The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team proves that love is a power play. As Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling series continues, the league’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Second chance romances are favorite kinds of romances to read, so when I heard Sawyer Bennett was going to have one in her Cold Fury Hockey series, I couldn’t wait! I adore this series – sexy hockey players get me every time. Hawke is the fifth book in the series, though it can be read as a standalone. Though this isn’t my favorite of the series, it’s still got that sweetness and sexiness that Sawyer Bennett excels at writing. If you enjoyed the previous books in the series, you’re sure to enjoy Hawke too.

I’m not prepared to see her at all because I’m not sure I can behave myself around her. I want her and yet I don’t want to want her.
And I mean I want her viciously.

Seven years ago, Hawke and Vale were twenty, volatile, and head over heels in love with each other. But when Vale breaks up with Hawke out of the blue right before he’s set to leave to play professional hockey, he’s understandably devastated and confused. The both of them move on and never once look back, until their lives collide again, now that Hawke is part of the Cold Fury team and Vale is working for the team as the assistant athletic trainer.

I wonder, had this one horrific event not occurred, would we have grown together over the years, or apart?
I’d like to think together, because despite the fact we were young and probably clueless as to what real commitment was like, there was something we had that I’ve never found again, and I’m pretty sure Vale hasn’t either.
And that was a tethering of our souls.

Hawke is… predictable. A fun predictable, but still, there just wasn’t anything about this story that popped out to me. I didn’t connect all that well with Vale or Hawke so I didn’t love this like I hoped to. I hate when miscommunication is the reason for a breakup, so I was a little disappointed that that was the reason for this couple’s fallout. Plus, I didn’t like that Hawke kept blaming everything that went wrong with their relationship on Vale. Yes, she has most of the blame, but he has some part in it too for not fighting for her. He got on my nerves more than a few times, honestly. But while I wasn’t a fan of Hawke’s character, I absolutely adored Vale. She’s so much more mature now than she was at twenty and she’s been working to the bone to help with her father’s sickness. It sucks when you like one main character over another, but sadly this was the case for me, so it was hard to fully love the story because of this.

This is definitely my least favorite of the series, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it at all, because there were still some fun, entertaining parts to this. Hawke is frustrating at times, but also sweet at others. And since it’s Sawyer Bennett, it’s also sexy as hell. I’m definitely looking forward to Max’s story now, and I hope it won’t be the last of the series!

Release Day Review: Rocked by Love by Christine Warren

Rocked by Love by Christine Warren
Series: Gargoyles #4 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: March 1st 2016
Links: EbookPaperbackGoodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Bestselling author Christine Warren returns to the secret world of gargoyles-where legends come alive, and lovers are caught between a rock and a hard place…

Kylie Kramer knows that she’s putting her life in danger when she decides to investigate her friend’s mysterious death. What she doesn’t know is that she’s being watched over by a powerful protector. A legend in stone who has defended humanity throughout the ages. A rock-hard savior who swoops down from the sky, scoops Kylie into his impossibly strong arms, and draws her into a world that no mortal woman can imagine…or resist.

ROCKED BY LOVE

As the strongest of the gargoyles, Dag is sworn to destroy the demons that threaten Kylie’s world before returning to his stony slumber. But the burning desire she ignites in him is even harder to fight-an all-consuming force that, once unleashed, can never be tamed. As their passion grows, so do the ranks of a demonic army plotting to take over the earth. When the ultimate battle begins, Dag and Kylie must face some demons of their own-to carve out a love that’s stronger than time…

This is actually the first book I’ve read in the series, though it can be read completely as a standalone. I had no problems going into Rocked by Love without having read the previous books in the series, so if you’re planning to jump right into this at book 4 like I did, you can!

I’ve had Christine Warren’s Gargoyles series on my radar because, well, it’s about gargoyles! It’s something different and not what I’m used to, so I decided to give it a go. While I didn’t completely love this book, I still really enjoyed it and would definitely go back and read the rest of the series. The gargoyles in this world are fascinating – and the women they fall in love with are top-notch heroines I admire.

Kylie Kramer is a computer geek genius and has been using her skills to find out the reason why her best friend was mysteriously killed. But while walking one day she’s attacked, only to be saved by what she thought was a statue. Dag is the gargoyle statue brought to life, and he’s the fourth out of seven to awaken in order to defeat the seven demons and save mankind. Dag and Kylie may be meant for each other as Guardian and Warden, but they don’t exactly get along.

He wondered if he would ever get used to a human who questioned his every word or action simply on general principle. In the past, most of them cowered when they saw him, if they didn’t run screaming in terror. But not this female. She made him want to scream.

Kylie is probably my favorite part of this book – she’s so quirky and hilarious. She says the funniest things, and I couldn’t help myself cracking up every time she opened her mouth. Especially when she’s thrust into this new paranormal world and she can’t help herself but annoy her new gargoyle buddy. Dag and Kylie have some great banter together, and underlying chemistry between them is also a plus. I enjoyed their slowly growing feelings for each other and how the romance played out between them.

“You are precious to anyone who takes as much as a moment to get to know you, little one, because to know you is to see your true beauty.” His arms tightened around her and he nuzzled the soft, fragile skin at her temple. “You are very, very precious to me.”

The action in this book, however, wasn’t anything special. Not much happens actually for the majority of the book, so I kept waiting for something exciting to occur. The story lagged a bit during the middle and I found myself a little bored at times. The romance did keep me interested, but I really would’ve liked to see more action in this book.

Overall, I did still like Rocked by Love. The characters were fun and hilarious, and I enjoyed getting to know the other couples from the previous books. I liked that Kylie and Dag’s romance wrapped up, but the over-arcing storyline will continue on. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

Release Day Review + Giveaway: Beautiful Boss by Christina Lauren

Beautiful Boss by Christina Lauren

Beautiful Boss by Christina Lauren
Series: Beautiful Bastard #4.5 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: February 29th 2016
Links: Ebook • Paperback • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

The ninth work in the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling series that started with Beautiful Bastard. In this e-novella, Will Sumner and Hanna Bergstrom (from Beautiful Player) find that a wedding and everlasting love were just the beginning.

One Player tamed. One nerd girl satisfied. And one more major life decision to make. When Will fell for Hanna, her quirky sense of humor and fierce dedication to her career were part of the attraction. (Not to mention her coy newbie attitude toward sex and her willingness to let him teach her everything.) But when the job offers start rolling in for her—and oh, they do—Hanna has trouble deciding what she wants, where they should live, and how much she should burden Will with the decision. Magic between the sheets is only one part of a relationship…getting on the same page is quite another altogether.

Y’all. Christina Lauren is the BOMB. Beautiful Boss was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, because I love anything and everything that has to do with Will Sumner, and CLo did NOT disappoint. Beautiful Player is one of my favorite books, if not THE favorite book, by this author duo, so to say I was happy there would be a novella sequel would be an understatement. Beautiful Boss was pretty much a delight to read – revisiting Will and Hanna and the rest of the BB gang just made me so incredibly happy. If you love Christina Lauren’s books and Beautiful Player, then you absolutely need to get your hands on this latest novella installment.

“There is no way to mess this up,” I said, right against her mouth. “Even if we didn’t get married tomorrow, you’re the love of my life. I’m with you until we both die, at the same time, when I am one hundred and you are ninety-three.”

Beautiful Boss centers around Will and Hanna’s upcoming wedding and the new chapter of their lives as husband and wife they’re about the start. Hanna has been visiting different schools around the country to get a feel for what job offer to accept, but she’s yet to make a decision. Will is supportive of her but is getting frustrated with the distance between them every time she leaves to visit a school. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but trust me, this novella is just incredible. It’s sexy as hell, romantic, charming, and so, so funny. Hanna and Will are the biggest science nerds ever, and I love them even more after reading Beautiful Boss.

Christina Lauren fans won’t be disappointed with this novella. It’s got their wonderful writing, two lovable, kickass characters, aaand even a little man-on-man kiss that will have you in stitches. And oh my god, Will is as swoon-worthy as ever! He will forever reign as one of my favorite book boyfriends EVER. If you haven’t read Beautiful Player yet (or even the series), I highly recommend it if you love brilliantly written contemporary romances. Then you can get on reading Beautiful Boss and experience the wonder that is Will and Hanna’s married life.

Charis Michaels makes her Avon Impulse debut with the first book in her new historical romance series, The Bachelor Lords of London…featuring a brooding earl and the American heiress who charms him.

American heiress Piety Grey is on the run. Suddenly in London and facing the renovation of a crumbling townhouse, she’s determined to make a new life for herself—anything is better than returning to New York City where a cruel mother and horrid betrothal await her. The last thing she needs is a dark, tempting earl inciting her at every turn…

Trevor Rheese, the Earl of Falcondale, isn’t interested in being a good neighbor. After fifteen years of familial obligation, he’s finally free. But when the disarmingly beautiful Piety bursts through his wall—and into his life—his newfound freedom is threatened…even as his curiosity is piqued.

Once Piety’s family arrives in London, Falcondale suddenly finds himself in the midst of a mock courtship to protect the seductive woman who’s turned his world upside down. It’s all for show—or at least it should be. But if Falcondale isn’t careful, he may find a very real happily ever after with the woman of his dreams…

I love reading historical romances every once in a while in between the contemporaries I usually read, and when I saw the blurb for The Earl Next Door, it called to me. I was surprised by how charming this book was – the characters, especially the heroine, were an absolute delight to read. The slow pacing of the story though, made it a little difficult to get through the book, but I enjoyed this overall. There’s humor, a slow-burn romance, and adorably quirky characters – I’m glad I didn’t give up on this book when I wanted to early on!

Piety Grey has just moved to London to save her fortune as an American heiress from her forceful mother and step-brothers. She’s moved into a home in need of repair, and next door to Trevor Rheese, the Earl of Falcondale. Whereas Piety is bubbly and light and so full of goodness, Trevor is a recluse and a sarcastic, moody man. All he wants is peace and solitude, but all his hopes for a quiet life are dashed the second Piety moves in next door. Not only does she invade his home through their connecting passage, but the desire she awakens in him can’t be ignored.

“I don’t want anyone but you,” he said, kissing her. “You are the beginning and the end for me. More than enough. You are far better than I deserve. No one could ever exceed you, ever, and I will take these memories with me to my grave.”

Piety is absolutely my favorite part of The Earl Next Door. I don’t think I’ve ever read a more adorable heroine! She’s sweet, cute, sassy, independent, and can definitely hold her own against Mr. Go-Away-I-Want-To-Be-Alone. She’s not the type of girl to give up taking down the walls around Trevor’s heart, and I loved her for it. I also enjoyed the secondary characters Jocelyn, Joseph, and Lady Frinfrock, who brought so much humor and light-heartedness to the story. The romance, despite its slow pace, is also wonderful. Even when I wanted things to hurry up, I appreciated how sweet everything turned out between Piety and Trevor. Trevor falling for Piety against his wishes is swoon-worthy and seriously so sweet to read.

“She has become . . . She has become life itself to me, and without her—ill, fine, injured, whole—I hardly care to live at all.”

Despite all I loved about this book, it was a bit of a struggle to get through the whole thing, because of its length and slow pace. I skimmed a bit at the parts that didn’t involved the romance, which was actual a lot more than I expected. There’s a lot going on in The Earl Next Door, but if you focus on the romance, it’s much more enjoyable. I’d definitely recommend this book if you’re a fan of historical romances, like your stories slow, and you have a lot of patience.

Now here’s an excerpt from The Earl Next Door! ❤

“Such traffic in the street today,” mumbled Miss Breedlowe.

“Nonsense,” said Lady Frinfrock, her eyes pinned on the carriage. “There is no traffic in Henrietta Place. Not on this day or any day. Such recklessness? A conveyance of this size? It’s wholly irregular!”

“Indeed. Perhaps a neighbor is expecting out-of-town guests?”

“No relation to the occupants of this street could afford a vehicle so grand,” she said. “Except, of course, for me. And I have no relatives.”

“Not even the new earl, Lord Falcondale?”

The marchioness harrumphed. “He cannot even afford a gardener.”

The carriage door sprang open, and Lady Frinfrock leaned in.

“Oh, look,” said Miss Breedlowe, cheerful interest in her voice. “It’s a young woman. How beautiful she is. And her gown. And hat,” she marveled. “Oh, she’s brought someone with her. A companion. Hmm. Perhaps a servant?” Her voice went a little off, and she crooked her head to the side, studying the two women collecting in the street.

“Is that an African?” Lady Frinfrock nearly shouted, planting both gloved palms on the spotless glass of the window.

“I do believe her companion is an…aboriginal woman of some sort,” croaked Miss Breedlowe, herself moving closer to the glass.

“But whatever business could they have in Henrietta Place?”

Miss Breedlowe reached out a hand to steady her. “Do take care, my lady. Perhaps we should return to the comfort of the chairs.”

“I shall not be comfortable in chairs,” said the marchioness, swatting her away. “But has the young woman come alone?” She tapped a bony finger on the glass. “Where is her family? Her husband or parents?”

“Perhaps the men who have accompanied her are her—”

“Servants, clearly,” interrupted the marchioness. “Look, Miss Breedlowe. Trunk after trunk. Crates and baskets. Oh, God.” Her breath fogged the glass. “They are conveying it to the former front door of Cecil Panhearst’s old house. It’s been sealed like a tomb for the better part of a decade.”

“So they are. Perhaps you’re to have a second new neighbor.”

“A lone young woman and an African?” She moved closer to the window.

“Highly likely, I’d say. It would appear they are…? Yes, they are unpacking.

“Well, that cannot be,” Lady Frinfrock declared, shaking her head at the street. “I won’t stand for it. Not without knowing who she may be, or where she came from. And why she is accompanied by an African.”

“Oh, do not worry,” chuckled Miss Breedlowe, “the servants will learn her story soon enough. If she has any staff at all, they will talk with the other servants on the street.”

For the first time since the carriage arrived, the marchioness lifted her eyes from the window and turned to stare at the nurse.

“Why, what an excellent idea, Miss Breedlowe.” She raised her cane and jabbed it in the direction of the startled younger woman. “How resourceful you are. The servants will talk.” She raised one eyebrow. “They will learn her story soon enough.”

As Miss Breedlowe stared in disbelief, the marchioness scrunched her face and then swung the tip of her cane in the direction of door.

“Oh, no, my lady,” said Miss Breedlowe, backing away. “You cannot mean me.”

“Oh, yes, ‘tis exactly what I mean. Finally, a suitable application for your indeterminate hovering and resigned sighs. We shall devise a reason for you to approach her, and you will discover her business in my street. It is our duty as mindful, responsible residents to know.”

“But I was speaking of the maids, my lady. The kitchen boys. I…”

“The maids are unreliable. The kitchen boys are inarticulate. You, however, are ideal for this sort of thing. Steel yourself, Miss Breedlowe. We cannot know what manner of objectionable thing she may say or do. Better fetch your gloves. And your hat.”

Online, any fantasy is possible. But when virtual lovers decide to meet in real life, the temperature rises-and so do the stakes.

Safety. Anonymity. Invisibility. Those are just a few advantages of Internet “dating.” Even better, as far as Hannah Miller is concerned, is the fact that she can shed all inhibitions without worrying about what he thinks of her figure or her face. “He” is bikerboy357, the man who knows what Hannah likes, and wants her-every night-as much as she wants him. When he asks to meet, Hannah hesitates. But the temptation is too strong. And after one look into his sultry green eyes, there’s no turning back.

Cade MacKenzie’s never met a woman who wasn’t blinded by his billion-dollar net worth, but “JustAGurl456” knows neither his face nor his name. Her words are so smart, sweet, and scorchingly sexy that Cade’s willing to gamble she’ll be just as amazing in person. And she is. But even as every delicious encounter makes Cade want Hannah more, what he wants most is her trust. It’s something all his money can’t buy. And now, Cade will do anything to earn it . . .

I’m a sucker for the occasional billionaire book, so when I read the blurb for Bidding on the Billionaire, I had to read it! Plus, the premise about online lovers sounded amazing, so I was totally on board for this book. Overall, this was pretty much a quick, fun, sexy read, and though I didn’t particularly LOVE it, it’s a good read to pass the time.

Hannah Miller and Cade MacKenzie have been anonymous online lovers for a few months now, and more and more each day they become deeply involved with each other, even though they still haven’t revealed their real names. Hannah is a shy bookstore owner and Cade is a workaholic billionaire. They couldn’t be more different, but one phone call leads to an in-person meeting, and the chemistry between them in real life is just as hot as it is online. So they decide to let themselves indulge in one another for two weeks only – but what happens when they start to fall for each other and they’re both too scarred from their pasts to commit to a relationship?

I had a lot of fun with this book. I didn’t connect with Hannah or Cade, but I enjoyed their characters nonetheless. They’re both good people, but the exes in their lives have left them too emotionally hurt to ever want to put their hearts on the line again. I liked the way these two fell for one another, albeit quickly, and how they soothed each others’ hurts and started to believe in love again. I’d definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for something quick and easy with a hot billionaire hero. 😉
