Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.

His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.

Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?

I’ve kind of adored Penny Reid ever since reading her Elements of Chemistry series (one of my favorites of the year!). Her stories are just so compelling yet so down-to-earth – I love them! Truth or Beard was a highly anticipated read for me (because, hello, BEARDS!!!!) and Penny Reid didn’t let me down. Truth or Beard is a fun, sexy, hilarious read with an amazing cast of characters (those Winston brothers will be the death of me) and I can’t wait for more!

Jessica James has always had a crush on the friendlier, more charming of the Winston twins. When she was a girl, she had hearts in her eyes for Beau, all while saving her glares for the broodier, more annoying twin, Duane. But of course, Duane, in that classic way of pulling on the pigtails of your crush, has always loved Jessica James. But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica questions her true feelings for Duane and whether or not she’s had a crush on the wrong Winston twin all along.

I was always running after her, but this time I wasn’t going to let her get away.

I adored Jessica and Duane. They were characters that felt so real to me. I felt for Jessica and her dreams of traveling the world. She has wanderlust, and she’s saving up for a few years until she can leave her small town and explore the world. Duane, even knowing the limited time he has with Jessica before she leaves, still decides to pursue the girl he’s loved his whole life. He keeps his heart guarded though, so that when the time comes for Jessica to leave, he won’t be left with a broken heart. But the two fall fast and hard for one another as they date and spend time together (kissing and doing other stuff…), so how can the two of them possibly continue their relationship when one is meant to travel the world and the other has an auto shop he has obligations to take care of?

Jessica wasn’t going to break my heart.
I was going to break hers.

Duane and Jessica have a time limit to their relationship, but that doesn’t stop them from steaming it up in the time they have together. They have some seriously sexy times that had me grinning and fanning myself. Duane is a hottie with a beard! BUT, he also says some awesomely sweet, amazing things to Jessica that had my heart swooning – Duane is honestly the perfect package!

“You’re a siren who doesn’t need to sing.”

Oh! Did I mention that this book is also so freaking hilarious? I was laughing so much while reading, most especially because of the Winston brothers. CLETUS! Oh my, Cletus is one special Winston brother. He’s the quirky, dorky nerd and so lovable – I’m keeping an eye out for his book. In addition to Duane, Beau, and Cletus, there’s also Jethro, Billy, and Roscoe. Six hot bearded brothers = book boyfriend heaven!

I’d once overheard my daddy tell my momma that the six Winston boys had inherited their father’s ability to charm snakes, the IRS, and women.

What brought this book down, though, and why I can’t give Truth or Beard five awesome hearts was because the whole other subplot about the local motorcycle club. The brothers have drama with some bikers that puts them and their loved ones in danger. This part of the book felt weak though, and I just wasn’t that into it. I felt kind of just ‘eh’ about it – it wasn’t badly written or anything, but it just didn’t get my heart my heart racing as much as I wanted it to.

In spite of weak biker subplot, Truth or Beard is still a fantastic read. You get to swoon over six sexy, bearded brothers, so what’s not to love? Of course, I can’t gloss over Penny’s fantastic writing, with her intelligent prose and witty dialogue. Her books are always described as ‘smart’ and I can’t argue with that. Overall, Truth or Beard was a book that was SO much fun to read. It made me laugh, swoon, ache – it’s the type of book that wrings emotions out of you, and I highly recommend it.

Penny ReidSEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

They don’t play for the same team. Or do they?

Jamie Canning has never been able to figure out how he lost his closest friend. Four years ago, his tattooed, wise-cracking, rule-breaking roommate cut him off without an explanation. So what if things got a little weird on the last night of hockey camp the summer they were eighteen? It was just a little drunken foolishness. Nobody died.

Ryan Wesley’s biggest regret is coaxing his very straight friend into a bet that pushed the boundaries of their relationship. Now, with their college teams set to face off at the national championship, he’ll finally get a chance to apologize. But all it takes is one look at his longtime crush, and the ache is stronger than ever.

Jamie has waited a long time for answers, but walks away with only more questions—can one night of sex ruin a friendship? If not, how about six more weeks of it? When Wesley turns up to coach alongside Jamie for one more hot summer at camp, Jamie has a few things to discover about his old friend…and a big one to learn about himself.

Warning: contains sexual situations, skinnydipping, shenanigans in an SUV and proof that coming out to your family on social media is a dicey proposition.

I adored this book so hard, y’all. I mean, I had no doubt I would – I really enjoyed Sarina Bowen’s other M/M romance, The Understatement of the Year, and Elle Kennedy is now one of my FAVORITE authors because of her Off-Campus series. So the two of them writing a book together? Sweet perfection. Both of their writing styles meshed perfectly well together, and they’ve created a book that is pure goodness. And Him is so, so, so good. This was the best combination of sweet, funny, and sexy.

I love friends-to-lovers romances, and when you throw hockey in, I’m a goner. Wes and Jamie have been best friends since attending hockey camp each summer together. But after a naughty bet, lines are blurred and Jamie is cut off completely from Wes, never hearing from him for four years. Now in the midst of their hockey careers, they come into contact for the first time in years, and everything they used to feel for each other at camp – friendship, camaraderie, love – comes rushing back.

I have the same damn weakness I’ve always had. It’s still there as I stare up at the big screen. As I watch Jamie Canning stop another dizzying slap shot. As I admire the grace and deadly precision with which he moves.
My weakness is him.

I loved how Wes and Jamie clicked, both in the past and the present. They make the best of friends, and eventually the best of lovers. But it takes a while to get there – while Wes is an openly gay hockey player, Jamie doesn’t even realize his feelings for Wes have grown past friendship until he gets jealous over Wes flirting with another man. Soon enough, they can’t resist one another, and the chemistry between them flames hotter than ever.

Our mouths fit together so perfectly. Every time we kiss, I fall even more in love with him, and it has nothing to do with sex or lust. It’s him. His closeness and his scent and the way he soothes me.

I LOVED Wes right from the start. He’s hilarious and sweet, and my heart was aching for him and his unrequited love for Jamie. Jamie, though, I took a bit longer to warm up to. But once I witnessed the two of them together, everything fit. There’s just an incredible, solid foundation of friendship that love grew so naturally between them. My heart just wanted to burst with happiness whenever Jamie and Wes were together.

The best part of Him (besides the HOT M/M sex, of course) was the depth of Wes and Jamie’s characters. Wes has been in love with Jamie for years, and now he’s given the chance to show that love physically and emotionally, if not verbally. Jamie has his own journey of self-discovery, realizing things about himself he never even contemplated. He comes to terms with the fact that he enjoys both men and women, though that doesn’t diminish one bit of the feelings he has for Wes.

“Loved you every summer since I was thirteen years old. Love you even more now.”

Him was a simple and quite uncomplicated read. While it didn’t WOW me or make me feel any super intense emotions, I still loved it. It’s an easy, light, fun read with some crazy hot sexy times between two best guy friends. It’s a feel-good romance by two fantastic authors I really wish will write more books together. I’ll honestly read anything Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy write together, M/M or no M/M, because Him was so well executed with the dual POVs. I highly recommend this book for romance or M/M fans!

Series: The Original Heartbreakers #2 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: July 28th 2015

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter is back with a sizzling Original Heartbreakers story featuring a troubled playboy and the woman he can’t resist…

Beck Ockley is ruthless in the boardroom…and the bedroom. He’s never been with the same woman twice, and vows he never will. With a past as twisted as his, meaningless sex keeps the demons at bay. His motto: One and done. No harm, no foul.

Harlow Glass is the most hated girl in town. The beautiful artist is penniless, jobless and homeless. When she sneaks into Beck’s home—her ancestral estate—for food, she’s shocked by his early return…and her immediate, sizzling and intense attraction to him.

For the first time in Beck’s life, he can’t get a woman out of his mind. All too soon, friendship blooms into obsession and he’ll have to break her heart…or surrender his own.

Um, WOW!!!! I went into The Hotter You Burn without having read the previous book or prequel, since it can be read as a standalone, but O.M.G. – I unexpectedly adored everything about this book so much!!! I LOVED this book – it almost felt like it was tailor-made for me. Everything about this just WORKED, brought so many emotions out of me, and I loved it. Props to you, Gena Showalter, for writing such a gem of a book! Hilarious, wickedly sexy, and heartwarmingly sweet, The Hotter You Burn has just become one of my favorite reads of the year!

“You’ve got me tied in so many knots I’m not myself anymore.” He nipped at her ear. “And damn me, but I’m starting to think that’s a good thing.”

Billionaire playboy Beck Ockley is a serious manwhore – he’s never been with a woman twice and his painful past keeps him from ever falling in love. But the second he lays eyes on Harlow Glass, stealing a pie right from his home, this woman becomes his, even though he tries to believe that he can’t fall in love with her. Beck honestly should’ve been a clichéd hero, but to me, he wasn’t. He was just such a lovable character and I connected with him right from the start. While he can be sweet, funny, and charming, what made me fall in love with him was the intensity of his emotions for Harlow. He’s the kind of guy who refuses to believe he’s in love, but it’s so clear to everyone else through every word and action he makes that he’s completely head-over-heels in love with her.

”You want to know another secret? You are one of the best things to ever happen to me, Harlow. So sweet.”

Harlow was a heroine I completely ADORED. I can’t remember the last time I loved a heroine this much! Gena Showalter wrote her in such a way that Harlow had my heart breaking and my stomach hurting from laughing all at the same time. Harlow used to be the town bully back in high school. It was a sad cycle for her – her father verbally abused her, so she verbally abused the people around her to make herself feel better. But after something tragic happens to her, she changes her ways for good. She’s now the most hated girl in Strawberry Valley, but she puts on a brave face when people hurt her for what she did to them, and she makes amends to everyone she’s wronged. My heart was aching for this girl – she’s done such a 180 that it’s hard not to admire her for changing her life, ending up homeless, jobless, and penniless, and still carrying on. After being caught breaking and entering and stealing in Beck’s home, which used to be her childhood home, things start to look up. Beck does the complete opposite of punishing her and instead gives her a job and a home. But what Harlow really wants from Beck is his heart, and she’ll do anything to have it.

I fell so freaking hard for the both of them. Harlow was just a gem of a heroine, and I was falling madly in love with Beck. What was completely unexpected was the amount of humor in this book. I was laughing so hard at so many things that Beck and Harlow say and do – funny characters make it that much easier to love them, and I loved both of them something fierce. And oh my, Beck and Harlow are also incredibly HOT together! There’s a fierce chemistry between them that had me fanning myself. Beck is definitely an alpha-male, and Harlow was putty in his hands.

“There is nothing I won’t do for you, and nothing I won’t do to keep you. You’re it for me. My one. My only.”

Now that I think about it, the intensity of the book kind of reminds me of Tessa Bailey’s books (which I LOOOVE), but without so much dirty talk (not that there ISN’T any…). But not to worry, even if you haven’t read any of Tessa Bailey’s books, I’m here to tell you that you need to get to reading The Hotter You Burn ASAP. It’s an AMAZING read that I fell so hard for. I loved the characters and the writing and all the emotions this book brought out of me. Gena Showalter has written an absolutely delightful, feel-good, heartwarming romance that I can’t recommend enough!

“Beck,” she whispered.
“Yes, baby.”
“My favorite thing about you is your heart. It’s softer than I ever realized, and I treasure it.”

In this sexy, suspenseful New Adult novel, a young woman hiding from her criminal past is taken captive by her ex-boyfriend, the ultimate bad boy.

Evie is about to embark on the perfect life. Beautiful, poised, and engaged to a rising business star, she fits the part of trophy wife perfectly, except for one thing: her entire identity is a lie.

Five years ago she created a new identity for herself, but it all crashes back when something she witnessed years ago comes back to haunt her. Now she’s in danger of losing more than her social status.

Determined to protect the careful life she’s built for herself, Evie doesn’t want anything to do with Riley, the criminal for hire who broke her heart years ago. But Riley has other ideas. He’s never forgotten Evie, and to protect her, he steals her away. Hidden from the world, sparks begin to fly as old memories resurface and their passion reignites.

This is the first book I’ve read from Brighton Walsh, but I know it won’t be my last. Although I didn’t particularly LOVE the story, the beginning was super intriguing and overall I still really enjoyed it – what made the book for me was the author’s fantastic writing, which is spot-on for a suspenseful novel. I seriously fell in love with it – the writing was what had me hooked in the beginning and what kept me reading even when towards the end of the book things started to fall flat.

The premise of the book was seriously calling to me. A heroine who’s living a lie, on the run from a dangerous man, PLUS a second chance romance? Hell yeah, I was all in. And for the majority of the book, I dug it. I was intrigued by Evie, wondering what the hell was going on with her and why she was living as a different identity for the past five years. And when her cover is blown, Riley enters the story, enters back into Evie’s life. I was hooked onto their second chance romance. If I had to rate this book solely on the romance, it would get a perfect 5. I LOVED Riley and Evie together, because it’s clear that they’re meant to be together. They had such a sweet yet powerful relationship all those years ago, and they’re still connected even after five years.

“Anything can happen, except when you’re with me. No one is getting to you when I’m here. No one is getting through me. I’d have to be dead first.”

I fell so hard for Riley. I loved that we get his POV along with Evie’s, so we can see his inner turmoil at seeing the girl he loved as a teenager, the girl he thought died five years ago, back in his life again. He’s definitely my second favorite part about Exposed, right below the writing. Riley is protective, loyal, and sexy as hell in his determination to make sure Evie is safe – and the best part is that he can protect her, with the skills he learned during the five years he sought vengeance for Evie’s supposed death. Riley and Evie have some great chemistry and I loved the two of them together.

He was my past, the tiny flicker of light in a sea of darkness. He was my present, when everything was jumbled and uncertain, but where I’d be able to figure it out if I was with him. And I knew, with utter certainty, he was my future.

Evie was an intriguing heroine. She’s fierce, independent, and very cautious about starting anything with Riley again since she’s not sure she’ll be able to make it out alive after all is done. There’s also an aspect about her character that was heartbreaking that the author handled very well. I predicted what it was, but it wasn’t something I really wanted to be able predict. Evie is a strong heroine, though sometimes too independent, but I really liked her character up until a certain part near the end of the novel.

There are many layers to the story, what with someone after Evie, but I felt like the suspense, the action, was underwhelming. Evie and Riley spend the majority of the book holed up, hiding in an apartment, so not much happens in action-wise, though this is where their relationship regrows. So while I loved the romance, I didn’t get the amount of suspense that I wanted.

This book should’ve been perfect for me – it’s a second chance romance, my absolutely favorite trope, and the story was super intriguing, but the climax of the book was a bit disappointing, mainly because of how utterly annoyed at the heroine I was. She’s not stupid, but she does make a stupid decision at the end all in the name of ‘independence’ that had me rolling my eyes. At that point of the book, I was just not interested in the story anymore.

So would I recommend this book? Yes, because I still loved about 80% of the novel. The writing is flawless, and the characters were well-developed. Even with the couple problems I had with Exposed, I still really enjoyed reading it, and would definitely recommend it for the writing and second chance romance.

Audiobook Review: Easy Charm by Kristen Proby

Easy Charm by Kristen Proby

Easy Charm by Kristen Proby
Series: Boudreaux #2 (full reading order below)
Audiobook Publication Date: July 8th 2015
Length: 7 hours and 31 minutes
Narrated by: Sebastian York & Rachel Fulginiti
Links: Audible • EbookPaperback • Goodreads
Source: I received an audiobook in exchange for an honest review

Gabrielle Boudreaux, the youngest of the Boudreaux clan, is a single mother of her young son, Sam. Running a Bed and Breakfast at the family plantation house at the edge of the Mississippi River, Gabby loves her inn, her boy and her family. She meets new people every day, and takes pride in the house and land that has been in her family for more than five generations. Blessed beyond measure, she’s also lonely, although she would never admit that to anyone. Until Rhys O’Shaughnessy walks through her door, brooding and wounded and the sexiest thing she’s ever laid eyes on.

Rhys has been at the top of his game as a major league pitcher for the Chicago Cubs for more than ten years. Baseball is in his blood. But when he tears his rotator cuff and has to sit a season out, he retreats to Inn Boudreaux at the recommendation of his cousin, Kate, to heal and work toward building his shoulder back to perfect shape with only one goal in mind: to return to the game he loves. But he didn’t plan on being utterly charmed by a devastatingly beautiful woman and her baseball-loving son.

When Rhys’ shoulder has healed and he’s given the chance to return to his team, will he leave the family he’s come to love behind, or will he stay with Gabby and Sam?

I’ve never read a book from Kristen Proby before, but now I’m thinking I should, because I was taken away by how sweet Easy Charm was. And, of course, Sebastian York is one of the narrators, so how could I not enjoy this audiobook? I may not have completely loved this book, as I didn’t connect with the story as much as I wanted to, but the sweetness of the romance and fantastic narrators made up for it and I ended up enjoying listening to Easy Charm very much.

As each book in the Boudreaux series can be read as a standalone, I didn’t need to read Easy Love before getting into Easy Charm. This second book features Gabrielle Boudreaux, the youngest of the Boudreaux siblings. She’s the darling daughter of the family, so she’s very much loved and protected. So when she finds herself pregnant, and the father not wanting anything to do with her and their child, she has the support of her family. Now, she’s a fierce woman, a protective mother, and the owner of a successful inn. I didn’t really connect well with her character, but it didn’t stop me from liking her as a person. I really admired Gabby as a mother, and I adored her son Sam. He’s so sweet, and Gabby is the perfect loving mother to him.

Rhys O’Shaughnessy is a famous baseball player who’s been injured, so he needs to take a break to heal his wound. His cousin recommends he stay at Gabby’s inn, and when he shows up, he’s immediately taken by her. There’s an intense chemistry between them, and Rhys is sweet and determined in his seduction of Gabby. He intends to win her and her heart, but what he doesn’t expect is to fall for her son, too. Rhys is such a good guy. He’s charming, protective, and utterly smitten with Gabby and Sam. He was a bit too flawless for my taste, but I could still see how perfect he was for Gabby.

Easy Charm is an easy, angst-free, fairly predictable book, but the narrators certainly made it enjoyable. I loved listening to Sebastian York’s voice, and Rachel Fulginiti did a great southern accent. They were both just really easy and nice to listen to. I’d listen to anything Sebastian York narrates, of course, but Rachel Fulginiti really took the spotlight in the book for me.

I’m rating 3 hearts for the story, and 4 for the narration, so 3.5 hearts for Easy Charm!
