review

“Roses are so cliché. I prefer Ivy.”

What a wild ride this book was! I honestly had no idea what to expect going in to Mended. All I knew was that this was River’s hot older brother’s book, and it was a second chance romance. I’m a huge fan of second chance romances, and Mended turned out to be a passionate, intense one, with so many twists and turns I nearly couldn’t keep up. Fans of the series definitely won’t be disappointed with Xander and Ivy’s story.

When Xander Wilde was first introduced, we didn’t know much about him, but with Mended we finally get to see everything behind his facade. Xander and Ivy were high school sweethearts–I loved reading about the their past. Kim Karr did a wonderful job of blending both past and present. And teenaged Xander is seriously the sweetest thing! He and Ivy had their futures planned, and there was no question that the two of them would be together. Unfortunately, with Xander’s father’s suicide, Xander had to give up his future, and therefore Ivy–leading to a painful breakup and much heartache because of a lie.

Twelve years later, Xander is the band manager for The Wilde Ones and hasn’t seen Ivy since their breakup. Ivy is a famous pop singer and currently engaged to her agent Damon Wolf. But the second they see each other again, it’s as if no time passed at all. Xander wants Ivy again, fiercely, but he can’t do anything about it because she’s engaged. I loved being inside Xander’s head once they see each other again–Xander is so raw and passionate, and insanely jealous of Damon. He wants to tell Ivy the truth about the night they broke up, but would it even make a difference twelve years later?

My thoughts are drifting to seeing Ivy after so many years and how things could have been so different. When you believe a lie for so long… does it become the truth?

Mended takes you on a wild(e) ride from start to finish (hehe, see what I did there?). We have both Ivy and Xander’s POVs, and I could feel how deeply the two of them were heartbroken over each other, and still are.

“I’m sorry Xander… I just can’t be that close to you.”
I look down at her. “Why not? I’ve gone along with the friends thing, but clearly we both want more.”
Her voice cracks as she whispers, “Because, Xander, my body might want you but my heart doesn’t.”
The pain in her voice collapses everything I am, everything I have to give.

Ivy’s trying to protect her heart of Xander, but Xander won’t give up on her. He’s changed so much since he was eighteen–he has a stable job, his family healed, he’s strong and very much an alpha-male. So of course Ivy has a hard time resisting him.

“Look, we could play the game–pretend we both didn’t feel what we felt the minute we saw each other at the pool, but I’d rather not. I loved you when I was fourteen. I loved you when I was eighteen and I had to let you go. I’ve loved you for the last twelve years. And I love you now. Ivy–I love you.”

Xander is seriously the best! One second he’d be sweet talking Ivy, and the next, the dirtiest things would be coming out of his mouth! I loved it! 😉

But it’s definitely not an easy road for Xander and Ivy. Heartache, angst, and turmoil are constant throughout the book–Mended made me feel a wild jumble of emotions. I wasn’t too big of a fan once everything started getting twisty, and everything seemed to be resolved to perfectly for me, but overall I had a great time reading Mended. It kept me hooked and at the edge of my seat. Mended wasn’t perfect, but it’s definitely worth reading. I’m still not sure who I could choose between Xander over River though… 😉

about the author

Kim KarrI live in Florida with my husband and four kids. I’ve always had a love for reading books and writing. Being an English major in college, I wanted to teach at the college level but that was not to be. I went on to receive an MBA and became a project manager until quitting to raise my family. I currently work part-time with my husband and full-time embracing one of my biggest passions—writing.I wear a lot of hats! Writer, book-lover, wife, soccer-mom, taxi driver, and the all around go-to person of the family. However, I always find time to read. One of my favorite family outings use to be taking my kids to the bookstore or the library. Today, my oldest child is in college and my twins are juniors so they no longer go with me on these outings. And although I don’t need to go to the actual store anymore because I have the greatest device ever invented—a Kindle, I still do. There’s nothing like a paperback. So now my four year old and I make dates out of going to the bookstore–it’s time I love and cherish.

I like to believe in soulmates, kindred spirits, true friends, and Happily-Ever-Afters. I love to drink champagne, listen to music, and hopes to always stay young at heart.

One-night stands are supposed to be with someone convenient, or wickedly persuasive, or regrettable. They aren’t supposed to be with someone like him.

But after a crazy Vegas weekend celebrating her college graduation—and terrified of the future path she knows is a cop-out—Mia Holland makes the wildest decision of her life: follow Ansel Guillaume—her sweet, filthy fling—to France for the summer and just…play.

Oh my gooooosh!!! I’m so freaking IN LOVE with this book!! Christina Lauren have outdone themselves! I can’t even begin to describe all of my feelings, my love for this book! When I got my arc, I literally jumped for joy and squealed. And I devoured Sweet Filthy Boy in pretty much one sitting. Sigh. I wish this book never ended. I could read about Mia and Ansel and France forever.

Christina Lauren fans, I’m delighted to say that you absolutely will not be disappointed with Sweet Filthy Boy! When I finished SFB (with a HUGE smile on my face), I was thinking, “Oh my God, I think I love this book as much as I love the Beautiful Bastard series.” I fell in loooove with the characters (oh, Ansel), the writing (France!!), and everything else about this book. To be quite honest, Sweet Filthy Boy was perfection.

So we have our lovely heroine Mia, who, along with two best friends, goes to Vegas after graduating college. And at Vegas, Mia meets Ansel, who is sexy, alluring, and French (let me just say I fell in love with French boys because of Ansel. I WANT MY OWN FRENCH BOY PLEASE). Buuut, after a night of hard partying and drinking together, Mia wakes up and can’t remember the night before. Enter the shocking little plot twist that I didn’t see coming at all! If you read the book, Mia’s situation may seem a bit similar to a certain other rocker book I shall not mention, but SFB as a whole is nothing like it. SFB was unique, refreshing, and so much fun to read. It’s become one of my favorite books of the year!

What we know is dimly lit bars, playful banter, the clean, crisp sheets of hotel rooms. What we know is the unrequited possibility, the temptation of the idea. The make-believe. The adventure.
But when you choose the adventure, it becomes real life.

Ansel and Mia have an undeniable attraction to one another. Ansel wants Mia to give them a chance at forming a relationship, but Mia isn’t sure that the two of them can actually work. They had a one night stand at Vegas, ended up in a crazy situation, and now Ansel wants Mia to go back to France with him? Umm… I’d have been a little skeptical too (although now that I’ve read the book and fallen in love with Ansel, I would’ve DONE ABSOLUTELY WHATEVER ANSEL WANTED ME TO DO). Still, when Mia looks at the prospect of her future after graduation, she’s not happy about any of it. So… she decides to take a chance, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and go to France with Ansel.

So Mia will spend the summer in France with Ansel, and they deal with their relationship day by day. They have a bumpy start at the beginning of their relationship though. Ansel has to work a lot, and doesn’t have much time to spare to spend with Mia, and Mia is in a foreign country left to fend for herself. There’s a definite strain in their relationship, especially since they started off rocky anyway, but the two of them are determined to make their relationship work. And it helps that Ansel is just so freaking sweet to Mia…

“I just want to make love to you all day,” he says against my mouth and rolls on top of me. “I don’t want to think about work or friends or even eating. I want to exist on you alone.”

Ansel is just… perfectly imperfect. He’s got so many sides to his personality, and it was incredibly easy to fall in love with him. He’s sweet, charming, funny, sexy, and he whispers sweet nothings–in French! He’s an impulsive kind of guy (which is good and bad), he’s definitely a lover and not a fighter, and I was swooning so much for Ansel throughout the book. You just can’t not smile because of him.

“I love that you’re trying to learn my city. And God help the poor boys who see you walk by in that little sundress I saw hanging in the bathroom. You’ll have admirers following you home and I’ll be forced to chase them off.”

Do you SEE how freaking cute and sweet Ansel is??

And as the two of them spend their summer in France together, they slowly… fall for each other. It’s slow and sweet and heartwarming and inevitable. They never really thought that they’d fall for each other, but they do, and this creates complications, because what happens after the summer is over? Mia has to go back to America, and Ansel has to stay in France. My heart was aching for the two of them, because I wanted them to work so bad. Mia and Ansel are perfect together, and have become one of my all-time favorite couples.

“I’m lost in you.”
I gasp, nodding frantically. “Me, too.”…
“What you feel, Cerise? I feel it, too. Fuck, Mia, I feel everything for you.”

Mia and Ansel’s beautiful romance was an absolute joy to read. I was swept away by their whirlwind romance, by the depth of the characters, and by the writing. There’s the perfect amount of sexy to balance out the sweet, and I loved how much Sweet Filthy Boy wrung so many emotions out of me. I’d be smiling and giggling one moment, and hurting for Mia and Ansel the next.

I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK. I can’t say enough good things about it–everyone needs to experience Ansel and Mia and France. You will fall in looooove like I did.

Early Review: Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins

Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins

Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins
Series: The Sweet Trilogy #3 (full reading order below)
Publication Date: April 29th 2014
Links: Ebook • Paperback • Audible • Goodreads
Source: I received an ARC from the publisher (HarperTeen) in exchange for an honest review

It’s time.

Evil is running rampant and sweet Anna Whitt is its target. Nobody knows when or how the Dukes will strike, but Anna and her Nephilim allies will do anything necessary to rid the earth of the demons and their oppressive ways.

The stakes are higher than ever, and Anna is determined that the love she feels will be her strength, not a liability. But trying to protect the ones she loves while running for her life and battling demonic forces proves to be perilous—especially as faces are changing and trust is fleeting. When the Duke of Lust sends Anna’s great love, Kaidan Rowe, to work against her, Anna must decide how much she’s prepared to risk.

In the most sensual and fast-paced installment yet, Sweet Reckoning brings all the beloved Neph together one last time to fight for their freedom.

I have to admit, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this series at the beginning, but now… I’m so in love. Each book in the trilogy got progressively better and better, and I grew to care for these characters so much that I’m sad that it’s all over. I had high expectations for Sweet Reckoning, since it’s the last book of the series, and Wendy Higgins absolutely delivers. Sweet Reckoning is a heart-pounding, fast-paced, and fabulous conclusion to this trilogy.

Anna and the gang have one last final chance to rid the world of demons, and the action doesn’t disappoint. There’s never a dull moment in this book, though there are many instances of sweetness between Anna and Kaidan, which I adored. Sweet Reckoning is thrilling, romantic, and fast-paced, and I was able to read it in one sitting. Wendy Higgins’s writing is easy to follow and I was riveted from beginning to end. I loved the subtle humor that appeared every now and then in the book (Kaidan, in particular, is hilarious!). And I was so impressed with all the characters–with their growth development and their relationships.

Anna is an impressive heroine–she truly becomes someone stronger, more confident, and more at ease with her destiny. It did become a bit too preachy for my taste at times, but I was glad that Anna had so much faith–faith in herself, in God, and in her friends. She already lost one of her Nephilim friends, and she’s definitely not ready to lose another one, so she does everything in her power to do what it takes to save all the Neph.

Kaidan is so, so sweet! I truly loved him best in Sweet Reckoning. He and Anna have to protect their relationship from the Dukes, but when it’s safe to be alone, the two of them are so adorable. Kai is so protective and willing to show how much he loves Anna (swoon!). They make such a great couple–their romance is sweet yet very, very sexy–and I loved the direction Wendy Higgins chose for them. It was something I never would have thought of, but for Kaidan and Anna, it was perfect.

All of their friends have a strong role in the book as well, and it was so great to see how much everyone has changed throughout the series. New relationships arise, some become more steady, but overall, it was the perfect ending for them.

Sweet Reckoning was so much fun to read, but I have to admit that I’m sad the series is over. Still, it’s a brilliant conclusion to this series I’ve come to love, and it’s got an even better epilogue! The epilogue was so beautiful and heartwarming that I fell in love with Kai and Anna all over again. It was such a perfect way to end the series.

review

Dazed was such a sweet and heartfelt novella that fans of the series definitely don’t want to miss. It only took a short while for me to finish Dazed, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I adored Aerie and Jagger’s story! I fell for them from the very first page.

We were first introduced to Jagger, River’s cousin, in the lovely epilogue from Torn. He’s a successful model who moves to LA, and here he meets Aerie, Dahlia’s best friend. I loved their first meeting–they have such great chemistry, and they have a fierce attraction towards one another. Jagger is wonderful–I loved reading about him! He’s gorgeous, charming, down-to-earth, and so adorable with all the little facts he randomly says.

As Dahlia’s best friend, Aerie was someone we always saw as strong and fierce who was always there to support her friend. But in Dazed, we get to see a different side of Aerie. She’s actually a vulnerable girl, due to the scars from her past, but I loved her all the more after learning about her past. She’s hesitant to start anything with Jagger, despite their attraction for each other, but Jagger, with all his charms, is hard to resist. I loved seeing the walls around her heart slowly break down as she spends more time with Jagger. The two of them are so perfect for each other!

I really enjoyed the writing in Dazed. Kim Karr managed to make me feel so much for Aerie and Jagger, and my heart was so invested in their story. The characters emotions come off so clearly from the pages–the passion, the troubled pasts, even some angst.

And guess what? If you’ve been missing some River and Dahlia–look no further! River and Dahlia are featured a lot in Dazed. I was so happy to see more of them in this novella, and I loved Jagger and River’s relationship! The two of them are hilarious and witty together.

Dazed is a compelling novella that fans of Kim Karr need to read! And even if you haven’t read the Connections series, I’d recommend this novella. It’s short and sweet and passionate, and overall a beautiful love story. 4 hearts!

Bully and victim.
Tormenter and tormented.
Villain and hero.

Ellie McCallum was the bully. The Tormenter. The Villain. Taking what she wanted, stomping over anyone that got in her way. Feelings, futures, and relationships be damned. She felt no emotional connection to anyone or anything. A sad and lonely existence for a young woman who had come to expect nothing more for herself. Her only happiness coming from making others miserable.

Particularly Freaky Flynn.

Growing up, Flynn Hendrick was known only as “Freaky Flynn.” He lived a life completely disconnected even as he struggled to become something more than that boy with Asperger’s. He was taunted and teased, bearing the brunt of systematic and calculated cruelty, ultimately culminating in a catastrophic turn of events that brought Ellie and Flynn’s worlds crashing down.

But then Flynn and Ellie grew up.

And moved on.

Until years later when their paths unexpectedly cross again and the bully and the freak are face to face once more.

When labels come to define you, finding yourself feels impossible. Particularly for two people disconnected from the world who inexplicably find a connection in each other.

And out of the wreckage of their tragic beginnings, an unlikely love story unfolds.

But a painful past doesn’t always want to let go. And old wounds are never truly healed…and sometimes the farther you try to run from yourself the closer you come to who you really are.

review

Wow! This is my first time reading a book by A. Meredith Walters, and I am so, so impressed. I loved the writing, and although the hero and heroine were difficult to connect with, I loved their story, and I loved the depth of their characters. Reclaiming the Sand is a beautiful, heart-wrenching story about a girl who’s full of hate and anger finds love and forgiveness with the boy she leasts expects.

I am an ugly person.
I do ugly things.
I think ugly thoughts.
You will hate me.

But you will love him.
It’s hard not to.
He is everything that I’m not.
He is good. He is kind. He cares for others deeply and absolutely.

You will hate me.
You will love him.
I love him.
He has changed my world.

Ellie is, plain and simple, a shitty person. She’s a bully, she’s belligerent, and she’s been to jail. She was dealt a crappy hand in life, and she continues to make bad choices, but I never hated her. I got frustrated and angry with Ellie, but I never hated her for who she was. I was sympathetic–Ellie never once tried to make something of herself. She was resigned to having the same, crappy life, with the same, crappy job, and the same, crappy friends. But all that changes when she starts seeing Flynn Hendrick around town again, a boy she never thought she’d have to see again.

You see… Ellie bullied Flynn back in high school. She and her group of “friends” (who were all just really terrible kids) would make fun of “Freaky” Flynn, mess with him, hurt him, and make him cry. He was different than most kids, because he has Asperger’s syndrome. It’s a delicate subject that the author handled superbly–Flynn’s sad experience in high school is heartbreakingly real. And it’s even more heartbreaking to see that when Ellie wasn’t with her friends, she was kind with Flynn. When they were alone, Ellie cared about Flynn, but in public, she never did anything to defend him.

The book is told in both Ellie and Flynn’s POVs, but where Ellie tells the story of the present, Flynn tells the story of their past. And past and present collide when Ellie and Flynn see each other after six years, after Ellie was sent to jail. I became so sucked into Ellie and Flynn’s story, nevermind that I wasn’t a huge fan of Ellie’s. She’s real and harsh, with no regards for anyone, except for Flynn. Flynn is always her exception, and as they end up spending more time together, he breaks down the ice around her heart.

“I like being with you. I missed you,” Flynn said, surprising me. Of all the things for him to say, I had not expected that. It was such an innocent thing but it held so much weight.
He missed me.
After everything I had done to him.
He missed me.

It’s beautiful seeing two people who could not be more mismatched for each other fall in love. But it’s incredibly difficult for Ellie to fall in love with a man who has Asperger’s. It’s frustrating and heartbreaking for Ellie sometimes when things don’t go exactly how Flynn needs, but he’s the type of man who’s worth all the trouble. He’s pure, innocent, kind, and the quiet kind of supportive who Ellie knows will stand by her no matter what.

Flynn represents everything bad the Ellie ever did, and she has to come to terms with her past. And she does. Through her actions, she manages to change herself for the better. I loved reading Ellie’s progression, how she finds strength within herself to change and to deal with the past.

Reclaiming the Sand is a beautifully written story that should not be missed. It’s painstakingly real, but so worth the read.

excerpt

“Flynn!” Dania called out, waving her arm over her head, trying to get his attention.  I didn’t want to look, but I couldn’t help it.

Flynn glanced our way and caught sight of Dania flinging her hand about.

He ignored her and I had to chuckle at my friend’s agitation.

“He is so rude!” she complained.

Before I could stop her, Dania was up and out of the booth, heading toward Flynn.  I got to my feet and hurried behind her.  The last thing I wanted was for her to cause a scene.  She had a short fuse these days and Flynn and his perceived disrespect would definitely trigger it.

“Freaky!  It’s so good to see you again!  Isn’t it, Ells?” Dania said, winking at me and biting her bottom lip so she wouldn’t laugh.

I felt like I had jumped into a time machine and transported back seven years.  Dania hadn’t matured much in the years since graduation.  In fact, since her pregnancy, I felt as though she had backtracked to near infancy.

She was playing schoolyard mind games and I didn’t want anything to do with it.

“Come on Dania, Emily’s going to be bringing us our food soon,” I used my best no nonsense tone in hopes she would listen.

“I just wanted to talk to Freaky Flynn.  We used to be buddies right?” Dania slung her arm around Flynn’s waist and he stiffened instantly.

“Don’t touch me,” he demanded, moving out of her hold.

“Come on.  I just want a friendly hug.”  Dania reached for him again and he threw his arms out to stop her, knocking over a napkin dispenser, sending it crashing to the floor.

The diner became deathly quiet.  Everyone was watching their exchange with vivid interest.

“Dania, enough!” I said, gritting my teeth.  Flynn’s normally placid face looked almost panicked.  He hated being touched.  Everyone that had ever interacted with him knew that.  And Dania most definitely knew that.  What was she trying to do?  This seemed so juvenile and beneath someone who was five months pregnant.

“Come sit with us, Flynn.  Let’s talk for a while,” she said, her voice smooth as honey.

Flynn shook his head and took a step backwards.

“You don’t like me.  I don’t like you.  I won’t sit with you,” he said firmly and I was sort of proud of him.  He was standing up for himself in a way he never had as a teenager.

Life had clearly taught him some harsh lessons.  And I was sure that Dania and I had been his teachers.

Dania frowned, taken aback by his blunt candor.  She looked at me and I shrugged.  Then she laughed, a high trilling sound.

“Well you don’t need to be a dick about it,” she huffed.  But I knew she wasn’t finished.  Dania didn’t take rejection well.  And she took public embarrassment even worse.

“Hold on, you have a piece of lint,” she said and reached up to swipe her hands across his face in a long, exaggerated gesture.  Flynn flipped out.  He lunged backwards so quickly he tripped over his feet and crashed into a table behind him.

There was a collective gasp but tried to help him.  Dania cackled in delight, covering her mouth with her hands, her eyes bright with malicious glee.  Flynn sat up, looking shaken.  His eyes were wide and I could see his hands trembling.

“Stop laughing at me!” he yelled, which only made Dania laugh louder.  His face was flushed red and tears dripped down his cheeks.

For a moment I stood there frozen.  Once upon a time I would have egged Dania on. Adding to his abject humiliation.

Not this time.

“You heard him, Dania, shut the fuck up.”  Without waiting to hear any more of her hate I leaned down on my haunches in front of Flynn.  I didn’t reach out a hand to help him up.  I didn’t invade his personal space.  I kept a healthy distance between us but I did meet his eyes.

And he didn’t look away.
