Damon Atwood was Hollywood’s golden boy. Having won an Oscar at the tender age of thirteen, he had the life many could only dream about. But his success came at a price, and after a short but fruitful film career, he chose to live a life of obscurity on a remote Scottish island. Almost a decade later he’s finally ready to make his return, starting with a lead role in a musical on London’s West End.

As a choreographer’s assistant, Rose Taylor has always faded into the background. She watches shows come to life from the side lines, but has never craved the attention of stardom. When rumours begin circulating of Damon’s involvement in her latest gig, she doesn’t predict how she will be thrust into the limelight, nor how the mysterious and strangely introverted man will need her to teach him how to be a star again.

Rose knows that show crushes don’t last. Actors fall for each other during the intensity of a production, often losing themselves in their roles. These kinds of affairs burn bright and then they fade. The question is, should Rose let herself shine with Damon, or guard her heart from being broken after the final curtain call?

I freaking adore L.H. Cosway’s books!! She’s got such a unique, quirky style of writing that I’ve missed. Honestly, all of her stories are unique and all her characters are special. Showmance is definitely another winner from her – it’s a fantastic theater romance that was so sweet and easy to read. Damon and Rose totally melted my heart as I read their story. If you love romances that feature celebrities or the theater, I highly recommend Showmance!

Rose Taylor is a dancer and a choreographer assistant – but even though she dances incredibly well, she shies away from the spotlight because of her stage fright. So she’s content to stay backstage for the latest musical she’s in, Moulin Rouge, and she’s also made a promise to herself to stay away from actors after being badly burned by one in the last show she was in. But her promise goes awry when the famous former child star, Damon Atwood, returns to acting as one of the main characters in Moulin Rouge. He’s all grown up now – he’s sexy, quiet, irresistible, and to top it off, he has a gorgeous singing voice. How is a girl to stay away from him, especially when it seems he’s grown an interest in her?

“Enlightenment is often found in the most unexpected places,” she replied, lifting the cup to her mouth again with a teasing smile.
My eyes traced the curve of her lips and the feminine line of her jaw, and I thought, If I could find myself anywhere, it would be inside you, Rose Taylor.

Damon Atwood has been living the quiet, solitary life after he left Hollywood, so now that he’s thrust back into the limelight, he’s a little awkward and stilted about being back in urban life. The only time he feels calm and like himself is when he’s with Rose, a beautiful, sweet, adorable dancer he can’t stop thinking about. He and Rose form a friendship of sorts, even though it’s layered with attraction. But when other people start hounding in on them – Damon’s co-star wants him, Rose’s ex wants her back – will the two of them finally go after what they want?

This is probably the sexiest book I’ve read from L.H. Cosway so far. The chemistry between Rose and Damon is FABULOUS. I could seriously feel it every time they were together. L.H. Cosway did a wonderful job with the build-up of anticipation between these two characters – I was dying for Damon and Rose to get together! And when they finally did… swoon. Damon is one sweet talker (though he can be dirty too) ;).

One of my favorite things about Showmance is the fact that it’s in dual POV. I LOVED that we get inside both Rose and Damon’s heads! We can see how the attraction is on both sides and how they wanted each other so much. Their romance is seriously just all the swoons – I couldn’t get enough of them! Showmance is another fantastic read from one of my favorite authors – it’s got a wonderful cast of characters, a heart-warming romance, and the theater aspect is on point! I simply adored this book.

Home wasn’t a geographical location on the map anymore, it wasn’t a place set by four walls and a roof. Home now was a much more intangible, yet solid thing.
She was my home.
My beautiful, sweet, and forever enchanting Rose.

After a moment I leaned in, my shoulder brushing hers as I spoke low, “And what book would you have me narrate?”

She paused to consider her answer, tapping her lower lip with her middle finger. “Hmm, if only Elizabeth Gaskell had written North and South from the male point of view. You’d make a fantastic Mr Thornton.”

I effected a brooding frown. “That’s how you see me? All moody and tortured?”

She eyed me, seeming surprised that I knew who Mr Thornton was. “Maybe add shy to that list. You’ve barely spoken a word to me all week.”

I rubbed at my jaw and looked across the studio to where Iggy stood with Jacob, both men talking, their eyes on us. “Yeah, sorry about that.”

Seeming to notice my self-consciousness, she nudged me with her elbow. “Did you know you sound like Sean Bean? I could listen to him recite the phone book,” she said on a sigh. Did that mean she could listen to me recite the phone book, too? For a second her blue eyes widened, like she just realised what she’d said. I didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable, so I changed the subject.

“Do you remember earlier when I was singing my part of the song for the first time?”

Rose nodded and took another gulp of water. My attention wandered to the delicate curve of her throat as she swallowed and then back up to her bright eyes. My brow furrowed. It was becoming disconcerting how closely I watched her sometimes.

“Everybody got weird for a second, just…staring at me. What was that about?”

She turned her body to look me dead in the eye. “You have no idea, have you?

“No idea of what?”

“Of how good you are. When you sing, I swear, even the straight guys in the cast get stiffys.”

I sputtered a laugh, surprised by her unexpected bluntness. “You’re lying.”

“And you’re oblivious, Damon. You’re a fantastic actor and an amazing singer. It’s hard for people not to go all googly-eyed when you perform. I guess that’s why you’re a star.” She shrugged like it was simple.

“I haven’t been a star for a very long time, and even then it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be,” I said. What I really wanted to say was, do you get a stiffy when I sing? Or, uh, the female equivalent.

Do you get wet when I sing, Rose?

The question filled my head with images. In my mind she was spread wide and naked on my bed, begging, pleading… My gaze wandered from her curious expression to her exposed shoulder. Her oversized T-shirt was hanging off again, revealing a tight tank top beneath. The rise and fall of her breathing led my attention to her breasts, which were round and full, but frustratingly hidden beneath the bagginess of the top.

Early Review: Good Girl by Lauren Layne

Good Girl by Lauren Layne
Series: Love Unexpectedly #2 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: May 17th 2016
Links: EbookGoodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Lauren Layne brings all the unpredictable heat of her USA Today bestseller Blurred Lines to an all-new cast of characters! Country music’s favorite good girl is hiding away from the world—only to find herself bunking with a guy who makes her want to be a little bad.

Jenny Dawson moved to Nashville to write music, not get famous. But when her latest record goes double platinum, Jenny’s suddenly one of the town’s biggest stars—and the center of a tabloid scandal connecting her with a pop star she’s barely even met. With paparazzi tracking her every move, Jenny flees to a remote mansion in Louisiana to write her next album. The only hiccup is the unexpected presence of a brooding young caretaker named Noah, whose foul mouth and snap judgments lead to constant bickering—and serious heat.

Noah really should tell Jenny that he’s Preston Noah Maxwell Walcott, the owner of the estate where the feisty country singer has made her spoiled self at home. But the charade gives Noah a much-needed break from his own troubles, and before long, their verbal sparring is indistinguishable from foreplay. But as sizzling nights give way to quiet pillow talk, Noah begins to realize that Jenny’s almost as complicated as he is. To fit into each other’s lives, they’ll need the courage to face their problems together—before the outside world catches up to them.

Lauren Layne does it again! She delivers another fun-filled, hilarious, and sweet contemporary romance with Good Girl, a new adult standalone in the Love Unexpectedly series. I seem to never be disappointed with LL’s works, which makes her an auto-buy author for me whenever I’m in the mood for something light-hearted that will make me smile. So basically, I really, really enjoyed Good Girl – it’s the perfect opposites-attract/enemies-to-lovers romance! If you love broody heroes and sassy heroines, this book is definitely for you.

Jenny Dawson is a famous country singer who’s known for her ‘America’s sweetheart’ persona, but when false accusations appear in the media claiming that Jenny is involved in a cheating scandal, her life becomes a mess. She needs to get out of town ASAP, and the perfect place happens to be in the middle of nowhere, Louisiana. Her trip to the quiet, serene countryside would be perfect… if it weren’t the annoying, broody, sexy caretaker, Noah.

You know that feeling you get sometimes? Well, okay, rarely. That feeling when you meet a stranger’s eyes and something inexplicable and intense sizzles between you?
That.
That’s what happened between me and Noah Maxwell, at least on my end.
And then . . .
And then he had to go and open his mouth. It would figure that the first guy I’m attracted to in a good long time turns out to be a total jerk. It would also figure that I’m stuck sort of living with him for the next few months.

Noah… isn’t the caretaker of the place Jenny’s staying at, but she doesn’t need to know that he’s actually the owner. Noah himself wanted a quiet place to turn to while escaping from his preppy life as Preston Noah Maxwell Walcott, but everything’s disrupted when a gorgeous country singer and her annoying Pomeranian arrive at the estate. To say that Noah and Jenny don’t get along is an understatement – they get off on the wrong foot from the first second they meet, and it all goes downhill from there. But the delicious tension between builds as they trade insults and banter, and who can resist when the two are stuck together on an estate with no one around for miles?

This girl is like crack to me. Sweet, addicting, and fucking dangerous.

I read some earlier reviews and knew going into Good Girl that Noah wouldn’t exactly be the greatest hero ever. He’s a jerk, in fact. He does asshole things, says cruel words – but never did I think that the things he did go too far or should never be forgiven. Jenny, thankfully, isn’t a doormat, but neither is she petty, which I admired. Somehow, LL wrote these two characters in a way that just worked for me. The gradual build-up of their feelings and the romance felt genuine and I really connected with it. And by the end, any lingering anger or frustration I had towards Noah were gone, and I was giddy and smiling at how things wrapped up. This book might not be for everyone, but I really enjoyed LL’s take on an enemies-to-lovers theme.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

Writing The Ending I Want has been a cathartic and exhausting process for me, but I have loved every second of writing it. I relate to this story more than any of the stories that I’ve written before. Maybe that’s because there’s a piece of me in this book. And not in Taylor having a brain tumor, because fortunately I’ve never had to endure anything like that. But for me, it was the need to feel free from something that has crippled me for many years, just like Taylor is crippled by her own pain. Taylor wanted to die to be free. I never wanted to die, but I did want to be free, in a way that’s hard to explain. But now, after years of feeling trapped by my demons, things that have held me back in life, I’ve found a way to get the freedom I needed. I’m still a work in progress, but I’m working better now than I ever did before – just saying this cryptic stuff out loud is a big step for me. So, writing Taylor in the way I did was a big deal for me. I really hope that you love this story, and see strength in Taylor’s choices rather than weakness.

Ever since I read The Storm series, I’ve been a big fan of Samantha Towle’s. I get super excited for every one of her releases, so when I heard about The Ending I Want (and saw the gorgeous cover), I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it! While I didn’t completely love it, it’s certainly an emotional, if frustrating, read. While I can’t say there was anything particularly unique about the story or characters, if you’re a long-time fan of the author, you just might love this book!

Taylor Shaw knows she’s dying. She had a brain tumor once at sixteen, and she knows it’s back again at twenty-two. But rather than sit passively waiting to die, she’s made somewhat of a bucket list that she’s determined to complete before the end. On her flight to London, she encounters the gorgeous Liam Hunter, with whom she completes the first item on her list: kiss a stranger. Turns out the chemistry between them gets hotter than ever after that kiss, and even though she knows she shouldn’t, she allows Liam to sweep her away on a whirlwind romance and adventure… all the while keeping her terminal illness a secret from him.

I really wanted to love this book… but it only ended up an okay read. I liked some parts, but others frustrated me. I skimmed some of the steamy scenes because they were getting to be too much. The romance… well, I didn’t really FEEL the connection between Liam and Taylor. The lust is strong between them, but the love takes a little while to understand. Their whole trip takes less than two weeks, which meant it takes about a week for them to fall in love, which was a little too unbelievable to me. Still, I did enjoy the sweet, tender moments between them, and Liam is certainly an alpha hero. I liked that he was willing to do anything and everything for Taylor, and with his wealth, he certainly could. The Ending I Want might not be my favorite Samantha Towle read, but I’m still a big fan of hers and I look forward to more books from her!

Go to England. Kiss a stranger. Have lots of sex,” his deep voice rumbles out the words I wrote.

He glances at me over his shoulder, a shit-eating grin on his face.

I don’t even bother with trying to get the list back now. What’s the point? He’s already seen it.

Bastard.

I fall back into my seat, my face feeling like a blowtorch went at it. “You’re an asshole,” I mutter.

He turns to face me, my list in his hand but still held out of my reach. “Aw, don’t be like that, Taylor, from Boston. I was just curious to read it.”

I’m pretty sure he’s going for contrite, but he’s failing miserably.

I glare at him. I’m going for death-by-laser stare.

It doesn’t work because he gives me a panty-dropping smile. I’d like to say I’m unaffected, but I’m not; however, I don’t let him know that.

“Curious? I don’t think so. An effing thief? Yes.”

He laughs. “I’m sorry. But you don’t need to be embarrassed. It’s a good list.” He looks back to my list. “Have sex with a stranger,” he continues on reading. “Have sex with a stranger outdoors. You do know I can help you with all of these, right?” He lifts a brow at me.

I give him the middle finger.

He laughs again and looks back to the list. Then, he stops laughing and stares at me with what can only be described as complete horror. “You’ve never had oral sex?”

Fuck.

Why the hell did I put that on my list?

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes a riveting new story about friendship, survival, and finding your voice.

For some people, silence is a weapon. For Mallory “Mouse” Dodge, it’s a shield. Growing up, she learned that the best way to survive was to say nothing. And even though it’s been four years since her nightmare ended, she’s beginning to worry that the fear that holds her back will last a lifetime.

Now, after years of homeschooling with loving adoptive parents, Mallory must face a new milestone—spending her senior year at public high school. But of all the terrifying and exhilarating scenarios she’s imagined, there’s one she never dreamed of—that she’d run into Rider Stark, the friend and protector she hasn’t seen since childhood, on her very first day.

It doesn’t take long for Mallory to realize that the connection she shared with Rider never really faded. Yet the deeper their bond grows, the more it becomes apparent that she’s not the only one grappling with lingering scars from the past. And as she watches Rider’s life spiral out of control, Mallory must make a choice between staying silent and speaking out—for the people she loves, the life she wants, and the truths that need to be heard.

JLA is just one of those authors whose books you can’t help but enjoy. The Problem with Forever is the first of her contemporary YAs that I’ve read (I usually read her NA or fantasy books), but it was just as fantastic as I expected, if a little different from what I usually read from her. Besides the gorgeous cover, what really attracted me to this was the intriguing blurb – the fact that the main characters are long-lost friends who bonded over tragic circumstances. Mallory and Rider’s story turned out to be gripping and intense – from the very first page, I couldn’t put it down!

As a foster child, Mallory Dodge grew up in an abusive home, but the one person who was always there for her, who promised to protect her forever, was Rider Stark, a foster kid who grew up alongside her. While Mallory was able to get out and get adopted by good people, she never knew what happen to her dear friend – until now. The last person she expects to run into during her first day of her senior year of high school is her long-lost friend, who she’s never been able to forget. And it seems like he’s never been able to forget her either.

Mallory suffers from some pretty intense anxiety, including public speaking, due to PTSD from her childhood. As a defense mechanism, she’s quiet, awkward, and struggles to speak out. I could feel how much she hated this aspect of herself, but felt so helpless to change anything about it. Her growth and development is slow and gradual, though not without struggles, but it really felt so honest and real. JLA did a wonderful job with Mallory’s character, with making her relatable and genuine. She’s the kind of heroine I easily found myself cheering for.

Life was like doing this speech. It wasn’t necessarily about the end result, but more about trying.
I could… I could get behind that.

Rider is your typical cocky, bad boy senior… except he’s not. He’s actually so much more than that. He’s loyal, headstrong, and incredibly protective of Mallory – he always was since they were younger. He’s also so supportive of her, helping her try to overcome her public speaking issues. He once again becomes Mallory’s savior… but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t need saving himself. Much as Rider would like to think their traumatic past only affected Mallory, he’s so messed up inside from it that he doesn’t even realize it. My heart broke even more so for Rider than Mallory, because as Mallory grows and heals, Rider only comes to believe that he has no self worth.

Forever was something we all took for granted, but the problem with forever was that it really didn’t exist.

This book… it’s painful and heartbreaking to read, but the changes Mallory and Rider make are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The inner strength within these two is a powerful thing to witness, made all the more sweeter after the tragedy and struggles they’ve overcome. I also loved all the secondary characters and how important and influential they are in Mallory and Rider’s lives, from Mallory’s adoptive parents to her best friend, from their speech teacher to Rider’s adoptive brothers. They all have an impact on the story and the main characters, which made this book feel all the more real to me.

The Problem with Forever is a raw and powerful read, and it’s one everyone should give a try. If you love JLA, get ready for an intense, highly emotional read – it’s a fantastic YA contemp you won’t regret reading!

Release Day Review: Dare to Take by Carly Phillips

Dare to Take by Carly Phillips
Series: Dare to Love #6 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: May 3rd 2016
Links: EbookPaperbackGoodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review

A one night stand.
A secret.
A mistake they tried to forget.

On leave from the army, Tyler Dare is just looking for a little fun, but his best friend’s sister is off limits. Yet unable to deny how sexy and alluring she is, he finds it all too easy to succumb to a night of passion and heat that ends the next morning in the worst way possible.

There are just some guys you don’t touch–even someone as innocent and inexperienced as Ella Shaw knows that. But when her brother’s best friend is up for grabs and willing, she can’t resist. After all, she’s wanted him for years…

Now, Ella is stranded on a tropical island with a hurricane bearing down, and only Tyler can save her. It’s his chance to make amends for the past and show the woman he’s never forgotten that he’s coming after her . . . in more ways than one.

I’d previously never read a Carly Phillips book before Dare to Take, but I wanted to read this one because I’m a sucker for the best friend’s older brother trope! I actually zipped through this book so fast – it’s a fun, quick-paced second chance romance that I’d definitely recommend for lovers of the trope!

Ella’s had a crush on her best friend’s brother, Tyler, for ages – but the one night they were together? He shot out of town without even saying goodbye. So to say Ella’s resentful is an understatement, which is why she doesn’t want to be stranded on a tropical island with the man who broke her heart. But the chemistry that existed all those years ago seems to never have died – can Ella resist Tyler when it seems like he’s trying to make amends… and maybe try a relationship again?

Former soldier Tyler Dare has never been able to forget the Ella and their night together, and the guilt he holds only builds as the years go by and he never apologizes. But now that he has the chance, he’s taking it – and taking Ella. Tyler may have a habit of running when things get tough, but he’s now realizing what a good thing he’d have with Ella. Plus, his protective instincts roar to life when they find out that someone’s out to steal something from Ella by any means necessary.

She was everything he’d never known he wanted or needed in his life.

Dare to Take can be read entirely as a standalone, which I was thankful for. After reading this, I’m intrigued now about the other Dare siblings, and I just might read the other books in the series. Carly Phillips wrote a seriously fun and sweet contemporary romance – it’s fairly predictable, but that didn’t lessen my enjoyment. This is the perfect read to get your mind off of things and spend a few hours with a lovely romance.
