A rogue ruined . . .

He is the Killer Duke, accused of murdering Mara Lowe on the eve of her wedding. With no memory of that fateful night, Temple has reigned over the darkest of London’s corners for twelve years, wealthy and powerful, but beyond redemption. Until one night, Mara resurfaces, offering the one thing he’s dreamed of . . . absolution.

A lady returned . . .

Mara planned never to return to the world from which she’d run, but when her brother falls deep into debt at Temple’s exclusive casino, she has no choice but to offer Temple a trade that ends in her returning to society and proving to the world what only she knows . . . that he is no killer.

A scandal revealed . . .

It’s a fine trade, until Temple realizes that the lady—and her past—are more than they seem. It will take every bit of his strength to resist the pull of this mysterious, maddening woman who seems willing to risk everything for honor . . . and to keep from putting himself on the line for love.

My god. My. God. What is Sarah MacLean doing to me? I simply cannot function when I’m reading one of her books in the Rules of Scoundrels series, because I become obsessed with the characters, the romance, the story–everythingwhile reading. I adore this series. I am completely, 100%, over-the-moon in love with this series. One Good Earl Deserves a Lover and No Good Duke Goes Unpunished are absolute gems (A Rogue by Any Other Name was pretty great too). I don’t know how Sarah MacLean does it, but the owners of The Fallen Angel are to. die. for. And Temple… He makes me swoon so friggin’ hard. And yep, I have another book boyfriend to add to my already long list.

I can’t even begin to do this book justice. It’s just… too amazing. The story blew me away, the romance was the divine, and I fell so hard for the characters. I honestly had no idea I would love historical romances as much as I love this series. No Good Duke just cemented my love of the genre. Sarah MacLean is a genius! I don’t know how you do it Sarah, but DON’T EVER STOP!

Okay, okay. So if you’ve read the previous two books in the series (and if you haven’t, get right to it now!) and loved them just like me, you were crazed to read Temple’s book. It’s the Killer Duke’s book! And have you read that synopsis? Like, hot damn. I knew Sarah MacLean would give us another incredible, heart-wrenching romance, and yes, she delivers! Quite perfectly, if you ask me.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure Sarah could top One Good Earl (book 2). I loved loved loved Cross so damn much that I didn’t think that any of the other characters in their group of four could beat him. And while I can’t say Temple is better, I can say that Temple is absolutely on par with Cross. If you make me choose between them, I won’t be able to! So, you know, I totally call dibs on the both of them. Cross AND Temple… Be still, my heart.

Temple is known as the Killer Duke because he woke up in his father’s bride’s room covered with blood. He remembers nothing from the night before, and Mara, the bride, had disappeared. Temple was accused of her murder, and for the twelve years since her death, Temple has been haunted and wrecked with guilt. He feels he doesn’t deserve anything good since he truly believes he’s a murderer. And he’s a fighter as well. He’s huge, bigger than Bourne, Cross, and Chase, and Temple’s job is to fight the patrons of the gaming hell. If a gambler loses everything, he has a chance at gaining everything back if he can defeat Temple. But no once ever does. Temple is undefeated.

And in the midst of this new life Temple has created, Mara reappears. She’s not dead, which means Temple didn’t kill her, and he’s not the Killer Duke. And understandably, Temple is pissed as hell. He was accused of murder, and all of a sudden, the girl he supposedly killed comes back? And only to gain back the money her brother lost while gambling? He’s pissed and he wants revenge. And so the two go head to head all the time and sparks fly. The amount of sexual tension is off the charts too, and Sarah MacLean is a master at building the tension between the two.

“Don’t you see, Mara.” He leaned in and whispered, “You’re mine, now.”

I always liked Mara throughout the entire book, even when I should have hated her on behalf of Temple. She had her reasons for her deception, and she pays a heavy price for it. I mostly felt sympathetic towards her, because she is not welcomed by Temple or his friends. And yet she never gives up, never stops trying to gain back her brother’s lost money to help her orphanage. Her kids in the orphanage (and her pig, Lavender, the most adorable thing ever) are the most important things to her, and there’s so much more depth to her than we could have realized.

He’d made her laugh and smile. He’d made her feel beautiful.
For the first time in her life.
For the only time in her life.

I was honestly smiling and grinning so hard every time Temple and Mara see each other, because I couldn’t wait to see how the Sarah MacLean would make them fall for each other. And when they do fall in love, slowly but surely, it’s a bit heart-wrenching, because you don’t see a happily ever after in sight. You want one for them of course, but things become complicated. Revenge is what fuels Temple, and taking care of her orphanage is what fuels Mara. With Mara willing to do whatever it takes to earn back the lost money, including spending time with Temple (there might be some kissing involved), and eventually coming out and confessing to the public about the truth of that night she was ‘killed’, and Temple knowing that once she confesses, he’ll lose her forever, neither Temple nor Mara can imagine themselves living happily ever after with each other.

“You want me.”
“Want does not begin to describe the way I feel about you,” his low voice promised. “Want is nothing compared with the level of desire I have. With the desperation I feel. With the way I long for you.”

But, oh god, the journey along the way to their HEA is perfection. They learn more about each other, fall more in love with each other when they shouldn’t, and there’s so much excitement going on, both in their romance and within The Fallen Angel. There are some seriously intense fight scenes that were so gripping and had me on the edge of my seat. And the tension and angst built up so much that this book made me TEAR UP. I rarely ever cry for books, and yet No Good Duke took my breath away and made me tear up a little for Temple and Mara. I laughed, I cried, my heart ached, and I couldn’t have imagined a better story for Temple and Mara.

“I love your laugh. I want to hear it every day. I want to be through all this darkness and devastation. I want happiness now. I want our due. I want what we’ve deserved from the beginning.” He paused and stared deep into her eyes, willing her to understand how much he loved her. “I want you.”

Look at what I found on Sarah MacLean’s blog! We’re finally going to find out Chase’s mysterious secret, and I for one CAN’T WAIT!

Readers of No Good Duke will learn Chase’s secret.

The deep, dark secret that would ruin Chase, The Angel and all my scoundrels if it got out.

The deep, dark secret that no one (except for a very small band of merry men and women at Avon/HarperCollins) knows, because the bit of Temple’s book that reveals the secret was redacted from all early versions of the book. No reviewers know it. No early readers know it.

Everyone who reads the book when it’s released on November 26th will learn Chase’s secret together. And then, there will be spoilers. So watch out. 🙂

Are you excited? Like Sarah said, even though I’ve read the ARC, I still don’t know Chase’s secret! The epilogue was cut off, and AH the wait is killing me. I know for sure what I’ll be doing on No Good Duke’s release day. 😉

If there’s a historical romance book you need to read, it’s No Good Duke Goes Unpunished. And One Good Earl Deserves a Lover. And A Rogue by Any Other Name. Read. These. Books. They’re romance at its finest. And you will fall in love with everything about them. I can’t get enough of this series! I’m so, so unbelievably excited for Chase’s book now! It’s finally coming! Soon.

5 hearts of course! Loved it with all my heart. (You have no idea how happy I was to read an ARC of this book. So THANK YOU to the publisher, Avon!)

review

For Real was short, fun, and sweet! I loved the concept of the story, and while I didn’t end up loving the book, I still really enjoyed reading it. The synopsis totally lured me in, and I’m glad I read the book. Shannon and Jett are adorable together, and their love story was endearingly awkward and heartwarming to read.

Shannon is a very straight-laced, follow-the-rules kind of girl. She studies, does her homework, and doesn’t do anything that is out of her comfort zone, which includes being with guys. So she’s a virgin at twenty-one. Shannon’s friends try to devise a scheme to get her to lose her virginity, but they take things a little too far. I honestly didn’t really like her friends, especially when they started taking things too far, and pushed Shannon to find a random guy to lose her virginity to. Luckily, she bumps into Jett, and the two of them pretend to have slept together and become a couple to get Shannon’s friends off her back.

Jett was a really interesting character to read. He’s absolutely adorable, and he’s got the best tattoos ever! He’s so sweet to Shannon, and they call each other Fake Girlfriend and Fake Boyfriend all the time. They also make up the Ten Rules of Fake Dating, one of which includes no touching that’s not incidental, but of course the two of them break that rule. They’re attracted to each other, but most of all, they’re really great, close friends. They spend time with each other, and slowly, they start to fall in love with each other, which is not part of the agenda of Fake Dating.

My favorite part of the book was the awkwardness. Is that weird? Well, to me, the awkwardness of the dating, of them being together, was what felt honest and real. The start of their relationship, despite it being fake, felt real. It’s not perfect, they are awkward, they sometimes don’t know what to do with themselves, and I loved reading it. And it doesn’t hurt that Jett is so freaking adorable and sweet all the time! I really liked this tattooed, mohawked boy with a heart of gold.

I wasn’t expecting For Real to be as short as it was, but it was still fun to read. Short and sweet is a perfect way to describe the book. If you’re a fan of contemporary romances, you should definitely give Chelsea M. Cameron a try.

“Ross,” she said, swallowing hard to clear the lump from her throat. “I realize I’m not the traditional nanny, and I know I was your last choice for a babysitter. But I can’t do this anymore.”

His gaze flickered from her mouth to her throat.

Her bones began to melt. All at once, her skin seemed to tighten, and her stomach began to fall as her brain fogged over.

He shook his head. “You’re absolutely right. I can’t keep doing this, either.”

“What?” She narrowed her gaze suspiciously.

“Looking at you.” His voice dropped. “Staring at your lips. And wondering if they can possibly taste as good I remember.”

excerpt

Ronnie McGuire

“You got a light?” a voice asks from the shadows to my left.  The accent sounds familiar, but when I turn to look, I know sure as shit that the face is not.  I’d remember a face like that.

The girl in question raises both her brows at me and holds out a cigarette.  It hangs limply between us.

“Have we met before?” I ask, because unless she’s a rogue fan who’s managed to escape the horde of bodyguards Milo’s hired, then I am plum dumb fuck out of luck when it comes to placing her.  And I know everybody, and I mean everybody on this damn tour.  I’ve slept with half of them, and fought with the rest.  I chit chat with the best, and I know who’s who – from the lowliest roadie to the most infamous tattooed self-proclaimed badass.  I slip my lighter out of my jeans and fire her up.

The girl snorts and raises her bug-eyed sunglasses up with her other hand, teasing me with a hint of bright blue eyes and a little crinkle between her eyebrows.

“I sure as shit hope so, Mr. McGuire,” she says and drops her shades.  “I gave you a blow job in a utility closet once upon a time.”  She kisses the words out, letting them slip and slide over her lips, so that I can feel each and every one of them caressing over my cock.  My body responds, much to the mystery’s girl amusement.  She laughs at the erection I don’t bother to hide and takes a drag from her cigarette.  “I was told that if I wanted information, I ought to come to you.”  She smiles at me and blows a fresh cloud of smoke into the hazy air.

The crowd is tearing up the venue on the other side of the cement wall behind me.  It sounds like they’re getting ready to start a riot or something, shouting Turner’s name, Naomi’s, screaming for that backstabbing bitch, Hayden.  When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a rockstar.  One, because I liked music, and two, because I was lazy as hell and thought it would be an easy job.  Could not have been any more wrong about that.  If I knew back then that I’d make it this far, I’d have probably gone for a nine to five and not because I’d like it, but because it would take less gusto, less courage.  Those two things have been in short supply for me for a long, long while.  It’s only recently that I’ve been able to grab onto them again, and already, they’re being drained from me like pus from a septic fucking wound.

The shouting of the audience is giving me a headache, and the lack of drugs in my system is actually making the words less clear.  Detox is a bitch.  I rub at my temple with my fingers and blink at the girl, hoping to hell she’ll give me her damn name before these people surge up and rip us all to pieces, eat our flesh and sacrifice us on some homemade alters in their parents’ basement.

“Yeah,” I tell her, sniffling and running my hand across my face.  “I’m pretty much the gossip guru of the camp.  What’s up?”  I look the girl up and down, examining her small round face, her waif like body and her plump lips.  I’d like to get more than a blow job from her, preferably in a state of mind where I can remember it.  How do I not know this chick?  I wonder, tilting my head to the side.

Her hip is cocked out and her mouth is twisted in a wicked smile.  She might be a foot or more shorter than I am, but she looks miles tall.  She’s got a confident air around her that commands attention, especially from somebody as lazy as me.

I smoke my cigarette and wait for her to respond.

“Come on, ya wanker, you seriously have no clue who I am?”  She drops her cigarette to the cement floor and crushes it out with her purple velvet heels.  Fancy.  I lean forward and put my hand on the wall next to her head.

“No, but I’d like to find out.”

There’s no way Lydia–oldest and most responsible of the tight-knit Rodriguez clan–is going to let her nosy family find out about the uncharacteristic work screw-up that landed her a paid suspension. To keep busy and avoid panic, she enrolls in a life enrichment class. The first guest speaker is a handsome artist with a wicked smile and eyes that melt right through her.

Even the “ice princess” can’t help but feel an immediate spark that lights her blood on fire.

Isaac Ortiz is unquestionably the sexiest man Lydia has ever met. The talented son of a famous Spanish artist, he’s constantly moving from one new glamorous city to another, working if and when the muse visits him.

He also has a stare that makes Lydia’s heart race and hands that look more than capable of making her scream with pleasure. She shouldn’t be attracted to this free-spirit who makes all his own rules–but she is.

There’s just one hiccup….Isaac is nineteen.

Lydia has lived her entire life firmly inside the box, and being with a younger man is definitely outside the safe confines she enjoys.

So why can’t she stay away from him? And why is she seriously considering his proposition to take off to a place she’s never been…just because?

When Lydia is invited back to work with a cleared name, she should be overjoyed.

But the reality is, Lydia doesn’t know what anchors her life anymore…or if she wants to be anchored at all. Should she travel the world with Isaac? Or continue down the road that she’s worked long and hard to pave for herself? Choosing one means losing the other, and Lydia isn’t sure if she’s ready to drift with the current that’s pulling her by the heart.
