story, and seriously, I’m dying for more. It’s a good start to a series that has so much potential to become even better. Fans of the author should definitely check this one out!

The plot of Sugar Daddy is intriguing, to say the least. Sela Halstead is on a plan of revenge against the men who raped her on her sixteenth birthday ten years ago. It’s a rash, not-too-smart move, but who can blame her with the hatred she feels against Jonathon Townsend, one of her rapists who’s living the rich life? Her in is through The Sugar Bowl, of which Jonathon co-owns, a dating website for sugar daddies and sugar babies. Sela disguises herself as a sugar baby, and while she planned to get close to Jonathon, she doesn’t expect to get close to his co-owner instead.

Whatever the connection . . . for whatever reason that I’ve given her something that others haven’t, I have a deep gut instinct that it’s something that defies reason or logic. I almost get the sense it’s mystical in nature and I’m intrigued beyond measure. And for the first time in my life, I’m doing something that is completely unlike anything Beck North has ever done before.
I’m exploring something deeper with one woman.
This woman to be exact.

Beckett North is the tech genius behind The Sugar Bowl, though he doesn’t partake in its activities himself. He’s rich enough to be a sugar daddy, but he’s never wanted to be one… until now. From the moment he meets Sela, he wants her bad, and he’ll do anything to have her. So they agree on a contract that will last a month to explore the explosive chemistry between them. Sugar Daddy is seriously HOT – Sawyer Bennett writes some steamy scenes in this book. But what I loved in addition to that was the way Sela and Beck develop feelings for each other slowly. But can they have a relationship when it’s built on lies, and Sela is determined to go through with her revenge?

I, Sela Halstead, am not as broken as I thought I was. While I thought Jonathon Townsend took everything away from me, I’ve realized just now that he took nothing. He only warped my perception.
… I realized that intimacy is actually something that I could learn to crave with a man like Beckett North and that I’ve only just begun to discover the true potential inside of myself.

I loved the way this book started and ended (omg – don’t even get me started on that killer cliffhanger). The middle was a little too slow and repetitive, but I still enjoyed the book overall. The ending made me want to SCREAM – I need the next book yesterday. Sugar Daddy is a great first installment – I may not have completely loved it, but I’m totally invested in Sela and Beck, and can’t wait to see how their story continues.

Review: Ride Hard by Laura Kaye

Ride Hard by Laura Kaye
Series: Raven Riders #1 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: April 26th 2016

Source: I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Brotherhood. Club. Family.
They live and ride by their own rules.
These are the Raven Riders…

Raven Riders Motorcycle Club President Dare Kenyon rides hard and values loyalty above all else. He’ll do anything to protect the brotherhood of bikers–the only family he’s got–as well as those who can’t defend themselves. So when mistrustful Haven Randall lands on the club’s doorstep scared that she’s being hunted, Dare takes her in, swears to keep her safe, and pushes to learn the secrets overshadowing her pretty smile.

Haven fled from years of abuse at the hands of her criminal father and is suspicious of any man’s promises, including those of the darkly sexy and overwhelmingly intense Ravens’ leader. But as the powerful attraction between them flares to life, Dare pushes her boundaries and tempts her to want things she never thought she could.

The past never dies without a fight, but Dare Kenyon’s never backed down before…

I don’t read MC romances that often, which is a shame because I enjoy them so much! There’s always something so gritty and addicting about MC reads, and that description can definitely apply to Laura Kaye’s Hard Ride. It’s the first book in a brand new series, featuring the Raven Riders MC, a club dedicated to helping those who can’t protect themselves. It’s a suspenseful, sexy read that gripped me – it’s a little slow at times, but otherwise, this is a solid first installment to the Raven Riders series.

After escaping from her father’s abusive control, Haven and her best friend Cora have taken shelter with the Raven Riders. Unfortunately, her father is still out to get her, posting a large bounty for finding Haven and bringing her back to him. Haven has lived a very sheltered life, so all these tough bikers, regardless of how they would never harm her, are a little intimidating. But one man makes her feel different and fires her up like no other. Dare makes her feel safe, protected, and wanted. She’s had very little experiences in life, but with Dare, she finds that she wants to experience all of life… with him.

Dare is the president of the Raven Riders, a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly. He’s vowed to make his club legitimate, but that doesn’t mean that he and his men aren’t deadly. He’s alpha, honorable, loyal, and intense, and he’ll do anything for those under his protection. Sweet and innocent Haven brings out his protective instincts even more, and even though he shouldn’t get involved with her, he can’t help but want her. And soon enough, as his feelings for her deepen, he’ll have to do whatever it takes to make sure her father never harms her again.

“Oh, Haven,” he said, “you have no idea what I’d be willing to do for you if you wanted me to.”

Ride Hard was surprisingly sweet, with all the tender moments between Dare and Haven. But even with all the sweet moments, this book is hot too, so if you love steamy romances, you should definitely check it out. I really enjoyed this one – I didn’t completely love it, since I didn’t connect that well with the main characters, and the story moved too slowly at times, but I still had so much fun reading this story. If you love slow burn, suspenseful MC romances, I recommend Ride Hard!

Zhubaal, fallen angel assistant to the Grim Reaper, has spent decades searching for the angel he loved and lost nearly a century ago. Not even her death can keep him from trying to find her, not when he knows she’s been given a second chance at life in a new body. But as time passes, he’s losing hope, and he wonders how much longer he can hold to the oath he swore to her so long ago…

As an emim, the wingless offspring of two fallen angels, Vex has always felt like a second-class citizen. But if she manages to secure a deal with the Grim Reaper — by any means necessary — she will have earned her place in the world. The only obstacle in the way of her plan is a sexy hardass called Z, who seems determined to thwart her at every turn. Soon it becomes clear that they have a powerful connection rooted in the past…but can any vow stand the test of time?

The Demonica series is one of my favorite PNR series ever. Larissa Ione writes every book in the series with the perfect amount of humor, action, intensity, and sexiness. Z isn’t my favorite of the series, but it’s an enjoyable read nonetheless. If you love the Demonica series, you’ll no doubt have fun with Zhubaal and Vex!

Zhubaal gave up his wings in order to follow the love of his life when she fell from Heaven. Laura died before he could save her, but her soul was reborn onto Earth, and for the past century, Z has been trying to look for her. He even took on the job from Hell (literally), becoming the Grim Reaper’s assistant so he’d be able to see if his love’s soul ever passed through Sheoul.

Vex is an emin, born from two fallen angels, which is unfortunate because both angels and fallen angels will stop at nothing to kill her. She has a special ability to capture loose souls into her body, and she’s been able to sell those souls in the black market, until the market crashes. Now, her only chance at making any money and surviving is to make a deal with Azagoth, the Grim Reaper. And it’s in Sheoul that she meets Z, who she has a mysterious connection with.

Vex had never believed in soul mates, but as her soul touched Zhubaal’s, she knew the truth.
They belonged together.

This book should’ve been the most romantic of the series – the hero stayed faithful his whole life to the woman he loved, and never stopped searching for her… but I found I never really could connect with either Zhubaal or Vex. Z frustrated me at times because of how much he wanted Vex to be his lost love, and it takes a while for him to accept Vex as she is. Still, other than these annoyances, I had a fun time reading Z. I just can’t NOT enjoy a Larissa Ione read! Her sense of humor and her characters always crack me up without fail. I’m glad we get the chance to read Z’s story – now I’m really hoping that we one about Jim Bob!

“You’re mine,” he rasped. “Finally, you’re mine.”

“What’s your name? And what is your business with Azagoth?” Stepping closer, he lowered his voice and looked down at her from his extra foot of height. “And keep in mind that I’m his gatekeeper. You will tell me or you won’t get off this platform.”

She coyly fingered the plunging neckline of her top and batted her jewel-toned eyes. “I’m Vex, and I have a proposition for your boss.”

“I’m Zhubaal, and I need a little more than that.” He narrowed his eyes, refusing to be charmed or seduced. But damn, she really did have nice breasts. “What kind of proposition?”

For a long moment she stared up at him, her ruby lips pressed together in a stubborn line of silence. Just as he was about to send her back to whatever realm she’d come from, she gave up the seductress BS and held out her right arm.

“See these glyphs?” She traced the outline of one of five squiggly black circles with the tip of one amethyst-painted fingernail. “Touch one.”

“If this is a trick––”

“How stupid do you think I am?” she snapped. “If Azagoth is really the Grim Reaper, he’s one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Do you honestly think I’m here to piss him off by screwing with one of his griminions?”

Well, that was insulting. “I’m not a griminion,” he ground out. “Griminions are ugly little freaks who collect souls when a demon or evil human dies. I’m just your standard everyday minion.”

She rolled her eyes. “I know. I was being funny. You’re the Grim Reaper’s minion. Griminion.” She nudged him with her arm. “Come on. Touch me.”

Anxious to be rid of this obnoxious female, he gripped her wrist and pressed his fingers against two––or maybe three––of the circles.

He had no idea how many of the things he touched because the moment his skin came into contact with them, the powerful burn of sheer evil shot through him and knocked the breath from his lungs. Holy hell, what were those glyphs? Malevolence seared his skin and forced superheated blood to flow like lava through his veins as he released her and stumbled backward, his head spinning.

“They’re souls,” Vex said, her voice cutting through his agony. “That’s what you’re feeling. They attached themselves to me, and I think Azagoth might want to take them off my hands.”

Early Review: The Wedding Pact by Katee Robert

The Wedding Pact by Katee Robert

The Wedding Pact by Katee Robert
Series: The O’Malleys #2 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: April 26th 2016
Links: Ebook • Paperback • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert continues her smoking-hot series about the O’Malleys-wealthy, powerful, and full of scandalous family secrets.

Carrigan O’Malley has always known her arranged marriage would be more about power and prestige than passion. But after one taste of the hard-bodied, whiskey-voiced James Halloran, she’s ruined for anyone else. Too bad James and his family are enemy number 1.

Hallorans vs. O’Malleys-that’s how it’s always been. James should be thinking more about how to expand his family’s empire instead of how silky Carrigan’s skin is against his and how he can next get her into his bed. Those are dangerous thoughts. But not nearly as dangerous as he’ll be if he can’t get what he wants: Carrigan by his side for the rest of their lives.

If you love forbidden romances and a well-written mafia story, The Wedding Pact should definitely be on your radar. It’s the second book in the O’Malleys series, though it can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed the first book, and the little teaser in The Marriage Contract for Carrigan and James’ book had me so excited for this sequel! While I liked The Wedding Pact, it was a bit too slow and long-winded for me to fully love it like I wanted to. Still! If you loved The Marriage Contract, I have no doubt you’ll love The Wedding Pact too.

The O’Malleys and the Hallorans are two of three prominent mafia families in Boston, so for Carrigan O’Malley and James Halloran to be anything but enemies is unthinkable. Carrigan is forced to choose a man to marry for the good of her family, while James is trying to step up as the leader of the Hallorans since his older brother’s death. These two star-crossed lovers couldn’t be on more different paths, but try as they might to stay on opposing sides of a brewing war, they always manage to somehow find their way back to each other.

Carrigan was the calm in the middle of the hurricane that was his life. It didn’t make a damn bit of sense because half the time she drove him up the wall, but the second her hand slipped into his, the tightness in his chest loosened, just a little, and he could breathe again.

The Wedding Pact is a great enemies-to-lovers romance. The connection and chemistry between James and Carrigan is fierce, and the forbidden aspect of their relationship makes things even hotter. They keep their relationship a secret from their families, but when it’s just the two of them, they can’t deny their growing feelings for each other. I really enjoyed James and Carrigan’s romance – so much so that I wish there had been less of the mafia plot, which I felt overshadowed the romance too much at times.

“You’re strong and you don’t need a man to lean on.” He cupped her face. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t lean on my. It has nothing to do with need and everything to do with me wanting to be the man who’s by your side every step of the way. Your man, Carrigan O’Malley.”

Katee Robert has written a suspenseful, sexy story in The Wedding Pact. She takes us deep into the mafia world of Boston, and even though I found it a little tedious sometimes, if you love highly detailed mafia stories, this shouldn’t be a problem for you. I loved the sweet ending, and I’m super excited about the setup for the next book. I’m eagerly awaiting Cillian O’Malley’s story next!

Over the Line by Lisa Desrochers
Series: On the Run #2 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: April 19th 2016
Links: EbookGoodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

The USA Today bestselling author of Outside the Lines once again explores love on the edge in an explosive new romance about obsession, betrayal, and a killer attraction.

Lee Delgado never planned on falling in love with the irresistible Oliver Savoca, son of a Chicago crime lord. Considering that their families are rivals, she knew it could never work. And now that both their fathers have been nabbed on racketeering charges, any real chance at a future with the man she loves has been shot to hell. But a greater blow is yet to come.

Not only does Lee learn that a contract is out on her life, she has reason to believe that Oliver is behind the devastating betrayal. Now she’s working closely—very closely—with Federal Agent Sean Callahan to help bring her man down. But however she’s come to feel about Callahan, Lee is still deeply, hopelessly, unabashedly in love with Oliver.

Where that fearless love takes Lee next is beyond her control—but the risk is worth every beat of her heart.

I looove forbidden romances, and I’m a sucker for them especially when the mafia is involved. So Over the Line should’ve been the perfect read for me – and while I enjoyed it, even more than the first On the Run book, it still wasn’t quite what I’d hoped for. Nonetheless, if you love books with action, suspense, chemistry, and the mafia, I would definitely recommend this one. And if you liked Outside the Lines, this sequel will be perfect for you!

Over the Line picks up right where Outside the Lines left off, only this time it’s Lee’s story. If you haven’t read the first On the Run book, I highly recommend doing so before starting this one. Lee may be the second oldest Delgado sibling, but she’s been the caretaker of her family ever since their mother died years ago. Now, with their father/mafia leader in jail and the Delgado children living in Florida as part of the witness protection program, they’re just trying to lay low and move on with their lives. But Lee’s past catches up with her in the form of an ex and her star-crossed love – Oliver Savoca, the son of the man who killed her mother.

“I love you, Lee. I have for a long time. I knew it before you left, but . . . I’ve never been in love before. I didn’t get how fragile it was. I should have told you.” He rolls his head at the room. “All of this . . . everything I’ve done since you left was done with the single-minded goal of finding you.”

Oliver and Lee met in grad school, where they were partners for a class. They both had their own agendas against each other, but late nights and some hot chemistry led to something more, something they didn’t expect but treasured all the same. That was, until Lee betrayed Oliver – but now he’s back and here to collect. But try as they might to remain enemies and on opposite sides of a brewing war, the feelings they had when they fell for each other the first time come rushing back. Now, it’s a constant wonder of, Do they still love each other, or don’t they? Do they trust each other, or don’t they?

“You are the only real thing I have left.” His green eyes darken and his gaze cuts to the heart of me. “I’ve given up all the rest so I could have you. So don’t tell me this isn’t real, Lee. Nothing else is. Only this.”

If you have problems with OW/OM drama, this probably won’t be the best book for you, but I honestly had no problems with it, even though I’m not a fan of that sort of thing. This might have been because I wasn’t completely invested in the romance like I hoped I would be. I really wish we could’ve gotten more of Lee and Oliver when they first met and fell in love – it would’ve made their romance in the present more believable, since they’re mainly operating on lust when they meet again. But I do have to say that the chemistry between these two is ON FIRE. Over the Line was much, much hotter than the first book, which was a pleasant surprise. And Oliver is one seriously sexy alpha-male – I loved how sweet and protective he could be because of Lee!

Overall, Lee and Oliver’s story is a solid second installment to the On the Run series. I might not have loved it, but I enjoyed reading it all the same. It was entertaining, suspenseful, and crazy hot – and the writing is just as incredible as it was in the first book. I’m really hoping for Grant’s story next!
