In this sequel to Wallbanger, fan favorites Caroline Reynolds and Simon Parker negotiate the rollercoaster of their new relationship while house-sitting in Sausalito.

Playing house was never so much fun—or so confusing. With her boss on an extended honeymoon, Caroline’s working crazy-long hours to keep the interior design company running—especially since she’s also the lead designer for the renovation of a gorgeous old hotel. And with Simon, her hotshot photographer boyfriend, gallivanting all over the world for his job, the couple is heavy-duty into “absence makes the heart grow fonder” mode. No complaints about the great reunion sex, though!

Then a trip back east to his childhood home has Simon questioning his nomadic lifestyle. He decides to be home more. A lot more. And he wants Caroline home more, too. Though their friends’ romantic lives provide plenty of welcome distraction, eventually Caroline and Simon have to sort out their relationship. Sure, more togetherness is a good thing—but does less traveling and working have to mean the other extreme? Apple pie and picket fences? With this second book in the Cocktail series, USA TODAY bestselling author Alice Clayton delivers another delicious, frothy confection of a book, shaking up her characters, stirring in laugh-out-loud humor, and serving sizzling romance straight up!

In case you didn’t know, I’m in love with Caroline and Simon. Like, seriously IN LOVE. I fell so hard for their story in Wallbanger, and I was desperate for more about them. And thank goodness Alice Clayton wrote Rusty Nailed!! I pretty much devoured Rusty Nailed in one sitting. I seriously don’t think I could ever get tired of reading about Simon or Caroline.

Rusty Nailed is a continuation of Simon and Caroline’s story from Wallbanger, so RN definitely should NOT be read as a standalone. Simon and Caroline have been together for a year, and life is… well, pretty great for them.

After a year, he could still bring me to my knees in seconds with one touch, one kiss, one look.

They still have sexy times, they still have those hilarious, sweet moments. Simon is off traveling the world most of the time because of his work as a photographer, but Caroline’s okay with that as she’s working hard at her job as an interior designer. The two of them have reached the point in their relationship where there’s not much angst or drama. I loved seeing how even though Simon is away many times throughout the year, the second he comes home, it’s like he and Caroline have never been apart. Simon is seriously the sweetest, and the two of them still have such a great chemistry with each other.

When you were in a long-distance relationship, of course you made the most of the time you were together. But sometimes, it was the unexpected that really made the difference. The unexpected emotions you were hit with when you saw that face, looked into those eyes, felt those lips. The unexpected reminder of why you fell in love with this person could hit you so powerfully. And this was that time.

We have Caroline and Simon’s friends’ stories entwined in the book too, which I was so happy about! Mimi and Ryan are engaged, Sophia and Neil have broken up (whaaat?), and Caroline’s boss Jillian is getting married. I love Caroline and Simon, don’t get me wrong, but their friends are so freaking hilarious!!! Caroline and Simon are funny enough, but add in the antics of their friends, and you have the laugh-out-loud humor that is an Alice Clayton classic.

So things are cruising along nicely for Caroline and Simon… until Caroline’s boss heads off on her honeymoon, leaving Caroline in charge of an entire business. Caroline has to work long-ass hours to keep the business running, but on the bright side, her boss left her in charge of a beautiful home to “house-sit” with Simon. Yeah, “house-sit”, as in have crazy monkey sex all over the place. 😉

Another aspect I loved about the book was how much more serious both Simon and Caroline were about their relationship. Simon is a very light-hearted guy–he’s sweet, funny, charming, and it’s enough to make us forget that he was orphaned at eighteen when his parents died. But in Rusty Nailed, we finally get to see the more vulnerable side to Simon–he finally opens up more about his past and his parents. Which only served to make me fall even more head-over-heels in love with this man.

But with Caroline getting more and more stressed over her temporary new job, and Simon getting contemplative about his and Caroline’s relationship, life’s not all sunshine and rainbows anymore. Caroline barely has any time to spend with Simon, and Simon is home a lot more now that he’s not taking many jobs.

Being half of a “we” is sometimes hard.

The two of them have to deal with what it means to be in a steady relationship, and it was so great to see Simon and Caroline discover that together. The two of them could not be more perfect for each other, so I was rooting for them all the way. They have their bumps along the road (i.e. some arguments, but nothing that a little lovin’ can’t solve 😉 ) but when the going gets tough, these two don’t get going. They stay with each other, hash it out with each other, and do what real couples do–they talk (and have sex. Of course).

“I adore you, and I want a home. Again. With you.”~Simon

I have to say though, I didn’t love Rusty Nailed as much as Wallbanger. Did I expect to? Maybe… but just because I didn’t love this book as much as I did Wallbanger doesn’t mean I love Caroline and Simon any less. Pink Nightie Girl and Wallbanger for the win! The book did move too slow in some parts, where some communication could have easily solved everything, and Caroline was being too stubborn for too long. But still, how could I not love a book about Simon and Caroline? I really enjoyed reading more of their lives past Wallbanger–I was laughing and swooning the whole time reading. I can’t ever get enough of these two!

review

Hot damn. What did I just read???

I went into Night Owl not really knowing anything about the book, other than a heck of a lot of people liked it, so I had pretty high expectations. And while I didn’t LOVE the book, I honestly enjoyed every minute of it. It was original, unbelievably sexy, and all around a page-turner that had me hooked from start to finish.

Little bird, he called me. His little bird. And somehow, it made me feel like the most precious thing in the world.

Night Owl is told through both Hannah and Matt’s POVs, alternately telling their story of passion, romance, and secrets. Hannah is just a normal 27-year-old woman trying to get her life together, and meets Matt as a writing partner. They have an anonymous relationship–Matt doesn’t know who Hannah is, and Hannah certainly doesn’t know that Matt is M. Pierce, one of her favorite bestselling authors.

From the moment I started reading, I was just waiting for when Matt and Hannah would meet, and I wasn’t disappointed with their meeting, or their developing relationship after. Matt and Hannah already have a semi-relationship from their online communications, and from talking to each other on the phone, but once they meet in real life, their chemistry is explosive and there’s no way they can deny having each other.

This book is some serious erotica (like, Holy Jesus, Matt’s frickin’ MOUTH!!!!!), but it’s also so intense! The characters are so well fleshed out, and the story was gripping. Matt and Hannah’s relationship is mainly a sexual one, and Matt tries to keep Hannah from knowing anything about his alter ego, who is famous, rich, and has a girlfriend. So yeah… Matt is actually kind of a jerk. He’s an alpha-male through and through–he’s sexy and brooding, but very anti-social. He’s arrogant and smirks way too much, but he’s got a vulnerable, sweet side as well. I loved seeing Matt fall in love, because he really doesn’t know what to do about it, or about Hannah. And he doesn’t know how he’ll ever be able to keep her if his secrets come out.

She gazed over her shoulder with half-lidded eyes and whispered my name. Why did I think I had any power over Hannah? I was hers.

Ahh, this book was so much fun to read. Night Owl is so scandalous!! I don’t know how many times I was shocked and blushing because of Matt and his dirty, dirty mouth. So for those who love a romance with a fabulous story and some hot, kinky sex? Night Owl is definitely for you.

The only problem I had with this book was how faaast Matt and Hannah were going in their relationship. They jumped from an anonymous online relationship to phone sex??? Granted, it was some hot phone sex, but I was scratching my head a little at this. I get that sex is a huge part of Hannah and Matt’s relationship, but I would have loved seeing more slow, sweet moments between these two.

I just have to throw this out there: Laurence, Matt’s rabbit, is the CUTEST. THING. EVER. Makes me want to own a bunny like, right now.

I really, really liked this book. It’s nothing like I’ve ever read, and I’d definitely recommend it. I’m kind of between rating a 3.5 or a 4… but I’ll just bump this up to 4 hearts for Matt’s filthy mouth Laurence. 😉

excerpt

Panic set in as I listened to the ring.

I’m about to talk to Matt.

I’m about to hear his voice.

I don’t even know this guy.

What the hell am I doing?

He could be a psycho stalker.

We shouldn’t cross this line.

I can hang up.

I can hang up now.

Yeah, I’m going to h—

“Hannah?”

I swallowed and slid down the bathroom wall.

“Hannah, is that you?”

Matt’s cool, clear voice swirled in my ear. It was distantly accented—New Jersey, maybe New York—and a little husky.

He sounded sleepy.

He sounded sexy as hell.

I had the overwhelming urge to ask him to keep saying my name. Hannah, Hannah, Hannah. Help me come. Warmth bloomed between my legs.

“Okay then.” He laughed softly. I felt my reason melting at the sound. “We’ll play the one-sided conversation game. I’m Matt, it’s nice to—” Again, he broke into quiet laughter. His voice was rich with amusement, but not warm. He sounded contemptuous. He sounded ready to laugh at anything, simply for the pleasure of laughing with his silky voice.

I couldn’t help but picture the devilish eyes that must have accompanied that voice.

Green eyes, I decided. Dark green, secretive and deep like a forest.

“I was going to say it’s nice to meet you,” he went on, “but I guess we’ve technically met online. Now we’re meeting on the phone. Maybe…” He trailed off. I heard some shuffling. “God, if this is you trolling me Nate, I swear I’m going to break your fucking—”

“Hey! Sorry, I—” I scooted over to the bathroom door, opened and closed it, then sat back against the wall. Brilliant. Sorry, I was soaking my underwear while I listened creepily to your voice. “—sorry, yeah. I had to go in the bathroom. My sister is asleep.”

Matt was silent for a moment.

“Is that why you’re whispering?” he said.

“Yeah. She’s really tired. We’re at a motel, we just stopped. Pretty sure the wall between this bathroom and her bed is a piece of plywood, so.”

“Well… damn. I wanted to hear your voice. I mean, your regular volume voice.” He chuckled. “Do you think you could risk a few words? I’ll deal with your sister if she wakes up.”

I smirked, imagining a conversation between my hotheaded sis and this glib personality.

“I think that would be a bad idea. But, um. Sure. What  should I say?”

“With your normal voice? How about, the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”

“Okay.” I cleared my throat. I was suddenly painfully self-conscious about my voice. “Um. Okay. The… the quick brown fox—”

Laughter exploded on the line. It was loud and sharp, nearly cruel.

“Oh… my god Hannah.” I heard a clatter, then some scuffling. “Oh fuck. You were really saying it. The quick… brown fox… oh god.” Matt dissolved into laughter again.

I glared at my knees.

“What’s so fucking funny?” I whispered.

“Hannah. Hannah, I’m sorry.”

I heard him take a few calming breaths.

“Okay,” he said. “I’m sorry. Ignore me, seriously. I have a weird sense of humor. That… that struck me funny. You have a lovely voice. Go figure.”

Go figure? What did he mean by that?

“Look, is there a reason you wanted me to call, or were you just looking for some late night entertainment?”

“Pretty sure this classifies as early morning entertainment, Hannah.”

“Okay. Well whatever. Look, I’m not sure why I—”

“I can’t stop thinking about you.”

His words stopped me cold.

His words, and something in his voice. Honesty.

“What we did,” he continued. “Or what you did to me…”

My throat went dry. What I did to him. It should have grossed me out, the thought of a stranger beating off to a few details about my body, but it didn’t. It intrigued me. The heat between my legs pulsed.

“You know what I’m talking about,” he insisted. An edge came into his voice at the slightest provocation.

“Y-yeah,” I managed. “Yeah.”

“You enjoyed it.”

“Yeah.”

“You said you wished I were pounding into you.”

“Yeah…”

I couldn’t believe this smooth-talking stranger was dictating to me how I felt.

I couldn’t believe I was blindly agreeing.

And I couldn’t believe my considerable vocabulary had suddenly been reduced to “yeah.”

“Hannah, you made me come so hard. And I did it again, thinking about you. Let me return the favor.”

His words hung in the silence between us.

Return the favor. Help me come.

“Yes,” I whispered.

Love is ugly and secrets will destroy you.

KAT

I don’t beg.

I don’t cry.

And I don’t give second chances.

Ream, the lead guitarist of the rock band Tear Asunder, deserves a gold medal for best dick move ever when he ran the moment he discovered my secret after two days of hot sex. Then he brings some chick to my coming home party from the hospital—after being shot.

I hate him.

Until …

Ream’s six foot two frame unfolds out of the car after being gone on tour for eight months. I stared. And in my defense, any girl would stare. It would almost be rude not to because Ream was the type of guy who stood out. Not because he was loud and obnoxious. No, it was because he was the complete opposite. Subtle and dangerously quiet. If he spoke, you’d better hope he liked you because otherwise you’d be falling at his feet begging for mercy. Except me … I don’t beg—ever.

But when our eyes locked, it was Ream’s steady confidence that had my nerves shooting off like jet sprinklers.

Then…

Ream told me he didn’t need a second chance because he was still working on his first.

REAM

Sex is ugly. It’s using someone for your own narcissistic pleasure. I did it and I hated it—until her. She was unfuckinexpected. Then I had to wreck our beginning with my screwed up past.

I don’t deserve her, but I’m selfish and I’m taking her anyway. This is who I am and it’s too late to change me.

review

Oh myyy!!! Overwhelmed by You is one hell of an intense book! Although I already expected that after reading the previous books in the Tear Asunder series, and I wasn’t disappointed! This next book of the series is packed with passion, angst, and action. There was never a dull moment for me while reading it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it all!

Kat and Ream were friends once, until they hooked up one time and it all fell apart. Kat was already wary of starting something more than friendship with Ream, and after the fallout, she never wanted to trust Ream again. Two years later, Ream is back in her life, and this time, he wants her back. Woot! I just love second chance romances, and especially heroes who go after what they want–and in this case, it’s the girl. There’s a fierce intensity to Ream, and he focuses it ALL on Kat and getting her back–her heart, her trust, her body, everything.

“I’m not letting you go. I can’t do it anymore.”
This time I used my palms against his abdomen and pushed. He loosened his hold, but just enough so I could meet his eyes. “Ream, it won’t work. It’s too late.”
His eyes flashed with something that I didn’t recognize. “This wasn’t a discussion.”

Can you say alpha male??? Ream is seriously one of the top alpha males I’ve ever read–when he wants something, there’s literally nothing that can stand in his way from getting it. He’s protective, possessive, sensual, raw, and sexy, but he’s also hiding something painful from his past from Kat. He may be reassured, dominating, and collected on the outside, but within there are some serious demons that need exorcising.

Kat is able to go head to head with Ream (although sometimes it’s Ream’s way or the highway, which frustrated Kat–and me–a bit, but ehh, he’s an alpha male, so what can you do?) and she fights her attraction with him. Ream broke her trust, and she’s not about to go handing it back to him so easily. I really liked Kat’s character. She’s funny, stubborn, and all-around a tough girl with a vulnerable side that made connect with her. She was a bit too stubborn at times–most of the book is her fighting against her being with Ream, and all I wanted to do was shake her and say “You two are meant for each other! Stop fighting it!” But Ream, being the determined and unrelenting man that he is, is not deterred from his goal.

I spent eight months wishing I wasn’t on tour so I could be with you. Now, I’m back and the only way I’m running again is toward you.” He lowered his voice, and the gravelly, deep tone drummed into my chest. “Fight me all you want, Kat. I’m going to keep coming.”

Ream had the determined alpha male thing down to perfection.

But there’s so much more than just winning Kat’s heart back for Ream to do. His past is coming back to haunt him, and he needs to find a way to deal with it so it doesn’t drive him and Kat apart. Add some suspense and action into this book, and you have the perfect blend of romance and thrills! I’d definitely recommend this for fans of the series–you won’t be disappointed with Kat and Ream’s story!

review

“Roses are so cliché. I prefer Ivy.”

What a wild ride this book was! I honestly had no idea what to expect going in to Mended. All I knew was that this was River’s hot older brother’s book, and it was a second chance romance. I’m a huge fan of second chance romances, and Mended turned out to be a passionate, intense one, with so many twists and turns I nearly couldn’t keep up. Fans of the series definitely won’t be disappointed with Xander and Ivy’s story.

When Xander Wilde was first introduced, we didn’t know much about him, but with Mended we finally get to see everything behind his facade. Xander and Ivy were high school sweethearts–I loved reading about the their past. Kim Karr did a wonderful job of blending both past and present. And teenaged Xander is seriously the sweetest thing! He and Ivy had their futures planned, and there was no question that the two of them would be together. Unfortunately, with Xander’s father’s suicide, Xander had to give up his future, and therefore Ivy–leading to a painful breakup and much heartache because of a lie.

Twelve years later, Xander is the band manager for The Wilde Ones and hasn’t seen Ivy since their breakup. Ivy is a famous pop singer and currently engaged to her agent Damon Wolf. But the second they see each other again, it’s as if no time passed at all. Xander wants Ivy again, fiercely, but he can’t do anything about it because she’s engaged. I loved being inside Xander’s head once they see each other again–Xander is so raw and passionate, and insanely jealous of Damon. He wants to tell Ivy the truth about the night they broke up, but would it even make a difference twelve years later?

My thoughts are drifting to seeing Ivy after so many years and how things could have been so different. When you believe a lie for so long… does it become the truth?

Mended takes you on a wild(e) ride from start to finish (hehe, see what I did there?). We have both Ivy and Xander’s POVs, and I could feel how deeply the two of them were heartbroken over each other, and still are.

“I’m sorry Xander… I just can’t be that close to you.”
I look down at her. “Why not? I’ve gone along with the friends thing, but clearly we both want more.”
Her voice cracks as she whispers, “Because, Xander, my body might want you but my heart doesn’t.”
The pain in her voice collapses everything I am, everything I have to give.

Ivy’s trying to protect her heart of Xander, but Xander won’t give up on her. He’s changed so much since he was eighteen–he has a stable job, his family healed, he’s strong and very much an alpha-male. So of course Ivy has a hard time resisting him.

“Look, we could play the game–pretend we both didn’t feel what we felt the minute we saw each other at the pool, but I’d rather not. I loved you when I was fourteen. I loved you when I was eighteen and I had to let you go. I’ve loved you for the last twelve years. And I love you now. Ivy–I love you.”

Xander is seriously the best! One second he’d be sweet talking Ivy, and the next, the dirtiest things would be coming out of his mouth! I loved it! 😉

But it’s definitely not an easy road for Xander and Ivy. Heartache, angst, and turmoil are constant throughout the book–Mended made me feel a wild jumble of emotions. I wasn’t too big of a fan once everything started getting twisty, and everything seemed to be resolved to perfectly for me, but overall I had a great time reading Mended. It kept me hooked and at the edge of my seat. Mended wasn’t perfect, but it’s definitely worth reading. I’m still not sure who I could choose between Xander over River though… 😉

about the author

Kim KarrI live in Florida with my husband and four kids. I’ve always had a love for reading books and writing. Being an English major in college, I wanted to teach at the college level but that was not to be. I went on to receive an MBA and became a project manager until quitting to raise my family. I currently work part-time with my husband and full-time embracing one of my biggest passions—writing.I wear a lot of hats! Writer, book-lover, wife, soccer-mom, taxi driver, and the all around go-to person of the family. However, I always find time to read. One of my favorite family outings use to be taking my kids to the bookstore or the library. Today, my oldest child is in college and my twins are juniors so they no longer go with me on these outings. And although I don’t need to go to the actual store anymore because I have the greatest device ever invented—a Kindle, I still do. There’s nothing like a paperback. So now my four year old and I make dates out of going to the bookstore–it’s time I love and cherish.

I like to believe in soulmates, kindred spirits, true friends, and Happily-Ever-Afters. I love to drink champagne, listen to music, and hopes to always stay young at heart.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack follows up her trio of hits—Losing It, Faking It, and Finding It—with this thrilling first novel in an explosive series bursting with the Texas flavor, edge, and steamy romance of Friday Night Lights.

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That’s what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.

But life doesn’t always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.

Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It’s obliterated.

Dallas doesn’t know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn’t know that Dallas is his new coach’s daughter.

And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

review

All Lined Up is too much cuteness! It’s such a sweet, quick, fun read, and I zipped through it in one sitting. I was already a fan of Cora Carmack’s after reading the Losing It series, and All Lined Up impressed me even more! Cora Carmack is spot-on as a new adult writer–I loved the way she portrayed her characters and I fell in love with her writing.

It was so easy to immerse myself into the world of All Lined Up, and into Rusk University. Football is, of course, one of the main aspects of the story, and even though i know next to nothing about football, the author was able to explain just how much football means to people without making me feel disconnected. Dallas is the daughter of one of the new coaches at Rusk University, and she’s a bit of a goody two-shoes. Her main passion has always been dancing, but she lets her father control her life and center it around football. Dallas is incredibly likable and relatable–she’s a girl who’s been stuck under her parent’s thumb for too long and doesn’t know the way out.

And I find myself thinking that church is like my kid’s sermon… It parallels my life as a whole. I show up, but I’m not in it. I go through the motions, but my mind wanders elsewhere. I dress and behave in the ways I know won’t get me in trouble. I get by. I bide my time waiting for the moment when it all ends.
But life isn’t church. It isn’t one hour during one day in the week. It’s everything, and I’m wasting it.

Carson is a transfer student trying to succeed through football, because it’s pretty much the only thing he can do. He needs to get a good spot on the football team and get a scholarship–otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to afford college. Carson is incredibly dedicated and determined, both of which are qualities that made me fall for him. He’s a good guy through and through, and even though he tries to make football his number one priority, the moment Dallas walks into his life, he can’t get her out of his mind–and he doesn’t want to.

The two of them don’t realize their relationship with one another–that Dallas is Carson’s coach’s daughter–so when they meet, sparks fly, and they allow a small moment of freedom to express their wants and desires for one another. They have this undeniable connection with one another that they’ve never experienced before, and it’s so sweet to see the two of them together.

But once the ball drops and they find out who they are, they try to become friends, but they can never get rid of their attraction to one another. Carson and Dallas spend more and more time together, and it’s easy to see how they fall for each other. I loved their relationship and how it grew slowly. They both knew there were risks to being together, so they were mature and cautious about it. But at then end of the day, they can’t deny the chemistry between them, and I wanted them to get together so badly! Carson and Dallas complement each other so well and make the perfect couple.

I loved the fact that even as their relationship developed, Dallas and Carson developed as characters as well. Individually, they have much more to learn and to grow to be the person they are most comfortable with.

All in all, All Lined Up shouldn’t be missed. It’s the perfect new adult novel with great writing, characters who have great emotional depth, and a story that keeps you hooked.
