SOMETIMES YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN . . .

When Jacob was injured in the war, it changed him for life. Now all he wants to do is come home to Cedar Ridge, settle in at his lakeside cabin and get some much-needed peace and quiet. But there’s no peace to be had when he finds a spitfire of a woman camping out on his property. Half the time he’s not sure whether he wants to spank her or kiss–or maybe both. He’s in a dark place and a dark mood, and here’s this wildly hot woman who is also funny and light and may be the balm be needs to soothe his aching soul.

Sophie Marren is pretty much penniless after leaving her abusive husband. She doesn’t have the money to pay rent or the slip fees for docking the boat where she’s been sleeping. She was getting along just perfectly until the good-looking, brooding, I’m-too-sexy-for-myself guy moves into the lake cabin that the slip belongs to. Sure he’s hot as the noon sun with those dark lens and even darker ‘tude, but god forbid she tie herself to another man who’s always telling her what to do. But the more she gets to know Jacob, the more she sees how willing he is to battle for her wounded heart…a battle she might just let him win.

She eyed the bench a long beat but did eventually sit, perching primly as far from him as she could get and yet still be close enough to grab the bottle.

Smart woman.

She took the Scotch and drank. Her eyes watered and she coughed as she handed it to him. With a sigh, she leaned back to study the night sky. Her bared throat was slim and creamy smooth. An unexpected temptation. Remembering the flash of pain and vulnerability she’d unwittingly revealed, and that for whatever reason he’d somehow added to it, he spoke. “I’m sorry.”

She glanced at him as if she’d never heard a man apologize before in her life. “For…breathing?” she asked. “Having a penis? What?”

“You were upset because you didn’t know I was a Kincaid.”

She sighed. “That was just me looking for a reason to be mad at you so I wouldn’t…”

She bit her lower lip, clearly not wanting to go on.

But now he had to know. “So you wouldn’t what?”

“Nothing,” she said. “It’s just that I’m trying to make better choices.”

“Of which I wouldn’t be one.”

“It’s not necessarily your fault,” she said. “It’s that you’re a man.”

“Guilty as charged.”

“And I’m off men right now.”

“And on…women?” he asked with admittedly more than a little fascination.

She rolled her eyes. “I’m on no one, but thank you for proving my point on men.”

“I get that,” he said. “But being off men doesn’t seem to be making you very happy, or sound like a whole lot of fun.”

“Maybe I don’t need fun.”

He understood that. He’d felt the same way since Brett died. “What do you need?” he asked, honestly wanting to know more about her.

Instead of answering, she reached for the bottle. He waited until she met his gaze before letting go.

“Nothing,” she said a little too quickly. “Everything’s…perfect.”

“And your glass is half full,” he said. “So you’ve said.”

But he didn’t believe her. “How about a game?”

“I don’t play games.”

Now, that wasn’t exactly true. Whether she knew it or not, she’d been playing with his head since he’d first laid eyes on her. “Three truths and a lie,” he said.

She stared at him. “As in you tell me three truths and a lie, and I pick out the lie?”

“Yes.”

She considered this. “What do I get if I win?”

“What do you want?”

For the briefest of beats, her gaze dropped to his mouth.

Oh, hell yeah, he thought. Want me…

“My first boyfriend taught me that game,” she said.

“What did the winner get?”

“A kiss.”

Definitely still playing with his head… “Is that what you want, Sophie? A kiss?”

Again she stared at his mouth before dropping eye contact and wrapping that eye-stopping pink robe tighter around her body. “Do you?” she asked.

“Hell yes.”

Her gaze flew to his.

“Problem is,” he said conversationally, “if I kissed you, I don’t think I’d be able to stop.”

Her mouth literally fell open. The pulse at the base of her throat jumped. And she seemed to lose her words.

He went on. “But you should know, I don’t lose. That means you’ll have to tell me three truths and a lie.” And he’d hopefully get to know more about her.

She closed her mouth to bite her lower lip in what could’ve been indecision or excitement. Obviously he was hoping for the latter. “But hey, if you’re not sure you can handle losing, we can just forget about it,” he said.

The challenge lifted her chin and put sparks in her eyes. That’s it, babe. Show me what you’ve got.

“Bring it,” she said.

Al That Jazz by Natasha Boyd © 2016 Natasha Boyd

I can see the struggle on his face. He’s made such a big deal about my sunburn, he’d literally be defying his Hippocratic Oath by denying me relief.

I actually find myself taking perverse pleasure from his discomfort. Why not make this fun? “Fine.” Taking a deep breath, I lock eyes with him and slip my dress strap down on one side. His eyes track the movement. Then I reach for the other and I see his jaw harden.

I sigh and wink at him. “Let’s see what you’ve got, Doctor Butler.”

He meets my eyes, one eyebrow arched, his mouth twisting. “You did always make me want to play doctor, Miss Fraser.”

It takes nano seconds for his words to register and scalding shock to flood my system, and then eons for the surprise to ebb and release my tongue. By that time, Joey has cleared his throat and rolled up his sleeves. He squeezes lidocaine into the palm of one of his strong hands, then uses the other to swing a chair out to sit on.

I swallow some saliva back into my mouth. I didn’t expect him to flirt back.

“Shift around,” he says gently. “So your back is facing me.”

I do as he asks. The sound of the zipper on my sundress going down seems to reverberate around the room like a Boeing engine.

“I don’t think I’ve ever heard you speechless before.” He chuckles, warm and husky just as the cold cream hits my skin. “Is there anywhere else that hurts?” he says into my ear.

Is he serious right now?

The iciness of the cream steals my outrage, and I inhale with the uncomfortable sensation. Then I moan in relief.

Finally, annoyance surges in the wake of his suggestive comments. What the hell is he playing at? Did he seriously just say that? I almost want him to repeat it. Actually why the hell not? “Did you just say I make you want to play doctor? Like sexy doctor? Like, ‘let me examine you’ suggestive weirdness?”

“Shut it.”

“No. I won’t.”

“I preferred you speechless.” He swipes more cooling lotion on my back.

“So let me get this straight. You don’t want me, but the second you hear I’m seeing someone else you start coming on to me?” I keep my back to him though I know he’s done. And feel, rather than hear, his body shift away from me. My zipper slowly rises. He’s quiet.

I scoot around on the seat until I face him, my bare knees knock against his rough jeans. “Coz that’s what you just did, isn’t it?” His eyes are cloudy and brooding and locked on my mouth. His skin is flushed. Why does he have to be so Goddamn sexy?

“I never said I didn’t want you.”

Holy—

I swallow. Speechless for the second time in the space of five minutes.

“But,” he adds. “This—us—just wasn’t advisable.”

I process his words.

What a complete jackass.

Abruptly I stand up in front of him, my dress straps are still down, it makes me feel half undressed. I’m practically standing between his legs I’m so close.

Looking down at him, I narrow my eyes. “Actually, Doctor. I do hurt somewhere else.”

He winces almost imperceptibly. His eyes flick to my chest.

My heart? Is that what he thinks?

Oh, no fucking way.

“Actually …” I lean down and grab his hand and slide it up my dress and between my legs.

Joey expels a shocked breath.

“It hurts right here.”

His blue eyes flare dark as the surprise and arousal stuns him.

I press his hand against my underwear. “Feel like soothing this ache?” I hiss.

I love a good man-in-uniform romance, and I also love the older brother’s best friend trope, so Ignite was right up my alley! This book surprisingly turned out to be more sweet than anything, so if you love light-hearted, small-town, drama-free reads, this is for you!

“I’ve had a thing for you for too damn long, Harper. Always wondered what it would be like if you were mine.”

One night eight years ago, West and Harper shared the best kiss of their lives – but then West hightailed it out of town the next day, leaving Harper brokenhearted and bitter. West has never felt like he belonged in Wildwood, but now he’s back as a mature, hard worker and sexy firefighter… and the first person he sees would be the girl he left behind.

Harper has always been the good girl of their town, but seeing West again seems to bring out the worst in her. With him, she’s a little rude, blunt, emotional, but most of all, she’s passionate. She’s currently in a relationship with a steady guy, but what she feels for him has nothing on the feelings she holds for West. So she has to decide whether to take a leap of faith on West, the boy-turned-man who’s always had her heart, or continue a safe life with no passion.

I really enjoyed this book. It was sexy, fun, and uncomplicated. It’s a little slow in the beginning, but once West makes the decision to fight for Harper and what they have, the pace becomes a lot more enjoyable. Ignite is a wonderful introduction to the Wildwood series, and I definitely recommend it to those who want something fun to pass the time.

West was the beloved bad boy who was now doing good. And Harper had always been Wildwood’s good girl—who’d suddenly gone a little bad.
And being bad with West had never felt so good.

I’m actually SUPER excited for the next book now, which features West’s brother Lane and Harper’s friend Delilah! You get a little glimpse of how these two characters interact in Ignite, and to say I’m intrigued is an understatement. I can’t wait for their book to release!

His knees felt a little wobbly.

Harper was even more beautiful up close. Long hair the color of the sun riding low in the sky, reds and golden browns and strands of blonde that waved past her slim shoulders, with that cute little pert nose sprinkled with freckles. Freckles she’d always hated.

That one night, his last in his hometown, he’d done his damnedest to kiss every single one.

Her dark brown eyes flashed at him and those perfect, delicious, bee-stung lips didn’t slide up in that natural sunny smile of hers. Harper Hill was friendly. Beyond friendly. The entire Hill family had a reputation to uphold in this town and Harper was just as cheerful as all the rest of them. She had a natural way about her, drawing people in, always surrounded by friends—by people who wanted to be her friend, like it was a privilege to bask in her glory.

Right now though, she looked like she wanted to draw and quarter West. Maybe hang him up by his toes so he dangled above the ground, much like he remembered his dad and grandpa doing when they caught a buck during hunting season.

Yeah. He’d never been one for blood sport as a kid or an adult. Harper though? She appeared ready to shoot him dead with just the look in her pretty brown eyes.
