Possessed by a need to save a beautiful Amazon warrior from the vision he witnessed, Loke snatched her from the midst of the battle between the Third and Fifth realm of the demons, and carried her to his home deep in the black mountains of Hell to protect her. But as the fierce little female awakens, he finds she’s anything but grateful, and his dragon instincts roar to life to warn she might be more to him than an enemy—she might be his fated female.

Anais remembers meeting a handsome warrior in the heat of battle, a man who was her enemy but who looked at her with eyes that held dark heat and wicked promises. When she wakes to find that same dragon shifter has taken her captive, desire is the last thing on her mind, but escaping him to return to Archangel, the hunter organisation she works for, sounds less than appealing when he reveals the reason he took her—to stop her from dying.

Can Loke protect Anais from the dangers of his realm and how far will he go to save her from the future he keeps witnessing? Can Anais resist the fierce attraction that burns between them as hot as fire and stay true to Archangel or will her heart be taken by the dragon?

Now here’s an excerpt from Taken by a Dragon! ❤

excerpt

She had passed out at some point.

It might have been shortly after the dragon shifter who had abducted her had hit a height that had made her vision do strange things, zooming in and out as she had stared wide-eyed at the thousand-foot-plus drop to the forbidding black lands below. She had certainly lost the contents of her stomach at that point.

Anais lay with her eyes closed, feigning unconsciousness, keeping her breathing light and even and her heart rate steady and slow. She wasn’t alone. She could feel the piercing gaze of the man who had snatched her from the midst of the battle.

A battle where they had been enemies, fighting on opposite sides. Her in the army of the Third Realm of the demons, and him on the side of the Fifth Realm.

When she had set eyes on him, laying in the middle of the mad fray, staring at her and Sable as if they were goddesses or something born of myth and legend, the last thing she had expected was him to transform into an incredible and enormous blue dragon, and she definitely hadn’t expected him to snatch her and fly off with her.

Anais breathed slowly, biding her time, waiting for her faculties to all come back. Years of training cycled through her mind, everything she had learned as a huntress for Archangel coming to the fore now that she needed it. Calm flowed through her and she clung to it, using it as a shield as she told herself on repeat that fear wasn’t an emotion she was going to allow herself to feel.

She was going to remain calm because she needed a clear head, one not clouded by panic, if she was going to find a way out of this mess. That same head ached as she tried to think, throbbing behind her eyes and around her temples. Maybe she had passed out from lack of oxygen. It was possible. Anything seemed possible in this insane realm.

Hell.

When she had been told to assemble as part of Sable’s team that would be venturing into Hell on Archangel’s first mission to that new land, she hadn’t known what to expect. It was black and grim, and filled with creatures straight out of the nightmares of most normal people.

She was far from normal though.

She had fought vampires, werewolves, warlocks and demons. Even some fae and cat shifters. All in the name of protecting the unsuspecting humans and the good non-humans who shared the mortal realm from those who would do them harm.

She had never met a dragon shifter though.

Anais slowly opened her eyes.

They settled on a black-dust-covered pair of bare feet and tracked upwards, over smooth blue leather encased legs and a honed naked torso to the shifter who had abducted her.

He crouched beside her, his aquamarine eyes stunning in the weak light from the fire she could feel near her feet and hear as its crackles and pops filled the thick silence. That same golden light played on sculpted cheekbones and profane lips, a mouth made for wicked things. She quickly reminded herself that he had a killer set of teeth behind those sensual lips. Twin rows of tiny white daggers that he had flashed at Sable when her superior had talked about studying him.

He canted his head, causing a hank of wild blue hair to slip down and caress his brow. His dark blue eyebrows dipped low, causing his striking eyes to narrow. Curious. He had looked that way back in the battle. He had stared at her with a strange mixture of fascination, awe, and desire.

That final emotion combined with a sudden thought that she was alone with him and tapped into her deepest female instincts. They overruled the logical part of her that attempted to point out that she was unmolested despite being unconscious and at his mercy for God only knew how long and hijacked control of her body and mind.

Her calm shattered and her pulse spiked in response. She immediately went on the defensive, scrambling backwards across the pebbly black ground, her eyes swiftly darting around to take in her surroundings but never leaving him for longer than a second. Rock walls arched upwards to meet in a ceiling, forming a cave around thirty feet across. She hit one of those walls a few metres into her attempt to flee him and banged the back of her head against the jagged rock.

Her flinch of pain drew a darker look from the man and he rose to his feet and took fluid, silent steps towards her. Danger and sensuality rolled off him with each graceful stride, each shift of his lean hips that had her gaze lowering to his body before she could stop it, taking in how the muscles of his torso flexed beneath his pale skin as he moved. Her heart pounded harder. Her mouth went dry.

Anais shot to her feet and held her hand out. It was a feeble attempt to stop him when she had lost her only weapon, her favourite dagger, during the flight to wherever they were, but it seemed to work.

He halted a short distance away and even backed off a step.

He was incredibly tall.

The demons she had worked with, and the elves, had all been tall, and this man rivalled them. He stood at least as tall as King Thorne of the demons, an impressive six-foot-seven, but where the demon was broadly built, hewn with thick muscles, this male was more athletic, his build slighter but equally as honed.

Anais shook herself and pressed her back against the wall. She was meant to be escaping, not admiring her abductor.

She drew in a deep breath to calm herself and tried to remember all her training. It was hard when he was staring at her, his piercing blue gaze fixed on her with an intensity that shook her. She briefly closed her eyes, sucked down another slow breath, and then nodded as she finally found a sliver of calm, enough to allow her to look objectively at her predicament and search for a way out of it again.

Her gaze flitted to the fire off to her right, where it illuminated the opening of a dark tunnel, and then the cave mouth off to her left. It was dark out there too, a barely discernible difference between the black mountains and the near-black sky of Hell. Either looked like a good option over remaining in the cave with the shifter, but she would take the exit from the cave rather than risking heading deeper into it where she might end up trapped.

Her eyes drifted back to the beautiful male standing before her, his back straight and shoulders squared, and feet noticeably braced apart. He was a warrior all right. He had cut through the battle with ease, taking down demons with one blow of his curved blade. Now he stood in readiness, prepared to defend or attack if she made a move, his fierce gaze tracking her every action.

She knew from his interaction with Sable on the battlefield that he understood English, although she had a feeling she was about to test the limits of his knowledge.

She schooled her expression, steadied her heart, and shifted her feet further apart. His gaze dropped to them and his left eyebrow rose. She used his momentary distraction to assess him. He was far stronger than she was, probably faster too, and he had a weapon. A knife. Sheathed at his waist.

That was her target.

Somehow, she would get her hands on that knife. It wouldn’t level the playing field, but it would make her feel a whole damned lot better about her situation.

His aquamarine eyes lifted back to hers and narrowed again, shimmering with curiosity. Why was he so fascinated with her?

“Amazon,” he husked in a voice so deep and smooth it was like taking a pure hit of the finest chocolate, more than most girls could handle without melting into a puddle of bliss.

Anais shook herself again, forcing herself to focus.

On the battlefield, he had called her and her fellow huntresses Amazons. Sable had responded to that by pressing her boot against his throat and correcting him. He had to know she was a demon-hunter. Unless he hadn’t understood that part.

“I’m not an Amazon. I’m a demon-hunter. I work for Archangel.”

He frowned. “An angel?”

Anais resisted the overwhelming temptation to sigh. “No. Archangel. A hunter organisation. I work for them and believe me when I say that they’ll be coming to get me.”

He snarled, flashing white teeth.

That weren’t all tiny daggers.

She made a mental note of that. It seemed that like vampires, elves and demons, the fangs were under his control. She would have to tell Olivia when she got out of this hellhole and back to Archangel.

But they weren’t at Archangel right now. Her team were back in the Third Realm, fighting against demons, bear shifters and dragons. Her heart started a hard thumping against her chest and she looked back towards the mouth of the cave.

“Take me back,” she said and when he didn’t respond, she turned her focus to him, giving him her best glare. She didn’t dare hope he would do as she asked, but she had to try. He hadn’t laid a hand on her since taking her and he had kept his distance when she had warned him away. If there was a chance she could convince him to return her to her friends, she had to take it. “Take me back to the battle. I have to go back.”

His frown deepened, pinching his blue eyebrows together. Didn’t he understand? She spat a curse at him and his handsome face blackened into a scowl. Apparently he understood that perfectly well.

“Why?” he murmured with a glance towards the cave mouth.

Anais looked there too, heart aching as she thought about the why of it. “Because my friends are there. Fighting. They need me.”

Were they alright? Was Sable okay? Emelia and the others? Her team of hunters had been small and no match for the enemies the Fifth Realm had thrown at them, but the demons of the Third Realm and the elves had been helping them. She had to have faith that her friends were strong enough to survive to fight another day and that the Third Realm would win the war.

The dragon’s steady gaze bore into the side of her face, heating her skin, sucking all of her awareness away from the world and her friends and narrowing it down to only him.

She slid her eyes back to him and found him frowning at her, a confused edge to his expression.

“You fight… as a… unit?” His stilted manner of speaking confirmed that he knew his way around her language but it was limited, not his mother tongue.

She nodded. “Of course.”

“Strange.” He glanced towards the cave mouth again and then back at her.

Anais frowned this time and spoke slowly in the hope he would understand her. “I saw you with the other dragon warriors. You were fighting as a unit.”

His lips quirked into a half-smile that lit up his eyes with sparks of gold fire and heated her insides even when she tried not to let it affect her. “They were heading… in the similar… no, same… direction as me. Dragon warriors do not fight as a unit. Only weak species do.”

Anais folded her arms across her chest and glared at him. Her species weren’t weak. They were strong because they fought together. Only idiots refused to aid each other on the battlefield.

“Take me back.”

He didn’t look inclined to agree to that demand. “What species?”

Her eyebrows dipped together until it dawned on her that he was trying to find out what species she was. He moved on before she could answer.

“What realm?”

“The mortal one.” She looked up at the roof of the cave, trying to emphasise her point, even though she wasn’t sure that Hell was beneath her realm like the traditional interpretation of its position.

Sable had tried to explain to her and a few of their team that Hell was like a separate plane, connected to their one via a series of portals. It was beneath their world but not at the same time. Anais had been inclined to agree with her leader when she had called it a ‘mind fuck’.

“Impossible.” He canted his head to one side again and narrowed his eyes on her, giving her a look that part questioned her sanity and part demanded she tell him the truth. “What realm?”

She did sigh now. “The mortal one. I’m not from here. I’m human.”

He shook his head and advanced a step, and she swiftly raised her hands again, hoping he would halt as he had last time. He didn’t. He moved another step closer, narrowing the distance between them down to under ten feet, and ran his gaze over her, scrutinising every inch of her.

“An Amazon.” His expression was resolute, challenging her to deny what he had evidently decided was the truth about her.

Anais muttered a prayer for strength. “I’m not a damned Amazon! Look… just take me back. If you take me back, I’m sure Sable and Archangel will let you off with a warning.”

He just stared at her.

Her temper frayed despite her best attempts to maintain her calm air as per her training. Enraging an immortal was never a good move, and was definitely number one on the list of things not to do when faced with an enemy, but her emotions and her nerves were shot and she was beginning to feel a little enraged herself.

She was sure there was a saying about pissing women off but clearly this man had never heard it.

She straightened and looked him right in the eyes, refusing to let how beautiful they were distract her.

“Take me back.”

His eyes darkened and his lips compressed into a thin line. “No.”

Fine. He wanted to do things the hard way and she was good with that. If he wouldn’t take her back out of the kindness of his black dead heart, she would force him to do it at knifepoint.

Anais slowly shifted away from the wall of the cave, heading into the open area between the dragon and the fire. He countered her, turning on the spot, keeping his front to hers. A darker edge flickered in his eyes, one that warned he was on to her and knew she intended to attack now.

“Last chance. Take me back.” She was fairly certain that he wasn’t going to take her up on her offer. She knew stubborn when she saw it. She looked at it in the mirror each day. In a battle of stubbornness, he wouldn’t win.

He took a step towards her.

Anais kicked off, lunging towards him, her eyes on the knife sheathed against his left hip.

Now here’s an excerpt from Rock Hard! ❤

excerpt

Charlotte arrived at work at seven thirty the next morning to find Gabriel Bishop’s office door open, but no carnivorous predator inside. A fresh suit was hanging on the back of his door, however, which meant he’d been in already.

Deciding to catch up on e-mails that had come in overnight from international suppliers as well as stores involved in a stock take, she was typing a reply when a sweaty Gabriel arrived fifteen minutes later. He was dressed in black running shorts and a faded University of Auckland T-shirt that was currently sticking to his body.

She’d known he was in shape, but now she realized none of it was an illusion created by his well-cut suits. Okay, she’d already known that, but seeing his muscled body in the flesh was a whole different ball game. He was built like a tank, hard and powerful.

Each of his thighs was thicker than both of hers put together, his biceps toned, his shoulders appearing even wider than usual. Everything about him was big. Civilized clothing didn’t make him look better, she realized—it toned down his intense masculinity. Out of his suits, with the ink on the upper part of his left arm exposed, as well as that on his opposing thigh and…

Her skin hot and lower body clenching, she just nodded in response to his “Good morning.”

Disappearing into his office, he returned with his suit pants and a fresh shirt slung over his arm, along with a sports bag. “Push the meeting with Sales to nine, will you, Ms. Baird? I need to talk to HR about something before then.”

“Yes, sir,” Charlotte said almost soundlessly, but he was already gone, heading toward the employee shower one floor down.

The thigh tattoo went all the way around, the design intricate.

Heart rate a rapid stutter, Charlotte got up after he disappeared and decided to go grab him a coffee. He’d bought her one yesterday after all. She was just being nice. “Oh, shut up, Charlotte,” she muttered once she was in the elevator, and slumped her face into an upraised hand.

The truth was she was running away. Only for a few minutes, but that’s what this was: strategic retreat. Gabriel Bishop was overwhelming. Once, before she’d ever met him and under the influence of cocktails, she’d told Molly she wanted to rip off his shirt and sink her teeth into his pecs.

That desire hadn’t waned even now that she knew he was a T-Rex. Of course, the desire was all strictly in her imagination. The idea of actually handling him in real life? So impossible as to be laughable. Charlie-mouse was not about to play with a predator who could eat her alive and not even notice the bones. The good news was that she could admire him in relative safety—there was no chance in hell he’d ever notice her as a woman.

Getting the coffee from a nearby café, she took it back upstairs. He was in his office when she entered, the striped dark gray of his tie hanging around his neck and his damp hair roughly combed. The scent of clean, fresh soap over warm skin permeated the office. Shooting her a smile that turned him from gorgeous to flat-out devastating, he flipped up the collar of his white shirt to get the tie in place. “Thank you, Ms. Baird.”

Nodding, Charlotte escaped, though she really wanted to stay. She’d never realized how erotic it was to watch a man dress until this precise moment. And she shouldn’t be having these thoughts about her boss—especially since she couldn’t keep from quivering like a rabbit in his presence. Sometimes she just annoyed herself.

“Get to work,” she muttered and knuckled down.

Gabriel was fine for the first hour, but then he began barking orders even a six-armed woman with a split personality would have had trouble handling.

Finally, pushed to the edge, Charlotte snapped. “I’m going as fast as I can!” she yelled when he asked her for something a minute after he’d asked her to complete another task.

He scowled and held out a file. “This is a priority.”

Grabbing it from his hand, she said, “Fine,” and slapped it down on her desk.

It was over an hour later that he disappeared for ten minutes. When he returned, it was to put a small bakery box on her desk. “I think you need something to sweeten your mood today, Ms. Baird.”

What she needed was for the T-Rex who was her boss to stop snarling and growling, she thought as he returned to his office. Not opening the box until her curiosity had almost killed her, she found it held a slice of decadent chocolate cake with a white-chocolate ganache topped with curls of both white and milk chocolate. “I cannot be bribed with cake,” she muttered, eating a bite nonetheless.

In New York Times Bestselling author Nalini Singh’s newest contemporary romance, passion ignites between a gorgeous, sinfully sexy man who built himself up from nothing and a shy woman who has a terrible secret in her past…

Wealthy businessman Gabriel Bishop rules the boardroom with the same determination and ruthlessness that made him a rock star on the rugby field. He knows what he wants, and he’ll go after it no-holds-barred.

And what he wants is Charlotte Baird.

Charlotte knows she’s a mouse. Emotionally scarred and painfully shy, she just wants to do her job and remain as invisible as possible. But the new CEO—a brilliant, broad-shouldered T-Rex of a man who growls and storms through the office, leaving carnage in his wake—clearly has other plans. Plans that may be equal parts business and bedroom.

If Charlotte intends to survive this battle of wits and hearts, the mouse will have to learn to wrangle the T-Rex. Game on.

I have been DYING to read this book – Charlotte and T-Rex’s story – since I read Rock Addiction! I was fascinated by what Charlotte told Molly about her big, sexy, ferocious, tempting boss. Now we finally get the full story! And I’m so happy we did. Rock Hard is a sweet, heartwarming, captivating book that fans of the series won’t want to miss.

He really was a T-Rex, stomping through the company, chewing up people and spitting them out left, right, and center. But the T-Rex wasn’t looking Charlotte’s way, and that was fine with her. She’d just be a quiet, industrious little mouse in the corner, not worth bothering with but too useful to fire.
Then the carnivorous creature decided to notice her.

I think it’s so freaking adorable how Nalini Singh likens Charlotte to a shy mouse and Gabriel to a T-Rex. This heightens how very different they are, which made me all the more desperate for them to get together. Opposites attract? Hell yes! There is a serious, simmering chemistry between Charlotte and her new boss, though Charlotte is way too shy to even make sense of it. Her new boss is intimidating, but in that way-too-sexy, out-of-her-league kind of way. When Gabriel makes Charlotte his personal assistant and they spend more time in close proximity, the tension between them only gets tauter. And it’s only a matter of time before it snaps.

“Come on, Ms. Baird. I promised early on that I wouldn’t bite.” A slow smile. “Unless you make the request, of course.”

Rock Hard is so much more than just a typical office romance between an assistant and her boss. For one thing, Charlotte is incredibly shy. Normally, I wouldn’t be a fan of reading about a heroine who is this shy, but somehow, Charlotte’s character worked for me. It did take me a while to warm up to her, but as we delve deeper into Charlotte’s character, we see the scars from her past that have left her untrusting of other people. My heart went out to Charlotte for the pain she’d been through, and I found myself rooting for her to win the battle against her past. But it’s only with Gabriel that she truly begins to heal. With Gabriel, Charlotte becomes a spitfire, awesome and fierce, qualities she thought she’d never recover. Gabriel makes her feel safe, and how can you not love that about the man?

“I’m right here if you need me, and I’m more than big enough to help you fight your demons. Just say the word.”

Gabriel wants Charlotte – bad. This sexy hunk of a man is determined to win Charlotte, body, mind, and soul. And oh. my. goodness. Gabriel is so delicious and swoon-worthy! He’s a powerhouse in the office as well as in the bedroom, and I loved the way he awakens Charlotte’s sexuality. I was blushing alongside Charlotte sometimes from the things he says!

As deliciously sexy as Gabriel is, I also loved how sweet and patient he is with Charlotte. He can tell she was hurt in her past, so he’s extra protective of her. The romance is slow-going but no less intense. Charlotte’s scars need to be handled delicately, and Gabriel is more than happy to oblige. I was swept away by their sweet, deeply emotional romance. The perfect combination of sexy and intense, and slow and heartwarming, Rock Hard has the the kind of romance that feels very real and genuine – I highly enjoyed Charlotte and Gabriel’s book!

A little side note: Rock Hard can be read purely as a standalone novel. The glimpses that we saw from Rock Addiction are more fully told in Rock Hard, so there’s no need to read the previous book (although I’d still recommend it – it’s a great book!).

Welcome to today’s stop on the blog tour for Hearts of Fire! We have Jack and Lille here with us on the blog for a character interview! Make sure to check out my review, an excerpt, and a giveaway below!

Character Interview: Jack & Lille from Hearts of Fire

Lille and Jack, thank you so much for being here today!
Jack, can you tell us about what you do in the circus?

I’m a fire breather and knife-thrower. Come and see for yourself.

Jack, how did you become a fire-breather?

In my teens I became fascinated with fire and burning. One day I saw a guy on the street eating fire and thought, I could do that. I began researching and learning everything that I could and a year later I was the guy on the street, performing fire tricks for passers-by.

Lille and Jack, what’s the first thing you think of when I say the word “circus”?

Jack: *grumbles* Hard work.
Lille: Elephants!

What are your guys’ favorite thing about the circus? Your favorite acts?

Jack: The freedom of travel. I like the lions.
Lille: Getting to see new places and new people every week. My favourite act is Jack’s, of course *blushes*

Lille, what’s something interesting you’ve learned since joining the circus?

I’ve learned that a gigantic tent can be built overnight. Like seriously, I’m still amazed at how quickly it gets done. I’ve also learned that travel broadens the mind.

Lille and Jack, how do you two feel about falling in love?

Lille: It’s pretty simple. I love being in love.
Jack: *gives Lille an affectionate look* What she said.

What were your first thoughts when you were falling in love with each other?

Lille: This is scary and wonderful.
Jack: I’m falling for her and she’s too good for me.

Do you have any regrets in your life?

Lille: Not running away with the circus sooner!
Jack: Believing lies. Not having faith in my brother.

Where do you see yourselves in ten years?

Lille: Anywhere. Everywhere. With Jack.
Jack: *drapes an arm around Lille* Maybe in a little house in the mountains with a couple of dogs.

And lastly, how would you two describe your relationship?

Jack: Peaceful. Exhilarating. Mine.
Lille: *looks to Jack and smiles* What he said.

Thank you so much for the interview!

The Circus Spektakulär is proud to present Jack McCabe: Fire-breather, knife-thrower, risk-taker.

My uncle lied. I never died.

I breathe fire, eat the poison that almost killed me.

Crowds come to see me night after night. Men for the spectacle, women for the thrill. I’m an oddity to be stared at and desired. With each flame I spit, I risk my life.

I wear scars on my body that will never go away, but the scars inside my head are far more difficult to overlook.

My brother doesn’t know the truth, and if I have it my way, he never will.

Life was going exactly the way I’d planned until Lille came along. She wanted to run away with the circus, have an adventure, but this world was never meant for her.

I try to keep her safe, because she doesn’t know the dangers that are out here on the road. She doesn’t know the monsters that lurk behind the bright lights of the ring. In truth, I could be considered one of them.

We were fashioned from different cloths, never intended to mix. So I watch her. I try not to touch, even when her eyes invite me.

Join us in the Spiegeltent and let us give you a show. Allow my Lille to draw a picture for you in paint and sweat and skin.

The truest love is always the hardest to let in.

*This is a standalone romance that tells the story of Jack McCabe, Jay Fields’ long lost, presumed dead brother. It is not necessary to have read Six of Hearts in order to enjoy Hearts of Fire.*

Having read Six of Hearts (which you don’t need to read prior to Hearts of Fire, but I highly recommend it!), I’ve been so excited for Jay’s brother Jack’s book! Jack was previously presumed dead, but obviously, he’s not… And his story was an absolute delight to read! I adored Jack and Lille’s story – it’s a heartwarming, engaging, fun read that everyone should enjoy.

Lille is a girl who wants… more in life. She’s always followed the rules, her mother’s rules to be exact, but she wants an adventure. She wants to experience everything there is in life, and her once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes in the form of the circus.

After all, there’s no point to an adventure if safety is guaranteed. The whole purpose is the unknown, the danger.
I craved it more than anything.

When Lille joins the circus, it’s a whole new world for her. She’s meeting new people, seeing new things,  visiting new places, and most importantly, she’s having the adventure of her life. But there’s one little hiccup in her adventure – Jack McCabe. He doesn’t want Lille to join the circus for some reason, so he’s a jerk to her. But Lille won’t let anything dampen her adventure, not even sexy, moody Jack.

Jack was a character I had a hard time warming up to, but then found myself loving by the end of the novel. He’s a jerk in the beginning, yes, but he’s a jerk with a lot of hero potential. And when he starts showing that potential, by protecting Lille, caring for her, that’s when I started loving him. I absolutely adored how Jack and Lille were together – they have a hot chemistry, but they’re also so sweet and adorable together!

“You smell like me. Do you know how much that drives me crazy? God, you’re perfect, too perfect. You make me feel so wretched. I want to consume you, steal your light and make myself a little bit more. You’re more, Lille. I want to be more, too.”

There’s so much heart in this novel. First with Lille and Jack’s wonderful romance, and then with Jack’s past and his relationship with his brother Jay. We find out Jack’s side of the story, and my heart broke for him. He hasn’t had the best life, but the way he came out stronger in the end is so admirable. He’s a character that’s just so intriguing and unique, and I love that he’s a fire-breather in the circus!

If you’re a fan of Six of Hearts or anything circus related, you definitely don’t want to miss this book! The romance will sweep you away and the circus life is riveting to read. When I first started this book, I wasn’t too into it, but soon enough, I found myself unable to stop reading. When I read more about Lille, Jack, and the circus, I got hooked – this is definitely a book I can highly recommend!

Now here’s an excerpt from Hearts of Fire! ❤

Somebody swore profusely from behind me, and I turned to find Jack trying to light a cigarette. The wind wasn’t doing him any favours, and he couldn’t get the flame to stay lit. Not wanting him to see me, I began walking swiftly in the opposite direction. I didn’t get far when he was suddenly behind me. He looped his finger through my belt and practically dragged me to the corner he’d been standing in.

“What the fu….”

“Stay still,” he ordered. “I need you to block the wind.”

I didn’t have any snappy comebacks, so I simply stood there, amazed by his gruffness. Hadn’t anyone ever taught him simple manners? When I looked at him, I thought that maybe they hadn’t. I could easily imagine him as a little Mowgli type, being raised by animals in the jungle.

He flicked the lighter and finally got the smoke lit. Inhaling deeply, then exhaling, he watched me all the while. I shivered, and not from the cold. I felt like there was an atmosphere between us, but it was more than likely all on my end. I was good at imagining things, especially sexual tension. And I was well-acquainted with the one-sided kind.

“Are my services required further, sir?” I asked with a hint of sass. I mean, I’d been his wind-blocker, and he hadn’t even said thanks.

Just like last night, he almost smiled, and I hated that it was wondrous. I could have painted an entire mural of his jaw line alone. He flicked off the ash and leaned back against the wall behind him.

“So, you’re staying with Lola?”

“Yes, and Violet.”

“That’ll be fun.”

“Are you being sarcastic?”

“Are you?”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re weird.”

He took a step forward and stared down at me, teeth flashing as he spoke. “And I bet I could make you like it.”

ARC Review: Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs

Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs

Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs
Series: Alpha & Omega #4 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: March 3rd 2015
Purchase: Ebook • Hardcover
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles’s role as his father’s enforcer. This time, their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way…

Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae’s cold war with humanity is about to heat up—and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.

First off, I’m a huge fan of Patricia Briggs! Her paranormal world of the Mercy Thompson series and the Alpha & Omega series (Charles and Anna’s series) is unlike any other. And though I adore Mercy’s series, I have to say I love Charles and Anna’s books more. Every single book of theirs, I’ve wholeheartedly loved – I highly recommend reading this series (and the Mercy books too) if you’re a fan of paranormal and/or urban fantasy.

Anna and Charles make up one of my all-time favorite fictional couples in the history of fictional couples. I love them as a couple, but I also love them as individuals. From their very first book (or more like, from their first novella), I was hooked onto them and their story. They’re not the typical badass hero/heroine of urban fantasy books. I mean, they definitely are badass, but they’re way more subtle about it. As an Omega, Anna has a calming effect on werewolves, and she doesn’t feel the need to obey werewolves who have a higher rank in the pack. Charles is pure alpha – as the Marrok’s son and enforcer, he is one of the most dominant werewolves and he delivers justice to those who deserve it. Despite their differences, I honestly can’t think of anyone better suited for Charles than Anna, and vice versa. The mutual respect and love they have for each other is palpable in each book – they’re the refreshing sort of couple that I could never get tired of reading about.

“The day I met you was the first day I ever felt joy.”

As a birthday present for Anna, Charles wants to buy her a horse. He takes them to see an old friend of his who has a horse ranch, but there’s trouble stirring in town when they get there. I don’t want to say much about the plot because it’s so much better to just experience it in its entirety, but I want to say that Patricia Briggs never fails to make me hooked onto her stories. The plot is perfectly paced with just the right amount of action, and the mystery is well-written and intriguing. I also loved seeing a new side of Charles and learning more about his past – Joseph is one of the few people Charles loves and can truly call a friend, and it was great seeing him happy around someone who wasn’t Anna, Bran, or Samuel.

The writing is impeccable as always. I don’t know how Patricia Briggs does it, but the way she writes the Alpha & Omega series is simply beautiful, this book especially. As someone who knows almost nothing about horses, I can say that that aspect of the story was flawlessly incorporated. I fell in love once again with Anna and Charles – they are truly one of the few couples who are near and dear to my heart. Their subtle humor, their sweet, tender moments, everything was perfectly written. I honestly wish their series would never end, because I could read about them forever!

Dead Heat is another fantastic, gripping, gorgeously-written installment in one of my favorite series ever. I loved every single word of this book!
