Review: Maybe Not by Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover, the New York Times bestselling author of Maybe Someday, brilliantly brings to life the story of the wonderfully hilarious and charismatic Warren in a new novella, Maybe Not.

When Warren has the opportunity to live with a female roommate, he instantly agrees. It could be an exciting change.

Or maybe not.

Especially when that roommate is the cold and seemingly calculating Bridgette. Tensions run high and tempers flare as the two can hardly stand to be in the same room together. But Warren has a theory about Bridgette: anyone who can hate with that much passion should also have the capability to love with that much passion. And he wants to be the one to test this theory.

Will Bridgette find it in herself to warm her heart to Warren and finally learn to love?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Siiigh. I needed this book. For me, reading a book by Colleen Hoover is a bit… therapeutic, in a way. Her books take me out of any book funk I’m in and I always have the time of my life reading them, no matter how long or how short those books are. And the 129 pages of Maybe Not were pretty much absolute perfection. I haven’t laughed so hard because of a book as I have for Maybe Not in ages. I loved every page and every word of this book! Colleen Hoover never disappoints, and this surprise novella only cements her as my all-time favorite author.

Okay, first off, can I just say how HAPPY I am that we didn’t have to wait for a whole three and a half months to get a new book from Colleen Hoover!? Maybe Not is a novella, but still. I’m just so happy and thankful to have something new from this amazeballs author. And what’s better than something new from Colleen Hoover? Something new ABOUT WARREN from Maybe Someday!!! Maybe Someday was easily one of my favorite reads of the year, and I absolutely loved Warren in it. But now, after reading his novella in his POV? I fell even more in love with him. I want him to be my best friend AND I want to steal him away from Bridgette. Colleen Hoover’s heroes will be the death of me, I swear.

Maybe Not starts prior to the beginning of Maybe Someday, when Warren and Ridge get a new roommate who’s not exactly the nicest of people. Bridgette is mean and gives no fucks whatsoever, and Warren is reluctantly attracted and intrigued.

I look away from her. I hate that she’s hot. I hate that she’s a brunette, because I really like her long, light brown hair and the way it’s pulled back, all messy and shit.
Dammit!

All Warren and Bridgette do is fight, prank, and insult each other, which makes for some lovely sexual tension.

She licks her bottom lip, and I have to grip the couch cushion to keep myself from attacking that mouth. Her eyes are focused intensely on mine, and we’re both breathing so heavily from our verbal attacks, I can taste her breath on my lips.
“I hate you,” she says through clenched teeth.
“I hated you first,” I hiss back.

So yeah, their fights aren’t exactly the most mature of things, but I loved every single one of their interactions. Warren is already a funny guy (oh my god, I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I think Warren might even be funnier than Daniel from Finding Cinderella…), but Bridgette and Warren are HILARIOUS together! I laughed so, so hard because of these two and how much they hate how much they want each other.

Warren and Bridgette end up falling into bed with each other. Over and over and over again. And slowly, those sexual intimacies lead to other, deeper kinds of intimacies that Bridgette is very unwilling to give Warren. But Warren sees Bridgette for more than the bitchy front she puts up, and he breaks down those walls around her heart.

She’s so confusing. She’s so frustrating. She’s so damn unpredictable.
She’s nothing I’ve ever wanted in a girl. And absolutely everything I need.

I loved this book. Colleen Hoover has a way of creating characters that latch right on to your heart. I smiled so much because of Warren and Bridgette – and also because we also get to see Ridge, Sydney, Maggie, and Brennan. So Colleen Hoover fans, Maybe Someday fans, you definitely do NOT want to miss this special novella. It’ll have you laughing until you cry, and smiling until you just can’t stop.

5 perfect darn hearts!

Maybe Not is a companion novella to Maybe Someday, but can still be read as a standalone. I would still recommend reading Maybe Someday, because it’s where all the characters are first introduced – and also, it’s just plain awesome book.

In the fourth sexy romance by the New York Times bestselling author of Tangled and Twisted, Drew and Kate can’t wait to tie the knot—if they can survive the pre-wedding festivities.

For most of my life, I never imagined I’d get married. But Kate did the impossible: she changed me. I think we can all agree I was pretty frigging awesome before, but now I’m even better.

The road to this day wasn’t all rainbows and boners. There were mistakes and misunderstandings worthy of a Greek tragedy. But Kate and I made it through with our inexhaustible lust, boundless admiration, and everlasting love for one another intact.

That being said, there were some unexpected incidents in Vegas last weekend that could have been a problem. It was kind of…my final test.

I know what you’re thinking—what the hell did you do this time? Relax. Let’s not judge, or call for my castration, until you’ve heard the whole story.

And hold on tight, because you’re in for a wild ride. Did you expect anything less?

I loved this! I freaking adore Drew and Kate, and I’m so glad to have one final book about them and their wedding. It’s a bittersweet ending for sure, because how can I say goodbye to the wonder that is Drew Evans’ POV? Of course, there’s tons of fun-filled hilarity that’s a must in every Emma Chase book. Tied is a wonderful finale to the Tangled series, a series I’ve come to love so much!

The road to this day wasn’t all rainbows and boners. There were some potholes–mistakes–and misunderstandings worthy of a Greek fucking tragedy. But we made it through those times with our inexhaustible lust, boundless admiration, and everlasting love for one another intact.

We’ve come a long way since Tangled, and now Drew and Kate are ready for that coveted HEA. Everyone’s in Vegas to celebrate the upcoming nuptials, and bachelor/bachelorette parties are in store. I absolutely LOVED getting to see everyone one last time before the series ends. This cast of characters Emma Chase has created will forever be in my heart, because they’re all just so wonderful, hilarious, and unforgettable.

I was really thankful that Tied wasn’t as drama-filled as Twisted. I really appreciated how much Drew has matured and grown over the years with Kate by his side. He’s still rude and hilarious, thank god, but he’s also very much a man in love. He’s a wonderful father, and he’s going to be a wonderful husband, and I’m just so glad he and Kate get their HEA they so deserve.

“I love you, Kate. I’m going to love you forever. And whatever comes after forever–I’m going to love you then too.”

If you’re a fan of the series, you absolutely must read Tied. It’s a fantastic conclusion to the series. And if you haven’t started the series yet? You’re missing out on one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. Emma Chase has a talent at writing the male POV, and it doesn’t get any better than Drew Evans.

We lived . . . the same way we loved: with passion, tenderness, and laughter. And every day–every fucking day–to the very fullest.

Release Day Review: Becoming Calder by Mia Sheridan

Becoming Calder by Mia Sheridan

Becoming Calder by Mia Sheridan
Series: A Sign of Love #5 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: October 5th 2014
Links: Ebook • Paperback • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review

There is a place in modern day America with no electricity, no plumbing, and no modern conveniences. In this place, there is no room for dreams, no space for self-expression, and no tolerance for ambition.

In this place, there is a boy with the body of a God and the heart of a warrior. He is strong and faithful and serves his family honorably. But he dares to dream of more.

In this place, there is a girl with the face of an angel and a heart full of courage. To her family, she is the vision of obedient perfection. But she dares to want that which she has been told can never be hers.

Becoming Calder is the story of good versus evil, fear versus bravery, and the truth that the light of love has always found its way into even the darkest of places… From the beginning of time, to the end of the world.

Wow. WOW WOW WOW!!! I am just stunned by this book. I honestly had no idea what I was in for… Becoming Calder simply blew me away – it’s a truly unforgettable, unputdownable story.

I’ve read Mia Sheridan’s previous books and enjoyed them so much, but this, THIS book made me fall madly and deeply with this author. The writing, the characters, the EMOTIONS, everything in this book was absolutely phenomenal. I was hooked onto this story from start to finish. I can’t say enough good things about Becoming Calder – I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

We begin the story with a girl for whom it seems almost all hope is lost. She’s alone, desperate, in need of some help. She’s lost in this world… but why? How did she get into this situation? The entire prologue makes you question and wonder – it basically hooks you onto this story and won’t let you go. You want to know this girl’s story, how it came to be. So we go back to the start of this girl’s story. Back to where it all began – in a place that is separate, different, from society.

The setting Mia Sheridan uses in Calder and Eden’s beautiful story is truly unique and remarkably well-written. It’s a community of people who have removed themselves from modern society in order to live out more simple lives. This is the place known as Acadia, the place where Calder is born and grows up in. He has never known anything different than this simple community and has never needed to know anything different – until a young girl named Eden arrives and his outlook on life is forever changed.

She was mesmerizing. Gracefully beautiful. Ethereal. Mine. That’s the girl I choose. Mine, my mind insisted.

Eden doesn’t know where she is when she’s taken to Acadia, but she’s been given a destiny that she doesn’t want to fulfill. She’s told she must marry Hector, the leader of Acadia, and she has no say in her future. I felt for this girl so much – her fear and confusion comes so clearly off the pages, I just wanted to reach out into the book and comfort her. Becoming Calder spans many years, and throughout these years, Eden has to live separate from everyone else because of her supposed ‘destiny’. She’s being forced into a destiny she doesn’t want, but secretly meeting Calder at their spring, becoming friends with him, falling in love with him, are the best things to have ever happened to her.

He was perfect. And I loved him. I loved him desperately.
And I was destined to marry Hector. Or so I was told. Only destiny hadn’t check with me first. If she had, I would have told her that I was pretty sure Calder Raynes was my destiny–or at least I would have begged for it to be made so.

I feel that an author is truly gifted when I can feel every emotion running through their characters. As Eden and Calder fall in love, it felt like I was falling in love for the first time. I truly experienced everything alongside these characters. My heart was racing, I was breathless, my palms were sweating – this is a book you don’t just read, but experience.

“If I were just a boy, and you were just a girl, I wouldn’t kiss you once like you asked.” He paused and my heart dropped. Oh.
“Eden, I’d kiss you long, and I’d kiss you often.”

Eden and Calder are one of my FAVORITE couples ever. I could read about them forever. They are sweet, heartwarming, intense, beautiful, mesmerizing, and unforgettable together. I wanted so badly for them to get a happily ever after they so rightly deserved. They make plans to leave Acadia, along with Calder’s best friend Xander, but it’s not easy. They really have nothing that would help them survive in modern society, but they won’t give up. They want to have a better life, and they can’t have that in Acadia.

“Do you think there’s a life out there for us?”
Calder paused for a few beats, looking down at me. “I’m going to make a life for us out there. A place for you and me. And until then, yes, I’m going to believe that there is.”

Becoming Calder is a thought-provoking, intense, gorgeous read. So many emotions were running through me while reading this book, and I never wanted it to end. And the writing!! I feel like with each book Mia Sheridan releases, the writing gets better and better, and the writing in Becoming Calder was simply stunning! I loved this book so, so much. Please, please, please read Calder and Eden’s epic story. I promise you won’t regret it. 5 perfect hearts!

Note: Becoming Calder is the first part of Calder and Eden’s story. It is a full length novel, but the story continues in Finding Eden, which releases simultaneously with Becoming Calder (so you don’t have to wait for the sequel). Psst – you’ll want to get your hands on Finding Eden as soon as you finish Becoming Calder!

Read my review of Finding Eden.

Don’t say it unless you mean it…

It’s a simple concept, one I’ve said time and again, but something people don’t seem to comprehend. You should choose every syllable carefully, because you never know when somebody will hold you to your word.

Somebody like me.

I’m not a good man. I’m not. I know. I have enough darkness inside of me to rid the world of every stitch of light. But there’s one I could never harm, one light I couldn’t bring myself to snuff out.

Karissa.

She thinks I’m a monster, and maybe I am. I taunt her with my touch, get a thrill out of torturing her soul. But I’m not the only one. The world is full of monsters, and I’m not the most dangerous one out there.

Not even close…

God help me, I love her.

I do.

And God help anyone who tries to take her from me.

I’ve said it before.
I’ll say it again.
I’m not a good man.
I never will be.

Oh my god, OH MY GOD!!!!!

I freaking LOOOOVED Torture to Her Soul! I mean, I already loved Monster in His Eyes, but Torture in Her Soul was PHENOMENAL! It blew. me. away. I loved every single part of this book, most especially Naz! GAH, the feels this book gave me. I never wanted it to end!

I remember after finishing Monster in His Eyes that I was so, so, so excited for more of Naz and Karissa’s story. I NEEDED to know how it would continue, how it would end! Well, the wait is over now! I’m SO happy that the conclusion to Naz and Karissa’s story is finally here. Theirs is a story you DO NOT want to miss. It’s dark, romantic, delicious, and spectacularly written–you will be sucked into the story, the characters, and the writing… basically everything!

So I guess the first thing I should tell you is that Torture in Her Soul is told in Naz’s POV. Which was pretty much the best surprise for me! And I have to say I abso-freaking-lutely  L O V E D  Naz’s POV. It was so amazing (and a little crazy) being in Naz’s head and knowing his thoughts. He truly is an unforgiving, dark, and dangerous man… but I love him.

I do what I want, take what I want, and make no apologies for any of it. After all, I wasn’t born this way. The world made me who I am, and the world pays for that mistake every day.

It’s actually because of his POV that I fell completely in love with Naz. I was intrigued by him in Monster in the Dark but I never actually LOVED him. His character was fascinating, without a doubt, but I still had my reservations about him. But all of those reservations were wiped away in Torture to Her Soul. I came to understand him, understand his reasons and motives for everything he does. And I unexpectedly fell so hard and fast for him in Torture to Her Soul. But this wasn’t only because I understood him; the main reason I fell in love with Naz is because I could feel his love for Karissa. I could feel that his love for her is unquestionable, that it is the very foundation of his soul. Karissa is the one person he would never intentionally hurt, the one person he would give his life up for.

And maybe there is a monster inside of me.
Scratch that, I know there is.
I feel it rear its ugly head sometimes. I feel it eating away at my body, poisoning my thoughts when the darkness takes over. My insides are black but my heart still beats.
It still beats.
And it fucking beats for her.
So there is a monster inside of me, yes, but it doesn’t make up all of me.
Besides, isn’t there a monster in everybody?

Torture to Her Soul begins with Karissa and Naz at a stalemate. They don’t trust each other, and yet they don’t leave each other, because they still love each other fiercely. Earning back each other’s trust is a huge challenge for them, and as they struggle with their relationship, they also have to deal with people who are dead-set against them even having relationship.

I was a bit frustrated with Karissa, but I understood her, so I could forgive her for being so stubborn against Naz. Her whole world was turned upside down and it was Naz’s fault, so I was sympathetic towards her. Naz was beautifully patient towards Karissa–even though he gets frustrated with her, everything he does is still out of love for her. He’s not a good man, but there isn’t a man alive who’ll love Karissa like he does.

“I’m not a good man,” he says, “but I’m trying. I’m trying. I can’t make you any promises of perfection. I can’t promise I’ll be what you deserve, or what you need, or even what you always want. All I can promise is that I’ll love you until the day I die, and I’ll spend every moment I’m alive trying for you.”

Oh gawd! My heart–Naz completely stole it with his sweet words.

There’s also nonstop suspense and action in this book! Every single moment, Naz and Karissa need to watch their backs. I was flipping through this book so fast, but I never wanted it to end! My heart was pounding throughout this book–I just wanted these two to finally get the HEA they deserved.

Torture to Her Soul is a heart-stopping follow-up to Naz and Karissa’s story. I loved every single page and I LOVED Naz. For those of you who’ve read Monster in His Eyes, get to reading Torture to Her Soul asap! And if you haven’t started Karissa and Naz’s story, I highly recommend doing so. Their story is dark, but it’s also deeply romantic and unforgettable.

She’s oxygen, and without her, I’m dead.

The rules: no kissing on the mouth, no staying the night, no telling anyone, and above all… No falling in love.

Anna Jones just wants to finish college and figure out her life. Falling for star quarterback Drew Baylor is certainly not on her to do list. Confident and charming, he lives in the limelight and is way too gorgeous for his own good. If only she could ignore his heated stares and stop thinking about doing hot and dirty things with him. Easy right?

Too bad he’s committed to making her break every rule…

Football has been good to Drew. It’s given him recognition, two National Championships, and the Heisman. But what he really craves is sexy yet prickly Anna Jones. Her cutting humor and blatant disregard for his fame turns him on like nothing else. But there’s one problem: she’s shut him down. Completely.

That is until a chance encounter leads to the hottest sex of their lives, along with the possibility of something great. Unfortunately, Anna wants it to remain a hook up. Now it’s up to Drew to tempt her with more: more sex, more satisfaction, more time with him. Until she’s truly hooked. It’s a good thing Drew knows all about winning.

All’s fair in love and football…Game on.

I am so totally fangirling right now!! I honestly had NO IDEA how much I would end up loving The Hook Up! After I finished reading, I just kept going WOW. Wow wow wow! The Hook Up is an adorably refreshing read–on the surface, it’s a story of popular boy meets not-so-popular girl, but there’s SO MUCH MORE to it than that. These characters felt real–they had depth and warmth and heart, and I fell completely in love with them and their story.

My mother once told me that the most important moment in my life wouldn’t be when I won the National Championship or even the Super Bowl. It would be when I fell in love.

Drew Baylor is the star quarterback at his college–to his fellow students, he’s like a god. And Anna Jones is less than impressed with his fame, and even less impressed after a bad first impression. Anna is the total opposite of Drew–she hates attention, she wasn’t popular in high school, and she likes to keep to herself. So Anna and Drew? They clash in every way… except one. The instant they meet, it’s lust-at-first-sight. They have never felt such all-encompassing need for someone as much as they have for each other.

Anna tries to stay away from Drew, tries to ignore their attraction, but Drew is persistent. He’s not used to giving up, and he knows that Anna feels the same way as Drew. And finally, one night, they give in to each other and have the most explosive night of their lives.

Neither of us says another word. Blood rushes hot and thick through my veins, as the backs of his fingers skim slowly, oh so slowly, up my arm. His pulse thrums, quick and visible just beneath the gold skin of his throat. I want to lick that spot, put my mouth there and suck. I want him. I want him so badly I’m going up in flames.

This is my first time reading a book by Kristen Callihan, but after reading The Hook Up, I can honestly say that I am a HUGE fan of her writing. It was the writing that hooked me in and didn’t let me go. The dialogue between Drew and Anna was as witty as it could be sweet. These two characters were easily portrayed as multi-dimensional–I am just so impressed with the writing.

After their one night together, Anna and Drew are hooked onto each other. Drew wants to see where this can go, but Anna vehemently doesn’t. Then they both come to agree on having a sex-only relationship. But as much as Anna wants to keep her heart out of the picture, it’s hard not to fall for Drew. Drew, who is unsuspecting in the best of ways. He’s hot and sensual in the bedroom, but outside of it, Drew is sweet and caring and determined to make her see that what they have together could lead to the best thing that could ever happen to them. He was a character that warmed my heart and I fell as head-over-heels in love with him as Anna did.

Life has more color, more flavor, and heat in the few hours I’m with Anna, than I’ve experienced in all the years I’ve partied. Because that fun always felt like I was searching, pushing for some ineffable satisfaction that constantly eluded me. With Anna, I feel like I’ve landed right where I want to be.

Anna is a complicated girl. She has a tough exterior she puts on that she believes in, but underneath is a vulnerable, self-conscious person. Her insecurities were well-written enough that they felt real, which made Anna real. She’s also funny and intelligent. I really liked her character, insecurities and all.

Drew, though, is what made me fall in love with this book. He has a tragic past, but he wasn’t broody or mysterious about it. He’s honest, funny, loyal, and all-around just the perfect package (plus he has a wicked hot bod from all that football practice). I know jack about football, so I was glad that there was the right amount of football in this book that it wasn’t shoved in my face but I could still understand Drew’s love for it. And I utterly looooved how he fell in love with Anna. He doesn’t hold back from her, even though she holds back from him, which endeared me all the more to him. He’s sweet and dorky and the best book boyfriend I could ask for.

“I think you’re beautiful,” he says softly.
“Beauty fades,” I choke out.
“Not when it comes from inside.”

These two make the most adorable couple ever. I was cheering for them from the start. And holy moly, the attraction between them is spot-on. None of the sex felt gratuitous, but all of it had me fanning myself. Drew and Anna’s relationship was incredibly well-written, with so many different facets to it that I never got tired of reading about them. They do have inner demons to face, and there are bumps in their relationship, but I had no doubt that these two could face anything together.

“I like you just the way you are, Drew Baylor.”
Poleaxed. Again. My throat closes too tight to find my voice. I swallow convulsively.
“I like you just the way you are too, Anna Jones.” I’m crazy for you. I fucking adore you.

The thing about The Hook Up is that even though it has cliches, it didn’t feel like one. I adored Drew and Anna, I loved their personal growth and the changing dynamics of their relationship, and I was so impressed with the writing–I just loved everything about this book. And thankfully (at least for me), The Hook Up is a long, fat book. But the pages zipped by for me–I devoured this book so fast it didn’t even seem like a long book. I never wanted Anna and Drew’s story to end.

“You’ve destroyed me, Anna Jones.”
I know exactly what he means, because he’s destroyed me too.

I loved this book so much! It was heartwarming, beautiful, and real, and I recommend it to everyone!

(And can I just say, I’m so, soooooo excited for Drew’s best friend, Gray’s, story. I’m dying to read it! I have a feeling I might love it even more than The Hook Up, if that’s even possible…)
