Add to Goodreads

From USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author L.J. Shen comes a new, standalone romance about first loves, betrayal and loss.

Not all love stories are written the same way. Ours had torn chapters, missing paragraphs, and a bittersweet ending.

Luna Rexroth is everyone’s favorite wallflower.
Sweet.
Caring.
Charitable.
Quiet.
Fake.
Underneath the meek, tomboy exterior everyone loves (yet pities) is a girl who knows exactly what, and who, she wants—namely, the boy from the treehouse who taught her how to curse in sign language.
Who taught her how to laugh.
To live.
To love.

Knight Cole is everyone’s favorite football hero.
Gorgeous.
Athletic.
Rugged.
Popular.
Liar.
This daredevil hell-raiser could knock you up with his gaze alone, but he only has eyes for the girl across the street: Luna.
But Luna is not who she used to be. She doesn’t need his protection anymore.
When life throws a curveball at All Saints’ golden boy, he’s forced to realize not all knights are heroes.
Sometimes, the greatest love stories flourish in tragedy.

God. I don’t even know how I feel about this book, if I’m being completely honest. Broken Knight is raw, emotional, gutting – every word you can think of that means a hit to the feels, perfectly describes BK. I enjoyed it, but at what emotional cost? The part near the end had me so conflicted, because I don’t know whether I loved it or hated it. And of course LJ Shen would do this to her readers – I love and hate her equally for doing this to us! LOL.

They used the word smitten because batshit crazy wasn’t cute. But everyone knew I was smitten with chicken wings and vintage Tumblr porn, not with Luna. With Luna, I was in fucking everything. Love. Lust. Obsession. Take your pick.

Finding out who Luna would end up with, Knight or Vaughn, has been a question since Pretty Reckless released. Well, maybe even before then. But now that Broken Knight is here, we all know that Luna’s hero is the one and only Knight Cole, her very best friend, protector, and love. Luna and Knight have a very unconventional friends-to-lovers romance. They grew up together, the mute and the popular, charming jock, and have been in love with each other since forever, but don’t want to risk losing their friendship for more. But it’s Knight’s last year of high school and Luna’s first year of college, and Knight doesn’t want to wait anymore. He wants to claim the one woman he knows is meant for him… but Luna doesn’t make it easy. And because Knight gets hurt in the process, he wants to hurt Luna back.

I loved Luna’s character. She goes through a whole transformation throughout BK and I couldn’t help but be so proud of her by the end. Knight makes her go through some pretty awful things – there is a lot of annoying OW/OM drama. It’s immature, over-the-top, angsty… everything you expect from such young characters who are trying to grow up. But I loved Luna and Knight was such a mini-Dean I couldn’t help but slowly grow to love him too.

“There was never any doubt you were a Cole, Knight. You weren’t a choice; you were destiny.”

The main reason why I can’t give this full 5 stars is because I feel like Luna and Knight’s romance was overshadowed by more of the heavier, emotional aspects of this book. Knight goes through substance abuse because he is dealing with his mother’s illness. Because of this, BK felt more like Knight’s story than Luna’s, which was a little disappointing since I loved her character so much. But just because the romance was overshadowed doesn’t mean the story itself was bad. It was well-written, with great character development, and I truly couldn’t put the book down. The good, the bad, the ugly, all of it is beautifully written and I applaud LJ Shen for doing so.

If you enjoyed Pretty Reckless, you will most likely enjoy Broken Knight. They are similar in terms of angst and drama. BK can be read as a standalone, but I’d suggest reading Ruckus and Scandalous from the Sinners of Saint series to get a better sense of Luna and Knight’s families. Right now, I can’t wait to get my hands on Vaughn’s book, and I’m crossing my fingers that his heroine is who I hope it will be!

Now here’s an excerpt from Broken Knight! ❤

Right now I wanted to just be here in silence with my best friend. And somehow, I don’t know how, but Luna sensed it. So we sat there for what felt like two hours but was probably a lot less, until I opened my eyes again. Her eyes were closed, too. I watched her for a while.

When she opened her eyes, it felt like she took something away from me.

“Let’s jump,” she said.

“I’m quite fond of my limbs, Moonshine.”

“Stop being such a big baby.”

“Big, quarterback baby who just finished a football season in one piece and would like to keep all his body parts intact.”

She crawled out of the treehouse and settled on the branch. It was thick, but I doubted it could carry my muscular ass for more than a few seconds before snapping. I rolled my eyes and settled next to her. She slipped her hand in mine.

“Three, two, one.”

It was a short, sweet way down.

She enjoys the simple things in life, like spending time with her family and friends, reading, HBO, Netflix and internet-stalking Stephen James. She reads between three to five books a week and firmly believes Crocs shoes and mullets should be outlawed.

Review: Blood Truth by J.R. Ward

Blood Truth by J.R. Ward
Series: Black Dagger Legacy #4 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: August 13th 2019

Source: I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Savior brings you the next sizzling and passionate paranormal romance in the Black Dagger Legacy series.

As a trainee in the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s program, Boone has triumphed as a soldier and now fights side by side with the Brothers. Following his sire’s unexpected death, he is taken off rotation against his protests—and he finds himself working with Butch O’Neal, former homicide cop, to catch a serial killer: Someone is targeting females of the species at a live action role play club. When the Brotherhood is called in to help, Boone insists on being a part of the effort—and the last thing he expects is to meet an enticing, mysterious female…who changes his life forever.

Ever since her sister was murdered at the club, Helaine has been committed to finding the killer, no matter the danger she faces. When she crosses paths with Boone, she doesn’t know whether to trust him or not—and then she has no choice. As she herself becomes a target, and someone close to the Brotherhood is identified as the prime suspect, the two must work to together to solve the mystery…before it’s too late. Will a madman come between the lovers or will true love and goodness triumph over a very mortal evil?

If you know me, then you know that I adore the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and couldn’t be happier about a spinoff series called Black Dagger Legacy. The BDB series was one of the first PNR books that I’d ever read about seven years ago, and it’s still going strong – the series and my love for it – today. We’re up to seventeen books in the BDB series and four books now in the BDL series. I’ve enjoyed the previous three books in this spinoff series and while I can’t say that Blood Truth is my new favorite, it was amazing being back in this addicting world of alphas and vampires.

In Blood Truth, we get Boone’s happily ever after. Boone is one of the mentees in the Black Dagger training program run by the original BDB boys. I liked Boone but never really connected with his story nor his heroine, Helaine. Their romance unfortunately didn’t shine for me like the previous romances did in the series. I was intrigued enough by the plot about mysterious murders that Boone and Helaine are involved in to keep reading, but I was more looking forward to glimpses of Vishious and Butch. V is one of my favorite original brothers, so of course I’d love anything related to him.

I feel if parts of Blood Truth had been cut down, making this a shorter book, the romance could have worked better. Unfortunately, the main characters fell too fast and the book was too long, which equals a dragging story. Still, I love JR Ward’s particular style of writing and don’t think I’ll get tired of it yet. I am very much looking forward to the next BDB book, which is about Syn, who we get to know a little about in this book, and well as the next BDL book, which is about Rhage’s half-brother!

Review: Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center

Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center
Series: Standalone
Publication Date: August 13th 2019
Links: EbookHardcoverPaperbackAudioGoodreads
Source: I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she’s seen her fair share of them, and she’s a total pro at other people’s tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to give up her whole life and move to Boston, Cassie suddenly has an emergency of her own.

The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie’s old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren’t exactly thrilled to have a “lady” on the crew―even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the infatuation-inspiring rookie, who doesn’t seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can’t think about that. Because love is girly, and it’s not her thing. And don’t forget the advice her old captain gave her: Never date firefighters. Cassie can feel her resolve slipping…and it means risking it all―the only job she’s ever loved, and the hero she’s worked like hell to become.

Katherine Center’s Things You Save in a Fire is a heartfelt and healing tour-de-force about the strength of vulnerability, the nourishing magic of forgiveness, and the life-changing power of defining courage, at last, for yourself.

I’ve been hearing incredible things for Katherine Center ever since her last book How to Walk Away released, so when I heard about Things You Save in a Fire, I knew I had to read it! Especially when the heroine is a firefighter. I ended up LOVING this book. It was my first read from this author but it absolutely won’t be my last. I even had to immediately go and buy a copy of How to Walk Away as soon as I finished so I could get more of Katherine Center’s writing!

Even though I’m a romance all day kind of girl, there are still some wonderful Women’s Fiction exceptions that truly blow me away, and this book is one of them. The story focuses on Cassie being the new girl at the firehouse she’s just transferred to, so she can live closer to her sick mother. She knows how much of a “boys club” it is in any firehouse and is more than prepared to show her new team that she’s an incredible firefighter. Alongside her is a newbie she calls Rookie, and even though Cassie has sworn never to date a fellow firefighter, there’s something about Rookie that she can’t help but be charmed by.

Katherine Center’s writing is fantastic. It sucked me into Cassie’s life, her tremulous relationship with her mother, her friendship and blooming romance with Rookie, and her strength and empowerment as a female firefighter. There’s so much about forgiveness and healing as well, everything just stuck with me even after I turned the last page. Things You Save in a Fire is a beautiful, heartfelt story that is definitely going on my list of favorite 2019 reads. I’ve now become a huge fan of this author and I can’t wait to read more from her!

Early Review: Say You Still Love Me by K.A. Tucker

Say You Still Love Me by K.A. Tucker
Series: Standalone
Publication Date: August 6th 2019
Links: EbookPaperbackAudibleGoodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

The bestselling author of The Simple Wild and Keep Her Safe and “master of steamy romance” (Kirkus Reviews) delivers a sizzling novel about an ambitious and high-powered executive who reconnects with her first love: the boy who broke her heart.

Life is a mixed bag for Piper Calloway.

On the one hand, she’s a twenty-nine-year-old VP at her dad’s multibillion-dollar real estate development firm, and living the high single life with her two best friends in a swanky downtown penthouse. On the other hand, she’s considered a pair of sexy legs in a male-dominated world and constantly has to prove her worth. Plus she’s stuck seeing her narcissistic ex-fiancé—a fellow VP—on the other side of her glass office wall every day.

Things get exponentially more complicated for Piper when she runs into Kyle Miller—the handsome new security guard at Calloway Group, and coincidentally the first love of her life.

The guy she hasn’t seen or heard from since they were summer camp counselors together. The guy from the wrong side of the tracks. The guy who apparently doesn’t even remember her name.

Piper may be a high-powered businesswoman now, but she soon realizes that her schoolgirl crush is still alive and strong, and crippling her concentration. What’s more, despite Kyle’s distant attitude, she’s convinced their reunion isn’t at all coincidental, and that his feelings for her still run deep. And she’s determined to make him admit to them, no matter the consequences.

K.A. Tucker wrote one of my favorite books of 2018, The Simple Wild, so to say I was excited for her next contemporary romance would be an understatement. She knows how to write stories that will appeal to your emotions and heart, which is exactly what happened with Say You Still Love Me. Reading this book was like an emotional roller coaster I never wanted to get off of. If you love second chance romances that will hit you in the face with summer feels and nostalgia, read this book.

Second chance romances are my favorite, and Say You Still Love Me hit all the right buttons for me. The main characters met and fell in love at summer camp as teenage counselors, but Kyle never contacted Piper again after that one summer. Thirteen years later, Piper has just received control of her father’s company and she needs to prove to her dad and her employees that she’s the right fit for this multi-million dollar company. Just when things are looking up, her past love shows up as the new security guard at her office building, and feelings resurface. It’s almost as if the decade that passed without each other never happened. The privileged, wealthy girl is still very much in love with the boy from the wrong side of the tracks.

I LOVED these Piper and Kyle. You can feel the absolute heartbreak, the longing, the adoration that these two still hold for each other. They might not have gotten on the right foot during their reunion, but over time I couldn’t help but swoon over how clearly the two worship each other. We get some great juxtaposition between alternating chapters of past and present, with the past chapters set in summer camp. We can see Piper and Kyle falling in love for the first time alongside them relearning each other in the present and falling in love all over again. This kind of storytelling reminded me a lot of another 2018 favorite, Love & Other Words by Christina Lauren, so if you liked that book, you’ll probably like this one too.

Say You Still Love Me made me feel nostalgic over summer camp and I never even WENT to summer camp. K.A. Tucker made that camp setting come to life in this book, and it’s almost as if it’s another character itself. Which made this the perfect summer read. This is a romance that will hit you in the feels and I can’t recommend it enough!

Early Review: The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai

The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai
Series: Modern Love #1 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: August 6th 2019
Links: EbookPaperbackAudibleGoodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Alisha Rai returns with a sizzling new novel, in which two rival dating app creators find themselves at odds in the boardroom but in sync in the bedroom.

Rhiannon Hunter may have revolutionized romance in the digital world, but in real life she only swipes right on her career—and the occasional hookup. The cynical dating app creator controls her love life with a few key rules:

– Nude pics are by invitation only

– If someone stands you up, block them with extreme prejudice

– Protect your heart

Only there aren’t any rules to govern her attraction to her newest match, former pro-football player Samson Lima. The sexy and seemingly sweet hunk woos her one magical night… and disappears.

Rhi thought she’d buried her hurt over Samson ghosting her, until he suddenly surfaces months later, still big, still beautiful—and in league with a business rival. He says he won’t fumble their second chance, but she’s wary. A temporary physical partnership is one thing, but a merger of hearts? Surely that’s too high a risk…

Alisha Rai is a wonderful contemporary romance author. I love her love stories and her diverse characters. Her Forbidden Hearts series is FANTASTIC. So I had high hopes going into The Right Swipe and I wasn’t disappointed! I enjoyed this one SO much. It’s very steamy and the dating-app rivalry aspect was fun. It has its fluffy moments, but there are also so many good meaningful, emotional moments that made this book a well-rounded read.

The series is called Modern Love, which I think fits perfectly. The Right Swipe is all about feminism, technology, dating apps, and the whole culture and lingo that comes along with it. Rhiannon is the CEO and founder of one of the most popular dating apps, though she herself is cynical in love. The last time she used her app Crush, there was a possibility of something more, except he ghosted her after their first meeting. That is, until he shows up all big and gorgeous as the new spokesperson for her rival company’s new campaign, a company she wants to buy.

I adored Samson, who is the sweetest, most respectful hero ever. He had a good reason for ghosting but he’s determined this second time around to win back Rhiannon’s trust and work his way into her heart. Rhiannon is a ball-buster CEO, but she’s also flawed and quick to make snap judgments. She’s not the easiest heroine to love in the beginning, but the more I read her, the more I understood and felt for her. She’s an empowering heroine I admired so much.

There are some great discussions about assault in the workplace as well as CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) with Samson’s family history of football. These topics as well as Rhiannon’s goal of buying her rival company almost overshadows the romance, but I didn’t even care, because they’re so well-written and relevant in real life. Alisha Rai did an amazing job at writing such a complex, multilayered story.

I’m SO ready for the next Modern Love book, which is about Rhiannon’s best friend. I’m highly invested in all of these characters and I can’t wait to see how they’ll turn out! Oh, and if you loved Forbidden Hearts, you get to see some lovely cameos at the end of The Right Swipe!
