Franka

I remembered that look.

I relished that look.

Not only on my Antoine but any lover I’d had (but, obviously, getting it from Antione was far more rewarding).

It was a look I worked toward, putting great energy and imagination into it, losing myself in these endeavors, feeling free of my name, my history, my secrets, my responsibilities, and reveling in my success as if I’d scaled mountains.

It was my greatest talent outside, of course (as any good Drakkar would excel), honing in on any vulnerability and manipulating it for the greatest possible gain—coin, jewels, furs, favors, silence, information, or simply for amusement.

Seeing the look on Noctorno at that moment, I knew Circe too had performed well (admirably well, I might add, considering her dismal past).

I also recognized—focusing on it keenly—what Circe might have missed, or perhaps what Noctorno hid from her understanding, or simply just sensing, how she came to him.

He was not done.

Oh no.

If she had not given indication she wished him out of her bedchamber, he’d still be in it.

Indeed, he might be in it all night, and not to sleep.

He might have been in it, perhaps, for days.

As these thoughts flitted in my mind, I became aware he’d fully entered the room, was stopped not far from my chair, and was standing, chin tipped down, eyes regarding me with a scrutiny that I found so uncomfortable I actually shifted in my seat.

I ceased this reaction the instant I became aware of it, appalled at myself.

Giving something away so easily? Especially something like discomfiture?

You’ve ruined me, I snapped silently at Antoine.

My dead lover had no rejoinder.

“You okay?” Noctorno asked.

“Am I what?” I asked in return.

His head gave a slight twitch before he went on, “You okay? All right?” His voice lowered. “It’s been a tough day, babe, for all of us. Including you.”

I looked beyond him to the fire, lifting my wine to my lips but not sipping it until after I murmured, “I’m perfectly fine.”

“Yeah, right,” he stated, and the disbelief veritably dripping from his tone made my gaze flick immediately back to him.

This meant I watched as he sauntered right in front of me to the chair accompanying mine, threw his lengthy frame in it and reached for the wine at the table that separated our seats.

He also reached for the extra glass.

These were seats, I shall add, that were turned at corners to each other with a small, round table in between, so  my knee was nearly touching his.

He poured.

It was on the tip of my tongue to share that I had not invited him to attend me.

Alas, I became distracted by his long fingers, and the words died in my mouth.

about the author button

Kristen AshleyKristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Spotlight + Giveaway: Kindle in Motion & Wingmen Inc. series by Rachel Van Dyken

I’m so excited to share some fantastic news from author Rachel Van Dyken about her Wingmen Inc. series and Kindle in Motion! So what exactly is Kindle in Motion and what does it mean for books? I’ll let the author tell you about it herself. 😉

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about Kindle in Motion so I figured, what better way to explain than to email everyone and give you a little run down on how it happened, what it really is, and what we can expect from Amazon Publishing in the future.

When I signed my contract last year for another four books with Skyscape they asked if I wanted to be a part of a new program. And left it at that. Fast forward to a few months later and they approached me with this idea…I of course went, “OH like Harry Potter?” Because really if it can’t be explained without using Harry Potter WHY bother? 🙂 They went over all the specifics but also warned me that because the technology was so new, it was something that could end up backfiring. But I KNEW my readers would dig it, so I was like yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Anything to help make the reading experience better, right? My only concern was, would you be able to turn off this feature if it distracts you, and since you totally can, I had no more hesitation. I’m happy to have 2 of the 6 books in the entire world that have this feature. Basically there are memes and video footage along with crazy graphics and animation while you read. There is no audio feature because well…The audio feature would make it an actual movie and since we just sold the movie rights (WOOHOO!) That would have been a breach of contract.

When you start the book you can easily turn off the feature, some of the feedback I’ve been getting is that it’s too distracting or the actors dont look like people wanted them too–which is all totally fine and it’s gonna happen 😉 So if you are the type who would rather leave it to your imagination then you are more than welcome to just read the plain version.

Okay with all of that out of the way—*takes deep breath* because this feature is so new and because I want to give everyone a chance to experience it, I wanted to host a really short week long giveaway basically giving readers a chance to win a $200.00 Amazon gift card so they can buy ALL the books, not just The Matchmakers Replacement.

Wingman rule number two: never reveal how much you want them.

Lex hates Gabi. Gabi hates Lex. But, hey, at least the hate is mutual, right? All Lex has to do is survive the next few weeks training Gabi in all the ways of Wingmen Inc. and then he can be done with her. But now that they have to work together, the sexual tension and fighting is off the charts. He isn’t sure if he wants to strangle her or throw her against the nearest sturdy table and have his way with her.

But Gabi has a secret, something she’s keeping from not just her best friend but her nemesis too. Lines are blurred as Lex becomes less the villain she’s always painted him to be…and starts turning into something more. Gabi has always hated the way she’s been just a little bit attracted to him—no computer-science major should have that nice of a body or look that good in glasses—but “Lex Luthor” is an evil womanizer. He’s dangerous. Gabi should stay far, far away.

Then again, she’s always wanted a little danger.

ARC Review: Burn Down the Night by M. O’Keefe

Burn Down the Night by M. O’Keefe
Series: Everything I Left Unsaid #3 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: August 9th 2016
Links: EbookGoodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

A battle for control turns explosive as a beautiful con woman takes a bad-boy biker hostage in this edgy, seductive novel set in the world of Everything I Left Unsaid (“Toe-curlingly sensual.”—Katy Evans) and The Truth About Him (“Absolutely one-click worthy”—J. Kenner).

The only thing that matters to me is rescuing my sister from the drug-cooking cult that once enslaved us both. I’ve run cons my whole life, and I’ll use my body to get whatever I need. Max Daniels is the last connection I have to that world, the one person reckless enough to get involved. Besides, now that his brothers have turned on him, he needs me too.

The deal was supposed to be simple: a place to hide in exchange for rescuing my sister. Now he’s my prisoner. Totally at my mercy. But I’m the one captivated. Enthralled. Doing everything he asks of me until I’m not sure who’s in control.

We both crave the heat. The more it hurts, the better. But what if Max wants a different life now, to leave the game . . . to love me? I thought I knew better than to get burned. Now I’m in too deep to pull away. And the crazy thing is . . . I don’t want to.

I really, really enjoyed the first two books in the Everything I Left Unsaid series, so I don’t know why I’m so shocked that I loved Burn Down the Night. I guess I just wasn’t expecting how gritty, intense, addicting, and freaking HOT this book would end up being. I loved the main characters – they’re a bit of anti-heroes, not good guys, but not as bad as they think they are either. The chemistry was seriously on fire between them, too. Can you tell how hooked I got onto Joan and Max’s story?

I needed Max Daniels. Not for Lagan. Not for my sister.
For me.
I saved his life so he could save mine.

If you’ve read the previous two books, then you know how Burn Down the Night starts – with Max unconscious and being kidnapped by Joan. Technically, Joan saves Max from being killed before she kidnaps him, but still, what a great start to a relationship, right? To say their romance is unconventional would be an understatement, to say the least. These two don’t particularly like each other, but they need each other – and they certainly want each other according to their bodies. Joan has Max handcuffed to a bed for the majority of the book, but that doesn’t stop them from getting up to some wicked things – and when I say wicked, I mean WICKED. My cheeks were nearly burning, that’s how hot this book was. If you like steam, you definitely need to experience Max and Joan’s.

“Save your act for other people. The lies and the show—I don’t want it. I want you. Fucked up and crazy. I want you.”

Joan and Max couldn’t be more ill-suited for one another – a con woman on the run, and a bad boy biker ex-leader? But somehow, they start to fall for one another in the time they spend together, and they grow to want more than just each others’ bodies. Their romance is a bit slow, but I felt it moved at the perfect pace for the two of them.

This is one of those books with characters who show themselves in all their raw honesty, which I loved about Joan and Max. They are unapologetic about who they are, the take-them-or-leave-them sort of people. I don’t usually come across these kinds of characters, so they were refreshing and unique to read about.

We’d burned down the night and our old lives with it.
But we’d built something so much better in its place.

Burn Down the Night was the perfect dark and gritty read to get me out of my slight book funk. I adored the main characters – they’re both so broken but still tough and tenacious. Survivors no matter what gets thrown their way. You definitely need to add this book to your TBRs if you like gritty and intense reads – once you’re hooked, you won’t want to put it down!

4.5 hearts
