Everything done in darkness, will eventually be brought into the light.

I ran, but all it did was keep me one step ahead of my past. I tried to start over; new name, new identity. But you can’t change your soul.
A fresh start at college was just what I needed. For a while, it worked. I was the party girl, the one that seemed confident, but it was a lie.
When guys kissed me–I felt only pain.
When they touched me–Nothing but fear.

Deep inside, every girl wants to be the beauty in the story, to find someone that will see you as their world.
But the truth? I was the beast. And as much as I wanted redemption, I wasn’t fool enough to think I’d ever get it.
Until he walked into my life.

I wasn’t prepared to fall for someone. My scars were too deep, the wounds too raw. But he offered me peace, he offered me security. I should have known it was just another lie–I should have known that falling in love with my professor was a bad idea.
But I was powerless to stop myself from falling.
And he was powerless to catch me.

Because the darkness finally caught up to me, and as fate would have it, a cruel twist almost bled me dry. But I’m stronger than I knew. I’m stronger than you think.
You think you know my story, but you don’t….after all everyone has Shame in their lives– and I’m no longer afraid to show you mine.

review

Ooooh!! Shame was such an addicting read! I’m so glad to have finally read Lisa’s story!

Shame always comes.
And you’re about to know mine…

Shame is the third book in the Ruin series, and though it can be read as a standalone, I’d recommend you not read it as one. The other characters from the previous books feature heavily in Shame (Wes and Gabe!), and you get to know Lisa through a different light in the previous book.

This book has a whole mesh of genres–there’s some mystery and suspense, some forbidden teacher-student romance, and some dark, heart-wrenching topics in Shame. When I finished this book, it felt like I’d been through the wringer. I was mentally exhausted after reading Shame–there was just SO much going on, it nearly felt like I couldn’t keep track of it all. I liked the book well enough, but I didn’t LOVE it. But for Rachel Van Dyken fans, you most definitely should enjoy Shame. It’s like her other books–you will be heavily sucked into the story and utterly addicted to the characters.

“The broken pieces are the prettiest ones, Lisa. The demons, the proudest scars.”

Shame is Lisa’s book, and it turns out that this girl has such a tragic past. I don’t want to spoil any part of her story because I feel that it’s best to go into Shame blindly, but I will say that there so much more to Lisa than meets the eye. She has a haunting, dark past that she tries to run away from, but of course the past has a way of catching up. Her shame makes her feel unlovable, but it’s only when Tristan enters her life that things start to change… for better and for worse. Because not only is Tristan Dr. Blake, Lisa’s professor, he’s also connected to her past.

The entire time I was reading Shame, I was biting my nails, just waiting for when the truth would come out. Nothing good could come from Tristan and Lisa getting together, but everything felt right when they were.

I wanted her. It wasn’t right; it was wrong, and for the first time in my life, I wanted the wrong. I wanted the bad. I wanted it more than truth. Give me the lie. Just give me her.

We get both Tristan and Lisa’s POVs in Shame, which was definitely something I enjoyed. Tristan and Lisa were a hot couple–they had an intense chemistry that only burned hotter because of how forbidden it was. I love forbidden romances, and Rachel Van Dyken wrote this aspect of the story very well. It was nail-biting, heart-pounding, intense!

Add in the fact that Lisa has a dangerous stalker on the loose, you get the wild ride that is Shame. It was a bit overwhelming at times for me, but somehow, instead of making me tired of the characters, Rachel Van Dyken made me addicted to them. I wanted to keep knowing what would happen next–Shame was an exciting book from start to finish.

Aaand, for fans of the series, you get TONS of Wes and Kiersten, Gabe and Saylor time. I was so glad to see those two couples again!

3.5 hearts! A bit hectic, but still so, so good!

I closed my eyes and leaned my forehead against hers. A shaky breath escaped her lips. “I’m going to kiss you now.”

“Are you trying to prepare me or ask permission?” she whispered, her voice beckoning me like a siren’s call.

“Both.” My lips hovered near hers. “I figure it’s only fair.”

“Fair?” She pulled back slightly. “How so?”

“Ten thousand.” I angled my head and watched the pulse jump on her neck. “That’s how many nerve endings, on average, are in your lips. Consequently, when your body anticipates pleasure, the build-up is the best part. Imagine, those ten thousand nerves are swelling, allowing blood to surge through them in anticipation of… what?” I swept my tongue across her lower lip and whispered, “Of being touched. I ask permission, not because I’m being a gentleman. It’s actually the complete opposite. I ask permission so your brain anticipates the pleasure before I’ve ever even touched you.”

I tasted her lower lip again and abruptly dipped my tongue into her mouth. Then just as quickly retreated. “The human body is an instrument. Know how to master it… and well…” I let my voice drop as I moved my hands slowly to her shoulders and tugged her body flush against mine. Our mouths met softly at first. I deepened the kiss, memorizing her taste, knowing I wouldn’t experience a kiss like this again in my lifetime. The way her scent, her soft moans destroyed my body, wrecked me from the deepest part of me, was nothing short of life-altering.

And I’d like to think I’d kissed a lot of women.

I’d studied the psychology of sexuality.

I was an expert in pleasure.

But she was schooling me, absolutely wreaking havoc on every logical thought as her soft whimper cascaded over me. Blood surged through my body as it tightened with awareness at her proximity.

She pulled back, her lips swollen. “That was… not a good enough warning.”

Laughing softly, I cupped the back of her head and gently drew it toward mine and kissed her again, angling my lips differently, searching her, consuming her, drawing pleasure from her lips as if it was my life goal to discover every single secret she owned.

Her arms wrapped around my neck. She was shy; she didn’t push against me, didn’t wrap her legs around me or moan into my mouth like I was having sex with her rather than kissing her.

My hands moved down her corset to her hips, and I lifted her into the air and walked her backward toward the brick wall. The whole time, our masks collided. In frustration, I ripped hers off, then mine. The shadows of moonlight hid our faces as I kissed her harder, losing myself in her.

Her nails dug at the back of my neck as she jerked my head harder. Groaning, I let her fall to the ground as I placed my hands on the brick wall to keep myself from ripping the dress from her body.

Shouting started from the ballroom.

“Ten, nine…!”

“Eight,” I whispered against her mouth. “Seven.”

“Six.” She sighed, her breathing labored as her tongue found mine again. “Five.”

“Four, three.” I pulled back and trailed kisses down her neck.

“Two.”

We broke apart, both breathing heavy. “One.”

People burst out onto the balcony as the fireworks started, lighting up the sky. And our faces.

And the only thing I could say as she gasped in horror was “Oh, shit.”

Chasing Abby Playlist

review

Hope: The biggest four-letter word in the English language. It’s bigger than despair. Bigger than resentment. Bigger than skepticism. Four letters that, when combined, can hold a broken heart together for eighteen years.

I’m wiping tears from my face!!! What an emotional, heart-wrenching conclusion to the Shattered Hearts series. I honestly had no idea this book would be so emotional enough that it would make me cry. I RARELY cry for books, and the fact that Chasing Abby did that–well, this is a book you don’t want to miss.

It’s been eighteen years since Chris and Claire’s first child, Abby, was born. During this time, Chris and Claire have gone on to create an even bigger, loving family. Abby, on the other hand, has just been waiting for the day she can finally know the truth of her existence. It’s a gut-wrenching, heartfelt ride for both Abby and her parents once past and present collide.

Chris and Claire have never forgotten the baby they had to give up and welcome Abby with open arms. They have so much hope that Abby will love them as much as they love her, but they also have a great fear that she won’t. Abby is understandably wary and reserved when it comes to the Knights. When Abby finds out she was adopted, she feels so out of place, out of her depth. The one question that keeps running through her mind is, Why did they give her up?

I feel… like I’m being carved into pieces: one piece for my mom and dad, one for the Knights, one for Caleb and my friends. How about me? Which piece of me do I get to keep?

All her life, Abby has been treated delicately because of the hole in her heart. There’s no doubt her parents, her adoptive ones, love her, but once Abby finds out that they keep secrets from her, a rift forms between her and her parents. The one constant she has is her boyfriend Caleb, who has an unwavering love for her.

Once Abby goes to see the Knights and is told the truth behind her adoption, she also falls in love with the Knights. There’s Chris, Claire, Jimi, Chris Jr., and Ryder. The Knights have a beautiful family that is so full of love. Chris and Claire play a huge part of Chasing Abby, of course, so fans of the Shattered Hearts series will definitely be happy with this book. It was so great seeing them older and settled in their family.

Caleb is a new character. He’s Abby’s boyfriend, and he’s the one who stole my heart. He was just beautiful, inside and out. His love for Abby was clear as day–he takes care of Abby, but doesn’t treat her as something delicate. He sees her strength and loves her for it. His character warmed my heart–he was really the perfect other half for Abby.

There are various POVs and various plot lines in Chasing Abby, and although sometimes it was jumping back and forth a bit too much for me, I still enjoyed this book so much. I was hooked to the pages–I was so excited to read Abby’s story, and once I started, I couldn’t stop. It’s a story about love–how love is always enduring and never-ending. Fans of the Shattered Hearts series will fall in love all over again once they read Chasing Abby.

Chapter One

Two months after

THE HAIRS ON MY ARMS stand on end the moment I step inside Fidelity Bank in Raleigh. As if I can feel every time my parents walked through here over the past eighteen years. See the ghost of their footprints trailed across the speckled tile.

Caleb squeezes my hand as we head for the line of patrons queued up in front of the teller windows. I want to smile at him to show him that everything is okay, but I’m too nervous. My heart is pounding like a snare drum inside my chest. My fingers begin to tingle and I know I should stop and take a few deep breaths, but I can’t stop moving toward that line. I wriggle my fingers a little and Caleb tightens his grip, stopping in the middle of the floor as he recognizes the signs.

I look up into his green eyes and his eyebrows shoot up as he draws in a deep breath. I copy him, sucking in a large breath through my nostrils then letting it out slowly through my mouth. He does it a few more times and I follow along until the tingling in my fingers is gone. Then I blink my eyes to stanch the tears. It’s not fair to Caleb that he has a broken girlfriend. He deserves a girl with a healthy heart who can keep up with his lust for life.

“Better?” he asks, his voice soothing and hopeful.

I nod and he kisses my forehead. “Thank you.”

What is it like having a defective heart? Sort of like having a defective TV that only displays a few channels. You’re forced to listen to your friends talking about all the cool shows they’ve been watching. Shows you’ll never be able to watch. And you try to pretend you’re perfectly happy with your defective TV, but everyone knows you’re just trying to be a good sport.

Sports. That’s one thing you can’t watch on a defective TV. I learned that when I was thirteen. That also happens to be the age I learned about the safe-deposit box that brought me to Fidelity Bank today.

“I can help the next person in line.”

I look up and the woman behind the bulletproof glass is giving me that impatient, eyebrows-raised look. I step forward with Caleb and slip my driver’s license into the curved slot on the counter.

“I’m here to… to look at my safe-deposit box.” Look at? She must think I’m crazy.

She takes my driver’s license and swipes it through a machine. She types in a few commands, then she looks back and forth between the picture on my ID and my face.

“Do you have your key?”

“Yes,” I reply quickly as I begin digging in the front pocket of my jeans for the small silver key my father gave me two months ago.

I slide it into the slot and she smiles. “You can hold onto it.” She slides my ID back to me and I take both the card and the key back. “Just give me a moment. I have to go get my supervisor to help you.”

She disappears behind a curved wall and comes back with a man in a suit who’s sifting through a gaggle of keys on a chain as he walks. They arrive at the teller window and the man smiles at me.

He nods to his right. “This way, ma’am.”

Ma’am? I’ve never been called that before. I guess this is what it feels like to be an adult.

We reach an unmarked door that buzzes softly before it’s pulled inward. The man with the keys smiles as he waves us inside. He closes the door behind us, then he leads us to an enormous circular vault door. He slips a key into a lock, then he places his thumb on a print reader. A soft beep sounds and he enters a code on a touchpad. A heavy click sounds inside the door and he turns the wheel to open the door and pull it out.

The vault door opens onto a corridor, which runs perpendicular. Straight ahead of us is a room where another heavy, rectangular vault door stands open, revealing a narrow room lined from floor to ceiling with brass safe-deposit boxes. I look right and see more vault doors leading to other places. The man with the keys leads us forward to the room with the safe-deposit boxes. There aren’t any tables, just a single plastic chair with metal legs pushed up against the back wall of the narrow room. I may need that.

“Do you know which box is yours?” the man asks.

I look up into his dark eyes and my mind blanks, so Caleb speaks for me. “Fifteen-five-zero-eight.”

I nod in agreement and the man smiles as I hold up my key, still unable to speak.

He leads us to the middle of the room and taps a box on the left. “This is it.” He begins walking back toward the door. “Go ahead and take your time. When you’re ready, just press this button right here and someone will come back to let you out.”

I nod again. “Thank you.”

He nods as he closes the rectangular vault door, closing us into the room. My fingers are beginning to tingle again, but I don’t wriggle them. I don’t want to worry Caleb.

I hand him the key. “You open it.”

“Do you want me to look inside and tell you what I see?”

“Yes, please.”

He looks at me for a moment, then he heads for the back of the room. He carries the chair back to me and pats the seat. I sit down and try to resist the urge to wring my hands.

“Deep breaths, Abby,” he reminds me.

“Just open it. I need this over with.”

He quickly slides the key into the lock and turns. He pulls box 15508 out of the slot and I lean forward to put my head between my knees. I don’t want to see until I know what’s in there.

“It’s a memory card and… Holy shit.”

“What?” My head snaps up, but I can’t see inside the box from this angle. “What is it?”

His eyes are wide, but I can’t tell if he’s excited or terrified.

“Caleb! Answer me. What is it?”

“It’s… There are some pictures in here.”

“Pictures? So… what? Why is that shocking?”

His Adam’s apple bobs in his throat as he gulps. “It’s not the pictures that are shocking… It’s who’s in the pictures.”

“What? Let me see.” I stand up to get a look at the contents of the brass box, but Caleb quickly slides it back into the slot. “What are you doing?”

“You asked me to tell you what I saw before you see it.”

I slap his arm in frustration. “Then tell me, damn it!”

“Abby, calm down.”

He looks into my eyes with that stern look that only Caleb and my dad can pull off.

I take a deep breath and nod. “Okay, I’m calm. What’s in the box?”

“It looks like… your biological father is… Chris Knight.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “What? Is that supposed to be a joke? Because that is not funny at all. Just tell me what’s inside the box.”

He’s not smiling as his eyes lock on mine. “This is not a joke.”

The silence is so absolute, I can hear my feeble heart stuttering under the weight of this news.

“Sit down, baby,” he whispers and I gladly sit as he pulls the box out of the slot again. “Are you ready?”

I nod and he carefully sets the box in my lap. The first thing I see is the picture sitting on top of the stack. It’s clearly a professional family photo. Chris Knight, his wife, and their three kids are standing in front of a large elm tree. They look so happy and… perfect. I’ll bet all the TVs in their house work perfectly.

Caleb kneels in front of me and reaches forward to wipe a tear from my cheek. “Are you okay?”

I shake my head, shaking loose another tear. “No.”

I lift the photos out of the box and move the top picture to the bottom of the stack. The next one stops me cold. It’s a picture of Chris Knight looking quite a bit younger. He’s dressed in a suit and holding… me.

Don’t say it unless you mean it…

It’s a simple concept, one I’ve said time and again, but something people don’t seem to comprehend. You should choose every syllable carefully, because you never know when somebody will hold you to your word.

Somebody like me.

I’m not a good man. I’m not. I know. I have enough darkness inside of me to rid the world of every stitch of light. But there’s one I could never harm, one light I couldn’t bring myself to snuff out.

Karissa.

She thinks I’m a monster, and maybe I am. I taunt her with my touch, get a thrill out of torturing her soul. But I’m not the only one. The world is full of monsters, and I’m not the most dangerous one out there.

Not even close…

God help me, I love her.

I do.

And God help anyone who tries to take her from me.

I’ve said it before.
I’ll say it again.
I’m not a good man.
I never will be.

Oh my god, OH MY GOD!!!!!

I freaking LOOOOVED Torture to Her Soul! I mean, I already loved Monster in His Eyes, but Torture in Her Soul was PHENOMENAL! It blew. me. away. I loved every single part of this book, most especially Naz! GAH, the feels this book gave me. I never wanted it to end!

I remember after finishing Monster in His Eyes that I was so, so, so excited for more of Naz and Karissa’s story. I NEEDED to know how it would continue, how it would end! Well, the wait is over now! I’m SO happy that the conclusion to Naz and Karissa’s story is finally here. Theirs is a story you DO NOT want to miss. It’s dark, romantic, delicious, and spectacularly written–you will be sucked into the story, the characters, and the writing… basically everything!

So I guess the first thing I should tell you is that Torture in Her Soul is told in Naz’s POV. Which was pretty much the best surprise for me! And I have to say I abso-freaking-lutely  L O V E D  Naz’s POV. It was so amazing (and a little crazy) being in Naz’s head and knowing his thoughts. He truly is an unforgiving, dark, and dangerous man… but I love him.

I do what I want, take what I want, and make no apologies for any of it. After all, I wasn’t born this way. The world made me who I am, and the world pays for that mistake every day.

It’s actually because of his POV that I fell completely in love with Naz. I was intrigued by him in Monster in the Dark but I never actually LOVED him. His character was fascinating, without a doubt, but I still had my reservations about him. But all of those reservations were wiped away in Torture to Her Soul. I came to understand him, understand his reasons and motives for everything he does. And I unexpectedly fell so hard and fast for him in Torture to Her Soul. But this wasn’t only because I understood him; the main reason I fell in love with Naz is because I could feel his love for Karissa. I could feel that his love for her is unquestionable, that it is the very foundation of his soul. Karissa is the one person he would never intentionally hurt, the one person he would give his life up for.

And maybe there is a monster inside of me.
Scratch that, I know there is.
I feel it rear its ugly head sometimes. I feel it eating away at my body, poisoning my thoughts when the darkness takes over. My insides are black but my heart still beats.
It still beats.
And it fucking beats for her.
So there is a monster inside of me, yes, but it doesn’t make up all of me.
Besides, isn’t there a monster in everybody?

Torture to Her Soul begins with Karissa and Naz at a stalemate. They don’t trust each other, and yet they don’t leave each other, because they still love each other fiercely. Earning back each other’s trust is a huge challenge for them, and as they struggle with their relationship, they also have to deal with people who are dead-set against them even having relationship.

I was a bit frustrated with Karissa, but I understood her, so I could forgive her for being so stubborn against Naz. Her whole world was turned upside down and it was Naz’s fault, so I was sympathetic towards her. Naz was beautifully patient towards Karissa–even though he gets frustrated with her, everything he does is still out of love for her. He’s not a good man, but there isn’t a man alive who’ll love Karissa like he does.

“I’m not a good man,” he says, “but I’m trying. I’m trying. I can’t make you any promises of perfection. I can’t promise I’ll be what you deserve, or what you need, or even what you always want. All I can promise is that I’ll love you until the day I die, and I’ll spend every moment I’m alive trying for you.”

Oh gawd! My heart–Naz completely stole it with his sweet words.

There’s also nonstop suspense and action in this book! Every single moment, Naz and Karissa need to watch their backs. I was flipping through this book so fast, but I never wanted it to end! My heart was pounding throughout this book–I just wanted these two to finally get the HEA they deserved.

Torture to Her Soul is a heart-stopping follow-up to Naz and Karissa’s story. I loved every single page and I LOVED Naz. For those of you who’ve read Monster in His Eyes, get to reading Torture to Her Soul asap! And if you haven’t started Karissa and Naz’s story, I highly recommend doing so. Their story is dark, but it’s also deeply romantic and unforgettable.

She’s oxygen, and without her, I’m dead.

Early Review: Rock Courtship by Nalini Singh

Rock Courtship by Nalini Singh

Rock Courtship by Nalini Singh
Series: Rock Kiss #1.5 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: September 30th 2014
Links: Ebook • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher (TKA Distribution) in exchange for an honest review

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s new contemporary romance novella is pure hard rock and scorching heat…

What happens when the Gentleman of Rock decides to play dirty?

A drummer for the hottest rock band on the planet, David has a single, powerful weakness: Thea, the band’s publicist and the woman who steals his breath away with her every move.

Only problem is, Thea doesn’t date clients—or musicians. Emotionally scarred by a cheating ex, she’s not about to risk her heart with a man who has groupies buzzing around him like flies. Even if his sexy smile ties her up in knots.

What she doesn’t know is that David is a one-woman man…and he’s madly in love with her. David’s determined to prove he’s worth the risk, and willing to court her, step by exquisite step. Thea’s about to discover just how long and hard this handsome drummer can play.

I adored the first book in Nalini Singh’s Rock Kiss series (my review of Rock Addiction), so I was so excited to read Rock Courtship! And oh my gosh, I’m so happy with Thea and David’s story!! I kind of wish it were a full-length novel so I could get more of them, but their novella is pretty much sweet, sexy, and perfect.

If you’ve read Rock Addiction (if you haven’t, you definitely should!) then you know that David, the drummer of Schoolboy Choir, has always had a thing for Thea, the band’s publicist. Well, it’s more than just a thing – he’s totally and completely in love with her. I was rooting for him to win over Thea in Rock Addiction, and we finally get to have their story told in Rock Courtship. Their story was actually so much more than I thought it would be – it was heartfelt, romantic, funny, sweet, and definitely sexy. I had so much fun reading this book!

Thea is a very take-charge kind of woman – she’s confident, bold, headstrong, but she doesn’t have a good history of dating men who accept her for who she is, so she doesn’t trust men. David, though, knows exactly who Thea is, and loves her all the more for it. But… Thea has a strict policy of not dating clients. It doesn’t matter that there’s some hot chemistry between the two, Thea won’t date David. But David is persistent. He’s the kind of man who doesn’t bulldoze his way towards his woman – instead, he strategizes the best way to win her over, and in this case, it’s writing memos to Thea.

Reasons Why You Should Give Us a Shot
Introduction: In this memo, I, David Rivera, explain why you, Thea Arsana, should seriously consider entering into a relationship with me.

As a publicist, Thea is unable to help herself from reading memos, so it’s really the perfect plan for David to get Thea to listen to him. And I loved them all! David, the Gentleman of Rock, is honest, sweet, romantic, funny, and very very passionate in his memos to Thea. He definitely won over my heart as well as Thea’s this way. These memos made me smile, laugh, clutch my heart – they were just too cute!

Thea gives as good as she gets when she replies to David’s memos with some of her own, and the two of them go back and forth, playfully replying to each other. Thea tries to make David see that they won’t work, but with the memos (and then phone calls), Thea slowly opens her heart to him and begins to trust that maybe he won’t break her heart after all.

These two are just perfect together! David and Thea make the sweetest couple ever. And even though their lives aren’t exactly simple, and they don’t get to see each other 24/7, they still try their hardest to make a relationship between them work.

She was it for him. Today, tomorrow, every day to come.

Rock Courtship was just a sweet, sweet read. I adored David and Thea’s courtship (*wink*). It’s a quick, fun, light-hearted read that fans of the first book won’t want to miss. We also get to see the other members of the band and Molly, which I was really happy about. Now I’m just so excited for the other band members to get their stories!!

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wait for You and Be with Me comes a daring tale that pushes boundaries . . .

At 21, Calla hasn’t done a lot of things. She’s never been kissed, never seen the ocean, never gone to an amusement park. But growing up, she witnessed some things no child ever should.   She still carries the physical and emotional scars of living with a strung-out mother, Mona—secrets she keeps from everyone, including her close circle of college friends.

But the safe cocoon Calla has carefully built is shattered when she discovers her mom has stolen her college money and run up a huge credit card debt in her name. Now, Calla has to go back to the small town she thought she’d left behind and clean up her mom’s mess again. Of course, when she arrives at her mother’s bar, Mona is nowhere to be found. Instead, six feet of hotness named Jackson James is pouring drinks and keeping the place humming.

Sexy and intense, Jax is in Calla’s business from the moment they meet, giving her a job and helping her search for Mona. And the way he looks at her makes it clear he wants to get horizontal . . . and maybe something more. Before Calla can let him get close, though, she’s got to deal with the pain of the past—and some very bad guys out to mess her up if she doesn’t give them her mom.

review

JLA is one of those authors that you can trust–when I pick up a JLA book, I know that I won’t be disappointed, and her latest release, Stay with Me, is no exception. I am sooo in love with this series. Each book in the Wait for You series manages to be a captivating, sexy, fun read, and I highly enjoyed Calla and Jax’s story.

We first met Calla as Teresa’s college friend in Be with Me. We didn’t really know much about her, except for the scar she has running down her face, but it turns out there’s a LOT to this girl. First, she’s incredibly self-conscious about her scars–the one on her face and the ones on her body–so much so that she hasn’t really… well, done anything. She’s never been kissed, let alone had sex, never gotten drunk, never done anything fun during her 21 years. Her main focus has been getting through nursing school. Second, Calla has many secrets, secrets that shame her enough that she hides her past from her friends.

So when her drug addict of a mother steals all of Calla’s money that she needs to pay for school, Calla can’t keep hiding her secrets and ignoring/running away from her past anymore. The summer after her school year is over, Calla reluctantly packs up and moves back to her hometown, a place she never wanted to return to, to try to track down her mother to get her money back. But she never expected to get involved in dangerous schemes, and she definitely never expected Jax.

“… When I want something, I go for it. Life is way too damn short to live any other way. And I want to get to know you better.” Those lashes lowered one more time, his gaze tracking to my lips like they were some kind of mecca. “Yeah, I definitely want to get to know you better.”

Jax is the ex-marine bartender who works at the bar owned by Calla’s mother, and he is smokin’. He’s sexy, honest, blunt, and a very straightforward guy. And while I really, really liked Jax (and his naughty, naughty ways) I didn’t LOVE him like I wanted to. It took a while for me to warm up to him. Jax just seemed a bit too shallow at first, so I was reserved when he was first introduced, but over time, I gradually became fonder of him. He’s hot, but what I liked most about Jax was how sweet he is to Calla. He shows her just how beautiful she truly is, despite, and even because of, her scars.

“You like me.”
His lips twitched. “Not a new flash, honey. I like you, knowing that the scars are a part of you.”
“But how?” It wasn’t the first time I asked him this.
“I’ve already told you how.” Both hands were back on my waist again, and my breath caught. “I think it’s past time for me to just show you.”

I couldn’t really connect with Calla in the beginning, although like with Jax, I ended up enjoying her character as the book went on. I understood how her scars made her feel self-conscious and my heart went out to her, but I wanted her to stand up for herself more, to believe in herself more. But as Calla spends more time back in her hometown, working alongside Jax at the bar to make some money, she does gain more strength within herself. I really liked reading about her character growth–she learns not to hide her scars or hide away from those who care for her.

Calla and Jax together equals hotness!! I will say that Jax is definitely one of the hotter JLA boys, even though he’s not my favorite of her male characters. Jax gets to be Calla’s first for a lot of things, and I adored the two of them together. They do have bumps along the way, so it’s not an easy relationship between them. I liked that they had bumps, even though I wanted to strangle the two of them sometimes, because they two of them made a really great couple.

There’s also some action and suspense in Stay with Me, which I wasn’t expecting, or at least expecting that much of. Because of Calla’s drug addict mother, Calla and Jax are thrust into some dangerous stuff–some of which include threats, guns, drugs, drug dealers, the whole shebang. Some of the it was intense, some of it was predictable, but overall, I really enjoyed this suspenseful aspect of the book.

Stay with Me was another great addition to the Wait for You series. It definitely has a different feel than the other books, but it worked well with the story and characters. Calla and Jax’s story was so much fun to read–it’s not my favorite of the series, but I still really enjoyed it! It’s a fairly long book, but in between the hot chemistry between Jax and Calla, and the action and suspense, the pages flew by for me. Fans of the series won’t be disappointed with this next installment.
