Bully and victim.
Tormenter and tormented.
Villain and hero.

Ellie McCallum was the bully. The Tormenter. The Villain. Taking what she wanted, stomping over anyone that got in her way. Feelings, futures, and relationships be damned. She felt no emotional connection to anyone or anything. A sad and lonely existence for a young woman who had come to expect nothing more for herself. Her only happiness coming from making others miserable.

Particularly Freaky Flynn.

Growing up, Flynn Hendrick was known only as “Freaky Flynn.” He lived a life completely disconnected even as he struggled to become something more than that boy with Asperger’s. He was taunted and teased, bearing the brunt of systematic and calculated cruelty, ultimately culminating in a catastrophic turn of events that brought Ellie and Flynn’s worlds crashing down.

But then Flynn and Ellie grew up.

And moved on.

Until years later when their paths unexpectedly cross again and the bully and the freak are face to face once more.

When labels come to define you, finding yourself feels impossible. Particularly for two people disconnected from the world who inexplicably find a connection in each other.

And out of the wreckage of their tragic beginnings, an unlikely love story unfolds.

But a painful past doesn’t always want to let go. And old wounds are never truly healed…and sometimes the farther you try to run from yourself the closer you come to who you really are.

review

Wow! This is my first time reading a book by A. Meredith Walters, and I am so, so impressed. I loved the writing, and although the hero and heroine were difficult to connect with, I loved their story, and I loved the depth of their characters. Reclaiming the Sand is a beautiful, heart-wrenching story about a girl who’s full of hate and anger finds love and forgiveness with the boy she leasts expects.

I am an ugly person.
I do ugly things.
I think ugly thoughts.
You will hate me.

But you will love him.
It’s hard not to.
He is everything that I’m not.
He is good. He is kind. He cares for others deeply and absolutely.

You will hate me.
You will love him.
I love him.
He has changed my world.

Ellie is, plain and simple, a shitty person. She’s a bully, she’s belligerent, and she’s been to jail. She was dealt a crappy hand in life, and she continues to make bad choices, but I never hated her. I got frustrated and angry with Ellie, but I never hated her for who she was. I was sympathetic–Ellie never once tried to make something of herself. She was resigned to having the same, crappy life, with the same, crappy job, and the same, crappy friends. But all that changes when she starts seeing Flynn Hendrick around town again, a boy she never thought she’d have to see again.

You see… Ellie bullied Flynn back in high school. She and her group of “friends” (who were all just really terrible kids) would make fun of “Freaky” Flynn, mess with him, hurt him, and make him cry. He was different than most kids, because he has Asperger’s syndrome. It’s a delicate subject that the author handled superbly–Flynn’s sad experience in high school is heartbreakingly real. And it’s even more heartbreaking to see that when Ellie wasn’t with her friends, she was kind with Flynn. When they were alone, Ellie cared about Flynn, but in public, she never did anything to defend him.

The book is told in both Ellie and Flynn’s POVs, but where Ellie tells the story of the present, Flynn tells the story of their past. And past and present collide when Ellie and Flynn see each other after six years, after Ellie was sent to jail. I became so sucked into Ellie and Flynn’s story, nevermind that I wasn’t a huge fan of Ellie’s. She’s real and harsh, with no regards for anyone, except for Flynn. Flynn is always her exception, and as they end up spending more time together, he breaks down the ice around her heart.

“I like being with you. I missed you,” Flynn said, surprising me. Of all the things for him to say, I had not expected that. It was such an innocent thing but it held so much weight.
He missed me.
After everything I had done to him.
He missed me.

It’s beautiful seeing two people who could not be more mismatched for each other fall in love. But it’s incredibly difficult for Ellie to fall in love with a man who has Asperger’s. It’s frustrating and heartbreaking for Ellie sometimes when things don’t go exactly how Flynn needs, but he’s the type of man who’s worth all the trouble. He’s pure, innocent, kind, and the quiet kind of supportive who Ellie knows will stand by her no matter what.

Flynn represents everything bad the Ellie ever did, and she has to come to terms with her past. And she does. Through her actions, she manages to change herself for the better. I loved reading Ellie’s progression, how she finds strength within herself to change and to deal with the past.

Reclaiming the Sand is a beautifully written story that should not be missed. It’s painstakingly real, but so worth the read.

excerpt

“Flynn!” Dania called out, waving her arm over her head, trying to get his attention.  I didn’t want to look, but I couldn’t help it.

Flynn glanced our way and caught sight of Dania flinging her hand about.

He ignored her and I had to chuckle at my friend’s agitation.

“He is so rude!” she complained.

Before I could stop her, Dania was up and out of the booth, heading toward Flynn.  I got to my feet and hurried behind her.  The last thing I wanted was for her to cause a scene.  She had a short fuse these days and Flynn and his perceived disrespect would definitely trigger it.

“Freaky!  It’s so good to see you again!  Isn’t it, Ells?” Dania said, winking at me and biting her bottom lip so she wouldn’t laugh.

I felt like I had jumped into a time machine and transported back seven years.  Dania hadn’t matured much in the years since graduation.  In fact, since her pregnancy, I felt as though she had backtracked to near infancy.

She was playing schoolyard mind games and I didn’t want anything to do with it.

“Come on Dania, Emily’s going to be bringing us our food soon,” I used my best no nonsense tone in hopes she would listen.

“I just wanted to talk to Freaky Flynn.  We used to be buddies right?” Dania slung her arm around Flynn’s waist and he stiffened instantly.

“Don’t touch me,” he demanded, moving out of her hold.

“Come on.  I just want a friendly hug.”  Dania reached for him again and he threw his arms out to stop her, knocking over a napkin dispenser, sending it crashing to the floor.

The diner became deathly quiet.  Everyone was watching their exchange with vivid interest.

“Dania, enough!” I said, gritting my teeth.  Flynn’s normally placid face looked almost panicked.  He hated being touched.  Everyone that had ever interacted with him knew that.  And Dania most definitely knew that.  What was she trying to do?  This seemed so juvenile and beneath someone who was five months pregnant.

“Come sit with us, Flynn.  Let’s talk for a while,” she said, her voice smooth as honey.

Flynn shook his head and took a step backwards.

“You don’t like me.  I don’t like you.  I won’t sit with you,” he said firmly and I was sort of proud of him.  He was standing up for himself in a way he never had as a teenager.

Life had clearly taught him some harsh lessons.  And I was sure that Dania and I had been his teachers.

Dania frowned, taken aback by his blunt candor.  She looked at me and I shrugged.  Then she laughed, a high trilling sound.

“Well you don’t need to be a dick about it,” she huffed.  But I knew she wasn’t finished.  Dania didn’t take rejection well.  And she took public embarrassment even worse.

“Hold on, you have a piece of lint,” she said and reached up to swipe her hands across his face in a long, exaggerated gesture.  Flynn flipped out.  He lunged backwards so quickly he tripped over his feet and crashed into a table behind him.

There was a collective gasp but tried to help him.  Dania cackled in delight, covering her mouth with her hands, her eyes bright with malicious glee.  Flynn sat up, looking shaken.  His eyes were wide and I could see his hands trembling.

“Stop laughing at me!” he yelled, which only made Dania laugh louder.  His face was flushed red and tears dripped down his cheeks.

For a moment I stood there frozen.  Once upon a time I would have egged Dania on. Adding to his abject humiliation.

Not this time.

“You heard him, Dania, shut the fuck up.”  Without waiting to hear any more of her hate I leaned down on my haunches in front of Flynn.  I didn’t reach out a hand to help him up.  I didn’t invade his personal space.  I kept a healthy distance between us but I did meet his eyes.

And he didn’t look away.

My eyes flared. “Why on my stomach? A vital part of my anatomy isn’t useable unless you intend to teach me how to dry hump a mattress.” I tried to joke, to dispel some of the tense anxiety between us, but Zel’s lips only twitched. I’d mistaken any sense of relief when she secured the padlock—she hadn’t relaxed at all, shaking with tension.

“I want to do something.”

Fuck. She wanted to touch my back. She wanted to look deeper at the tattoos, see beneath the ink to the lash marks and countless other scars hidden beneath the Ghost designs. –ROAN

“What are your plans for the day, little one?” I asked, and she startled.

“I have a report I need to finish on the adverse effects of corporal punishment used on children.” I laughed and shook my head, my eyes going back to the television. “Yeah, so that will be fun. But if Connor and Grace aren’t back, I can always skip school tomorrow.”

“Not a chance.”

“I wasn’t asking.”

I looked over at her, her eyebrow raised in challenge.

“You had a private tutor.”

“I had antisocial tendencies and a habit of challenging authority.” I laughed as the credits rolled on the screen in front of us.

“I don’t doubt that.”

We fell silent as we both sat, unmoving. “So this guy…” I let my voice trail off.

“He’s just a guy.” She shrugged as she pulled on a loose thread on the blanket.

“Is he a good guy?”

“Are you?” she shot back.

“That’s a loaded question.” I stood up, stretching, and when I looked down at her, her smile fell. “What?”

“Did that hurt?”

I sighed as I thought of the marks that covered my back. “Don’t.” I walked over to the shelves of movies, scanning the titles. I didn’t know if it bothered me more that she was asking about them or that she looked upset over my injuries. I was no one for her to feel sorry for. While I’d received them for not doing what I was told, I’d earned them by following through with the orders. But answering that question perplexed me. If you take a child and never show him affection, any attention received is positive in his eyes. Coupling that with the twisted abusive behavior and dominance that was instilled in me so young, I learned to derive gratification from receiving pain as well as giving. It was a release, a way to atone for my sins.

She stood and walked up to my side. My scars should have been a warning to not get close to someone like me, but Annabel saw my dominant side as a reflection of my overprotective nature toward her. My eyes closed as her hand ran softly over my back. Her featherlight touch on my own wounds more painful than when I had received them.

“Annabel, stop,” I bit out, but she continued on, her fingers trailing over the raised welts. My body stiffened, not wanting someone to give me affection I didn’t deserve. It turned my stomach, and for once I was completely thrown off guard. So I did what I knew best, and I instilled fear in her.

“I said fucking stop,” I seethed as I grabbed her by her shoulders and slammed her small body against the movies, causing the shelves to shake. Her green eyes were wide with fright, and now I was the one desperate to touch. Her fear was palpable, and while I knew I was pushing away the one person who even remotely began to understand me, it was for her own good. She didn’t have to understand as long as she listened. But listening to me was something Annabel rarely did anymore. She’d become too comfortable in my presence, and now she ignored the alarms that would set a normal person on edge. That was what terrified me about her seeing this guy. I had no idea what kind of person he was, but I knew Annie wouldn’t be as cautious as she should be.

“Annabel…” I rested my forehead against the case, my body hovering over hers, caging her in with my arms on her shoulders. Her name came out like a plea for help.

“I-I’m sorry.”

I lifted my head and looked at her. The fear-induced stutter let me know I had succeeded in making her understand.

I took a step back from her, running my hand along my jaw before turning and leaving the room, desperate to put distance between us.

THE IMPACT

Tristan hit rock bottom, and no one felt the impact harder than Danika. She was forced to see, in the most brutal of ways, that love does not conquer all. Bruised, bloody, and broken she had to walk away.

THE AFTERMATH

Picking up the pieces of your life after a tragedy is a daunting prospect, and that’s considering you still own all of the pieces. But what if you don’t? What if someone else owns those pieces, and those pieces are a part of your soul?

You dig deep and work with what you’ve got.

That’s what Danika told herself and believed, every single day, for years.

Tristan and Danika’s love had failed every test that life had thrown at them. She couldn’t forget that, not for one second. And if those tests had been overly harsh, well, she wasn’t one to wallow in self-pity. The failure was the thing she had to focus on. The failure was the lesson. She had no intention of working so hard to make it out of hell without learning that lesson well.

THE REUNION

Over six years after the night that changed everything, Danika finds herself forced to spend the weekend constantly in Tristan’s company, as they attend the wedding of two of their dearest friends. It’s been long enough that she feels they can be friendly again without it destroying her peace of mind, but just a small amount of time in his presence has her remembering something she had forced herself to forget: There’d been a reason she’d gone through hell with this man, for this man, some true good to precede the bad.

She shocks herself by quickly giving in to a hunger that she never imagined could still consume her.

Even the best intentioned denial has a breaking point.

THE HARSH REALITY

After everything that’s happened, the rise and the fall, the pain and the aftermath, can these two navigate the waters of acute regret, survive the trials of coming face to face with all that they have lost, and find the strength to try again?

This book is intended for readers 18 and up.

SIX YEARS AFTER THE ACCIDENT

DANIKA

I was beyond flattered to be asked by Bianca to be a bridesmaid. I agreed instantly. I hugged her when she told me, and embarrassingly, even teared up.

Her friendship had been very good for me. We’d particularly bonded after the shooting. I’d visited her whenever I could as she was healing.

She managed in that quiet way of hers to talk me into posing for a series of paintings for her while she recovered.

I was terribly flattered, and excited, because she’d promised me a painting for my time.

She was extremely generous with her art, offering several times to give me pieces I was taken with in the past, but I’d always put her off, insisting on paying for the two small paintings that I did end up buying from her collection. This though, the exchange of inspiration for art, didn’t feel like taking advantage, and so I accepted her offer of taking my pick from her next collection, after we’d finished with the sessions.

One painting turned into another, until I became her favorite subject, second only to James.

The hours turned to days, hell, to weeks, and her next show, which premiered a mere of eight months after her first, had so many paintings of me in it that I couldn’t keep track. I became a bonafide part of the show. It was a strange experience, to say the least, but a good one.

We’d opened up to a each other as I’d sat and she’d painted, even talking to some extent about our rough childhoods. As far as nightmares went, I thought hers took the cake, but it was good to have a friend that could relate to having and surviving a troubled past. To climbing out of a pile of rubble and leaving it behind.

It was hard, but I made a promise to myself, for the sake of two people I adored who were getting the dream wedding they deserved, to just be nice to Tristan for the whole affair.

Not just civil. Not just less hostile. But nice.
I could do this, I told myself, many times.
And when push came to shove, it was frightening just how easy it was to fall back into the old rapport.
Not just easy. Natural.
I had this moment every time I went to visit Bev and Jerry at their house. I’d walk in the door, and everyone in the place would just stop what they were doing and rush at me. The kids, no matter how big they got, would wrap themselves around me. The dogs, sans Mango now, but with an extra puppy in the mix, would come and crowd me until I sat down somewhere, and let them all converge on me. Bev would come and kiss me on the forehead, even while Jerry did a drive by all the chaos to pat me on the head affectionately.

I was squeezed so tight that the air left my lungs, licked on every part of skin that wasn’t covered, and it usually lasted for several minutes. That many kids, and people, and dogs should not have existed comfortably into one space, but it didn’t just feel comfortable, it felt right. Like I was coming home.

Every single time.
 That’s how this felt.
Tristan and I were entering a new and unfamiliar chapter, only it didn’t feel that way. It felt like no time had passed at all.
It was terrifying. And comforting, because it hadn’t all just been some dream, there’d been a reason I’d gone through hell with this man, for this man, some true good to precede the bad. Over the years, I’d half-convinced myself that I’d imagined most of the good. It was just easier that way.

We were partnered up in the wedding party, which meant that we walked together, and, at all of the parties, we sat together.
I usually took care with my appearance, but I went to great lengths that weekend, spending extra time on my hair and makeup, and shopping for days to put my best foot forward.

I don’t care how things stand, every girl wants to feel beautiful when they see ‘that ex’ again. You know the one I’m talking about. The one you never quite got over. The one that had claimed enough of you that some of it had been lost in the parting.

I wore a gold lace sleeveless mod sheath to the rehearsal dinner, going heavy with gold shadow, and big hoop earrings. I wore my hair straight and parted down the middle. I kept it down, since I’d have a complicated up do the next day.

I was in dress to impress mode. I’d already seen Tristan several times since the festivities began, and each time I’d decked myself out with special care.

Vanity at its most perverse.

On the up side, we’d been getting along well, both of us cautious enough to go out of our way to give no offense.

“By the way, where’s that guy?” Tristan asked, sometime during the third course at dinner, his mouth making a mockery out of the words with just a hint of an unhappy smile.

His hair was longer. It looked good on him. Grippable. I gave myself a mental slap for even thinking it.

“Andrew,” I clarified, something in his voice troubling me, and unwillingly, intriguing me.

We’d kept things light thus far, and it had seemed to be working. This was a new turn, or the potential for one.

“You think I don’t remember his name? How likely do you think that is?”

“Where’s that girl?” I asked, immediately wanting to take it back. We did not need to do this to each other.

I looked down, up, shifted uncomfortably, but his eyes stayed glued to my face, his intense regard strong enough that it felt like a physical touch.

“What girl?” he finally asked.

I made a dismissive motion with my hand. I knew her name, but I already regretted even asking. “No one. It was a very silly question.”

“No, tell me. What girl?”

“That blonde one you’re always with. Your girlfriend.”

“That’s not my girlfriend. It’s weird to bring a girl that’s not your girlfriend to a wedding. Your turn. Where’s that guy?”
He had this perfectly even scruff on his jaw. It was distracting.
“Andrew couldn’t make it.” That was a lie. He’d wanted to come, but we were on a break, a very long break, due to the fact that he’d proposed several months ago, and I’d put him off again, and to say he’d been unhappy about it was a gross understatement. These days we were strictly friends, but Tristan did not need an update on my love life, or lack thereof.

“Oh, well that’s too bad.” His statement was so unconvincing that I had to make an effort not to laugh.

“Not an Andrew fan?”

He gave me a rueful smile, his brown eyes so endearing. I could tell he was about to say something funny. I just knew him that well. “That’s like asking if I’m a fan of cancer. I fucking hate it, but do I know how to get rid of it? Not fucking likely.”

That surprised one small giggle out of me. “Oh my God. Stop it. You’re impossible.”

His focus shifted to something behind me, and I turned to look. In an almost comical manner, everyone seemed to be staring in our direction, all gone quiet. No one was used to seeing us interact with each other like normal human beings.

“We should really blow their minds and start making out,” he whispered.

I laughed again, and had to check the urge to give his arm a playful punch. “You’re an ass. Shut up,” I told him.

His smile grew, and his eyes shone in pleasure, like I’d just given him a gift.
