Deal with the Devil is Orphan Black meets the post-apocalyptic Avengers by USA Today and New York Times bestselling author duo Kit Rocha.

Nina is an information broker with a mission—she and her team of mercenary librarians use their knowledge to save the hopeless in a crumbling America.

Knox is the bitter, battle-weary captain of the Silver Devils. His squad of supersoldiers went AWOL to avoid slaughtering innocents, and now he’s fighting to survive.

They’re on a deadly collision course, and the passion that flares between them only makes it more dangerous. They could burn down the world, destroying each other in the process…

Or they could do the impossible: team up.

This is the first book in a near-future science fiction series with elements of romance.

I’ve been wanting to read Kit Rocha’s fantasy/post-apocalyptic/dystopian romances for years. I own a bunch of their Beyond books in audio but for some reason haven’t gotten to them yet. But when I saw they were writing a new dystopian romance series, about mercenary librarians of all things, I knew I had to get my hands on it. Deal with the Devil is the first in this epic new series and I enjoyed it! It’s action-packed and there is plenty of romance to go around. It’s a solid first installment, with great world-building, and I already can’t wait to read more from this series.

Reading Deal with the Devil reminded me of how much I enjoy dystopian books and that I don’t read enough of them regularly! I liked the way the authors set up this futuristic, survivalist world where it’s every man and woman for themselves. The characters are intriguing (again, MERCENARY. LIBRARIANS. Who don’t hesitate to kill to protect those they care about!) and I was honestly surprised, in the best way, by how much fun they were. While there are serious moments, there is still a ton of great banter between our Librarians and Silver Devil soldiers. Nina and her librarian squad are kickass (she literally kills multiple men in the very first scene). Knox and his band of supersoldiers were fascinating to read about, and the ticking time bomb on their lives had me on the edge of my seat.

I’m so glad I finally got the chance to read one of Kit Rocha’s books. They balanced out the suspense, action, and romance perfectly well in this and I cannot wait for more romances between the Librarians and Devils. I do wish we’d gotten more of the librarian aspect of the series title in the book, but hopefully we’ll get more in future releases.

Death Doesn’t Bargain is the second historical fantasy title in New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Deadman’s Cross series. Where Deadmen tell their tales, and every soul is damned or redeemed by the final choices they make.

The Deadmen are back…

But so are the demons who have broken free of their eternal prison and are bent on mankind’s destruction. The worst of the lot is Vine, determined to claim their lives for taking hers. She will see the world burn…and has the perfect lure to destroy them all. One of their own.

Kalder Dupree has never known a day of mercy. Born to the cruelest of mer-races, he sacrificed himself for his crew and is in Vine’s hands. He expects no mercy or rescue.

Yet Cameron Jack is determined to set Kalder free. As a Hellchaser, it’s her calling, and she cannot allow even a not-so-innocent to be tortured for an act of kindness that spared her damnation.

To defeat evil, it sometimes takes an even worse evil, and Cameron is willing to do whatever she must to make this right. If Vine thought she had her hands full before, she hasn’t seen anything nearly as powerful as Cameron’s resolve.

The second installment in the Deadman’s Cross series is jam-packed with action and drama. You’ll definitely need to have read the first book, Deadmen Walking, before starting this one, as it continues with Cameron Jack, Kalder Dupree, Devyl Bane, and Vine. We get to delve deeper into this historical fantasy world Sherrilyn Kenyon has created, learning more about the pirates, demons, and monsters that inhabit the seas. If you enjoyed the first Deadman’s Cross book, you’ll want to get your hands on this great sequel.

After losing Kalder, the Deadmen are determined to find and get back his soul. He’d sacrificed himself to save Cameron and her brother – and now Cameron wants to set Kalder free. They are our main couple, and their romance is just as intriguing to read as the action part of the plot. They’ve got plenty of demons in their past that they need to overcome in order to be together, and those demons don’t make it easy. We learn much more about the history of Kalder’s Myrcian heritage, with plenty of plot twists to keep the action going. There really wasn’t a dull moment in Death Doesn’t Bargain.

I’m amazed at the world SK has created with this series. Yes, there’s a lot of info dumping, but once you get into the groove of reading, you get a better understanding of the mythology behind this world. Now, I haven’t read SK’s other popular Dark-Hunter series, but fans of DH will definitely love seeing a surprise cameo of Acheron in this book. I know there is also a lot of overlap between the DW and DH series, so you’re sure to catch that if you read both series!

Pirates, magic, mythology, romance, and action – is there more you can ask for in a historical fantasy? If you’re interested in the genre, this series is definitely one to check out. I can’t say that I’ve ever read anything quite like it! The book ends in quite the cliffhanger, but I’m excited to see where SK will take us with the next installment.

Deadmen tell their tales . . .

To catch evil, it takes evil. Enter Devyl Bane―an ancient dark warlord returned to the human realm as one of the most notorious pirates in the New World. A man of many secrets, Bane makes a pact with Thorn―an immortal charged with securing the worst creations the ancient gods ever released into our world. Those powers have been imprisoned for eons behind enchanted gates . . . gates that are beginning to buckle. At Thorn’s behest, Bane takes command of a crew of Deadmen and, together, they are humanity’s last hope to restore the gates and return the damned to their hell realms.

But things are never so simple. And one of Bane’s biggest problems is the ship they sail upon. For the Sea Witch isn’t just a vessel, she’s also a woman born of an ancient people he wronged and who in turn wronged him during a centuries long war between their two races―a woman who is also sister to their primary target. Now Marcelina, the Sea Witch, must choose. Either she remains loyal to her evil sister and almost extinct race against Bane and his cause, and watches humanity fall, or she puts faith in an enemy who has already betrayed her. Her people over the totality of humanity―let’s hope Bane can sway her favor.

This is the first of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s adult books that I’ve read. I’ve enjoyed her Chronicles of Nick series, but her Dark-Hunter series has been on my TBR forever. When I heard that she was coming out with a new series featuring pirates(!), I had to take a chance on it, mainly because I don’t have enough pirate books in my life. Deadmen Walking was interesting, to say the least. It has a lot of potential, and I can see how the series has the chance to get even better. As it is the first book in the trilogy, there is a lot of info-dumping, but besides that, if you’re in the mood for something epic and magical and action-packed, I’d definitely recommend this one!

Starting Deadmen Walking, I was honestly a little confused about who the main characters were. We’re introduced to Cameron Jack, a woman disguised as a man who is trying to find her missing brother. Her only hope is in Devyl Bane, a powerful, notorious pirate. Little does she know, but Devyl is captain of a crew of cursed men – Deadmen. The Deadmen are creatures brought back from their deaths by Lucifer’s son and given the chance to redeem their souls by being the gatekeepers that protect humanity from ancient monsters.

It turns out that our main couple is Devyl and Marcelina (Mara) the Sea Witch, who is Devyl’s ex-wife’s sister. The two of them have a twisted, dark, bloody past, but with the close proximity that comes with saving the world together, there is bound to be some chemistry between them. But the romance is just a small part to the overall action and adventure.

There is a lot going on in this first installment of the Deadman’s Cross Trilogy. The author sets up much of the world-building to prepare for the rest of the series, so I have a feeling it can only get better from here. I also realized while reading this that it has plenty of connections to Sherrilyn Kenyon’s other series – those connections went over my head, of course, but fans of the author will probably enjoy all the cameos that are in this book. If you love SK and are familiar with her work, then you should definitely check this new series out! And if you love fantasy, action, and a hint of romance, I’d say you should give this a try.
