“I don’t want to kill you, not anymore.” He said, coming to face me. “I want to be with you. I want to hold you and touch you and–” He exhaled. “I. Want. You.”

Violet Ashton is an exemplary angel with ninety-nine kills under her belt.

Nothing could make her underestimate herself until she’s sent to hunt down Death, one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. Or as Violet knows him–Lucas Cross, her ex-mentor and ex-lover. Defining the line between what her job requires and what her heart wants is the hardest decision she’s ever had to make.

Lucas Cross is an angel turned demon.

The only thing he had to worry about was helping his brothers end the world, that was until Violet blew into town. From the moment he saw her again his normal self has fought hard to keep down the demon that desperately wants to kill her. Torn between love and hate, Lucas is determined to push all of Violet’s limits.

The feud between the Never Dark realm and The Underworld is at boiling point and if Violet can’t complete her mission Earth will pay the ultimate price.

review

This was such an interesting take on angels! I had no idea what to expect going into this but I did enjoy it. Violet is the snarky, sarcastic heroine, and she’s also an angel. Lucas is the former angel turned demon, also known as Death from the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The book is told in both their POVs, which was great, since I loved getting to see both their perspectives, the emotional angst from them.

Violet is a very… interesting character. She’s a bit too harsh and critical of things for my liking, but I enjoyed her brashness and toughness. She’s a pretty badass angel. She fights very well (she’s already killed 99 demons!) and isn’t afraid to fight bigger and badder things. The best part about her is the emotional turmoil going on when she sees her former lover, Lucas, who’s now… evil. She loved him once, back when he was an angel and, well, good, but now… she has to kill him. Isn’t that just the most intriguing thing ever? Having to kill the love of your life because he turned evil. Like, wow.

I think I liked reading Lucas’s POV more than Violet’s, because he didn’t grate on my nerves as much as Violet did. Plus, he’s got even more angst inside of him. He’s a freaking demon, but used to be good. He’s still in love with Violet, but he’s got evil urges within him that make his want to kill her and pretty much everything else in the world. He has to hold himself back, because he doesn’t want to kill Violet. What he wants is her, but a relationship between them now is even more forbidden than it already was before Lucas turned dark. Like I said, SO much angst.

When Lucas and Violet see each other again, the feelings they have between them are explosive. They want to kill each other one second, and lust for each other the next. There was both love and hate, and you never knew what you were going to get each time they saw each other. The story is very fast paced, with fight scenes and sexy scenes throughout. If you’re looking for an action-y, paranormal romance with a little bittersweetness, then you should definitely check out Dark Wings. There’s also going to be a sequel in The Never Dark series called Torn Wings!

excerpt

I spotted him leaving Sequin nightclub. Sequin used to be the most luxurious nightclub this side of Concave City. I glanced up at its dirty exterior and cringed. Things have changed since my last visit. I stared long and hard at the club. Its walls were purple and pale, coated in a thin layer of dirt. Even at midnight I could tell how neglected the club was. The dazzling, bright white neon sign that read ‘SEQUIN’ made the building’s obvious neglect look more, well, obvious.

I watched as he lured a scantily clothed woman into a nearby alley and cringed as she bent over in front of him to pick up something she had ‘dropped.’ To me, the only thing she seemed to have dropped was her morals. When she straightened, she continued to stumble further into the alley. The bottom of her ass cheeks popped out from underneath her micro-micro mini skirt with every step she took and to top off her outrageous outfit, she wasn’t wearing a top—unless a bikini top doused in sequins counted as an appropriate blouse these days. Maybe it did? It had been a few years since I’d paid any attention to Earth’s fashion. I was human once, but then I died, and when I died, I was chosen to become an angel, to protect the Earth and all of its inhabitants. I’m from the Never Dark realm, an alternate universe. I’m not your typical run-of-the-mill guardian angel that protects you or guides you—that’s preschool stuff. I’m a special kind of angel. I hunt things that go bump in the night. Your worst nightmare wouldn’t even come close to the horrors that I’ve seen. No, it wasn’t vampires—vampires don’t exist. Angels destroyed them all decades ago, every last sparkly one of them, and you’re welcome. I hunt various creatures and demons that have managed to escape from the Underworld. Tonight, that demon was Death. This Death didn’t walk around wearing a long black robe, nor did he carry a big scythe. This Death was deadlier—much deadlier. He was one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse sent to end the world, only he is much, much too early. It’s 2013 and the world isn’t supposed to end until the year 3000. My job was to find out what he’s doing here and get him to leave. If he doesn’t comply, I’ll kill him, and if I kill him, it’d be my one hundredth demon kill—not bad, if I do say so myself.

“I see you, Mr. One Hundred,” I muttered.

In my mind I was already adding another notch to my belt. I pulled the tasteless, over-chewed piece of gum from my mouth and stuck it in an empty ashtray that was concealed in my car door. I watched them from a distance, just waiting for the right time to attack. Then his smoldering brown eyes met mine and something knotted deep in my stomach, catching me off guard. I was shocked, but I didn’t let it register on my face. This wasn’t supposed to happen. He wasn’t supposed to see me, at least not yet. I wanted to watch him for a little while first. His short, black hair was disorganized, like a woman had just run her hands through it. His dark brown eyes watched me intently and he ran his wet tongue along his bottom lip. I swallowed hard as something hot and wild settled in my core. My ability to see well in the dark made it easier for me to see him smirk as he cocked his head to the side and studied me curiously. The skank followed his line of sight, but she couldn’t see well enough to know what he was looking at. She flicked her long blonde hair over her shoulder and placed her hands on his chest, trailing them down his fine, black suit and then back up before resting on his tie. Her lips moved as she spoke to him. When he didn’t respond, she leaned closer and her lips barely grazed his ear. Again, he didn’t acknowledge her. Those dark eyes only saw me. I grabbed the gun from my glove box and climbed out of the car. I clipped the gun onto its holster at the back of my black leather catsuit. It was mandatory that all field angels wear the required uniform. The catsuit was designed for speed and protection. Having it skin tight helped me move faster and prevented it from snagging on foreign objects.

I walked toward him, but he didn’t run from me like most demons did. Instead, he chuckled, exposing his perfect white teeth. He was exactly  how I remembered—perfect and incredibly sexy. My stomach turned at the thought of even thinking something so wrong.

The girl finally spotted me and took a step forward, shielding a quarter of Death’s body. I stopped when I came within ten yards of them, my legs shoulder-width apart. I raised my arms above my head and tightened my ponytail. My bright red hair draped over my shoulder.

“I was wondering when I’d see you again.” His voice was deep and husky. Images of melted caramel dripping from a spoon filled my mind. The skank turned abruptly to face him. “Who the fuck is she, Noah?” At least he’s smart enough to use a fake name.

“Who the fu—” Her voice was annoying. Rapidly, I drew my gun and shot the girl in the neck. With a quiet gasp, she crumpled to the cold, dirty floor. I didn’t kill her—I shot her with a tranquilizer and now she was sleeping it off. I returned the gun to its holster. A tranquilizer wouldn’t work on him, and besides, I’d prefer to fight him with my hands.

“Buzz kill,” he groaned, running his fingers through his hair. My fingers twitched at his movement.

“Why are you here?” I demanded.

“I could ask you the same thing.”

I narrowed my eyes at him as he bent down and stroked the girl’s cheek with the back of his finger. I ignored the pang of jealousy that coursed through my chest. You see, I knew Death personally—a long time ago, before he became Death, before he was torn in two. Back then he was an angel known as Lucas and he was the one that recruited me. He taught me everything I know about demons and how to kill them. I stared at him; he hadn’t changed in the slightest. He still had those high cheekbones and big brown eyes. His hairstyle was the same—short and messy. He straightened himself and took a few steps toward me.

“You’re as beautiful as I remember, V. Not that I expected anything short of perfection.” He licked his bottom lip and looked me up and down. His eyes lingered on my breasts for a second longer and I clenched my jaw. V was Lucas’s nickname for me. It was short for Violet. There was once a time when that nickname brought me immeasurable happiness, but now it brought me nothing but pain.

His brown eyes glistened dangerously. “Come home with me? For old time’s sake?” A cocky smile spread over his face. There was a time when he only had to bat an eyelid at me wrong and I’d jump him. I wasn’t going to lie, he looked as incredible as I remembered—maybe even more now he had that extra ‘badness’ about him…but it was different now. I hated seeing him like this, he was another person entirely. He wasn’t the same man I had met only a few years ago. Lucas took a few more steps toward me, but I didn’t budge.

He continued, ignoring my silence. “We were good together… once.”

I cringed, recalling our training sessions together—his sweat, my sweat, how his strong hands felt on my body. A warm flush flooded me, resting at my core. I shook my head. He’s screwing with you. It isn’t him! He isn’t Lucas, he’s Death. Give him the warning and leave.

“I don’t know whether your Council told you or not, but you are nine hundred and eighty-seven years early.”

He chuckled and it made me flinch, because for a few seconds, I forgot he was my enemy. “I can do as I please. I’m not hurting anybody.”

Lucas—Death was a category five demon. In my world, demons are ranked by the damage they do. The Banshee, Tracker demons, Seers, and other demons that blend in with society are category one demons. They’re allowed to roam Earth freely provided they don’t kill anybody, and most of the time, they didn’t. Category two demons were Succubi and Incubi. They pass off as human easy enough and generally stick to morally questionable careers in the sex industry, but could inflict minimal damage to one person if they wanted to. Category three demons were your vampires, but they’re gone now, leaving only werewolves and Shards in that category. Shards are a catlike demon that preys on wild animals and occasionally on humans. Category four demons are fallen angels and your average human-like demons. An angel becomes a demon once they’ve been banished from the Never Dark realm. Most fallen angels choose to leave the Never Dark realm once they realize their powers would be a little stronger if they embrace their darker side. A human can become a demon if they’re turned by another demon. This gives them superhuman strength. Category five demons are the worst. Cat five demons can’t appear on Earth without causing mass destruction and death. These demons are Skatters (dumb, gimp-like creatures that are sent into a frenzy by a rapidly beating heart), necromancers, the four Horsemen of the apocalypse, and the Underworld Council. These demons are highly dangerous and must be removed from Earth immediately, unless scheduled otherwise. It’s sad, but sometimes life on Earth needs to be balanced out. Only once in history has the Earth been completely wiped of life by the four Horsemen and then started again… or so I was told.

I swallowed hard, remembering to force some kind of formality into my voice. “You’re not welcome here and if you don’t leave now, I’ll kill you.”

His eyes darkened and narrowed. “You forget one thing, my sweet V.”

“And what’s that?”

“I taught you everything you know.” His sinfully dark voice wrapped around the words like a boa constrictor wraps around its victim. Lucas swung at me, but I managed to duck just in time. He came at me full force, throwing punches and kicks. Most of them I managed to dodge, until one kick hit me square in the stomach. I fell backwards, hitting my head against the concrete. My vision blurred for a few seconds and I shook my head, trying to get my bearings. A few seconds later my vision returned and I used my wrists to spring back onto my feet. Lucas removed his jacket, throwing it down onto the damp concrete and rolled up the sleeves of his white shirt.

“You’re faster, stronger, and meaner than you used to be, but I still don’t think that’s enough to beat me.”

I sprang toward him, hoping to catch him off guard, but even in the middle of rolling up his sleeves he was expecting my attack. Nothing is more infuriating than an opponent that knows what you’re going to do before you do it. He grabbed me by the waist and slammed me into a brick wall. I recovered quickly and we circled each other, testing each other. I tried to remember everything he’d taught me and everything I knew about him. I’d trained with him for years. I made a mental check list of all his strengths—he was tall, he had reach on me. If I ran at him, he’d knock me out before I got within a few feet of him. He was strong and lean. If I wrestled him, he’d be able to pin me and break my neck easily. The only weakness he had was… was… well, nothing. Lucas was hands down the most well-rounded fighter I’d ever met. Couple that with his new found strength, speed, and stamina… I was out matched—a hundred to one.

“Realize something, did you, darling? You’re no match for me and you never will be. Why they sent you, I have no idea.”

A light growl escaped my lips and Lucas smiled at me. I dove at him, catching him by surprise. We tumbled to the floor, locked in a full-blown wrestle. He grabbed my neck and squeezed, but I thrust my elbow into his ribs and shoved him off me. I sprang to my feet and kicked him in the face. As my boot connected, I heard a gruesome crack and then blood splattered the concrete. My chest rose and fell rapidly, leaving me slightly breathless. “You have until sunrise to leave Earth or I will come back and kill you.”

I walked away from him, not knowing if he’d attack me from behind—he didn’t. I didn’t look back until I was in my car. He was gone. A sad feeling swirled around my stomach and tears threatened. Suddenly, I felt claustrophobic in my suit.

“Don’t be an idiot.” I breathed deeply, banging my forehead on the hard steering wheel. “That wasn’t Lucas.”

My SUV roared to life and I drove off. I was going back to our headquarters. I still had to fill out a report of tonight’s events. I sighed and suddenly became aware of all the bumps, scrapes, and bruises that I’d sustained. The fight was a lot more brutal than I thought, but my physical pain was the least of my worries. I just went head to head with my friend, my mentor, and the love of my life—my heart hurt a lot more than any physical injury I’d sustained. I hadn’t seen Lucas in years, not since our last passionate night together, and then he was taken. The motorway rolled silently under me. Don’t cry. You’re not going to cry. I bit my lip and blinked a million times, but I couldn’t shake the tears and I cried. I cried because he was lost to me. I begged for this assignment. I thought that if I saw him again. I’d be able to put what we shared behind me.

There was no way it was going to be that easy.

Free from bonds, but not each other

It’s time to choose sides… On the surface, Sorry-in-the-Vale is a sleepy English town. But Kami Glass knows the truth. Sorry-in-the-Vale is full of magic. In the old days, the Lynburn family ruled with fear, terrifying the people into submission in order to kill for blood and power. Now the Lynburns are back, and Rob Lynburn is gathering sorcerers so that the town can return to the old ways.

But Rob and his followers aren’t the only sorcerers in town. A decision must be made: pay the blood sacrifice, or fight. For Kami, this means more than just choosing between good and evil. With her link to Jared Lynburn severed, she’s now free to love anyone she chooses. But who should that be?

Lacey here.

I have an intense love/hate relationship with Sarah Rees Brennan. On one hand, she’s created one of my absolute favorite series of all time. On the other… DO YOU KNOW HOW AGONIZING EACH BOOK IN THE AFOREMENTIONED SERIES IS TO READ??? Reading Unspoken and Untold was basically torture, but of the very best kind (is there even a good kind of torture?). I’ve become so sucked into the series’s world and characters that I can’t. stop. reading. But my heart can’t take any more angst! *goes off into the corner and cries*

So. Untold. Welp, all I can say is that I wholeheartedly LOVED it, despite the emotional pain/angst going on. I don’t know how these characters–moreover, Sarah Rees Brennan–do it. They made me fall even more in love with them than I already was after Unspoken. And god, the FEELS. I went from smiling like a lunatic one second to being completely horrified the next, and then I went from being pissed off to laughing my ass off. I just can’t handle all these feels, and yet I want MORE!

Kami is the most fantastic heroine EVER. I love her. Totally adore her. Mostly because she makes me laugh all the time, but also because she’s pretty unique. Yes, she’s the type of girl to go headlong into trouble to save everyone she loves, but the way she talks and acts is just so endearing (and funny). But oh my gosh, in the beginning of the book, I just felt so bad for her. Because Jared completely broke her heart at the end of Unspoken. And that is just… unacceptable. THESE TWO HAVE TO BE TOGETHER. They’re perfect for one another. But, Kami doesn’t exactly become all mopey because of Jared…

“Been chatting much with Jared?”
“We often have special moments where I come into a room and he immediately leaves,” Kami said. “I treasure those times.”

The entire book is basically this hilarious. GOD I love this series.

And Jared. This boy… I have so much love and anger for him. I love him, I really do, but I was just so frustrated with why he had to close Kami off. Jared doesn’t think highly of himself, at all. He thinks he doesn’t deserve love, when in fact, he does. He may not be loving and kind, but he’s loyal and fierce and passionate, and just… *swoon*. I just love this boy so much. And OH MY, the things he says and does later on in the book… *fans self*

The Lynburn Legacy series has THE BEST secondary characters ever. I seriously adore Angela and Rusty. These two siblings are the funniest characters I’ve ever read. And oh my gosh, I can’t even describe the magnitude of how much I love Rusty. He makes me laugh every timeand I totally wish he was real so I could have him all to myself.

One of the funniest parts of the book is with Kami’s father (who I love too!):

“Let me tell you about customs, James,” said Lillian. “I am not accustomed to being summoned to someone else’s home. You’re very fortunate that I came.”
“I am indeed blessed,” Dad told her. “I am also, by the way, called Jon.”
Lillian looked faintly surprised. “Are you?”
“Really?” Dad asked. “Really? I was the only Asian guy who went to our school. I kind of stood out. While you are an identical twin, and I still managed to know your name.”

But life’s not all laughter and sunshine in Sorry-in-the-Vale. Things do take a darker and more dangerous turn for these lovable characters. They have to fight against the evil sorcerers, and people do end up getting hurt. At times, it’s as if there’s no hope at all for the good guys, but they never give up.

I love this series so freaking much. It has the best characters I’ve ever read. Kami and Jared and Rusty and even Kami’s dad have wormed their way into my heart. I don’t think I can ever get enough of them.

5 hearts! And I want the next book NOW. *grabby hands*

Shirley here.

I don’t know where to begin. I mean. I tried mentally preparing myself before reading this book since, as we all know, Sarah Rees Brennan is a monster and enjoys hearing, seeing, and tasting our pain (as disturbing as that sounds, it’s true okay).

But even with all the mental preparation, I WAS NOT AT ALL PREPARED. NOT EVEN 1%. OHMYJESUS HOW DO I EVEN BEGIN TO EXPLAIN. Also, this review will have 200% more CAPS that any other review you will ever see by me on this blog. Which is saying a lot.

Sarah Rees writes in a way that draws the reader into the story and makes you feel as if you were a citizen in Sorry-in-the-Vale whilst all this commotion was happening. Uh, therefore you also feel like you’re third-wheeling in all of the Jami scenes (HINT HINT). BUT you also feel badass because you’re right next to them as they’re being badass so.

This book actually didn’t make me change my feelings on any of the characters! I just loved them all more and more. Except for Holly and Ash. Holly just bugs me and Ash just like. I can’t. Holly’s childlike reactions and actions annoyed me to no end. Sure I understand that she was afraid but come on giirl, step it up! And Ash. I understand why people love him, but like Holly, he just seems so needy and dependent on others. BUT I lovED JARED 10000000000000X more. Lacey is a witness in seeing my love for Jared, I literally went insane. I don’t even know how to clearly express my overwhelming love towards him. He’s a little frustrating, with pushing Kami back, and not self-confident in the slightest (except during the scene with Rusty where he gets a liiiitttllee bit cocky). But throughout the books he always downgrades himself =(

I’ve always had a neutral feeling with Kami, but I felt more sympathetic towards her in the book. (But I also got annoyed too, but let’s be real, when is there a book where you don’t get annoyed with the main character). It was pretty annoying when she would always assume things about Jared, but then again, I guess it was because as the reader, I knew more of what was going on than she did. (AYE DRAMATIC IRONY).

Of course RUSTY was just amazing and so was KAMI’S DAD. I feel like Rusty is going to be the type of father Kami’s dad is. SO CHILL AND FUN FAVORITE CHARACTERS. Truthfully as I’m writing this review I feel like everyone’s a favorite character hahaha. Do I even have to mention Angela? She was still off being bad-ass; the usual.

Before I leave I would like to gift you guys a special Jami scene that is close to my heart. *sobs* This scene made me cry violently and also increased my love of Jared. so.

“I don’t think you’re weak,” Jared said. “I want to guard you because you are important to me. Because you are – God, this is going to sound so stupid, I can never think of a way to say it – you are precious. I can never think of how to describe the value you have to me, because all the words for value suggest that you belong to me, and you don’t.”

Cue the screaming fangirls fangirl (i.e. me).

If you haven’t gone into the dark realm that is the Lynburn Legacy series, I suggest you PROCEED EAGERLY BUT WITH CAUTION.

6 HEARTS AND I WANT THE NEXT BOOK TO COME OUT BUT I ALSO DON’T BECAUSE IT’S THE LAST ONE NOOOO.

In the real world, when you vanish into thin air for a week, people tend to notice.

After his unexpected journey into the lands of the fey, Ethan Chase just wants to get back to normal. Well, as “normal” as you can be when you see faeries every day of your life. Suddenly the former loner with the bad reputation has someone to try for-his girlfriend, Kenzie. Never mind that he’s forbidden to see her again.

But when your name is Ethan Chase and your sister is one of the most powerful faeries in the Nevernever, “normal” simply isn’t to be. For Ethan’s nephew, Keirran, is missing, and may be on the verge of doing something unthinkable in the name of saving his own love. Something that will fracture the human and faery worlds forever, and give rise to the dangerous fey known as the Forgotten. As Ethan’s and Keirran’s fates entwine and Keirran slips further into darkness, Ethan’s next choice may decide the fate of them all.

Um, wow. I… did not see that ending coming at all. Like, holy crapola, that has got to be the biggest freaking cliffhanger of ALL TIME. God, Julie Kagawa, what are you doing to me?!?

Ahem, well, aside from that ridiculous cliffhanger, I am SO happy with The Iron Traitor. This spinoff series has really stepped up its game. The first book I was only slightly disappointed with, but it was still good, because hello, it’s Julie Kagawa! And besides, it’s hard to measure up to the epic badass-ness that is the original Iron Fey series (If you haven’t read it, GO READ IT). But The Iron Traitor ended up being better than I expected! Ethan was alright in the first book, but in this sequel, he’s certainly wormed his way into my heart. He’s become so endearing, with his snarky wit, his need to be the heroic savior, and just his basic teenage boy-ness that I want more of him! I’m now very much invested in this spinoff series and am dying for more books in the series!

Ethan has grown throughout the series. At first, he completely hates the Fey, because they’ve done nothing but cause trouble to him. But now, after becoming more involved in their world, and meeting other Fey, he can’t exactly hate all Fey. Because like it or not, he’s related to them. His older sister is the queen of the Iron Court, and he has a nephew (who is the same age as Ethan–freaky, right) who he’s become friends with. Keirran is a huge part of Ethan’s transformation. Both their fates are entwined, and not necessarily for the better. It was all very worrisome, to be honest, and I kept feeling like something terrible was going to happen. And oh my god, it did. It was like, BAM, it comes out of nowhere, and I’m just reeling, shocked. If you’re going to read The Iron Traitor (which you should!) be ready for some serious plot twists.

Keirran is a difficult character to like. Throughout the entire book, he’s searching for a way to save the faery girl he loves from Fading–or basically, dying. And while he’s searching, he embraces the darkness more and more. It was really hard to see him as Meghan and Ash’s son, you know? It was just… weird. Like, oh my gosh, MEGHAN and ASH have a SON, and he’s turning slightly BAD?!? He’s got a good heart underneath, but desperate times call for desperate measures… and I got very frustrated with him. Because he’s the main reason why Ethan and Kenzie and everyone are getting into so much trouble and are risking their lives over it. And I just didn’t like that. I wanted to give Keirran a big shake so he’d come back to his senses, but I guess that wouldn’t make for a good plot, would it.

Oh my gosh. The BEST BEST BEST part of the book was… wait for it… PUCK!!!! YES! PUCK. IS. BACK! You have NO IDEA how much I love this Summer faery. I adore him. Him and his antics and his comic relief. I’d missed this trickster so much. And Ash too. I’m not sure I should say this because I’ll sound crazy, but basically, every time Ash appeared in the book, I would start fangirling like crazy. Seriously, I love him. I’d just be squealing with joy for every ten second appearance he’d make. I’d just missed him so much! *sighs* Ash is the. best. I missed these two enough that I basically reread the entire Iron Fey series while I was reading The Iron Traitor. I’m such a crazy huge fan of the series.

And of course, a certain cait sith is there to help all their sorry asses traipse through the Nevernever so they can fight epic battles against the Fey 😉

ARGH! That ending! I want to know what happens in the next book so bad! Julie Kagawa, I hate love you so much for making me so agonized over the end!

The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

The Kate Daniels series is one of my favorite series of all time! The first book, though I didn’t love it as much as the rest of the series, still blew me away with the incredible world that Ilona Andrews created. And Kate totally hooked me in, with both her narration and character. Kate is a major badass. She’s like, queen of badass heroines. Sigh, I just love her so much. The second book was even better than the first, and that was when I started l o v i n g the series. And the third book, just, wow. Absolutely incredible, and still my favorite of the entire series (well, Magic Rises was a close second). The fourth and fifth books were amazing as well! I know I will always be wowed by a Kate Daniels book, and Magic Rises totally didn’t disappoint at all!

Magic Rises is full of everything you can expect in a Kate Daniels book—Kate being her badass, snarky, hilarious self. Crazy intense and exciting action. The best secondary characters (I love Derek so freaking much) that are just as fleshed out as the main characters. And CURRAN. Curran. Curran. Curran. Curran. Curran. This lion shapeshifter is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE book boyfriends. Like, ever. He’s the alpha of alphas (literally, he is), incredibly fierce, strong, loyal, hot, and most of all, he loves Kate with all his heart. He would drop everything he had worked for, all to save her. But of course, Kate would do the same in reverse. Their romance is one of my favorites. They’re strong and top dogs independently, but together, they can do and best anything. They bring out the best (and sometimes worst, which is usually hilarious to read) out of each other.

Curran. *SWOONS* *FAINTS*

Anyways, back to the err… fighting scenes. Yes! Fighting scenes. God, I get so crazy excited during all the action scenes in the Kate Daniels books. Because they’re just so well done! My head is completely into the fight, my heart’s beating, and I’m worrying about who can defeat whom. It’s so intense! And there are so many fight scenes in Magic Rises. LOVED them! I always enjoy action in books I read, and Magic Rises definitely gave me the rush and adrenaline I get when I read them.

There’s a special character who appears in the story, but I can’t say who, because it’s a spoiler! But I really liked him. Like, really really did. Even though he’s evil. There was just something so intriguing and dark and sexy about him… and his fight scenes with Kate! So. hot. Not that he could ever compare with Curran, but he’s still mighty fine on his own. If only he weren’t evil. Drat. Still, I’m excited to see more of him, and we definitely will be seeing more of him in future books.

The Kate Daniels series has romance in it, but it’s not a romance. It’s urban fantasy at its finest. So there aren’t really mushy, lovey-dovey scenes, and even if there were, they would make me feel kind of weird since lovey-dovey stuff is so not Kate and Curran. They usually make me laugh more often than they make me swoon, but I don’t love them any less for it! They’re perfect exactly the way they are. I never had a problem with Kate and Curran not really saying how much they love each other, since their actions speak louder than words, and I still don’t. But I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy reading an occasional mushy scene. And I swooned so. freaking. hard. I was all smiling, being all giddy and giggling, and I loved that even though Kate and Curran have been together for several books, their love is still going strong.

So go forth and read this series if you haven’t started! It’s a must-read series, and for those who are fans of Kate Daniels, you won’t be disappointed with Magic Rises!

Mini Series Review: Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh

psy-changeling series by nalini singh

psy-changeling revamped

So this is a first for me, reviewing an entire series instead of just one book at a time. But I figured since the Psy-Changeling series is a series (12 books and counting!), it would be easier for me to just gush about the series as a whole and make short reviews for each book. And this adult, paranormal romance series is the. best. I honestly had no idea I would fall this much in love with it, but I did, and I’m now such a huge fan of Nalini Singh. The only thing I don’t like about the series are the awful covers. I really, really don’t like them. Heart of Obsidian is the only cover I love (well, maybe Kiss of Snow too *cough* beautiful abs *cough*), but I’m so glad they revamped the book covers later. But whatever, who cares about the covers? It’s what’s on the inside that counts, and oh my god, this series is just one of my absolute favorites that I will never get tired of. I trust whatever Nalini Singh throws at us in future Psy-Changeling books.

Here’s a little bit about the Psy-Changeling series:

It is the year 2079, and there are 3 kinds of beings that exist in the Psy-Changeling world: humans, Psy, and Changelings. Humans are, obviously, just normal human beings. The Psy are like humans, except they have powers like telepathy, telekinesis, foresight, and a whole wide range of other powers, and they are under a regime called Silence. Changelings are the shifters, people who can shift into animals like wolves, leopards, hawks, rats, etc.

Silence is a huge part of the series. All Psy are under Silence (implemented in 1979), which means they have cut off all feelings, so they don’t feel any emotions, not love, happiness, sadness, lust, anger, fear, etc. The Council are the leaders of the Psy who are in charge of making sure Silence is maintained. However, Silence is breaking. Slowly, the Psy have been feeling more and more, and the Psy-Changeling series tells the ongoing story of the Psy learning to love again, and all humans, changeling, and Psy working together.

The series focuses on two changeling packs: the DarkRiver leopards and the SnowDancer wolves.

The first book of the Psy-Changeling series completely hooked me in. I wouldn’t have had the motivation to continue and finish the rest of the 12 books if I hadn’t loved Slave to Sensation. But I did end up loving it so much, and Lucas and Sascha’s story is one of my favorites of the series. It’s currently my third favorite book in this series. Lucas is the alpha of his DarkRiver leopard pack, centered in San Fransisco, and when he meets Sascha, sparks fly, even though it seems she has no feelings because she’s Psy. So Lucas slowly worms his way into Sascha’s heart and shows her how to feel and eventually, love. I love Lucas so much, his fierceness, strength, and capacity to love; he’s the main reason why I loved Slave to Sensation so much, though Sascha can hold her own too. I highly, highly recommend reading Slave to Sensation! Who knows, you might end up reading the entire series and loving it like I did!
