The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team proves that love is a power play. As Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling series continues, the league’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Second chance romances are favorite kinds of romances to read, so when I heard Sawyer Bennett was going to have one in her Cold Fury Hockey series, I couldn’t wait! I adore this series – sexy hockey players get me every time. Hawke is the fifth book in the series, though it can be read as a standalone. Though this isn’t my favorite of the series, it’s still got that sweetness and sexiness that Sawyer Bennett excels at writing. If you enjoyed the previous books in the series, you’re sure to enjoy Hawke too.

I’m not prepared to see her at all because I’m not sure I can behave myself around her. I want her and yet I don’t want to want her.
And I mean I want her viciously.

Seven years ago, Hawke and Vale were twenty, volatile, and head over heels in love with each other. But when Vale breaks up with Hawke out of the blue right before he’s set to leave to play professional hockey, he’s understandably devastated and confused. The both of them move on and never once look back, until their lives collide again, now that Hawke is part of the Cold Fury team and Vale is working for the team as the assistant athletic trainer.

I wonder, had this one horrific event not occurred, would we have grown together over the years, or apart?
I’d like to think together, because despite the fact we were young and probably clueless as to what real commitment was like, there was something we had that I’ve never found again, and I’m pretty sure Vale hasn’t either.
And that was a tethering of our souls.

Hawke is… predictable. A fun predictable, but still, there just wasn’t anything about this story that popped out to me. I didn’t connect all that well with Vale or Hawke so I didn’t love this like I hoped to. I hate when miscommunication is the reason for a breakup, so I was a little disappointed that that was the reason for this couple’s fallout. Plus, I didn’t like that Hawke kept blaming everything that went wrong with their relationship on Vale. Yes, she has most of the blame, but he has some part in it too for not fighting for her. He got on my nerves more than a few times, honestly. But while I wasn’t a fan of Hawke’s character, I absolutely adored Vale. She’s so much more mature now than she was at twenty and she’s been working to the bone to help with her father’s sickness. It sucks when you like one main character over another, but sadly this was the case for me, so it was hard to fully love the story because of this.

This is definitely my least favorite of the series, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it at all, because there were still some fun, entertaining parts to this. Hawke is frustrating at times, but also sweet at others. And since it’s Sawyer Bennett, it’s also sexy as hell. I’m definitely looking forward to Max’s story now, and I hope it won’t be the last of the series!

Review: The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata

The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata

The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata
Series: Standalone
Publication Date: February 29th 2016

Vanessa Mazur knows she’s doing the right thing. She shouldn’t feel bad for quitting. Being an assistant/housekeeper/fairy godmother to the top defensive end in the National Football Organization was always supposed to be temporary. She has plans and none of them include washing extra-large underwear longer than necessary.

But when Aiden Graves shows up at her door wanting her to come back, she’s beyond shocked.

For two years, the man known as The Wall of Winnipeg couldn’t find it in him to tell her good morning or congratulate her on her birthday. Now? He’s asking for the unthinkable.

What do you say to the man who is used to getting everything he wants?

God, god, god!!!! Mariana Zapata has blown me away AGAIN – I absolutely LOVED The Wall of Winnipeg and Me!! Vanessa and Aiden have stolen my heart and I honestly never want it back. This is another book full of perfection from my new favorite author!

If you know me, then you’ll know that Kulti was my #1 favorite book of 2015 (check out my review here). I’ve become a fan of Mariana’s for life because of that book, and now that I’ve read Winnie, I know for sure that she’ll forever be an auto-buy author for me. Winnie had huge expectations to fill, obviously, and this brilliant author didn’t disappoint. If you loved Kulti, or if you love friends-to-lovers or slow burn, then you will adore Winnie. It’s a sports romance like Kulti, but it’s unique and special in its own way. From the second I picked this book up, I couldn’t put it down. And I never wanted it to end!

Vanessa Mazur has been working to the bone for a top football player, Canadian Aiden Graves, for the past two years as his assistant/cook/housekeeper/everything, and she’s about done. She’s ready to move on with her life and start her own career. Plus, she shouldn’t feel bad about quitting when Aiden doesn’t even care about her… right? He never says hello to her, never thanks her, never says anything – so why should she put up with him any longer?

While I’d always known and accepted that we weren’t friends, I guess a small part of me had been foolish enough to think I meant just a little, tiny, microscopic something to him. I’d done a lot for Aiden over the course of the time we’d worked together. I knew I would more than likely miss the familiarity of working for him at least a little bit. Wouldn’t he feel the same way?
That answer to that had been a big, fat nope.

It’s the shock of a lifetime when Aiden drops by Vanessa’s house a few weeks after she quits and asks her to come back to work for him. And even more, he proposes a deal she can’t pass up if she wants to move forward with her career: he’ll pay off her massive student loans in return for her hand in marriage, so that when his work visa expires, he won’t have to go back to Canada. But if they have to spend 5 years together, how will they possibly get along and pretend to be married when they never even really had a relationship to begin with?

“I wished you had respected me enough to appreciate me back when it would have meant something. I liked you. I admired you, and in the course of a few days, you killed that.”

I adored Vanessa. She’s a headstrong, hilarious, independent woman. She’s pretty much the only person who doesn’t take Aiden’s shit, and I completely admired her for it. She’s the wonderful kind of heroine I can relate to, and has quirks that made her feel REAL to me. She’s just… genuine! And so, so funny. The way she thinks and talks had me cracking up so much, and she has some wonderful banter with her best friend Zac, who I also adore, and surprisingly, her new husband Aiden.

He couldn’t be considered my sugar daddy if we were legally married, right?

Aiden isn’t your typical sports romance hero. He’s not a manwhore. He’s not popular or social with people. He keeps to himself and dedicates 100% of his life to football. He doesn’t form relationships with anyone and he’s a bit of an ass. But after Vanessa quits, he’s got a case of ‘you don’t know what you have until it’s gone.’ So he tries for her, tries to be a friend. This is a slow burn romance, so don’t expect anything to happen quickly. It’s the build-up of friendship, tension, small touches and glances that Mariana Zapata is so skilled at writing that makes the romance all the more unforgettable.

Winnie is slow burn at its finest. I loved every part of this book, even the parts where Aiden is a total butthead. He more than makes it up though, with the development of his and Vanessa’s relationship, and I fell head over heels in love with him. Football has always been his greatest love, but you can see that slowly changing through the book, and how can you not love that!?

Like football and art, like anything that anyone in the world has ever wanted, love was a dream. And just like a dream, there were no assurances behind it. It didn’t grow on its own. It didn’t blossom without food to feed it.
It was the greatest in its subtleties.
It was the strongest in its selflessness.
And it could be forever with someone who wasn’t afraid to never give up on the possibilities it presents.

This book for sure is going on my favorites shelf – I loved it like CRAZY. Winnie is slow, sweet, funny, perfect… it’s a heart-felt romance with unique characters I couldn’t get enough of. If you love romances that feel real, you need to read this book! It’s slow, but I promise the end is more than worth the wait. (While you’re at it, read Kulti if you haven’t already!!!)

Release Day Review + Giveaway: Beautiful Boss by Christina Lauren

Beautiful Boss by Christina Lauren

Beautiful Boss by Christina Lauren
Series: Beautiful Bastard #4.5 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: February 29th 2016
Links: Ebook • Paperback • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

The ninth work in the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling series that started with Beautiful Bastard. In this e-novella, Will Sumner and Hanna Bergstrom (from Beautiful Player) find that a wedding and everlasting love were just the beginning.

One Player tamed. One nerd girl satisfied. And one more major life decision to make. When Will fell for Hanna, her quirky sense of humor and fierce dedication to her career were part of the attraction. (Not to mention her coy newbie attitude toward sex and her willingness to let him teach her everything.) But when the job offers start rolling in for her—and oh, they do—Hanna has trouble deciding what she wants, where they should live, and how much she should burden Will with the decision. Magic between the sheets is only one part of a relationship…getting on the same page is quite another altogether.

Y’all. Christina Lauren is the BOMB. Beautiful Boss was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, because I love anything and everything that has to do with Will Sumner, and CLo did NOT disappoint. Beautiful Player is one of my favorite books, if not THE favorite book, by this author duo, so to say I was happy there would be a novella sequel would be an understatement. Beautiful Boss was pretty much a delight to read – revisiting Will and Hanna and the rest of the BB gang just made me so incredibly happy. If you love Christina Lauren’s books and Beautiful Player, then you absolutely need to get your hands on this latest novella installment.

“There is no way to mess this up,” I said, right against her mouth. “Even if we didn’t get married tomorrow, you’re the love of my life. I’m with you until we both die, at the same time, when I am one hundred and you are ninety-three.”

Beautiful Boss centers around Will and Hanna’s upcoming wedding and the new chapter of their lives as husband and wife they’re about the start. Hanna has been visiting different schools around the country to get a feel for what job offer to accept, but she’s yet to make a decision. Will is supportive of her but is getting frustrated with the distance between them every time she leaves to visit a school. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but trust me, this novella is just incredible. It’s sexy as hell, romantic, charming, and so, so funny. Hanna and Will are the biggest science nerds ever, and I love them even more after reading Beautiful Boss.

Christina Lauren fans won’t be disappointed with this novella. It’s got their wonderful writing, two lovable, kickass characters, aaand even a little man-on-man kiss that will have you in stitches. And oh my god, Will is as swoon-worthy as ever! He will forever reign as one of my favorite book boyfriends EVER. If you haven’t read Beautiful Player yet (or even the series), I highly recommend it if you love brilliantly written contemporary romances. Then you can get on reading Beautiful Boss and experience the wonder that is Will and Hanna’s married life.

Audiobook Review: Sebring by Kristen Ashley

Sebring by Kristen Ashley

Sebring by Kristen Ashley
Series: Unfinished Hero #5 (full reading order below)
Audiobook Publication Date: February 16th 2016
Length: 12 hours and 10 minutes
Narrated by: Stella Bloom
Links: Audible • Ebook • Paperback • Goodreads
Source: I received an audiobook in exchange for an honest review

Nick Sebring has issues. Born feeling like an outsider in his own family, growing up under the shadow of a brother who could do anything, Nick isn’t that great of a guy. But when this culminates with Nick lashing out to hurt his brother through the woman he loves, Nick turns inward and makes some decisions about the man he intends to be.

And as he does this, he falls in love and truly learns the man that he’s grown to be.

When his love is murdered right before Nick’s eyes, Nick knows he has to avenge her. He knows how he’s going to avenge her. And he has no qualms using Olivia Shade to exact that vengeance.

Olivia Shade has grown up on the outside of her family too. Her problem is that they don’t want her outside. They want her all the way in, right under their thumbs. She pays the price for seeking escape and learns her lesson—she’ll never see a dawn where she wakes up free.

Then she meets Nick Sebring, and even as she fights it, the hope that died years ago starts to blossom. She can find love. She can have a man of her own. She can be happy. She can be free.

Olivia hopes while Nick schemes.

However, as Nick peels back the layers of all that is Olivia Shade, he finds something surprising. He understands its fragility. He falls in love with its beauty. He seeks to protect it.

But he forgets to protect his Livvie from one thing: Nick Sebring.

I freaking LOVE Kristen Ashley’s audiobooks! They’re always super long and always worth the credit. Sebring is another winner from KA – the narration is fantastic, the story and characters are addicting, and best of all, KA made me fall in love with a character I always thought I’d hate. If you’re looking for the next audiobook to use your credit on, you definitely need to get Sebring!

Sebring is the final Unfinished Hero novel, featuring Nick Sebring, and though I’ve only read the first two books in the series, I had no problems going into this audiobook as a standalone. I would recommend, though, that you at least read the first book (or listen – the Knight audiobook is AMAZING as well), though it’s not entirely necessary. Nick is Knight’s brother and is first introduced in that book, but again, you don’t need to read Knight before getting into Sebring.

It’s been four years since Nick’s woman was murdered right in front of his eyes, and he’s on a plan of vengeance for his lost love. The Nick we know now is completely different than the one we knew back in Knight – he’s matured, taken responsibility for his actions, and become a MAN. He’s not exactly a good guy, but he’s much better than he was before. But his quest for vengeance is what fuels him now, and his target is Olivia Shade, the daughter of the man who ordered Nick’s woman to be killed. He plans to use her to get his revenge, but what happens when he starts to fall for his mark?

Olivia is an ice queen – she has to hide all her emotions to live the life she has as the daughter of a notorious criminal. She’s not the most likable heroine, but she’s understandable, and as I got to know her, I loved her character more and more. This woman has lived a hard life – her father physically burned her, the man she loved left her and married someone else – but she’s a survivor. And she doesn’t want anyone to get involved in her life at the risk of losing them to her father’s wrath. But the moment she meets Nick Sebring, a fiery-hot chemistry explodes between the two of them, and Olivia starts to believe that she can have a life she’s always imagined having.

I believed.
For one magnificent second, connected to Nick Sebring, I believed.
I believed in a better world.
I believed I could feel complete.
I believed I could have someone by my side.
I believed I could feel safe.
I believed I could be happy.
I believed I could be loved.
I believed in a dawn coming where I would open my eyes and have all of this only for it to lead to another day dawning where I’d have it and then another day…
And another…
And another…
And another…

What begins as a seduction and emotionless sex (which, between Olivia and Nick, is seriously hot) slowly turns into something more and something meaningful. Nick and Olivia open up to one another and start to care… but when Olivia doesn’t know that their growing relationship is built on lies, can they last? Or will these two be forever destined to life a life devoid of love and happiness?

“I live in dark. Dawn never comes for me. There will be no new day where I wake up complete. Happy. Loved. There is no other side to make my way to. There is no believe. It just isn’t for me.”

I loved Sebring. This story gutted me and healed me. I honestly couldn’t stop listening to this audiobook – Stella Bloom’s narration is so on point. Her voice is easy to listen to and she did a wonderful job of distinguishing the dialogues between different characters. The romance itself is captivating and heart-wrenching and beautiful – I fell in love with Olivia and Nick and rooted so hard for them to work. Sebring made me realize just how much I love KA’s books and missed reading them. All in all, Sebring is another brilliant story from KA and the narration made it all the more special. I seriously need to catch up on the series!

“I love you, Olivia. And I can make you safe. I can make you happy. I want a lifetime of nothing but that.”

Online, any fantasy is possible. But when virtual lovers decide to meet in real life, the temperature rises-and so do the stakes.

Safety. Anonymity. Invisibility. Those are just a few advantages of Internet “dating.” Even better, as far as Hannah Miller is concerned, is the fact that she can shed all inhibitions without worrying about what he thinks of her figure or her face. “He” is bikerboy357, the man who knows what Hannah likes, and wants her-every night-as much as she wants him. When he asks to meet, Hannah hesitates. But the temptation is too strong. And after one look into his sultry green eyes, there’s no turning back.

Cade MacKenzie’s never met a woman who wasn’t blinded by his billion-dollar net worth, but “JustAGurl456” knows neither his face nor his name. Her words are so smart, sweet, and scorchingly sexy that Cade’s willing to gamble she’ll be just as amazing in person. And she is. But even as every delicious encounter makes Cade want Hannah more, what he wants most is her trust. It’s something all his money can’t buy. And now, Cade will do anything to earn it . . .

I’m a sucker for the occasional billionaire book, so when I read the blurb for Bidding on the Billionaire, I had to read it! Plus, the premise about online lovers sounded amazing, so I was totally on board for this book. Overall, this was pretty much a quick, fun, sexy read, and though I didn’t particularly LOVE it, it’s a good read to pass the time.

Hannah Miller and Cade MacKenzie have been anonymous online lovers for a few months now, and more and more each day they become deeply involved with each other, even though they still haven’t revealed their real names. Hannah is a shy bookstore owner and Cade is a workaholic billionaire. They couldn’t be more different, but one phone call leads to an in-person meeting, and the chemistry between them in real life is just as hot as it is online. So they decide to let themselves indulge in one another for two weeks only – but what happens when they start to fall for each other and they’re both too scarred from their pasts to commit to a relationship?

I had a lot of fun with this book. I didn’t connect with Hannah or Cade, but I enjoyed their characters nonetheless. They’re both good people, but the exes in their lives have left them too emotionally hurt to ever want to put their hearts on the line again. I liked the way these two fell for one another, albeit quickly, and how they soothed each others’ hurts and started to believe in love again. I’d definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for something quick and easy with a hot billionaire hero. 😉
